2014 Welcome to Sagamore

Long part of the Worthington Valley landscape, Sagamore Farm in Glyndon, Maryland came into prominence in 1925 when Captain Isaac Emerson, the creator of Bromo Seltzer, purchased it for his daughter, Margaret Emerson Vanderbilt. Margaret, in turn, presented it to her son, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, Jr. in 1933 as a gift for his 21st birthday. Alfred owned the Farm until 1986, and under his leadership, Sagamore became a world renowned breeding and training operation for Thoroughbred horses, including many superstars such as Discovery, Native Dancer and Bed O’ Roses. All three horses, as members of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York, are a part of our history and are buried in the serene cemetery located at the heart of Sagamore Farm. In 2007, Kevin Plank, CEO and founder of performance footwear and apparel brand Under Armour, purchased Sagamore. A Maryland native, fiercely loyal to his state and the city of Baltimore, Plank vowed to bring the Farm back to its former glory and beyond. Barns and fencing have been updated, the original dormitory for Farm employees has been restored , a state-of-the-art Tapeta track has been installed, and quality pastures, the result of conscious efforts to preserve the Valley’s natural resources, abound.

Bay Filly 2011 Sagamore Homebred by Empire Maker, out of Vienna Affair Trained by Graham Motion, this homebred filly made an impressive entry into racing with a 2-2-0-0 record thus far. In her first career start, Daring Dancer broke her maiden at Laurel Park in September, 2013 and followed it up shortly after with a win at Churchill Downs. The EMPIRE MAKER filly seems to hold a great deal of potential. The Sagamore Team is thrilled to watch her mature and thrive throughout the rest of her three-year-old season.

TELL A GREAT STORY

Chestnut Filly 2010 Sagamore Homebred by Bluegrass Cat, out of Roadtohanna Termed a “dummy foal at birth due to her inability to nurse from her mother and lack of reflexes, Tell A Great Story certainly defied the term with a stunning racing career at 6-3-1-2. Tell A Great Story began her career on a high note with a win in her first start at Laurel Park. Her most notable win came in the $75,000 Go For Wand Stakes at Delaware Park in June, 2013. The brilliant filly followed that stakes win with a valiant third place finish in the Grade II Delaware Oaks in July, 2013. The Sagamore team is excited to find out what the future holds for this established four-year-old.

MONZON

SHARED ACCOUNT

WALKWITHAPURPOSE

Monzon is a horse of firsts: the first Sagamore homebred to win a Stakes race (which happened to take place on the first day of the year), the first Sagamore homebred to compete in a Triple Crown race since Native Dancer in 1953, and now the first Sagamore homebred to retire and transition into a lead pony. This amazing athlete, named after World Champion Argentine boxer, Carlos Monzon, has lived up to his namesake. He fought hard for the Sagamore Racing Team and he will continue to have a forever home here at Sagamore Farm.

Best known for winning the Grade I Breeders’ Cup World Championship Filly & Mare Turf at Churchill Downs in 2010, Shared Account remains Sagamore Racing’s Champion mare with a forever home on the Farm. This world class mare, trained by Graham Motion, retired in 2011 with a record of 18-6-4-1 and over $1.6MM in total earnings. Now part of our broodmare band, Shared Account has graced us with a colt by BERNARDINI and a filly by DISTORTED HUMOR. Still a fan favorite, Shared Account lives like a queen in the heart of the Farm and will hopefully continue to pass on her talent and beauty to her future offspring.

Recently named the 2013 3YO Maryland-bred Champion Filly, Walkwithapurpose, has a record of 7-5-0-2 with earnings over $297,000. After placing third in her first career start, Walkwithapurpose went undefeated for five consecutive races, including wins in the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship Stakes, the Wide Country Stakes, and the Caesar’s Wish Stakes. Her final start came in the Grade II Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct in April, 2013, in which she finished third. Since then, Walkwithapurpose has officially joined Sagamore’s broodmare band. As of February, 2014, the stunning filly has been checked in-foal to 2007 & 2008 Horse of the Year, CURLIN. We cannot wait to meet her first foal in 2015.

CHARGED COTTON

LISTEN BOY

Trained by Ignacio Correas, Sagamore homebred, Charged Cotton, hit the board in each of her first five career starts. The beautiful bay filly later went on to win the All Brandy Stakes at Laurel Park in 2012, after which she went on to run in the Lady Baltimore Stakes, the Mrs. Revere Stakes (GII), the Dahlia Stakes, the Gallorette Handicap (DIII) and the Rosenna Stakes. After garnering a 14-4-0-6 record, Charged Cotton retired from racing following a final win at Laurel Park in 2013. The Stakes-winning filly has since joined Sagamore Farm’s broodmare band and is currently booked to DUNKIRK for the 2014 breeding season. From foal to broodmare, Charged Cotton will come full circle as a Sagamore homebred.

Sagamore homebred, Listen Boy, broke her maiden in her second career start in 2012. As a three-year-old, Listen Boy finished strong in 2nd place in the 2013 Caesar’s Wish Stakes and retired shortly after. This gorgeous stakes-placed filly entered the Sagamore Farm broodmare band in 2014 and will look to have her first foal in 2015. Foaled here herself, she will soon come full circle along with the other homebred maiden mares of 2014.

Pride

As a proud member of the Maryland community, Sagamore prides itself on its efforts to continuously impact the environment in positive ways. In January 2013, the Farm Stewardship Certification and Assessment Program named Sagamore Farm a Certified Agricultural Conservation Steward. This program, sponsored by the Baltimore County Soil Conservation District, only certifies operations that prove their dedication to preserving and protecting the cherished farmland of Maryland. In the summer of 2013, Sagamore welcomed new workers to the Farm - some hardy honeybees. A brand new apiary containing six colonies was constructed and now houses hundreds of honeybees. Summer of 2013 brought with it a brand new apiary containing six colonies housing hundreds of honeybees. Sagamore Racing General Manager, Tom Mullikin, wanted to continue the Farm’s efforts to positively impact the environment and since honeybees play a crucial role in pollinating fruit and vegetable crops in Maryland, what

better way to do so? “Sagamore Farm consistently tries to be environmentally conscious and proactive, so we believed the addition of honeybees would positively impact the environment.” said Mullikin. “Beekeeping is a great teaching tool and a fun hobby. In the summer of 2014, we will have our first harvest of Sagamore Honey.” Local honey is said to work wonders for allergy sufferers and can be used in hundreds of ways. Aside from environmental practices, Sagamore also works diligently to give back to the community. Sagamore enjoys playing host to a multitude of groups and foundations through the offering of farm tours, family-fun days, and so much more. With such a rich and romantic history of the Farm, the Sagamore team enjoys the opportunity to share it with everyone from age two to ninety-two. “Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they tour the Farm is what it’s all about. We’re proud to provide an experience they can enjoy with their families,” said Mullikin.
