MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION Dear STAOPCS Families, Registration for ’18–’19 is well underway! Returning student registration is closed and we will open new student registration on Monday morning for available openings. This includes applications for new siblings from our current families. We’re working to finalize next year’s school calendar and hope to have that published next week. Don’t forget that Monday, February 19th is a makeup day for one of our recent ice/snow days.

Our discipleship message this week focuses on our character trait for the month, cooperation. It is working with others to accomplish a common purpose. Cooperation is interacting with people in a respectful way that helps everyone to succeed. Jesus said that people will know we are His followers by the way we love one another (John 13:35). Love is an action verb. One of the ways we show our love is when we work together – when we cooperate. As followers of Christ we have a common foundation. A common purpose that we share is spreading the love of Christ with each other and to all we meet. It is not just a purpose, but also a privilege and responsibility. Whether we call it teamwork, helping each other or cooperation, it all makes our school community stronger when we work together.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Vacek family during this most difficult time. It has been humbling to see Christ at work among our school families, faculty and support staff, who have come forward to comfort, support and love the family in so many ways. Please look for information on service locations and times in this newsletter. Funeral attendance is a parental decision. Parents may choose to check students out for the funeral, but we will not be taking all students as a class or school. Students can be checked out for the Mass and checked back in afterwards. They will not be counted absent. Students checked out for the remainder of the day will receive a half day’s absence.

STEPS for Students is just two weeks away! We want our presence known downtown among the other Catholic schools in the Archdiocese on February 17th. It’s not too late to join our team. Visit steps4students.org for information. The money raised supports our school and helps us reach our overall fundraising goal for ’17–’18. Don’t want to run or walk – you can hit “snooze” for schools!

We gather at table with our parish family this weekend for Mass where we will hear about Jesus’ public ministry in the Gospel. What did He spend time doing? He proclaimed the Good News by preaching, praying healing people of sickness and casting out demons. He brought the message of salvation to all. Maybe we’ll attend the same Mass and get to see you there. God's blessings to everyone for a great week!

COUNSELOR’S CORNER BY JANAY O’CONNOR The character trait for February is Cooperation (Teamwork & Helping). Cooperation means working together, getting along and working as a team. Cooperation is all about helping others and interacting with people in a way that helps everyone to succeed. The social skills for February are, “How to greet others and introduce yourself” and “How to follow directions”.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR FEBRUARY  St. Anthony of Padua Quiz Bowl Team will be participating in the St. Pius Middle School Rally on Saturday, February 3rd.  Internet Safety Week is scheduled for the week of February 12–16. Our students will be participating in Internet Safety lessons, presentations and activities this week. On Monday, February 12th, Paige Hollek with Crime Stoppers will be presenting internet safety topics to our students such as staying safe online, security settings, location settings and gaming safety. Paige will also host a separate parent presentation immediately following the student presentations. The parent presentation is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in the AMR.  Our Love and Logic Parent Training series continues. The course will conclude on Thursday, February 15th.

IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES  Admission decision letters will be mailed out to our 8th graders from the various Catholic High Schools on or around Friday, March 9th.  Iowa/CogAt testing begins on Monday, April 9th  Career Awareness Week is scheduled for April 17—21. We will host our very first Career Day during that week on Friday, April 20th.

BASEBALL COACH OPENING St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School has an immediate need for a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate individual to coach our Middle School Baseball B Team for the 2018 Spring Season.

The practices and games usually occur weekdays after 3:30pm.

Practices will start next week 2/5 and games will start mid– February. The baseball season runs thru April. This is a stipend coaching position only. All SAOPCS Coaches must complete VIRTUS training.
