Finance Report The FMA continues to benefit from a grant by the Maryland Department of Commerce for the operation of the organization. In addition, the FMA was again awarded grants from Anne Arundel County Public Schools and Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation. The organization has seen healthy growth as a result of the partner program established in 2017. The FMA has also stepped up its funding and efforts to support the military family, veterans in transition and increase the STEM pipeline for our partners and regional employers.

The FMA Foundation has reached significant milestones throughout the year — namely raising the necessary funds to transform historic Kuhn Hall on Fort George G. Meade into a Resiliency and Education Center. The new center will be a place for soldiers, their families and DoD civilians to come together to find the resources, services and programs they need to keep them strong and resilient. The $3.6 million Ready, Strong and Connected Campaign was still underway as of May 2018 but has raised $3.3 million to date. One hundred percent of both the FMA and FMA Foundation board of directors have contributed to the campaign. A complete list of donors can be found on the FMA Foundation website at www.ftmeadealliancefoundation.org.

STEM Core, an accelerated math program which began at the Community College of Baltimore County in Fall 2017, prepares students for STEM-related careers. This year, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Leidos and Whiteford, Taylor & Preston hired interns from the program. The FMA has expanded the program to include the STEM Core Bridge, which partners Baltimore City Community College with Forest City Park High School and Digital Harbor High School to prepare 50 students for college.
In the fall and spring, the FMA hosted its signature Tech Mania for nearly 300 ninth-grade students at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). Along with the colleges, the other presenters were: Freedom Consulting, Leidos, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman Corp., Praxis Engineering and the Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. STEM Family Night, held at Arundel Mills Mall in October, showcased STEM-related activities for elementary and middle school students to help bolster their excitement about a future in STEM. The presenters included FMA members AACC, CCBC, Deloitte, Lockheed Martin, the National Electronics Museum, the National Security Agency and the University of Maryland Medical Center.

The Military & Family Committee is developing an information kiosk that will be located in the new Resiliency and Education Center at Kuhn Hall Fort Meade. Designed to serve 160,000 people on post, the Resiliency and Education Center will provide information, programs and services on all five areas of resiliency (physical, emotional, social, family and spiritual) as well as host education courses by several colleges and universities. The new kiosk will have important information on services for the military, their families and DoD employees to access on the post and in the greater Fort Meade Region. The committee is continuing to work diligently to identify additional and creative programming that could be offered at the new center. In addition, they have started work on a position paper on resiliency and the need for additional services in support of our military.
The construction management contract for Kuhn Hall was awarded to the Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. in December. The Foundation will make the official gift offer to the U.S. Army in the Summer of 2018. Construction is expected to begin in the third or fourth quarter of 2018. The 5th Annual Backyard BBQ was a smashing success raising more than $15,500 for the Foundation’s education initiatives and resiliency efforts. While the capital campaign remains a primary focus for the Foundation, the board has worked tirelessly at enhancing the “foundation” of the FMA Foundation by growing its stakeholder and donor lists, adding new leadership among the board and beginning discussions of an operations strategy after the campaign is complete.

Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation’s Military Corp Career Connections (C3) grant provides effective employment and training assistance to military personnel transitioning out of the service. The FMA helped establish a C3 Advisory Board made up of other Maryland alliances, employers and workforce experts to ensure the viability of the C3 efforts. In support of the grant, FMA members UMBC Training Centers and Leidos used their expertise to enhance the skills of transitioning military.
