1&2 Students play with drones and experience virtual reality at Tech Mania. 3&4 Elementary school students worked with hands-on demos at STEM Family Night. 5 Aaron Nichols of Whiteford, Taylor & Preston spoke to students at Digital Harbor High School.

Educating our Youth, Growing our Workforce In 2019 the FMA started a vital Education and Workforce (E&WF) Steering Committee charged with identifying specific Cyber Security/Information Technology education and skill gaps across healthcare, banking, consumer services and the defense and intelligence industry. The committee consists of Senior Executive level stakeholders from across the community whose input will be incorporated into a white paper to be provided to Educational stakeholders including the Anne Arundel and Howard County Boards of Education, Maryland Community and four-year Colleges. Additionally the FMA and E&WF Steering Committee will host a 2020 Summit where educators and employers will discuss the recommendations and frame implementation intended to bridge identified gaps. STEM Core Bridges, which partners Baltimore City Community College with Forest City Park High School and Digital Harbor High to prepare students for college, included consistent participation from FMA members. Every other month, two FMA members visited the schools to talk to the seniors about their own career paths in STEM. Project SCOPE, the FMA’s security clearance preparedness program, was presented at numerous Anne Arundel and Howard County high schools to help students understand how their decisions can affect their future, as well as the career opportunities available with security clearances. The Cyber Club at the Community College of Baltimore County also used Project SCOPE to navigate the security clearance process and debunk myths associated with the process. Each year, the Fort Meade Alliance sees the excitement build in students from elementary school to high school as they experience hands-on demonstrations from member companies through two of our most long-standing programs. STEM Family Night kicked off the Maryland STEM Festival showcasing STEM-inspired activities to more than 400 students and their parents in October. Tech Mania, which takes place twice a year, gives 9th grade students the opportunity to learn about technologies and STEM-related fields right in their backyard.

Rising Above FMA kicked off its first Rising Star Mentorship Program, which allowed young professionals to book hour-long, one-on-one meetings with a cross section of FMA board members. The conversations explored a range of topics and insights including how to develop careers, grow small businesses and maintain work-life balance amid professional advancement.

Finance Report

Connecting Businesses Meade Business Connect continued its intimate “Understanding Business at Fort Meade” series for 1- and 2-star members with topics ranging from teaming and subcontracting to rate building and alternative financing opportunities. Speaking at the Fort Meade Alliance’s Key Leader Series event in January, Lieutenant General Vincent R. Stewart, Former Deputy Commander of U.S. Cyber Command, described developments within America’s newest unified combatant command and the challenges it faces in trying to develop a new kind of fighting force to dominate an intangible and fluid battlefield. For federal contractors in the Fort Meade Region, the FMA Industry Day is a singular opportunity to gain new insights and connections. This year’s sold-out event featured valuable insights from keynote speaker Teresa Shea, former Executive Vice President of Technology for In-Q-Tel, Inc. and former NSA Director of Signals Intelligence. The government agency panel, made up of National Security’s Diane Dunshee, DISA’s Doug Packard and U.S. Cyber Command’s Stephen Schanberger, described how new leaders, reorganization efforts, changing budgets and ever evolving mission needs are impacting contracting practices. The FMA Ambassador Committee, formerly the Membership Committee, has create a strategic plan to bolster membership and ensure that new members feel more connected to the Fort Meade Alliance. The FMA managed the NSA’s Office of Small Business Programs’ Business in a Minute for the fifth year. The unclassified one-day event allows small businesses to meet with NSA and prime contractors for teaming opportunities.

The Fort Meade Alliance has experienced a nearly 20 percent growth in membership. The partner program, established in 2017, continues to grow and provide substantial financial stability for the organization. In addition to partner and membership dues, the FMA continues to benefit from a grant from the Maryland Department of Commerce for operations and grants from Anne Arundel County Public Schools and STEM Core for education and workforce development initiatives.

This year, the Fort Meade Alliance Foundation has been busy with its fundraising campaign and finalizing plans for the Fort Meade Resiliency and Education Center. The $3.6 million Ready, Strong and Connected Campaign reached its fundraising goal as a result of the generosity of so many donors. The Foundation made the official gift proffer to the U.S. Army in the Fall of 2018. This action formally signifies the Foundation’s intent and ability to renovate historic Kuhn Hall to the new center.

As a condition of accepting the gift, the Department of Defense’s new code required the replacement of windows and doors with bomb-resistant materials and provide protective fencing around external air handler units. The Army’s final approval is expected in the summer of 2019. The Foundation also began fundraising efforts for supplemental funding for the Resiliency and Education Center for additional enhancements and follow-on programming. The FMA Foundation hosted its signature sold-out Backyard BBQ on April 25 at the Ten Oaks Ballroom. With door prizes, casino games, 50/50 chances and silent auction items, this event was a huge success. We raised more than $19,000 — a record for this event. We couldn’t have done it without the support from all of our sponsors, attendees and vendors. Thank you to all donors and sponsors for supporting the Foundation’s mission.
