VICAR’S LETTER

HUMOUR Dear Friends, Jo’s Jokes

I bought my friend an elephant for his room. He said "Thanks. "I said "Don't mention it.”

My friend says to me, "What rhymes with orange?" I said, "No it doesn’t."

How many opticians does it take to change a lightbulb? Is it one or two? One... or two?

So what if I don't know what Armageddon means? It's not the end of the world.

HOLIDAY CLUB

HOLIDAY CLUB Is taking place from 31 July - 3 August at St Anne’s Community Centre

HOLIDAY CLUB

For more information and to book a place, please contact either St John's Office or Chris Stubbington on 02380 844336 or families@stjohnshythe.org

The school summer holidays are about to begin. It’s an opportunity for families to spend time with one another. It’s a time for re-creation, when we rest and relax from the busi - ness of our work activities so that we can return rest - ored. The word holiday comes from the old English word hāligdæg (hālig "holy” + dæg "day”). The word originally referred only to special religious days. In modern use, it means any special day of rest or relaxation, as opposed to normal days (weekend/days off) away from work or school. We know the importance of taking breaks. "You've got to stop and smell the roses." "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy — and Jill a lonely widow." The Bible affirms the premise — one of the Ten Commandments: "Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy ... Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work ..." (Deuteronomy 5:12-14). It’s not a suggestion; it’s a command! Jesus when his disciples came back from a busy time took them aside to a quiet place (Luke 9:10). Holidays are essential not only for our physical and mental well being, they are essential for our spiritual health. As we spend time with our families let’s also spend time with our heavenly Father in His presence recharging our spiritual batteries. Have a holistic holiday! Yours in Christ

Jo

THE WORLD CHURCH The Anglican Church of Ceylon A further article in the series on the Anglican Communion by Edgar Ruddock Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is one of the best known islands in the "East". The reason of course, is historically simple - TEA! This beautiful and exotic island off the South East coast of India has been at the heart of the global tea trade for hundreds of years. The old tea chests, carried by the sailing clippers like the Cutty Sark, bear testimony to a product that has changed and touched all of our lives. But behind the "myths" of tea, there lies a tougher story. Even today, thousands of women work in often very poor conditions to pick, dry and prepare for export the fine leaves of the tea plants that cover the hills of the central part of the island. There are two Anglican Dioceses in Sri Lanka, Colombo and Kurenagela. They are not enough to form a separate Province within the Communion, and have resisted being part of the Church of South India for many historical and cultural reasons, so they are almost unique in remaining under the direct jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The island has a population of some 21 million, divided primarily between the Singalese and Tamil peoples. This division has been at the heart of much oppression of the Tamils, and sadly, a long and bitter civil war that only ended in 2009, with the defeat of the Tamil Tigers. Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity are all strongly represented in the population. As well as the terrible war, Sri Lanka of course suffered massively in the 2004 Tsunami, and again the churches were in the forefront of the relief and reconstruction work in the country. The church's task is primarily concerned with reconciliation, and peace-making. But they are also strongly involved in issues of workers' rights, rural development, and have long had a strong hand in developing excellence in national education.

WHAT WAS SAID 100 YEARS AGO Taken from The New Forest Magazine for St. John’s, Hythe August 1917 The PATRONAL FESTIVAL. Many thanks to the Rural Dean, the Vicar of Exbury, for coming to preach to us on the feast of John Baptist To COMMUNICANTS Most of you in all probability, certainly all who have been confirmed in this parish during the last few years, received very careful instruction as to how to receive into your hands the body of our Lord Jesus Christ. It may seem perhaps to some people this matter is of little importance and there are some older people who are not accustomed to the method which has been in the church many centuries, and probably will never adopt it. It is well however that those who have been thus instructed should remember that custom which they have received is of great antiquity; it is based on some lectures or instruction given by St. Cyril, who was afterwards Bishop of Jerusalem, in the year 347 or 348, to those whom he prepared for baptism and confirmation; his words are as follows, " come not with thy wrists extended or thy fingers open, but make thy left hand as if a throne for thy right, which is on the eve of receiving the King and having hallowed thy palm, receive the body of Christ, saying after it, amen. Then after thou hast with carefulness hallowed thy eyes by the touch of the Holy Body, partake thereof: giving heed lest thou lose any of it." A custom such as this which has obtained for so many centuries in the Christian church will always be regard as of authority. The PRISONERS or WAR FUND. A branch has been formed in Hythe, Dibden, Fawley and Exbury which will be known as the New Forest (South) Branch. The object is to collect subscriptions no matter how small so as to enable the committee to guarantee and send to the central committee a regular sum every month. The central committee is responsible for sending the parcels to the men, and contributing from this branch are for the Hampshire men who are prisoners war. During June £11 was sent from Hythe and Dibden. Arrangements are being made for subscriptions to be collected each month or they may be sent direct to Mrs. Beale the Hon. Secretary, Oaklands, Hythe, who will gratefully receive them. An account of the meeting on July 4th which was well attend appeared in the local papers. The amount received each month Ns be announced in the New Forest Magazine. The committee wishes to emphasize the point that regular subscriptions are wanted, and none are too small. Everyone surely will do something. to help.

I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I sat among the people In the church of my childhood and youth I came to sing the songs of Praise, and to hear the words of truth As I looked into the faces Of the young folks, and the old And listened as I used to To the sweetest story ever told. I had come to church to meet some friends In glad reunion But the Sunday that I went to church Turned out to be Communion. And so it was, that when I rose From my Communion prayer. I no longer saw just faces, For God was standing there. Written by Pat Gibbs.

Transfiguration Brighter than the brightest sun Radiant is his transfigured face Giving light to a darkened world Promising life and love eternal An explosion of love from the cloud With a power beyond belief Giving us a glimpse of glory. From ‘A Celebration of Summer’ by David Adam Contributed by Margot Lewis

EWE MATTER School Leavers Celebration Service at St John’s Church, Hythe

Penny Joy Lady Baa Baa

A service of celebration was held in St John’s Parish Church, Hythe for the children leaving Hythe and Waterside Primary Schools. The children from both schools presented the sheep that they’d decorated and named as part of the ‘Ewe Matters’ project. ‘Ewe Matters’ was a cross curricular project run in schools throughout the Dioceses of Winchester and Portsmouth, encouraging children to think positively about their self worth as well as the value of skills of others. Waterside named their sheep ‘Penny Joy’ in tribute to their Head Teacher, Penny Bullough, who is retiring at the end of this term. Hythe Primary School named their sheep ‘Lady Baa Baa’. The children of both schools decorated their sheep using images that they felt represented their school’s ethos. The sheep will be spending their summer holidays in Hythe Library and The Carpet & Bed Gallery before returning to their respective schools in September. Each child was presented with an ‘It’s Your Move’ Booklet’ a guide to moving to Secondary School by Jo, the Vicar and Chris, the Children & Families Ministry Coordinator from St John’s.
