Code of silence Neighbours claim they were left in the dark on Casey Council’s plans to compulsorily acquire a 78-year-old man’s home and wildlife-rich acreage to build soccer fields in Narre Warren North. At a meeting on 11 January, supporters gathered in the setting sun watching kangaroos graze on John Foy’s 34-acre block, many only recently finding out about the council’s plans for a soccer complex. Renee Haoust said she and other Maclaine Court neighbours directly north of the block were not consulted on Amendment C223. “We are all very livid.

“Everyone that I have spoken to about this issue say it is the first time they have known about it. “My particular boundary will be only metres away from a public toilet block and I would only assume lots of criminal behaviour and seedy public persons hanging around.” Ms Haoust said she didn’t receive a letter from the council to tell her about the acquisition, nor did she see a public notice advertisement in Berwick News and the Government Gazette in July. Ms Haoust said she would have objected to the plan, had she known of its full scope. She found out several weeks after Planning Panels Victoria heard and then reported its findings to Casey on December 16.

Some months back, Casey officers told her the proposal would only include a walking track next to Eumemmerring Creek, she said. Even neighbours who did receive notification letters from the council said there was no mention of what was planned for the site. Ms Haoust says she’s upset for Mr Foy potentially losing his paradise more than 30 years in the making. She also objects to her loss of privacy, peace and quiet as well as the intrusion of light towers. The council, which is required to publicly release the findings after 28 days, has argued the acquisition is necessary to create an unbroken link between Frog Hollow Reserve and Lysterfield Park.

It would also help alleviate a soccer pitch shortage in the municipality, the council states. Residents at the meeting noted the irony of Berwick City Soccer Club based in Fox Road, Narre Warren North lobbying Casey for extra fields and facilities for many years. Casey statutory planning manager Duncan Turner said the amendment was advertised, and owners and occupiers of the property and surrounding land were notified in writing. The information available included reference to the future expansion of district leisure and sporting facilities with the adjoining Narre Warren North Recreation Reserve, Mr Turner said.

Rates push on By Cam Lucadou-Wells CASEY councillors have provisionally endorsed a push towards raising rates above the two per cent rate cap this year. At a 20 December meeting, a majority of councillors endorsed a statement that the State Government-imposed cap would lead to a shortfall in council services and infrastructure. They supported council officers continuing to plan for a possible submission for a rates cap variation. Mayor Sam Aziz said no formal decision had been made on whether the council would apply for a variation. “However the government’s announcement that rate rises will be capped at two per cent leaves us few options if we are to maintain the current level of services and infrastructure. “We are facing a cumulative black-hole of around $200 million over the decade to 2025.” At the meeting, Crs Geoff Ablett, Steve Beardon, Rex Flannery and Tim Jackson dissented. “The previous council spent a significant amount of money on a submission for a rate rise exemption last year and it was knocked back,” Cr Jackson said. “I suspect it will be knocked back again.” Cr Jackson said he expected Casey’s soon-tobe-convened People’s Panel of 60 residents would also dismiss the need for a higher rates rise - even after being briefed by the council on its budget constraints. “I’ve been educated on the issue by the council too but I haven’t changed my mind. “You shouldn’t be holding the residents to ransom and say if you don’t support a rates rise, these are the things you’re not going to get.” Cr Jackson said revenue could be alternatively raised by asset sales or loans. “I think the difficulty for residents is the council has been spruiking that the $125 million Bunjil Place will not cost you anything. “At the same time, it says it needs to increase rates over the cap to afford to do things.” Meanwhile, Cr Beardon refuted the claim that

dissenting councillors were taking the “easy way out”. He said it would have been easier to go with the flow and vote with the majority of councillors. “I think people are already paying enough. “Until we are seeing a major improvement in what they’re getting (from Casey), I won’t be asking them to pay more.” The rates cap has lowered from the 2.5 per cent cap in 2016, in which Casey Council made a failed bid for an exemption from the Essential Services Commission. Local government peak bodies have also been critical of the cap which matches CPI but is lower than the 2.15 per cent cap recommended by the ESC. Municipal Association of Victoria interim president Coral Ross accused the State Government of “double standards” for raising property taxes by 5.2 per cent and employee expenses by 7.8 per cent. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said the rate cap had ended a decade average of six per cent rate rises and made things “fairer” for ratepayers.

Casey looks to people power By Victoria Stone-Meadows TARGETED residences from across the Casey municipality will receive letters from the mayor in the coming weeks inviting them to apply to be on a people’s panel. Casey Council is establishing the people’s panel to allow the community to directly inform the direction of infrastructure and community spending over the next four years. The panel will be made up of 60 residents from the City of Casey, selected by an independent consulting company, to give a representative cross-section of the community. The panel will meet four times in March and be presented with budgetary and cost balancing problems to solve that will inform council on what the community wants prioritised. While the recommendations and decisions put forward by the panel will be presented to councillors for consideration, the panel’s recommendations are not binding on council decisions. Mayfield ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon said the people’s panel would be a positive way for council to stay better connected to the community’s needs. “I think it’s a great thing and I think it’s important we consult with the community and have good strong voices to give us that feedback,” she said. “To some extent council is a people’s panel already, so this is an extension of that.” Cr Stapledon also said the panel would allow people to understand council processes better and dispel some of the misunderstandings about council. “The panel will allow people to feel more engaged and understand why things are done a certain way, and realise how they can help get things achieved.” However, while Cr Steve Beardon agreed that council was already a people’s panel, he saw this initiative as an unnecessary extra. “They have 11 people representing the people of Casey already called councillors,” he said.

“I think consultation is good idea when it is done broadly by elected councillors and I’m more than happy to doorknock 100 houses and by 50 we would have the answers this panel will give.” Cr Beardon believes the new people’s panel is an expense to the people of Casey that could be put to better use. “The number of parks and playgrounds in Cranbourne alone that could benefit from the kind of investment immediately is huge; as well as graffiti removal, home and community care services etc. “The questions aren’t going to be as I would put them; just asking residents what they are prepared to give up to remain in the rate cap is a skewed way to put it to people. “I would rather we just ask people what they need and if they can afford a rate rise or if we can work harder to achieve goals within the current budget; people want us to work harder and smarter.” Council have engaged the services of Capire Consulting Group for an undisclosed amount to help select the panel and ensure all facets of the community are represented. Council has confirmed the data used to benchmark this cross-section will be a combination of Census data from 2011 and their own council records. “Our city is one of Victoria’s fastest growing and council needs to ensure it is meeting community needs and expectations within the tough financial environment caused by State Government imposed rate capping,” Casey Mayor Cr Aziz said. “Council and the community will have to make some tough choices about the level of services and infrastructure it wants.” Members of the people’s panel will be reimbursed $320 per person, a total of $19,200, for their involvement at the conclusion of the project. Those interested in being a member of the people’s panel that don’t receive a letter from council can apply to be part of the project on council’s website www.caseyconversations. com.au/peoplespanel.

Brad’s broken the ice By Victoria Stone-Meadows NINETEEN-year-old Brad Smith from Narre Warren South had spiralled out of control after a two year chronic ice addiction. It wasn’t until he found help from Glenn Munso and the Youth You Program based in Hallam that he has managed to get his life back under control. “I had been smoking ice with my dad for two years straight,” Brad said. “I don’t think we went one day without it; it was like we were stuck in a spiral and this spiral only went down and down to rock bottom for both of us.” Brad said during his time in the grips of his addiction, he lost his sense of time, drove away his friends and family, turned to crime and lost his sense of who he was. “It went quickly; days ticked over, it was exhausting, I was overtired and lost,” he said. “I experienced terrible, dark, lonely times where I would steal things and sell my own property and others' property for cash to get ice.” “I did really stupid things on the street at all times of the day, I wouldn’t sleep, wouldn’t tell the truth about anything and always lied to my family, wouldn’t spend time with anyone but myself or someone with ice.” Brad found himself not speaking to his family, with no friends left, and only caring about where he was going to get his next hit from. “My addiction got to the extent of spending

over $1000 dollars a week on ice,” he said. “If I had no money I stole and lied and would also sell my belongings, build massive debt with my dealer or get a loan, really anything for it.” After struggling with his addiction for some time, Brad found paranoia, insomnia and psychosis was a regular part of his routine. “The paranoia got me really bad in a lot of ways,” he said. “I would see things and hear things and this kept me up and I would go insane and search the house, inside and outside because I would think people are staring at me or talking about me and even people are following me. After suffering a mental breakdown, crippling self-loathing, and realising his life had no future like this, Brad opened up to his step-mother about the addiction he had kept hidden for two years. Brad’s step-mother gave him a phone number to call and it has been six months since Glenn Munso answered the phone and changed Brad’s life. “We spoke for a while and I gave Glenn my long-story-short of where I was in life at the moment,” Brad said. “He told me that I could come and join the Youth You Program and the first week of the program made me change.” “I realised through the program that if I stayed committed and do what Glenn had set up for me, I have a chance to change and that chance is now.” Brad has excelled in the Youth You Program that uses a combination of time in the gym, com-

munity engagement and mentoring sessions to help young people get off drugs. Since joining the Youth You Program and kicking his habit, Brad said his life is completely different and keeping with the program has been the biggest achievement of his life. Glenn said through the Youth You Program Brad has changed completely and he has grown so much as a person. “When he used to come into the gym, he was very anxious and would come in with a hoody on and stay in the corner and was very unsure of himself,” he said. “He was going through detox then, but now he walks freely and has gained a lot of confidence and grown as a person; he is part of the community we have here.” “He even raised the group standard really high because once he did that and was getting really clean, everyone matched that and he became an inspiration to others.” Brad said he also wants to encourage other young people in his situation to seek help for their addictions. “It’s okay to put the pipe down, speak up and ask for help,” he said. “Nothing is impossible and there are many of us that want to help, we just need you to speak up. Glenn Munso will be releasing his first book titled “Drugs to not discriminate” that is based around his Youth You Program later this month. A HALLAM man has been refused bail after allegedly slashing a drinking buddy with a large knife in a drunken and bloody fight. James Thokluel, who hobbled on a sore leg in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court dock on 9 January, faced up to 20 years’ jail if found guilty of recklessly causing serious injury to the victim with an offensive weapon. His lawyer indicated he would contest the charge on the grounds of self-defence, given Thokluel had also received multiple machete wounds in the fight. The court was told Thokluel had fought with his wife when he returned to his home with mates after a drinking session on 9 December. One of Thokluel’s mates told police the wife was being beaten and he intervened in the lounge room conflict. He claimed he was then punched to both sides of the head by Thokluel, and he retaliated with punches. Thokluel then allegedly collected up to three large kitchen knives and deeply slashed the top of the victim’s hand, resulting in severe blood loss. At the end of the fight, both Thokluel and the victim were bloodied, hospitalised and required plastic surgery. Thokluel was treated for stab wounds to his shoulder. In July, Thokluel had been served with an interim intervention order allegedly due to verbally abusing his wife and intentionally self-harming with a knife during an argument. The defence submitted for Thokluel to be bailed to live at the Hallam home, vacated by his family who now live with the accused’s parents. Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted Thokluel had no prior criminal history, had worked as a volunteer for a foster-care charity and had strong family support. Thokluel was remanded in custody.

Cot that makes a difference By Cam Lucadou-Wells THE silence that greeted Ava Torcasio’s entrance into the world still haunts her mother Lucia three years on. All had gone apparently smoothly during Ms Torcasio’s 40-week pregnancy. “We had heard our baby’s heartbeat the very day before, and we felt her move that evening before we went to sleep,” Ms Torcasio said. “Arriving at the hospital, we soon learnt that her beautiful soul had somehow slipped away during the night.” Ava was still-born on 23 September 2013. “Her silence was the most haunting memory from that day, and it will stay with me forever,” her mother said. In memory of Ava’s third birthday, a $6000 cuddle cot was crowdfunded and donated to St John God of Hospital, Berwick by Ava’s family on

16 December. A cuddle cot is a cooling system designed for a small cot. It had allowed Ava’s family to spend a precious 24 hours with her after her birth. In that time, a family portrait was taken with Ava and moulds of her hands and feet were made. Her fingerprints were immortalised in jewellery. “If it weren’t for the cuddle cot, we would not have been able to spend those precious hours with our angel, and would not have had the opportunity to keep a little piece of her forever,” Ms Torcasio said. She says that without a cuddle cot, many deceased babies are taken to mortuaries within hours of birth. She hoped it would make a difference for some of the 2000 bereaved families of still-born families in Australia each year. “It’s important to us to get more people talking about still births as it’s such a taboo topic,” Ms Torcasio said. “And it shouldn’t be.”

CASEY Council’s Bunjil Place has been granted $100,000 in state funding to attract major arts groups such as The Australian Ballet. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the Creative Suburbs funds would help deliver one of the main aims of the under-construction arts and civic centre - to boost arts participation in the region. As part of the council’s submission, the arts groups will possibly engage with the community in a series of workshops and then perform the works at Bunjil Place. Possible collaborations included The Australian Ballet’s dance education ensemble working with 500 local students, or a drama project that will share the stories of Casey residents. Casey councillor and arts spokesman Wayne

Smith said the initiative showed the potential opportunities created by Bunjil Place. “Programs like this will connect local and professional organisations together with the community to create engaging and meaningful, arts, cultural and entertainment experiences that will be available to more of our residents.” As part of the Creative Suburbs program’s first round, Casey and eight other outer metropolitan councils shared more than $850,000. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the program filled a long-standing gap in state cultural funding. “Whether you live in the city, suburbs or regions, creativity brings enormous social, cultural and economic benefits - and everyone, everywhere, is entitled and encouraged to make the most of it.” Bunjil Place is expected to open in late 2017.

Forgiving Tree works a treat THE inaugural Casey Cardinia Library Corporation’s (CCLC) ‘Forgiving Tree’ initiative delivered a boon for local charities in the lead up to Christmas. In its first year ever, the initiative of the library to forgive book fines and other fees in exchange for a donation to the libraries’ ‘Forgiving Tree’ raised More than $15,000 for local charities. Each of the libraries under the CCLC banner had a chosen local charity they partnered with to pass on the community’s donations so those less fortunate could enjoy a bountiful Christmas. Cranbourne Library parented with the Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) who provide services and referrals to the Cranbourne community. Leanne Petrides from CISS said she was overwhelmed with the support from the library and the community and was amazed to still be receiving donations into January. The success of the program wasn’t the only surprise as the donations made to local charities through the Forgiving Tree were more than the fines and fees that were forgiven. For the month of December, Forgiving Trees were erected in Cranbourne, Doveton, Emerald, Endeavour Hills, Hampton Park, Narre Warren, and Pakenham libraries as well as the Cardinia Mobile Library Service. CEO Casey Cardinia Libraries Chris Buckingham said while the success of the initiative was a surprise, he knew the community would come together for such a program. “We knew that setting up the Forgiving Trees in our libraries was the right thing to do,” he said. “The heart-warming response from our wonderfully diverse community was inspiring.” The fervour with which the community embraced the program has delighted both library and charity staff and made a difference to many families in the Casey and Cardinia regions. “We are very grateful to all the people and partners who gave so much throughout December,” he said. “Together we have made a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of local families at this special time of year.”

EPA warns sites for sore eyes By Cam Lucadou-Wells Three soil and mulch businesses in O’Grady Road, Hallam have been put on notice by the state’s environmental watchdog over dust pollution plaguing nearby homes and factories. In a letter seen by Star News, the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) advised the businesses to shut down on windy days in response to complaints by neighbours to the north and south. The EPA also advised the businesses to hire a qualified consultant to implement dust management plans. “Be aware that EPA continues to monitor the area,” EPA southern metro region acting manager Marleen Mathias stated in the letter. She warned that formal Pollution Abatement Notices would be issued if the sites were likely to be the cause of further dust problems off-site. Ms Mathias told Star News that the businesses faced potential fines of up to $777,300 if prosecuted in court. EPA officers will report back with study findings into the dust by mid-February, she said. The EPA action comes several years after businesses in Bolt Court as well as residents in Hampton Park say they started complaining about the odours and dust. The residents in Rowland Close and Glenora Way report regular and severe hay-fever, skin hives, asthma attacks, coughing and sore eyes suffered by children, young and old residents alike. Nearby workers tell of the need to hose down vehicles daily and to keep factory doors constantly closed due to the dusty emissions. In July 2015, the EPA issued a Pollution Abatement Notice against one of the three notified businesses Supreme Organic Soils (SOS). It revoked the notice several months later after SOS complied with an odour management plan including buying a water tanker to suppress dust. SOS owner Frank Forino said of the latest EPA letter that “we’re doing our best in the situation”. He repeated his claim that the unsealed, Casey Council-owned O’Grady Road was also to blame. A Casey spokesman said the council currently

Dust swirls from the O'Grady Road area, 21 November 2016. conducted monthly inspections and grading, annual gravel resurfacing and at least a yearly dust suppressant treatment of the road. “As a result council is satisfied that factors other than the road are the major source of concerns.” It is believed adjoining businesses have refused

to contribute towards the estimated $10 million cost of sealing the road. Casey councillor Damien Rosario said the council had been in regular contact with the EPA to ensure they were aware of the local concerns. “We have urged them to continue to work with those businesses until the issues are resolved.“

Riders jump in to help on trail By Cam Lucadou-Wells Mountain bike riders have pitched in to fix the extensive trail network in Lysterfield Park. Jumps and water drainage have been improved, gravel laid down and erosion fixed as part of the works. The works were undertaken by Parks Victoria and Lysterfield District Trail Riders (LDTR). LDTR fund-raised and offered thousands of hours of volunteering towards the project. The area’s chief ranger Darren Mitchell said the riders had been regular contributors, such as through monthly working bees. “It’s not unusual for around 10 (or) 12 volunteers to turn up to help maintain and upgrade the park. “They’re a fantastic group.” LDTR president Ben Reeves said he was partly motivated by giving back to the community and partly “wanting a better ride next time I go out”. “We’re incredibly lucky to have a natural oasis so close to the city.” The park’s 20 kilometres of mountain bike trails includes the State Mountain Bike Course used in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, as well as tracks for various skill levels.

OFFICER PARK TO OPEN THE highly anticipated neighbourhood park at Timbertop Estate, Officer is set to open this month so residents can enjoy it in the warmer weather. Hicks Reserve, named after the former owners of the land, commenced construction earlier this year and is now near completion with the official ribbon cutting to take place on Friday 20 January at 10am. From the 1800s Timbertop’s land was farmed by the Hicks family, who were early pioneers in the Officer area. The land was used for dairy farming, apple orchards and beef cattle. In 2003 Parklea purchased the land from the Hicks family, with Timbertop Estate launching in 2012. Timbertop is now home to around 700 people, with over 250 homes occupied. Members of the Hicks family will be the guests of honour at the opening ceremony. 2 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 16 January, 2017

Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Owen will perform the official ribbon cutting. Other local MPs and Cardinia Shire councillors will also be in attendance. Hicks Reserve is two hectares in size and is located in the heart of Timbertop, on the corner of Timbertop Boulevard and Goldsborough Drive. It includes beautiful walking tracks with native planting, a lookout area, playground and giant slide for the kids, barbecue facilities and picnic area, and a large kickabout area. Local residents have eagerly awaited the opening of the park, which will be one of several planned for the estate. The park is just another reason people are making the move to Timbertop’s beautiful, familyfriendly community. Find out more at timbertopestate.com. au Connecting people and communities DJ

25 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 16 January, 2017

Looking Back

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

18 January 1917 Accidents On Saturday, an accident befell Mr Newman, a farmer residing at Hammond Road while engaged in carting hay on the farm. It appears that Newman was riding on the top of a load of hay when he fell to the ground and sustained serious injuries. Dr Taylor was sent for, and after examinations ordered the man’s removal to the Melbourne hospital. As Dandenong Railway Station was not reached until shortly after the 2.30 train had left for the city, it was decided to proceed by motor car to Oakleigh and continue the journey from there by rail. On Saturday evening, word was received from the hospital authorities, intimating that the patient was in a serious condition.

12 January 1967 Flying squad pounces on youth brawl A police flying squad from Springvale pounced on 50 or more youths and girls who were brawling outside a Lyndale dance hall, according to evidence in Dandenong Court this week. Police witnesses said that in a series of scrimmages with youths and girls, one policeman was felled and kicked about the body, and another had the back of his shirt torn out. Trevor John Williams (19) of Curtin Crescent, Dandenong, faces five charges having assaulted First Constable Max Read of Springvale and First Constable Anthony Shiels by kicking. First Constable Max Read told the court that with other police he responded to a call from a dance hall in Lyndale at 11pm on December

30, 1966. “As we approached the hall we found a large group of youths and girls fighting. “A young policeman was being assaulted and as we approached, the crowd dispersed into smaller groups at the back of the hall. “In Curtain Crescent I saw more than 30 youths and girls fighting. “I pulled the first two apart then moved into the group to break up the fighting. “I was knocked to the ground, kicked in the back from some of the youths. “As I scrambled to my feet, Williams tried to kick me in the face. “I put up my arm to protect my face, other youths were coming at me, Williams then kicked me in the groin.”

20 years ago 20 January 1997 MP’s visit anger Confirmation that Senator Pauline Hanson

will visit Dandenong was met last week with anger and dismay by the South Eastern Region Migrant Resource Centre. The centre’s director Mr Ross Barnett said: “We don’t need those who express racist views based on ignorance and fear coming here.”

5 years ago 16 January 2012 Tough times “Mary” (not her real name) can’t believe the high cost of state schooling in Victoria. She sought assistance from Dandenong Community Advisory Bureau to help with her family’s back-to-school cost of more than $2200 for fees, text books and uniforms. “We live on one full-time wage of $550 per week with some government assistance,” she said. “How do people manage?”

Explorers of creek and bridge The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. We explored the small Dandenong Creek from the old wooden bridge at McCrae Street out past the wooden Hammond Road bridge and along to where Mile Creek entered Dandenong Creek, just past what today is called Centre Kirkham Road. We were a bunch of kids living in Dandenong during the Great Depression. We explored all the creeks in the area including Mile Creek up to the junction of Yarraman Creek and the railway line. Yarraman Creek today has almost disappeared. But when we explored Mile Creek in the area that is now the Greaves Reserve showground and the areas of Yarraman Creek to Heatherton Road, Princes Highway and Oakwood Park, with the exception of a few farmhouses there were almost no

JACK LOOKS

BACK JACK JOHNSON houses in any of those areas. We explored the holes on Mile Creek where clay for the first handmade bricks of Dandenong came from. Those bricks were made for the chimneys of the timber Yarraman Park homestead, built for Mr Lyall in 1849, and possibly were also used for an underground well. These first handmade bricks were a very professional-looking brick for their time, with a double frog and the name W Lyall stamped into one frog, very much like the machine-pressed, tunnel kiln-fired bricks of today.

They were different from the first handmade bricks of the Dandenong Creek area of McCrae and Pultney Streets, which had flat surfaces top and bottom and no brand with the exception of the accidental animal or bird print made when the bricks were air-drying before baking. Some bricks had a thumb print which was a tally mark, as I think some workers were on piecework which meant they were paid per 100 for the bricks they made. That flat-surfaced brick was the same type as the many hundreds of thousands of bricks produced by Centennial Brick Works in Railway Parade between 1881 and 1911. The holes from which the clay for these bricks was excavated were on the banks of Mile Creek and on the part of Yarraman Park farm, which is now known as Greaves Reserve. The boundaries of Yarraman Park homestead were the Princes Highway, Heatherton Road, and I think Corrigan Road area, and down past Kirkham Road West, somewhere near where the

Mile Creek - which ran almost diagonally through the property - entered the Dandenong Creek. I am not sure where the other boundary was; only that Yarraman Park took in most of what today is the area of Noble Park. After high-density housing took place and an extra station was needed between Dandenong and Noble Park, Yarraman Station was built and it took its name from the property. It had been a working farm for 30 years before the Gippsland Railway went through the property to Dandenong in 1879. Today, the whole area we explored 75 years ago is covered by bitumen and buildings. The land now exists beneath and in the shadows of bridges and interchanges. Sadly one of the last remaining redgums that we played beneath as children, and which predated Dandenong’s settlement by centuries, had to give way to this mammoth construction.

SPORT Her Destanee is in the making By Nick Creely A star was born on 3 January, with 16-year-old Narre Warren and Noble Park Tennis Club ace Destanee Aiava becoming the first player born this century to win a WTA main-draw match. When the Journal talked to Destanee for the first time way back in 2012, the then 12-yearold spoke about the goal of becoming the “world number one”. And now Destanee, in 2017, is turning heads with her natural flair with the racket, and her powerful build and natural poise are not going unnoticed. It’s been a phenomenal rise for the talented star, who at the age of 12, represented Australia at Roland Garros in the Longines Future Tennis Aces Tournament. In this particular competition, Destanee, competing against fifteen of the top under-age female tennis players in the world, won the tournament in a landslide playing alongside Steffi Graf in an exhibition match. Perhaps then the world should have taken notice, but Destanee continued to work on her craft behind closed doors, and eventually entered the professional circuit in 2015. In the match on 3 January, in front of a crowd exceeding 2000 people, Destanee came up against American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and downed the Olympic doubles gold medallist and revered singles player in a three-set victory 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4. In fact, the game itself was met with some disruptions, with heavy rain the night before forcing play to be suspended. But when she resumed, it was almost as if a switch-flicked, and from there, Australia saw the talent that has been working behind closed doors

The young Destanee has come a long way since declaring in 2012 that she wanted to be the world's best. Picture: CONTRIBUTED to achieve her ultimate goal - being world number one. Not many people watching her strut her stuff with her imposing serve would have given her much of a chance against a woman double

her age. Currently ranked 290th in the world, the win was simply stunning, with many people not even knowing who the young star was. But now they do.

Larissa named top coach after brilliant season By Nick Creely Dandenong Rangers coach Larissa Anderson has been rewarded for her brilliant second season in charge, being named the WNBL’s Coach of the Month for December. In what has been a stellar season for the premiership favourites, Anderson has steered her group to greater heights, despite the constant struggle to keep her stars on the park. But the rise of several other players, such as Amelia Todhunter, has seen Anderson praised for her work with her squad. She has dealt with the loss of star imports Natalie Novosel and Ally Malott to a raft of different injuries at different times, but throughout a testing season for their overall depth, have been able to win their games home or away. The WNBL said that Anderson has been a revelation for the Rangers since transitioning from the SEABL competition, and that her best coaching is ahead of her. “In the face of debilitating injuries, Larissa was able to keep the Rangers in a top four position through December with a 4-2 record,” they said. “Making the move from SEABL following four championships, Anderson has proven herself as capable at the highest level with victories over Perth at home and SEQ on the road ... (complimenting) wins against the Capitals and Boomers.“ And despite Anderson receiving her third gong for this award, she stressed that it’s about the team and not the individual. “It is always lovely to get an accolade, but it is very much a team game, and I’m proud of how the girls are going - there is a lot of hard work to come obviously,” she said. After seven years out of the WNBL system and a highly successful coaching career in the SEABL, Anderson returned to the national competition for the 2015/16 season, and has been able to lift the Rangers and produce a plethora of stars. In her first season in charge, the Rangers finished third overall on the ladder, but fell down fighting to the South East Queensland Stars.

Immediately after the win, Destanee spoke about the game, and the quietly spoken individual from the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne talked about the challenges of the match, and her gratitude to be in this position, all with a beaming smile across her face. “I haven’t really looked at my phone since the end of the match, I’ve mainly just talked to my Mum, and she just said good job, and then took me to the practice court after,” she chuckled. “I struggled a bit at the end but I got through it - a lot of things were actually going through my head, I was pretty nervous playing in front of that many people - it was the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of. “I was a bit inconsistent through the match, but it feels pretty good to be known and supported by so many different people - I just want to go out there and enjoy the experience. “When I walk in its just crazy, there are people that I have seen on TV before just there and it’s crazy.” But Destanee’s dream run came to an end the following day, going down fighting 6-4, 6-3 to world number nine Svetlana Kuznetsova, bowing out in 70 minutes. But what’s next for the prodigious young talent? Well she has qualified as one of seven wildcard entries for next week’s Australian Open, after winning the 2016 18/U Australian Championship, and will now become the only player born in 2000 or later to participate in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. It has taken Destanee just four years since stating she wants to become the “world number one”, to playing on one of the world’s biggest stages, so in another four years, perhaps she will be able to finally achieve her ultimate goal - if not before.

TAC Cup fixture is revamped By Nick Creely The 2017 TAC Cup fixture has been released by AFL Victoria, with all of the 12 TAC Cup clubs playing 18 home-and-away games (up from 17 in 2016). The Rays will travel down to face the Gippsland Power at Morwell Recreation Reserve in Round 1 on 24 March, as they look to better their straight-set finals defeat from 2016. Chasemore sweeps the Eagles into semi-finals By Nick Creely DDCA TWENTY20 REVIEW - QUALIFYING FINALS Cranbourne champion and ex-Victorian Premier legend Matt Chasemore has reverse swept his way - literally - to a third Twenty20 century of the season at Casey Fields, as the Eagles booked themselves a semi-final in two weeks’ time. The ageless left-hander, who continues to churn out runs in all formats of the game, was at his brutal best, smashing the second highest score in the competition’s history, 136 not out off 68 balls, including five sixes. It was Cheeks’ third century in this format in the last three months, with two unbeaten centuries (128 not out and 117 not out) as the marquee player for Main Ridge in the Mornington Peninsula competition. His love affair with Casey Fields also continued, after he smashed a record 148 not out against North Dandenong earlier this season. But it wasn’t just his clean-striking that turned heads on Wednesday evening, with Chasemore playing the reverse sweep as his main weapon of choice, middling everything and constantly finding ways to utilise one of the hardest shots in the textbook. People at the ground remarked that he scored at least 80 of his runs in this method, and while highly unorthodox, was a mastery tactic by the wily veteran, while others could not recall a better innings in the Twenty20 format. And as for the opposition, Dingley, well they tried their hardest, keeping the Eagles to 3/178, before running out of overs on 5/142. Eagles’ trio Steven Spoljaric (1/20), Jakeb McVicar (3/29) and Cam Dinger (1/19) ensured they would fall over the line against a brave and resilient Dingo batting line-up. In other matches, a powerful performance from Buckley Ridges has seen them surprisingly thump Heinz-Southern Districts at Park Oval. Winning the toss and batting, in-form Buck opener Susantha Pradeep (83) continued his electric T20 tournament, as the home side posted a strong 7/174. The Cobras were well served by Lee Brown (3/28) and Kaushalya Weeraratne (2/34), while Michael Davies and Ryan Patterson snared a wicket each. But in the reply, the strong Cobras batsman faltered, being rolled for 110 despite a tough resistance by the consistent Michael Davies (44). No Bucks bowler really stood out amongst the pack, with Hussain Ali taking three wickets and Luke Fletcher and Wes Nicholas also chiming in with two. Berwick has impressively knocked off HallamKalora Park at home, after a crafty half-century to Darren de Souza (54 not out). The Bears elected to bat against the Hawks, posting 3/140 off their 20 overs, with de Souza carrying the bat and steering the ship, while the powerful Nathan Pilon (48 not out) and four six-

Stocktake: The numbers add up Balancing a busy schedule is proving no obstacle for trainer Gary Peach after his exciting middle-distance performer Stocktake won his first metropolitan race at Sandown Park on Thursday night. Peach, 62, started training greyhounds as a youngster and said it has been a balancing act combining his training with his job at Telstra. “I’ve been training dogs since I was about 20, my parents had greyhounds and inevitably the passion rubbed off on us children,” Peach said. “I’ve only ever had three or four in the kennel at one time due to been flat out with work. I’ve been at Telstra for 46 years and retirement isn’t too far away. When that time comes I plan to increase the size of my kennel.” Training greyhounds is a role that requires total commitment, evident in the early hours of Peach’s morning. “I got home last night at 1.45am and I was up a few hours later to look after the dogs and then when straight to work,“ he said. Stocktake’s win continued an impressive 12 months on the track, backing up earlier success stories at Ballarat, Horsham and Warrnambool. Stocktake began well from box two and settled at the head of the field before Cheese Ya Later briefly took control. Stocktake turned the tables and zipped past the leader before he held off Alpha Triton in the closing stages. The final margin was one and three quarter lengths in a slick time of 34.24. Peach was pleased with the win and had no concerns when Stocktake was challenged in the early stages. “After settling up front I had plenty of confidence he’d be in the finish - he’s won over 660m at Ballarat so strength wasn’t a concern. It was a big thrill to win,” Peach explained after Stocktake’s eighth win from 32 career starts. He’s spent most of his career racing in restricted grade however Peach has always had faith he would make it to a metropolitan level. “I knew he’d be competitive because he always runs home well,” he said. “He’s only had four starts over longer than 550m and won all three of them.” Stocktake is owned and bred by Peach who also owned and bred the mother, Inventory. “Nearly all of the pups she’s produced have won. She’s been great and now living on the couch at home,” he said. Robert Britton and Jason Thompson claimed training honours on the night with winning doubles.

Bears in trouble after failing their Bloods test By Nick Creely DDCA - TURF 1 REVIEW -ROUND 7 SPRINGVALE SOUTH def BERWICK In one of the most critical matches in the Turf 1 season, the Bloods have annihilated a shellshocked Berwick at Alex Nelson Reserve. Bears skipper Jarrod Goodes sent in Craig Slocombe and his Bloods, where the home side pushed on from the platform set by openers Nathan King (38) and Michael Vandort (34) to post a tricky 9/191 off 40 overs. Goodes (4/25) could do no more to lift his side and continues a brilliant season with the ball. But as soon as the wily veteran Slocombe took the ball after tea and decided to roll his arm over, the game effectively ended. In his eight-over spell, the DDCA legend notched up figures of 4/8, which included the wickets of Darren de Souza (7), Jarryd Wills (12), Josh Holden (1) and the dangerous Ryan Crawford (3). The Bears were left in tatters, bowled out for just 49 in a stunning batting collapse. HEINZ-SOUTHERN DISTRICTS def NORTH DANDENONG The Cobras’ charge towards finals continues to gather momentum, edging out a brave North Dandenong outfit at Lois Twohig. But it could have been a lot worse for the Maroons, recovering from 5/23, but a bit of class by Clayton McCartney (59) rescued them from embarrassment. With the Maroons setting the Cobras a tricky 165 for victory, the visitors simply found a way to get the job done, with Shehan Bandaranyake (43) playing a vital knock. DINGLEY def DANDENONG WEST An absolute stellar century by the in-form Matthew Hague (136) has seen Dingley crush Dandenong West and keep their slim finals hopes alive. The star opening batsman has enjoyed a brilliant season at the top, and carved up the Bulls with 22 boundaries and two maximums in a brutal run-a-ball display. The epic century lifted the Dingoes to an imperious 8/223 off 40 overs. And despite a fighting half-century to Sam Weir (51), the Bulls were never truly in the game, finishing on 9/118 off 40 overs. PARKFIELD def CRANBOURNE Well who would of thought that a side with no wins on the board could possibly topple the reigning champions at home, but it’s happened, and it could have dire consequences for Cranbourne. And it turned out to be one of the games of the season, with the Parkers taking until the very last ball to chase down 145. Earlier in the day, the Parkers restricted the champs to just 6/144, with Lucas Ligt (66 not out) carrying the bat. The Parkers then grinded away, and with David Ford (33) and Hemantha Alles (25), secured their first win of the season.

It was a tough day at the office for Cranbourne, with scoring hard to come by against Parkfield. 163771 Picture: GARY SISSONS It could have consequences for the Eagles, with three or four sides banging down the door to displace them in the four. MORDIALLOC def HALLAM-KALORA PARK Ladder-leaders Hallam-Kalora Park have gone down in a thrilling clash to Mordialloc, with the Bloodhounds consolidating their spot in the topfour. Winning the toss and batting, the Hawks could only manage 7/110 off 40 overs, with star all-rounder Ian Daniel (1/6 off 8 overs) playing a vital role. And after a shaky start to the innings which eventually saw the Bloodhounds at 8/88, Chathura Athukorala (35 not out) guided the home side to victory.

BUCKLEY RIDGES def NARRE WARREN In the words of Bill Lawry, dear oh dear! It has been a truly tough season for Narre Warren, and it continued once again, with Buckley Ridges dismantling them in brutal fashion. Sent in to bat, the Magpies were listless, bowled out for just 78 despite Janaka Liyanabadalge (22) once again top-scoring. Luke Fletcher, Lukas Hoogenboom and Daniel Watson were all strong with the ball, applying constant pressure to the Magpies batsman. And all it took was 22 overs for the Bucks to chase down the meagre total, and continue the season of misery for the Magpies.

Legends lift Rangers home By Nick Creely It was perhaps the perfect finale to a milestone day for the Dandenong Rangers, with a thrilling overtime victory over cross-town rivals Melbourne Boomers. Celebrating their 25-year anniversary as a club in front of a packed home crowd, including some of the Rangers’ most renowned players at Dandenong Stadium, the two teams thrilled, with the Rangers producing some magic late in the fourthquarter to level the scores despite a slow start. With club legend Penny Taylor watching on, the Rangers lifted when it truly mattered, with the crowd and presence of club legends spurring them on. Down 56-51 with under a minute left on the clock, the Rangers, trying to consolidate their position on the top of the ladder, found some inspiration through star import Natalie Novosel, as she shot a three-pointer that allowed the Rangers to draw level at the final buzzer. In the extra session, the Rangers were simply stunning, scoring 17-5 and eventually 22-5 to pinch a season-defining victory. Alongside Novosel’s late heroics, she scored 18 points and dished off three assists, Ally Malott starred on the boards, scoring 24 points and eight rebounds. More impressively, Malott shot 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from the three-point line. Sara Blicavs and Steph Cumming were once again prominent in the match, scoring double-digits. But it was a truly slow start for the home side, and at one stage the Boomers led 0-9, before some much needed defensive prose allowed the Rangers to utilize their strong attacking game. Rangers coach Larissa Anderson was pleased with the result, but was still frustrated with certain elements of her team’s game. “I’m super proud of the girls and how they held on there - they never give up,” she said. “Teams are starting to lift against us, and we have just been a little rattled, a little rusty after the break, so hopefully that shows the girls why they’re in this position and gives them a bit of confidence moving forward. “There were so many uncharacteristic mistakes again tonight, but they came through - credit to the girls they executed beautifully after the time-out. “Hopefully we can march forward and find that momentum once again. “As stressful as that was, what a phenomenal crowd on a huge occasion for the club, and it was so nice to have so many past players and sponsors here.” With top-spot consolidated, the Rangers travel to Adelaide next Saturday night to tackle the Lightning, as they look to gather some more momentum.

Purring Pattinson pounds the Cats into submission By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER - REVIEW - RD 14 (Day 1) There are few better sights in the country, if not the world, than James Pattinson steaming in and taking wickets. And on Saturday, Geelong found out just how good he is, with the Dandenong quick picking up 5/23 in one of his rare appearances at the bowling crease in the cream clothing. But more importantly, the Panthers have set themselves up to find a way out of their mini mid-season slump, after a solid day’s cricket at the Geelong Cricket Ground. Panthers skipper Tom Donnell sent the Cats in on an overcast day, and it worked a treat early, with Pattinson shredding apart the Cats top-order to leave them reeling at 4/34. In what has even troubled some of the great international batsman, Pattinson bowled with genuine pace and used the new ball to great effect.

But a defiant century by Cats skipper Eamonn Vines (100) and an aggressive half-century by Brenton McDonald (64), saw the home side reach 242 all-out off 74.5 overs. Other bowlers to impress were Adam McMaster (3/44), who continues to work into some good touch, while the reliable James Nanopoulos (2/43) was excellent throughout the day. And young Panther debutant Matt Wetering (0/37) showed some positive signs in his first XI debut for the club. With just an hour of play left in the day, star openers Brett Forsyth (41 not out) and Donnell (22 not out) wasted little time, gaining some valuable runs, but more importantly keeping their heads and ensuring they got through to stumps unscathed on 0/64. With 179 runs left to win, the Panthers will use a top-four spot as incentive, in what looms as a potentially season-defining day two for the club’s premiership hopes.

Meanwhile, down at Casey Fields, first-year Casey-South Melbourne batsman Luke Manders has made a maiden Premier century, compiling a patient 159 against Fitzroy-Doncaster. With the Swans on a roll with four wins in a row, skipper Lachlan Sperling elected to bat, and with Manders guiding the innings through utter concentration and wonderful stroke-play, were able to make 7/301 at stumps. Manders was well supported by in-form opener Devin Pollock (26) and Michael Wallace (33). Big Trent Lawford (2/57 off 26 overs) was by far the best of the Fitzroy bowlers, but it was Manders who truly arrived, and in a big way. It looms as a massive run-chase for the visitors next week, with their top-two hopes hanging in the balance with a loss, while the Swans will look to climb further up the ladder, and can jump in to sixth spot with a win.

MOTORING Mighty Mustang just goes hard By Ewan Kennedy UNTIL now Aussies have had to bring in secondhand Mustangs from the US of A, or perhaps some other intermediate country. While there were some imports by Ford Australia back in the mid-'60s then again in 2001, these were overpriced and the local conversion to right-hand drive should have been visually better, though mechanically they were fine. The Ford Mustang finally reached Australia in

The new Mustang looks exactly the way it should - an excellent blast from the past. 163660 A six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters can be specified. Ours had the auto, to be honest this is probably the pick of the pair for real-life driving. Though we can understand the purists who prefer a do-ityourself gearbox. There’s a nine-speaker radio in there somewhere, can’t say we spent much time listening to it. The big Mustang was far more entertaining from an audio perspective. The 2017 Mustang has Ford’s Sync 3 system with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Ford Applink 3.0. It offers increased functionality and responsiveness compared to the system in the first MY2016 Sync 2 Mustang imports to Australia. The high-resolution 8.0-inch colour touchscreen is clear and easy to read but it’s rather low on the central dash and may cause driver inattention for longer periods than we are comfortable with.

Huge tyres, big powerful Brembo brakes, wellsorted suspension and a very responsive V8 engine provide not only great driving pleasure, but also plenty of ability to stay out of trouble. Should you, or someone else, make a big mistake then you will be pleased to know Ford Mustang has received a five-star ANCAP rating. The V8 sounds and feels exactly the way a sporty V8 should. It’s lumpy at idle, produces a nice snarl even when you accelerate gently in traffic conditions - and roars when you get onto the open road and give it a bit of stick. Is this the most enjoyable V8 I’ve ever sat behind? Almost certainly yes - okay Maseratis may sound even better than this Ford, but have a look at their price tag. Snick the shifter down into Sport and the Mustang isn’t happy at very low speeds, surging and carrying on and a real hassle to drive in a carpark. Which is exactly the way it should be - you want sport, you get it. Throttle response from the non-turbo engine is virtually instantaneous and the engine is happy to rev to the top of the scale, the latter a major improvement on V8s of old. This is a big car, but it doesn’t feel like it on the road, being quick in the steering, providing reasonable feedback through the electric steering assistance and happy to hold the road at big cornering speeds. There are really only two seats worth talking about as Mustang is a 2+2 not a full four-seater if there’s anyone other than kids in the back. Seat support is good without being full-on sports units. They are adjustable for height, which will probably please those who are vertically challenged and intimidated by a very long bonnet. Inquire at Berwick Ford, 749 Princes Highway, Berwick VIC 3806. (Thanks also to whoever crashed the one we should have been road testing for a single week a few months back …) Mustang comes as a coupe (called Fastback by Ford) and convertible - ours had the hardtop, maybe we can score an open-top one next time. Ideally in winter when the weather is more suited to topdown motoring in our home area on the Gold Coast. Prices start at a ridiculously low $45,990 for the Mustang EcoBoost coupe with a manual gearbox. Ours was an auto V8, at just $59,990. Long bonnet, short tail - styling geniuses at Ford came up with this stunning theme way back in 1964. There were some shockers in the 1970s and '80s before a return to normality in the mid'90s. The current model, released in 2014 takes us right back to the styling genius stage. Inside there’s a neat and simple design for instruments and controls that works beautifully. Mustang is powered by either a 5.0-litre, twincam, four-valve V8 or a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine. The V8 has had many upgrades in recent years, with lessons learnt in developing the special-edition 2012 Mustang Boss 302. These let it breathe better, especially at higher revs. The result is power of 306 kW and 530 Nm of torque. The 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol engine reaches 233 kW and 432 Nm and isn’t to be sneezed at. So far we’ve only tested it at the Ford Proving Ground and it’s both quick and nimble.

From here to Infiniti: it’s a ride By Alistair Kennedy Our test car is the latest, and most affordable, model in the upmarket Japanese the Infiniti Q30 five-door hatchback crossover SUV. It’s also the company’s most important model, sitting as it does in Australia’s most popular, and most competitive, segment. Interestingly, because Infiniti’s parent company Renault-Nissan has a technical partnership with Daimler, the Infiniti Q30 shares a number of components, including its engines and transmission, with the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Infiniti Q30 comes in three variants (GT, Sport and Sport Premium) with the choice of three turbocharged engines, two petrol and one diesel. There’s also an all-wheel drive version called QX30 that comes in GT and Premium levels. From any angle Q30 is a classylooking and stylish vehicle with a blend of coupe, hatch and SUV depending on the angle from which it’s viewed. The front is dominated by the Infiniti family grille, an eye-catching double-arch sculpted unit fringed by narrow cat-like headlights. The profile features a deep and sharp shoulder line that runs through both the front and rear door handles together with a similar, more curvaceous line near the bottom of the door. With the exception of the headlights in the entry-level GT, which are halogen, all other exterior lights are LED including daytime running lights, foglights, tail-lights and brake lights. The Sport Premium models have a fixed-glass sunroof with powered sunshade. The GT runs on 18-inch alloy wheels, Sport and Sport Premium get 19-inch alloys. Inside the Q30 the sculpted styling continues with a series of intersecting curves along the dashboard. We particularly like the narrow A-pillars which greatly assist exterior visibility. The cabin features high quality materials with a super-soft, tactile material used to line many of the surfaces, such as door trims and the centre armrest. Sport Premium models get eightway powered front seats with three memory settings. There’s reasonable passenger space

although the rear is tight in all dimensions for taller adults. Boot space is better, at 430 litres with a wide opening and square interior. Drinkholders take up most of the space between the front seats meaning that loose items need to be stored in the smallish centre console which also houses the twin USB sockets. The entry-level GT comes with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, while the Sport and Sport Premium are available with either a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine or 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel. The 1.6-litre petrol engine in the Q30 GT delivers 115 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque from 1250 rpm. The larger turbo-petrol has maximum power up to 155 kW and torque of 350 Nm from 1200 revs. Our test car, the 2.2-litre Sport turbo-diesel comes up with 125 kW of power and peak torque of 350 Nm from an accessible 1400 to 3400 rpm.

All models share a Mercedes sevenspeed dual-clutch automatic transmission that has been re-tuned to suit the Infiniti. Standard safety features include seven airbags; enhanced braking systems forward collision warning; rear parking sensors; two ISOFIX child seat anchors; and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Sport models add lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition while the Sport Premium also gets intelligent cruise control; intelligent brake assist with distance control; blind spot monitoring; front parking sensors; 360-degree camera (Around View Monitor) with Moving Object Detection; and Intelligent Park Assist. Infiniti Q30 gets the maximum five-

star ANCAP rating. The Q30 uses the Infiniti InTouch infotainment system with a tablet-style 7.0-inch touchscreen. Selected information can also displayed on the dashboard directly in front of the driver. All models get integrated satellite navigation with Suna live traffic information. Other features include voice recognition, speed-sensitive volume control, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and twin USB socket. Sport Premium models get a premium 10-speaker Bose audio system which is also optional with the Sport. The first thing we noticed was how quiet it was courtesy of an Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system, which emits sound waves through the door speakers to counteract engine and external noises. The seats are especially comfortable thanks to a new feature Infiniti calls ‘zero gravity seats’ that mould to the curvature of the occupant’s spine to provide a consistent level of support while minimising pressure on their back muscles. Just the thing for a longdistance trip. Let’s hope it catches on. Steering is nicely weighted, responsive and linear while the ride is firm yet smooth and comfortable. A Drive Mode Selector allows the driver to switch between Standard, Eco or Sport which change the engine and transmission settings to suit their particular preference at any given time. We switched through the settings during our test and ranged between 5.6 and 7.1 litres per 100 km, averaging out at 6.4 - considerably more than the official figure, not that that’s unusual in most cars these days. Infiniti Q30 is a stunning looking car that attracted plenty of admiring looks during our week behind the wheel. Few of these admirers that talked to us recognised the badge - one even asked if it was Chinese. For the record the badge represent a road disappearing into infinity. The crossover tag means that Q30 will appeal to those looking for a pragmatic urban vehicle with the added convenience of an SUV and the availability of all-wheel drive in the QX30 variant. All Infiniti models come with a four year standard warranty although the extra year over the industry norm isn’t matched by any extra distance and so it runs out at 100,000 km.

Nissan workhorse bows out with one last prance By Ewan Kennedy Want to buy a brand-new classic old truck for a bargain price? If that question sounds like a weird contradiction let’s look at the truck in question, the Nissan Patrol Y61. The Nissan’s Y61 Patrol (wagon) and UY61 (cab-chassis) have been on Australian roads, backroads and completely off-road for the last 20 years. A throwback to simpler times, the Patrol Y61 was superseded by the Y62 series in other countries four years ago. However that huge American-oriented wagon was sold only with an equally huge petrol V8 engine - and many Aussies, particularly in rural areas weren’t keen on it. So Nissan Australia managed to get its Japanese head office to keep producing the dieselengined 61s for our market. Sadly, that couldn’t last forever and to see off the old warrior Nissan Australia has released the last of the line - the Patrol Y61 Wagon Legend Edition wagon (limited to 300 units). It comes with $10,000 of Nissan genuine accessories, and for a very tempting driveaway price of $57,990 with a five-speed manual transmission, and $60,990 for the four-speed automatic transmission. This special edition is specific to Australia. The Legend Edition has 17-inch alloy wheels with 275/65R17 tyres. Nissan Genuine Accessories are a heavy-duty steel bullbar that’s airbag

compatible, a bull bar-mounted electric winch, towbar, satellite navigation, rear-view camera, roof rack, snorkel and a soft cover for the spare wheel. Body colours are White Diamond, Polar White and Platinum. Custom decals mark this limited edition Y61 as something out of the ordinary. The Y61 Patrol Legend Edition has a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, delivering up to 118 kW of power, and torque of 380 Nm between 2000 and 2400 rpm in front of a five-speed manual gearbox. The four-speed automatic transmission can’t cope with that high torque and is limited to 354 Nm. The Y61 Patrol’s off-road capabilities are enhanced by a low ratio (2.02:1) transfer case, automatic locking free-wheeling hubs and a rear diff lock. The three-link coil-sprung front suspension aids in wheel articulation, as does the five-link rear suspension, also with coil springs. It’s not the most comfortable vehicle we’ve every driven, but there’s no doubting its off-road capability. A 95-litre main diesel tank, supplemented by a 30-litre sub-tank, provides plenty of driving range. Maximum braked-trailer towing capacities are 3200 kilograms with the manual transmission and 2500 kg with the automatic. Another reason for the special edition Patrol is that 2017 celebrates the 50th year of Nissan Motor

Company (Australia). Patrol Legend Edition is now on sale at authorised Nissan dealerships across Australia. Nissan Australia chief, Richard Emery, says, “The Nissan Patrol has chiselled its reputation for ruggedness and dependability in some of Australia’s harshest conditions. Patrol has a long list of achievements in Australia, most notably being the first vehicle to cross Australia’s remote Simpson Desert, which it did in 1962.” Naturally, the latest generation Nissan Patrol, the Y62, continues on sale. It’s powered by 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine (298 kW / 560 Nm), driving through an advanced seven-speed automatic transmission and has an electronically controlled, All Mode 4X4 system. Suspension is independent all round. The big Y62 wagon’s body can carry up to eight passengers (Ti model, seven seats in the Ti-L). Prices range from $69,990 to $96,498.
