September 16, 2018 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Right thinking doesn’t necessarily bring right living. A life of faith truly begins when we are honest about what we want, and discovering what we truly want in life begins in relationship and not detached isolation. We begin to understand God’s desires for our lives as we spend time with others in Christian community, and in talking with God in prayer.

PRELUDE | Prelude in E-flat Major J.S. Bach, composer | Dr. Jonathan Gregoire, organist CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP *OPENING HYMN | O Church of God, United 547 | Ellacombe 1 O church of God, united to serve one common Lord, proclaim to all one message, with hearts in glad accord. Christ ever goes before us; we follow day by day with strong and eager footsteps along the upward way.

3 Though creeds and tongues may differ, they speak, O Christ, of thee; and in thy loving spirit we shall one people be. Lord, may our faithful service and singleness of aim proclaim to all the power of thy redeeming name.

2 From every land and nation the ordered ranks appear; to serve one valiant leader they come from far and near. They chant their one confession, they praise one living Lord, and place their sure dependence upon his saving word.

4 May thy great prayer be answered that we may all be one, close bound, by love united in thee, God’s blessed Son: to bring a single witness, to make the pathway bright, that souls which grope in darkness may find the one true light.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Please rise in body or spirit.

*DOXOLOGY

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him, above ye heavenly hosts; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS THIRD GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATION CONGREGATION TO CHILDREN: Receive the Word of God. Learn its stories and study its words. Its stories belong to us all, and these words speak to us all. They tell us who we are. They tell us that we belong to one another, for we are the people of God. CHILDREN RESPOND: We are eager to begin our adventure with our Bibles, but we need your help. We will have many questions. We receive these Bibles with our hands, our hearts, and our minds. Thank you. We will read and study the Bible together. CONGREGATION TO CHILDREN: We rejoice in this step in your journey with God. We pray God will guide you, your family, and us as you use this Holy Bible in your home, in your church, and in our worship. We will learn together and grow in our love for God’s Word. SUNG RESPONSE: Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear; things I would ask him to tell me if he were here: scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea, stories of Jesus, tell them to me.

OFFERTORY | How Can I Keep From Singing Taylor Davis, arranger | Chancel Choir Matthew Ho and Veronika Brzezinova, violinists My life flows on in endless song above earth’s lamentations. I hear the real, though far off hymn that hails a new creation. Through all the tumult and the strife I hear its music ringing. It sounds an echo in my soul; how can I keep from singing? While though the tempest loudly roars, I hear the truth, it liveth. And though the darkness round me close, songs in the night it giveth. No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I’m clinging. Since love is lord of heav’n and earth, how can I keep from singing? When tyrants tremble sick with fear, and hear their death knell ringing, When friends rejoice both far and near, how can I keep from singing? In prison cells and dungeon vile, our thoughts to them are winging, When friends by shame are undefiled, how can I keep from singing?
