LETTER FROM THE BOARD Parse Seco was created to act as a catalyst for art in all of its forms.

We are nonconventional to say the least. If you are looking for a well established, super wealthy, extremely well known residency you have come to the wrong place. We do know some people who we can connect you with if that's what you're seeking.

What we don't have in funds, we make up for in art, experience, community support and overall radness.

Parse Seco started in New Orleans with the wild takeover of a building in the CBD launching the first space of its kind; affordable artist living space, community performance space, outdoor sculpture gardens and a gathering space that encouraged people to be themselves.

Parse Seco is a nomadic branch of this project! As is Voss Galleries in SF .

WHY? Because we all believe in what the founders set out to do. Make Art & Do Cool Shit.

Parse Seco focuses on community outreach and acting as an amplifier for minority and emerging artists' voices.

We support our community by holding space. Space for creativity, space for mentoring the next generation of artists and at risk youth, space for people to learn and grow and be taught by our allies as well as our mountain.

As cliche as it sounds, we believe that you are deserving.

And our mission is to create an experiential learning moment that reminds you of this and produces a portfolio piece and record that will prove this to any other space that you might approach as you progress in your art career.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY The residency consists of three interrelated parts: Studio Program, Mentorship Program, and Outreach Program. The ISP provides a setting within which student and emerging artists pursuing art practice, engage in their art practice through immersion in Taos.

Artists in residence are coached to create a show proposal, matched with mentors applicable with their medium and expected outcome, assisted in curation of the show, connected with at risk youth or community groups to share their artform via community outreach and seminar, assisted in creating a public relations and marketing campaign and wrap up portfolio content.

The program is highly independent.

Outside of being a part of a living situation with other creatives, artists are challenged to navigate show execution themselves. LIVING QUARTERS Included in the residency is rent free living space. Artists will be provided 1 room at Parse Seco Parse Seco is located in the Small Town of Arroyo Seco, a village located in Taos County, NM The residence is shared with other like minded creatives.

There are 4 bedrooms, 1 airstream, 1 shared kitchen, washer & dryer, fridge, TV, access to computer and printer, 2 shared full bathrooms, 1 gallery half bathroom There is a stream and garden behind the gallery in a small backyard that backs Taos Pueblo.

The community is small and respecting others in the domain , the cleanliness of the house and the locals is not negotiable.

For everyone's safety, residents are background checked prior to move in. Applicants with felonies are not accepted. Any disrespect of the community or living quarters is causes for immediate termination of the program and expulsion from the space.

ABOUT OUR ARTISTS AND OUR COMMUNITY

Artist Responsibilities: Workshops Artist’s must conduct a workshop about their work to the local community. We encourage this! We also have a list of organizations that you could include in these workshops.

Social Media We like artists in residence. to engage the community through social media. Artist will connect with our community once a week through Parse Seco’s live feed, it could be from processes that you go through to make art or cooking food or hosting your own Deep Thoughts podcast. It does not matter what you do, as long as you connect to our community and share the behind-the-scenes of what’s going on at Parse Seco throughout your residency.

Artist will be asked to do a daily post to social media including previews of the exhibition, promotional fliers, personal updates in video, time-lapse videos of installs in the gallery, and Q&As. Connect With Community Be familiar with the other work that Parse Seco has displayed in the past. We have much of our past exhibitions and events documented on our website and our Instagram. Looking through what we have hosted in the past will hopefully give you some inspiration on what you might want to cultivate during your residency, as well as how you can successfully promote your exhibition to the community.

Gallery Hours It is important to us that the doors of Parse Seco are open so that we can share your story.

Gerneally we prefer that gallery hours are daily between 12pm and 4pm, but if you prefer an earlier or later schedule, we are ok with that well

PROJECT - a residency's timeline is based on the proposed project in consultation with Parse Seco board. We typically host residencies for 1-2 months, with time for the artist to create and then exhibit an exhibition.

Pre-Residency Proposal - A month before the residency is set to begin, the artist will submit a finalized proposal for their residency, complete with the following: 1) schedule for events, workshops, etc, 2) dates for build time and opening and closing receptions of the exhibition, 3) a list of local organizations, artists, and community members they will be coordinating with to create their exhibition, 4) timeline of personal deadlines they will need to meet in order to complete and promote their project, 5) and a list of materials and mediums that the final project / exhibition will require. A member of the Parse Seco board will work with the artist in creating this proposal connecting over email, phone, and Zoom conference call in the months leading up to the residency, so that both artist and Parse Seco are on the same page when they arrive. A great part of the residency process is recognizing that a lot of the magic will happen within the residency and so there is room for proposed ideas to expand and even change.

This proposal will in that case act as an outline to keep the final project on track throughout the residency, making sure essential aspects like promotion and community engagement are not deterred by any changes of focus within the art-making process.

Mid-Residency Review - Artists will share their work-in-progress with the board members during a mid-residency review. Reviews are helpful opportunities to discuss progress or issues with completing projects.

OUTCOME EXPECTATIONS Artistic outcomes for the program are varied and driven by the selected artists themselves and their individual project’s goals. Artists benefit directly from the immersive experience of creatively engaging and collaborating with Parse Seco’s close-knit rural community, as well as from the dedicated space and time to focus solely on their artistic practice. For Parse Seco Arts, the creative process itself is just as important, if not more so, than the final product, capstone or deliverable.

Typically, a residency will include time spent creating work to show, connecting with organizations and individuals in the local community through workshops and collaboration that might contribute to the overall exhibition, and a final exhibition of the work created during the residency. Another approach might be to use the gallery space during your entire residency as an open studio, engaging the passing foot traffic with a live demonstration of art being made or to otherwise have an interactive exhibition that expands and grows throughout its time being shown. We are a team of curators and culture-makers from around the country, and we hope to assist in giving you a hands-on experience that will grow your own personal practice as an artist.

Invitations for residencies and workshops are at the sole discretion of the Parse Seco Program and may be withdrawn or cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Residents may also be asked to leave at the sole discretion of the program.

We are a space for minority, emerging and student artist voices.

We are not a space for artists who consider themselves to be well established.

If you are well established and would like to use the space for a mentorship or community workshop, please let us know.

We are a space for the sharing of live music and good times. We are not a concert venue or a party house. We are not an after hours hang out space for the community.

Drugs are never permitted, We are pillars in the community, acting as an interactive platform for artists. We are not a museum and people will expect to be a part of your art often requesting to interact or touch the art.

We are here to provide a space for mentorship and growth and to get your to your project finish line. We are not your parents. We will not babysit, cleanup or make requests multiple times.

You must hold yourself accountable.

We are a group of individuals who care about the art community and we work hard to make the space work with what little we have.

Although we are a 501(c)(3), we are not a foundation with deep pockets.

All we have to offer is our space, our earned connections in the world of art and our knowledge. We will share everything we have, but don't have much more than that to offer.

We are in love with this tiny yet significant Parse Seco family world wide that we have created. We are not a support that will ever go away

Are there related costs to apply to Parse Seco residence?

There is no fee to apply for the Artists in Residence program.

Is there a honorariums, cash stipends, or scholarships for Parse Seco residence?

Cash stipends, honorariums, or scholarships are not offered by the Parse Seco as part of the Artist in Residence Program. We do have a 501(c)(3) certificate and are happy to provide resources to help you apply for your own grants with us acting as your fiscal agent.

Does the Parse Seco residency offer supplies?

The artists are responsible for supplying their own tools, materials, and anything necessary to complete their art work. We are happy to allow the use of anything that we have in our gallery workshop.

Can you help me with a visa?.

Not at this time.

How can I plan my arrival to Parse Seco? Can I bring a car?

Parse Seco does not offer transportation of people or artworks, these are the responsibility of the artist. The best way for transportation is by car. We have parking spaces for our artists.

What is the space like? What equipment do you have available?

What should I bring?

Artists should bring everything they need live and create. Parse Seco residence program will provide fully furnished bedroom, bathroom, along with kitchen, common space and we do have wifi. Artist will have private access to gallery 24hrs a day.

Is the space accessible for people with disabilities?

Yes!

Can I send mail to / from Parse Seco?

Yes, however is easier to use the our PO Box. The Arroyo Seco Post Office is a block away. Our mailing address is PO BOX 382 Arroyo Seco, NM 87514.

May I smoke?

We have a strict NO smoking policy inside the Parse Seco, you may smoke outside as long as you pickup all cigarette butts.

Can my spouse / family come with me to residency? Can I invite guest?.

Artists are welcome to have visitors during the residency. Visitors are limited to a two night stay. We cannot accommodate family members, partners or pets unless discussed beforehand. Artists must notify hosts as well as other housemates of planned visitors prioir to ticket purchase.

Is there an age-limit for the residency? What are the ages of the members of Parse Seco?

Our residency is open to artists over the age of 21. The house consists of creatives who are in their 20's, 30's and 40's, but enjoy working with a full range of artists in their various stages of life. Taos itself is a multigenerationally connected community and we think this creates a special environment for all sorts of learning and growth.
