Did You Know

The St. Martin’s fall sports teams practiced hard and went up against some great competition! Each team showed dedication and improvement all season long. Success in sports can be measured in scores and trophies, but it can also be measured in other ways. When you see and feel the team’s friendship and comradery, that equals success. When you hear each coach talking about the dramatic growth of the team and the development of the players from the beginning of the season to the end, THAT defines success. St. Martin’s athletics definitely had success this fall!

CROSS COUNTRY

The Boys and Girls Cross Country season was exciting. The team participated in the Wingfoot XC Classic in Cartersville, Ga., which is Georgia’s largest cross country race and features the best middle and high school runners in the state. St. Martin’s finished strong with the girls finishing seventh and the boy’s 13th out of 25 schools. The team then took on Wesleyan and Marist in the heat of September in two super competitive meets leading to the championship finals. At MAAC finals, both teams took home the Championship title! The girls took first place with a narrow 1-point advantage over Atlanta Classical Academy and the boys beat out Ridgeview Middle for the top spot! Two individuals on the girls team clenched first and fourth in the championship race, and for the boys, one individual placed third. Wade Hanse was the head coach of the cross country team and was assisted by Susan Murphy, Spence Camp, and Katharine Veal.

BOYS SOCCER

The Boys A Soccer team started the season strong by tying their first two games against tough teams, Perimeter Christian and AIS. The boys then lost the next three. They came together and were determined to get aggressive and confident in their abilities. The boys demonstrated hard work and perseverance by finishing strong to win their last four games and missed the playoffs by just one point! Coach Alan Shafir was the fearless leader of the team. Maggie Tereshinski coached the Boys B Soccer team with passion and commitment. This team was comprised of mostly 6th graders and enjoyed a great fall together. As a group they improved steadily throughout the season and demonstrated high energy and strong skills. This young team will be tough to beat in the future! Way to go, B-Boys.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

With 11 new girls on the A team, they lost a few games in the beginning while they found their form and learned to play as a team. They went on an impressive winning streak to tie for fourth place, barely missing the cut-off for the playoffs. The girls played hard, never gave up and improved every match. Chris Nama coached the A Girls for a fantastic fall season! The Girls B Volleyball team was a machine! They cranked out win after win, finishing 8-3 for the year. They were 7-1 in conference play. They had fun on the court and were fun to watch as well! Coach Nama also led the B-Girls. With 24 girls on the C-team, they were forced to split into two groups. Both the “Red” and “Blue” teams grew and developed all season. Michele Davis led the Blue girls while Laura Johnson led the Red girls. Parent coach Jennifer O’Leary helped out all of the C-team players. The girls’ understanding of the game and their fundamentals improved every week. They finished 5-1 for the season with the sole loss to a school’s B team. Great job C-Girls!

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Ultimate had a great season. Spencer Stephens and Brandon Collins were the team’s dedicated coaches. The boys were fun to watch and played hard. They were aggressive on defense, causing turnovers for the other team and were highlyskilled on offense. They won their end of season tournament and were one of the top teams to beat all season! They improved week after week and showed amazing sportsmanship all season long. Well done, Ultimate. n
