The Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace Where there is hatred, let me sow love Where there is injury, pardon Where there is doubt, faith Where there is despair, hope Where there is darkness, light And where there is sadness, joy O Divine Master, grant that I may Not so much seek to be consoled as to console To be understood, as to understand To be loved, as to love For it is in giving that we receive And it’s in pardoning that we are pardoned And it’s in dying that we are born to Eternal Life Amen 6

St. Francis Preparatory School President’s Message

Dear Graduates, Parents and Friends of St. Francis Prep, Thank you very much for joining us this evening as we come together once again for the Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala and induct our third group of very deserving athletes, coaches and moderators. Just as in 2014 and 2017, it is very gratifying to see the across-the-board representation of inductees from so many different sports. It is also exciting that tonight’s event also includes the recognition of three more great championship teams. Since assuming the role of President of St. Francis Prep in September 2013, I have had many opportunities to spend time visiting and speaking with our loyal alumni, many of whom are with us this evening, and I want to thank all of you who have been so supportive of our efforts. I also want to thank our Board of Trustees, our Alumni Board, my fellow Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn, dedicated administrators, faculty and staff members, devoted parents, our wonderful student body, and countless friends of the Prep. I believe this evening’s program will reflect very positively on our athletic achievements and on everything that we do at this great school. The Prep’s history dates back more than 160 years and we are continuing to prepare the school for what should be a very bright future thanks to your involvement and support, as well as the support of many other Prep graduates and friends who share your interest in our Franciscan mission. Congratulations to tonight’s inductees and championship team members, and thank you again for being with us this evening. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones. You are remembered in the prayers offered by the Brothers each and every day. Yours in St. Francis,

Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. President

2022 Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala

St. Francis Preparatory School Principal’s Message Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends, I have always been extremely proud to be part of a school with such great tradition and pride, especially when it comes to achievement by our student athletes. They have set the bar very high both in the classroom and on the field, and tonight we recognize once again the efforts of these past student athletes along with many of their coaches and moderators. Those we honor tonight have demonstrated the ability to work hard, persevere and overcome adversity. It is through that example, that model, we continue to embrace and teach our current students the culture that is St. Francis. Today, as in years past, we prepare students for college and career. Our students have the gift of a Catholic Education that challenges, supports and transforms, and they will develop the skills necessary to succeed in a constantly changing society. Tonight’s honorees have helped shape and promote the important educational mission that we look to carry out today. That mission includes “communicating” Christ and enabling all students to develop and grow their spiritual, intellectual, creative, emotional, social, and physical abilities. And in keeping with our Franciscan Tradition, all individuals in our community recognize and affirm the dignity of each person. Having said all this, and as we experience ongoing advancement and success with our current student body, continue our vast building improvement project, and perpetuate the long legacy of academic and athletic excellence, we remain true to our Franciscan Mission. In closing, I want to congratulate tonight’s honorees for their courage, passion, dedication, and the example they have set for future generations. And I thank everyone present here tonight for being deeply committed to St. Francis Prep, our values and setting standards that will serve to motivate all of us to be the best we can be. God Bless You and God Bless St. Francis Prep! Sincerely,

Patrick J. McLaughlin ‘73 Principal 2022 Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala

COACHES, MODERATORS, ATHLETIC DIRECTORS together as a family who always cheered each other on to do our very best each time we dove into the water!

NAN M. DOHERTY Swimming Nan M. Doherty, born and raised in East Meadow, was the second of five (5) Doherty children: Meg, Maureen, Matt, and John. A 1974 graduate of Holy Trinity Diocesan HS and a member of their Swim Team, Nan became a swim instructor and lifeguard for the Town of Hempstead. She competed on the St. John’s University Swim Team from 1974-77 with Lorraine Kutz Smith and they would eventually “teamup” again as co-coaches for the Terriers when Nan and Lorraine reconnected as teachers at SFP in the 1980s. Together, they added nine (9) more SFP Swimming Championships to the record books to bring to a grand total of 15 championships in only 17 seasons the SFP girls competed since the Prep became co-ed. Nan received her Master’s Degree from Boston College and her Administration degree from Queens College. She served as Assistant Principal and then Principal at St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip from 1995 until her retirement in 2017. Reminiscing about her SFP memories and achievements, Nan said, “I will always remember fondly working with so many terrific young women on the SFP Swim Team who enjoyed competing as much as they enjoyed playing and celebrating together---especially at Friendly’s after the Championships each year. Practicing early in the morning and competing at night drew us

10

Additionally, SFP was a very special time and place for me because it is where I met so many good people who continue to this day to be among my very dearest of friends---for that I am eternally grateful.”

JOYCE FORD Volleyball Joyce Ford was born in 1950. She experienced the opportunity to skip two grades---the 2nd and 8th grades---during her early education---and this gave her the chance to start pursuing the athletic career she loved at a young age. She attended Long Island City High School and then went on to Queens College, where she graduated in 1970, majoring in Physical Education and Health. Joyce was hired at Newtown High School, where she worked, coached, and refereed until August of 2007. She was elected head of Girls’ and Women’s Volleyball Officials in New York State, pioneering a path for women’s athletics when it was still very much a male-dominated field. Joyce went on to coach volleyball at Bayside High School, and then started coaching both JV and Varsity Volleyball at St Francis Prep after Mrs. Fran Fouchet retired. Under her coaching leadership and influence, Prep won three (3) Brooklyn/Queens Championships, as well as

2022 Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala

winning the City and “Metro” Championships in her very first year as coach in 1979. Joyce was twice voted the Tablet’s Coach of the Year. She was assisted during her time coaching by Liz Prohaska, Elena Laskow, Chris Burke and moderator Sister Margaret Donnelly. Not only was Joyce a successful teacher, referee, and coach, but she was a much beloved one. She stressed the importance of dedication to the sport, but she also made her teams like families, and they were very happy families. Girls who played for Joyce knew how to win, but they also knew how to lose with grace, how to help each other through difficult times, and how to have fun, participating in events like the Halloween Scavenger Hunt and the Ford Awards. Joyce now resides with her husband Jimmy in Florida, and has expressed that she feels humbled to be awarded membership in the Prep’s Ring of Honor. She expressed deep sorrow for being unable to attend the ceremony this year and sends her love and best wishes.

Team in the Terriers’ gym. This first meeting began Justin’s lifelong love for all things St. Francis Prep. While attending the Prep, Justin played football, baseball, rugby, basketball, and ran track. He graduated in 1969. After high school, Justin took a job working at the New York Fruit Auction and stayed there for many years. Justin’s wife, Ellen, worked in Catholic education her whole life. Their children all graduated from Franciscan schools: Kris (St. Anthony’s, ’87), Justin (St. Francis Prep, ’96), and Karen (St. Francis Prep, ’98). In 1991, Justin returned to coach football and baseball at St. Francis Prep. It was at this time that he worked with his good friends Vince O’Connor and Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F. As a Head Coach, Justin won two J.V. Football Championships in 2005 and 2007, and added a J.V. Baseball Championship in 2013. Justin has worked at St. Francis Prep as Locker Room Supervisor since 2013.

JOE LICATA Football Honorary Alumnus, Class of 2000 JUSTIN KELLY Baseball & Football Class of 1969, Hall of Fame 2009 Justin Kelly moved back to Woodside, Queens from Sharon, Massachusetts in May 1963. At this time, Justin made the short trip to St. Francis Prep where he met Head Football Coach Vince O’Connor and the SFP Football

Joe Licata – ‘Cata – started teaching at SFP in 1974. He retired in 2017 after 43 years of dedicated and outstanding service. Joe Licata taught foreign languages and became Chairman of the Foreign Languages Department. He was honored in the 1990s by St. John’s University as the Italian Man of the Year. He became an Honorary

Alumnus of SFP in 2000. During his teaching career, he was recognized with the Excellence in Education Award in 2010. Joe was an honoree of the SFP Golf Outing of 2015. As a teacher, his greatest love was instructing his students about the rich culture and traditions of Italy and the importance of family. Joe’s love of teaching and his students have contributed to many fond memories numerous students have of his classroom and antics they experienced. Throughout his tenure at SFP, Joe has proclaimed constantly that he never had a bad day at SFP, always feeling as if he were a Prince. ‘Cata was the Moderator of the football program for 39 years. He started moderating football with the legendary coaches Vince O’Connor and Frank Nastro. ‘Cata’s mentoring of the players is one of his greatest accomplishments as a teacher and as a man. The friendships he forged throughout those years have helped to make him the man he is today. He is eternally grateful to all of the players and coaches. Joe considers himself so very graced to have shared in the lives of the football players and to have been and still be a part of their illustrious lives. Joe’s greatest accomplishment in life is his family. He is married 34 years to his wife Rose. They are parents to seven (7) children: Giuseppina & husband, Chris & son, Gaetano, Carmelo & wife, Vincenza, Angelina & husband, Thomas, Graziella & husband, Dominick and daughter, Luciana, Salvatore, Gabriella, and Pierangelo. He now has two (2) grandchildren, whom he babysits and spoils throughout the year.

LORRAINE SMITH Swimming Lorraine Smith is the youngest of the four “Kutz” girls and grew up in Huntington, New York. She began her competitive swim career at the Huntington Y at the “old” age of 12. She competed at local, state, and National Y levels where she was a finalist in her favorite event, the backstroke. Lorraine met her husband, Gil, at the Y. He taught history for 32 years and is still coaching after 50 years. Their daughters, Marissa and Kelly, have carried on family traditions. Marissa swam competitively, was a lifeguard/ swim instructor, and currently teaches Spanish. Kelly swam competitively, was a lifeguard/ swim instructor/coach, and currently is the Aquatic Director at the Huntington Y. Lorraine attended St. John’s University where she met and swam with Nan Doherty. Lorraine was M.V.P. as a freshman and was awarded “St. John’s Woman” student/athlete as a senior. She received All American status in hr favorite event, the backstroke, as well as a member of Medley Relays. She was a record holder at the Y and at St. John’s. After college, Lorraine taught Math at Saint Francis Prep for 25 years. She coached the Girls Swim Team during the 1980s. Nan and Lorraine reunited and led the awesome swimmers at the Prep to nine Swim Championships. The swimmers developed lasting relationships and became a

“family.” Lorraine continues her lifelong relationship with the Y and swimming. From swim lessons to swim team, from lifeguard/instructor to coaching swimmers at the local, state, and national levels, the sport of swimming and the swimmers she coached will always have a special place in her heart. She enjoys watching her twin grandsons swim at the Y. Lorraine attended Huntington H.S. (class of 1975), St. John’s University (class of 1979) and received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Adelphi University (class of 1981).

ANTHONY TRUZZOLINO Football Class of 1979 Anthony “Tony” Truzzolino is the oldest son of Sal and Jean Truzzolino. Tony grew up in the East New York Section of Brooklyn and attended St. Sylvester Grammar School. Tony’s love of football and SFP began when he started playing football for the Lynvets and attended his first SFP football game at Lincoln HS in 1972. Tony attended Prep in 1975, was a member of the Football Team on which he played QB all four years. In his senior year, Tony helped contribute to the team’s 8-1 record and to their winning a NYC Division Championship. Tony went on to play quarterback at St. John’s University for two years. At SJU, he received his undergraduate degree in Marketing. In 1981, John “Zeek” Marchassalla asked Tony to be

the Offensive Coordinator for the SFP JV Football Team and, together, they coached the team to an 8-1 record as they won a JV Championship. The following year, Vince O’Connor offered Tony the Varsity Team Offensive Coordinator job where he began a 14-year varsity coaching career that included guiding eighth teams to 10 championship games yielding five CHSFL Championships and two Metro Bowl championships. All this was accomplished while he attended college, eventually married and started a family, opened a restaurant, and established himself in an esteemed professional career. All throughout his coaching time at SFP, and afterwards, Tony was committed to providing opportunities to student athletes playing football at St. Francis by establishing, in 1984, the John “Zeek” Marchassalla Fund to honor a fallen teammate and close friend. Over the years, this scholarship, which is now endowed, was awarded to 34 rising senior football players. In 2013, Tony founded the Friends of SFP Football Fund. The purpose of this fund is to help support students and their families who may not otherwise be able to afford the opportunity of an SFP education and to know and live the experience of Prep Football. Between 2013 to present, the fund has sponsored 23 young men by providing financial assistance toward the payment of tuition. During his time as an athlete and coach, Tony was devoted to making a difference in the program by affording opportunities to young men of character who could exemplify the spirit of St. Francis and to return something to the Prep and its community that he had received as a student and player.

COACHES, MODERATORS, ATHLETIC DIRECTORS

DOM VULPIS Class of 1974 Softball Dom Vulpis grew up in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn and attended St. Jerome’s Elementary School while playing C.Y.O. sports. His parents valued Catholic education as he followed in the footsteps of his brother, Frank. Dom attended the Prep and played football and ran track on a Veterans Scholarship. Dom was the Student Council Body President as the last class to graduate from North 6th Street. After SFP, Dom attended Brooklyn College and majored in Physical Education. He kept his ties close to the Franciscans through the years by returning to teach at the Prep (1979-85). Further, he coached JV Soccer, he was a JV Basketball assistant, and coached Varsity Softball while also assisting Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F. at Camp Alvernia (1979-92). Dom is most proud of his years involved with Varsity Softball. He saw the team move from the C.H.S.A.A. hardtop playgrounds using the “Clincher” softball to playing on the dirt fields and to using the “Dudley!” During his tenure as coach, the Varsity Softball Team won the 1st ever Metropolitan Softball Championship while stressing to the players the importance of becoming “women for life” and, thereby, serve communities as future teachers, doctors, lawyers, administrators. Engaging the services of Bro. Alan Zodda, O.S.F., Sr. Margaret Donnelly, and Sr. Anne Fitzgerald as role models, his Varsity Softball Teams were often found at

morning mass. He also coached the Lady Terriers at St. Francis College (1983-86), He helped to create the first full time coaching position for the Lady Terriers while moving into the Northeast Conference Division I play. During this time, Dom married the love of his life, Kathleen Ruane. Kathleen, herself, is in the C.H.S.A.A. Hall of Fame; she is a physical education teacher at St. Edmund Prep (1980-present). Together, they have three (3) awesome children who serve in the NYPD and Occupational Therapy professions. Professionally encouraged by the late John McGinley, Dom received his Master’s Degree from Queens College in Physiology of Exercise and Certificate of Administration from College of Staten Island. He taught and was an administrator in the NYC Board of Education (1985-95) and retired from the East Rockaway School District as the Director of Athletics (19952016) where he continues today as the Vice-President for the Board of Education. He is currently the Executive Director of the C.H.S.A.A. Athletics and assistant Executive Director of Section VIII Athletics in Nassau County. His “Franciscan Spirit” and the values he instilled while at the Prep live on as demonstrated by the Mayor Charles Krull Award he recently received for his exemplary service to the youth of the East Rockaway Community.

After college, he attended Yeshiva University on a National Science Foundation scholarship. In 1966, Brother became a Math teacher at St. Francis Prep and coached XC, Indoor and Outdoor Track until 1976. In the late 1960s, he helped revive the Prep program and challenged the City’s track powers of the day by winning the Mayor’s Meet in 1970 and barely missing other City titles by 1 point. In 1970, his outstanding Indoor Mile Relay Team of O’Donnell, Guevara, Guzman, and Pati created the City Championship record of 3:27.7. Brother Norman coached a number of individual athletes to wins and records in XC, Indoors and Outdoors. A number of these outstanding athletes have made the Prep all-time record list and have been inducted into the Ring of Honor including sprinter John Owens ‘71 (100 yd. dash 10.0), Mike Lizzul ‘72 (the mile in 4:15.2 and XC record of 12:57). FOOTBALL husband Lawrence have three children. Today, Dan and Julianne enjoy travelling, the theater, and having fun with their family.

DANIEL ROMANELLO Class of 1965 Daniel Romanello was born and raised in Brooklyn. He attended St. Vincent de Paul elementary school in Williamsburg where he served as an altar boy. At the age of 10, he started playing football in the neighborhood parks. He went on to attend St. Francis Prep where he joined the Football Team and Track teams. In his senior year, as Co-Captain of the Football Team, Dan played both offensive guard and defensive middle line backer on the 1964 undefeated championship team, earning All-City recognition along with receiving the Lou Gehrig Award. Dan graduated from St. John’s University where he majored in mathematics and also earned his MBA degree at the Graduate School of Business Administration. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and, upon completion of active duty, applied for a position at New York Life Insurance Company. He worked at NYL for 43 years in the Actuarial, Financial, and Marketing Management areas of the company. Community service has always been important to Dan. Among various activities he supported, he volunteered at Fordham University in the Bronx for 35 years, hosting “The Group Harmony Review” on WFUV at 90.7FM. The show was dedicated to presenting rhythm and blues and rock ‘n roll vocal group harmony and its roots. Dan married Julianne Gensler in 1970 and they have one daughter, Julie Michelle. KEVIN SLATTERY Class of 1972

TIMOTHY JOHN TUBRIDY Class of 1969 Timothy John Tubridy, the third child of the seven Tubridy children, grew up in Broad Channel, Queens where he attended St. Virgilius School. Sports have always been a part of Tim’s life starting with the Pop Warner Football Team. At St. Francis Prep, he enjoyed being a member of the many teams including track, basketball, rugby, field event teams and football. It is while a member of the Football Team that Tim earned a spot on the All-City Team. At Colgate University, Tim continued to play both football and rugby. He was a member of the New York Rugby Club and FDNY Bravest Football Team. Sharing his love for teamwork, Tim founded both the FDNY Rugby Club and the Rockaway Rugby Club. While at the FDNY, Tim rose to the rank of Captain and was active in the Broad Channel Civic Association serving as a member and president of this local organization. Tim is the proud father of seven (7) children and grandfather of twentytwo. Tim credits St. Francis Prep for instilling in him a sense of commitment to give back to society, to the environment, and to family in his daily life.

Kevin Slattery was a studentathlete involved in football, indoor & outdoor track and rugby. He made significant contributions to the Prep’s great sports legacy. As Captain and running back for the Varsity Football Team, Kevin averaged 9.5 yards per carry. He was instrumental in leading the Prep to its CHSFL Championship title in 1971. He led the CHFSL in rushing his senior year and was All CHSFL and All City. During his matriculation at Brown University, Kevin once again accomplished great things. In 1992, when he was inducted into Brown University’s Hall of Fame, the Ivy League institution about Kevin wrote: Kevin Slattery, co-captain of the 1975 team, was a quiet, unassuming young man who played with great intensity. WOMEN’S XC, TRACK AND FIELD Kim dedicates her Ring of Honor Induction to Jim. One of Kim’s PE teachers suggested that she run track. In her very first meet, she ran so well that it captured Mr. May’s attention. Kim added, “Perhaps, he finally grabbed mine! From then on, I tried always to listen to Mr. May’s advice. Even when I didn’t listen, Mr. May was patient and persistent. His guidance quickly led me to the Varsity team.” She likend Mr. May to her parents. He coached authoritatively and competently and she felt secure that he was trustworthy and not judgmental. Mr. May convinced Kim to join the Cross Country team in the off season. He believed it would make Kim a better athlete and it did. Kim says his coaching taught her how to remain calm in the heat of competition. By the time Kim graduated, the Cross Country team counted on her as one who could score points in a team competition. While on the Indoor and Outdoor Track Team, they repeatedly won City Championships and Kim earned MVP during Championships and often participated in State Championships. In addition, she co-captained for two years and broke school records. Kim’s achievements in Track helped provide her with ample colleges from which to choose. In the end, she chose Boston College. College was truly a transformation that bridged the gap between her high school track career and her adult life. Kim brought the wisdom of the Franciscans to the scholarship of the Jesuits. She started playing in an organized soccer league at the age of seven where she was the only girl on a boy’s team in Auburndale. At 11, a club coach from Long Island was putting together a group of elite soccer players and he added Stork to his team called the HBC Nasty Girls. RED & BLUE TERRIER RING OF HONOR

The 1979 St. Francis Prep Varsity Baseball Team was truly a “once-in-a-lifetime” team with a .917 winning percentage. On their way to the CHSAA City Championship that year under the leadership of Coach Jack Kehoe and Assistant Pat McLaughlin, this great team overcame many challenges but also had many accomplishments. This “Band of Brothers” never doubted themselves and were led by team captains Marty Schaetzle, Kerry Connolly and Anthony Sabatino. They were truly a team--as every member contributed to their success .They won their first 10 games that season, including games against Archbishop Molloy, Monsignor McClancy, and Christ the King before heading to Boca Raton for an Easter tournament. The team came home from a successful Florida trip and won 5 more games, including a 3-0 shutout against Mater Christi by senior pitcher Kerry Connolly. Their next game was a 13-1 win, a 2-hitter pitched by junior Kevin O’Hara and powered by home runs by senior right fielder Peter Rappa and senior third baseman Sabatino. At this point, Rappa hit home runs in four straight games. And before losing its only CHSAA game to McClancy, the 30

ST. FRANCIS PREP’S 1979 CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL TEAM

team was 7-0 in the league with two wins against Molloy, the second win featuring a game-saving defensive play by Sabatino. The overall team record was now 20-1 and Connolly threw his second shutout of the season against Holy Cross as the league record became 11-1. The team eventually finished the regular season with a 13-1 CHSAA league record and was 30-3 overall. In the playoffs, they beat Monsignor Scanlon in the quarterfinals on a game-winning hit by junior infielder Mike Papa, and then beat Power Memorial in the semifinals on a 3-hitter pitched by Mark Ketner to reach the City Championship game against Molloy. Ketner finished the year with a 10-0 record. Entering the championship game, annual powerhouse Archbishop Molloy’s team was on a 13-game winning streak following their second loss of the season to Prep. The City Championship game, played at St. John’s University, had Molloy going for its 11th title in 21 seasons under legendary coach Jack Curran. During this great Championship matchup, Connolly and Ketner pitched out of trouble time-and-time again for Prep.

2022 Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala

And timely hitting by Schaetzle, Connolly, Rappa, Anthony Lamonaca, Vinny Agusta and Bill O’Connor helped this amazing team overcome a 5-0 deficit against powerful Molloy to win the CHSAA City Championship game 8-6 in extra innings. As The Tablet wrote afterward, “The Lil’ Terriers seem to have become a closelyknit team and more determined than ever to achieve their final goal.” The overall final season record of the 1979 Championship Baseball Team was 33-3. So Let’s hear it for St. Francis Prep’s 1979 Baseball Champions!

ST. FRANCIS PREP’S

Women’s Volleyball Team 1979-1980 RED & BLUE TERRIER RING OF HONOR

The 1979-1980 Women’s Varsity Volleyball Team had the perfect combination of ability, determination, leadership, intelligence, and teamwork. Coached by Joyce Ford and Moderated by Sister Margaret Donnelly, this close-knit group began their season with the modest goals of trying to win one game at a time, improve their skills, and enjoy their season. Prep’s girls had been close to winning championships in previous years, but this talented group of athletes would merge together as the team that would ultimately bring the Metro title to St. Francis Prep. In a Tablet article dated November 22nd, Ed Wilkinson wrote, “nowhere did the sun shine brighter last weekend than in Fresh Meadows” as the SFP host girls were “upset victors” in the Diocesan Playoffs that year, beating St. Savior’s of Park Slope in a best-of-five finale. The match was tied one set apiece before, as one local sportswriter put it, “the Prep machine got on the right track.” Senior Betty Shaub and junior Chris Burke led the way in scoring, while “Renata Grassi and Liz Prohaska serves built an insurmountable lead,” wrote Wilkinson. Eileen Conley and Elena Laskow killed it at the net, thanks to great work by Terry 32

Aufiero and Patty Russell, amazing sets by Mary Joyce, Renata Grassi, and Stella Barresi, and the great leadership of Joyce Ford and Margaret Donnelly. None of this would have been possible, too, without the constant support of then Prep Women’s AD Jane Modry.

Ford’s elated and victorious Terriers went on to the Metros at Sacred Heart Academy, where they played Resurrection Academy of Rye, NY, in the semi-finals, again winning in four sets. They then moved on to defeat a talented and confident St. Mary’s team in the finals. The Tablet included Ford, Burke, and Prohaska as All-Stars that year, and the Prep’s winning volleyball tradition was born.

2022 Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala

Many of the Prep girls went on to play college volleyball, coach, or referee. Notably, Chris Burke played on scholarship for Ithaca and at the Empire Games, Mary Joyce played four full years for Fordham, and Elizabeth Schaub played for Manhattan College. Chris coached at FIT, and Chris, Liz and Elena helped coach JV here at Prep, Liz later going on to coach Girls Varsity and JV with Prep volleyball alum Denise StradowskiHeckelman. Liz and fellow Red and Blue honoree here tonight Nan Doherty also began the first Boys Varsity Volleyball team at Prep in Fresh Meadows. Patty Russell played nine years for Downstate Women’s Club Volleyball, and she has been a Varsity High School official in Westchester for over ten years. Congratulations Volleyball Champs of ‘79!

ST. FRANCIS PREP’S

Women’s Tennis Teams: 2001-2009 RED & BLUE TERRIER RING OF HONOR

A number of years ago there was a very successful play called “That Championship Season.” It told the story of an undefeated high school basketball season. Were there to be a story about the Prep’s Girls Tennis Program it would have to be titled “That Championship DECADE.” From 2000 through 2009 the Girls Tennis Teams won 167 consecutive matches, ten league championships, ten state championships and ten Mayor’s Cup Championships. The Mayor’s Cup is particularly impressive as it combines the top Public, top Private and top Catholic teams to establish the true state champion. When Athletic Director Sal Fischetti asked John Brennan to coach the girls

team in addition to the boys team, he knew they had some talent. “What I didn’t realize was that the character and leadership of the team was as exceptional as the talent,” Brennan said. When your best player is also your best team player you have the makings of championship team. Alessandra Pedergnana was such a player. Tennis is essentially an individual sport. So to have players, especially tournament players, buy into the team concept takes players of high character. Alessandra didn’t only win her matches at #1 singles she encouraged her teammates to play to their full potential to help the TEAM win. In high school tennis the #1 singles match is worth one point and the #4 doubles match is also

worth one point, so everyone’s match is of the same value to the team. St. Francis Prep had never won a Mayor’s Cup Championship going into the 2000 tournament. In the finals Prep met Cardozo who had dominated the Public Schools League. The match was tied with only third singles to be decided. Freshman Lisa Vulin displayed a tenacity and determination that was decisive on a hot June day at the National Tennis Center as Prep won its first Mayor’s Cup and began a decade of dominance in high school tennis. Winning one championship is impressive but to establish a dynasty takes a continuing influx of talent. After the 2000 championship Coach Brennan started looking for possible eighth grade girls’ tennis talent. He was told about a girl, Ellenoira Featherston, who was considering the Prep. Coach Brennan said, “After seeing her play, I knew that adding her to the team

34

2022 Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala

would make us very tough to beat. Then I found out that behind Ellenoira were two other sisters, Martina and Shinann, and a brother, Kilby, who all possessed serious tennis talent. Brennan added, “From that perspective Ellenoira became the most important recruit in Prep Tennis history. If you doubt that fact, consider that for the next seven years, as long as we had a Featherston on the girls or boys team, we never lost a championship!” Shinann Featherston was the #1 ranked player in the state in the 12’s, 14’s, 16’s and 18 year-old brackets. Eventually she was ranked in the top ten in the country. Playing at #1 singles all four years at Prep, Shinann never lost a match

and was the New York City high school singles champion all four years. In 2005, the team bused up to Syracuse with Shinann playing in the singles tournament and her sister Martina teaming with Kathrin Sorokko in the doubles. When the smoke cleared Shinann had won the singles title and Martina and Kathrin were the doubles champions. Never had players from a single high school team won both titles in a single year. Having Catholic school girls win both the singles and doubles championships proved too much for the Public Federation and they soon after decided that Catholic schools would not be invited to this annual tournament-a very backhanded compliment to the Prep’s dominance during those times.

While Alessandra and Shinann were both exceptional players and leaders, to win 167 matches in a row takes dozens of other exceptional student athletes. Kathrin Sorokko, Kathlyn Uy, Kathleen DeRienzo, Shraddha Prabhu, Nicole Rydzewski and Marylen Santos all went on to scholarships and distinguished college tennis careers. They and their teammates were talented, motivated players who paid the price for excellence and accepted subordinate roles when needed—as part of a tennis dynasty that they all had a part of and will provide them with memories for a lifetime! Congratulations Tennis Team Members 2000—2009!!

In Memory of Walter Kent

Walter Kent was the third born of seven siblings in the Kent family including: John (who predeceased him) Bro. Edward Kent, O.S.F. (former SFP English Faculty) Bro. Robert Kent, O.S.F. (SFP Alumni Director) Don Kent, (SFP Class of 1962) Terry Kent-O’Connor and Gerard Kent Walter was born and raised in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn and attended Manual Training High School (now Snyder). Walter continued his studies at St. Francis College was a member of the Class of 1967. Upon graduation, he embarked on a 31-year career at Chase Manhattan Bank (now known as JP Morgan Chase) where he served as Vice President for Operations and Technology. Walter organized the bank’s systems as it went through a series of mergers. He lived abroad for much of his career, residing in Jakarta, Mumbai, Guam, Taipei, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. Ultimately, Walter made Hong Kong his home and subsequently retired there. Walter enjoyed collecting antique maps, frequenting the Foreign Correspondents Club (where he was an active member and a regular presence) and was a shareholder in Fat Angelo’s, three Little Italy-themed restaurants in Hong Kong. Walter’s legacy of kindness, compassion and great intellect lives in the memories of his friends and family and through his support of many good causes. His estate provided a generous leadership level gift in support of The Campaign for St. Francis Prep. May he rest in peace.

Rallies in the alley, squash, track, rugby, javelin, the Skene, varsity B basketball, swimming, football, a fantastic faculty, extraordinary coaches, mentors, role models; lifetime friendships. Sweet victories over all 6 college opponents (including Yale University R.F.C. with George W. Bush on the team) by S.F.P. R.F.C.. Remember we were a high school! Tolerance, charity, brotherhood, generosity; all from a school plucked down on the north side of Williamsburg, among paint factories and foundries, with a dearth of athletic faculties at best, and yet had an infectious esprit de corps and incredible success in all endeavors of athletic and academic accomplishments. At the inevitable risk of leaving some very worthy mentors out, I would like to mention some of the major inFluencers of my life that come to mind. Brother Victor, Brother Conan, Brother deSales, Jack Monahan, Brother Owen Kapper, Brother Campion, Brother Venard, Brother Robert Kent, Vince O’Connor, Brother Benilde, Brother Owen Justinian, Brother Colum, Frank Nastro, Brother Fabian, Brother Kieran, Mr. Booras, John Barnes, Mr. Stenger, Hank Higdon, Brother Masseo, Brother Norman, Brother Carl, Brother Leonard Conway.
