Sports Wrap-Up CROSS COUNTRY The St. Martin’s fall sports teams practiced hard and went up against some great competition! Each team showed dedication and improvement all season long. Success in sports can be measured in scores and trophies, but it can also be measured in other ways. When you see and feel the team’s friendship and comradery, that equals success. When you hear each coach talking about the dramatic growth of the team and the development of the players from the beginning of the season to the end, THAT defines success. St. Martin’s athletics definitely had success this fall!

The Boys and Girls Cross Country season was exciting. The team participated in the Wingfoot XC Classic in Cartersville, Ga., which is Georgia’s largest cross country race and features the best middle and high school runners in the state. St. Martin’s finished strong with the girls finishing seventh and the boy’s 13th out of 25 schools. The team then took on Wesleyan and Marist in the heat of September in two super competitive meets leading to the championship finals. At MAAC finals, both teams took home the Championship title! The girls took first place with a narrow 1-point advantage over Atlanta Classical Academy and the boys beat out Ridgeview Middle for the top spot! Two individuals on the girls team clenched first and fourth in the championship race, and for the boys, one individual placed third. Wade Hanse was the head coach of the cross country team and was assisted by Susan Murphy, Spence Camp, and Katharine Veal.

BOYS SOCCER The Boys A Soccer team started the season strong by tying their first two games against tough teams, Perimeter Christian and AIS. The boys then lost the next three. They came together and were determined to get aggressive and confident in their abilities. The boys demonstrated hard work and perseverance by finishing strong to win their last four games and missed the playoffs by just one point! Coach Alan Shafir was the fearless leader of the team. Maggie Tereshinski coached the Boys B Soccer team with passion and commitment. This team was comprised of mostly 6th graders and enjoyed a great fall together. As a group they improved steadily throughout the season and demonstrated high energy and strong skills. This young team will be tough to beat in the future! Way to go, B-Boys.
