Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
It has been an honor to have served as President of St. Francis Prep for twelve years now, and I continue to owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all of you who have been so supportive of our efforts here.
I say this with a heavy heart of course because, as you know, on July 17th our beloved Brother Robert Kent went to his eternal reward after courageously battling serious illness for more than a year. He will truly be missed and we have dedicated this issue of GradNews to his memory. You can read more about the life and legacy of this wonderful Franciscan on pages.
I am so glad that Brother Robert was with us for many of the events and activities of this past year. The highlight was a Gala event on April 12th at Russo’s on the Bay (Brother Robert was able to join us for a short while that night) where we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Prep’s historic move from 186 North 6th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to 6100 Francis Lewis Boulevard in Fresh Meadows, Queens, ushering in a new era as we became a great co-educational institution—and the largest, private Catholic high school in the country.
Our Gala honorees were Mike Henning ‘57, Julie Chen Moonves ’87, the late Peter Callahan ‘59 and my fellow Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn. Their devotion to the Prep has been extraordinary over the years and each of them was very worthy of the first-ever Summum Bonum award, which translated means “The Highest or Ultimate Good,” and represents St. Francis Prep’s most prestigious honor. I also want to thank the Board of Trustees, Alumni Board, the administration, our faculty and staff members, student body, devoted parents and countless friends for making this past year and the 50th Anniversary celebration so eventful.
Our June graduates received over $214 million in scholarship offers, and 99% of them are entering college this fall, including many of the most prestigious schools in the nation. This continues a longstanding trend that makes us very proud and attracts more and more students to the Prep each year.
As a result, our enrollment remains very strong—with nearly 2500 students including another incoming freshman class of over 600—with a waiting list of students who still hope to join us here! This re-affirms our approach to providing an outstanding, well-rounded education in the Franciscan tradition.
As you know too, over the past 15 years, we have made some $40 million worth of improvements to our facilities. And we will keep enhancing and updating these facilities to remain “on the cutting edge” of modern education and technology.
In fact, as we complete the East Side work (including the last of the new music rooms and student locker facilities) we are already initiating the next phase with a new $5 million capital campaign and the following priorities in mind:
• The school’s auditorium has been in dire need of refurbishment and upgrading, especially the 1000+ original seats. This is our top priority right now and is being addressed thanks to a major contribution received from Cathy and Mike Henning ’57 AND one of the most significant financial commitments ever made to the Prep—by Aimee and Bill Maroney ’55.
• There is a strong desire to establish a new Student Business Center Classroom (outfitted with modern amenities) to accommodate our Business Program and our Personal Financial Literacy Class.
• There is a need to expand the current classroom revitalization program with as many as 2000 new student desks/chairs and technology related improvements.
You will hear more about this important effort in the weeks ahead. In the meantime though, join me in reflecting on the Prep’s overall history that now dates back 167 years, with its powerful legacy, rooted in a strong Catholic, Franciscan tradition that continues today, and know that the school’s future remains very bright indeed, thanks to the incredible involvement and support of so many of our alumni and benefactors.
So, thank you very much again and God bless you for everything you continue to do for the Prep. Keep Brother Robert and the Franciscan Brothers in your prayers. Please join us at one of the events or reunions scheduled for the upcoming 2025-26 year. You are always welcome “home” again and it’s always great to see you! As Brother Robert always said, “High school is four years; St. Francis Prep is forever!”
Yours in St. Francis,
Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. President
Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F. passed into eternal life at the age of 82 and 55 years serving the Prep community as a teacher, coach and department director.

This year’s “What’s Happening @6100” column is a special one. For the first time in more than two decades it’s not authored by Brother Robert Kent—but instead it is written in honor of him. On Thursday, July 17, 2025, Brother Robert passed into eternal life at the age of 82 and 55 years serving the Prep community as a teacher, coach and department director. Nearly two years ago Brother Robert was diagnosed with MDS, or Myelodysplastic Syndromes. (MDS is a group of blood disorders where the bone marrow doesn’t produce enough healthy blood cells.) While undergoing outpatient treatment, he continued his work as Alumni Director and resided in the Franciscan Friary at SFP with the support of a team of home health care aides. Bro. Robert “soldiered on” while receiving regular treatments and blood transfusions. He was hospitalized a handful of times and always encountered (and engaged) St. Francis Prep alumni employed in the medical professions along the way!
Throughout it all, Brother Robert had the unwavering support, affection and good wishes of so many members of the Prep’s alumni, parents, faculty and staff community along with his conferees at home in the Franciscan Friary. He loved St. Francis Prep and was always engaging with the students, staff and faculty. Brother Robert participated in as many alumni events, meetings and baseball games as his medical treatment schedule and energy level would allow.
“I will forever be inspired by the fact that he remained interested and actively engaged both in-person and by phone” said SFP Alumni Board Vice President (and long time friend) Gerry Scales ‘76.
“Everyone was very happy to see him at the June 14th Terrier Red & Blue Ring of Honor nominations committee meeting” Alumni Board President, Wally Bishop ‘80 said. “His physical health had changed, but his mind remained sharp as ever... and so did his knack for providing detailed factual information about all of the athletes, games and league stats.” Approximately two weeks later Brother Robert’s condition began to decline.
A short time after leaving the Friary, Fr. Bill received word that Brother Robert had passed.
On Sunday, July 20th, scores of former and current students, teachers, coaches, and parents attended the wake at the Prep’s Our Lady of Angels Chapel. A reception was held in the cafeteria as photos of Brother Robert
connecting my dad, who was educated by the Franciscan Brothers. And I thought to myself, what a gesture! I certainly didn’t know Brother Robert that well, but I just said this is somebody who made a point to try to make connections, to look a little bit deeper.”
A call was made to Father Bill Sweeney (Prep’s former Chaplain who is currently the Pastor of St. Francis De Sales). Father Bill visited Brother Robert on Thursday afternoon to anoint and prayed with him. “He was very frail, but he was very lucid and didn’t miss a single word of the prayer” recalled Fr. Bill.
were displayed on the monitors throughout the building. The following day a funeral mass was celebrated by Bishop Robert J. Brennan at Holy Family Parish (Flushing).
Bishop Robert J. Brennan said, “Brother Robert is somebody I really only met kind of late since my coming here to the Diocese of Brooklyn. On my first visit to Prep on the Feast of Saint Francis, he gave me a simple gift
The Franciscan Brothers Superior General, Bro. Damien Novello eloquently reflected on Brother Robert’s life and vocation at the funeral mass saying: “St. Francis loved the outdoors. He danced and sang and praised God while reveling in the wonders of God’s nature. Robert loved the ball field. He came alive when coaching and being out in fresh air in all kinds of weather. St Francis taught the birds, the fish and people from all walks of life to care for each other and to love their God. Robert was a true teacher in the classroom as a coach, athletic and alumni director in his daily interactions with students and staff, he taught by his example, how to treat each other fairly, how to enjoy the victory and shake off the defeat— lessons important in all our lives. St. Francis suffered debilitating disease toward the end of his life, but bore his trials patiently; like Francis, Robert experienced his health deteriorating bit by bit. He lost much of his sight and spent many days shuttling back and forth for transfusions and treatments. Robert, like Francis, taught us how to bear suffering.
Whenever I would ask him how he was doing,
his response always was, I’m doing the best I can. And as Francis was surrounded by his brothers in his last illness, Robert was surrounded by his Brothers, family, friends and colleagues. His needs were seen to by his wonderful aides, our healthcare coordinator, Eleanor Kehoe, and, of course, by his wonderful friend, RoseAnn (Delutri ‘92). In the end, he knew that he was very much loved. God gives each of us gifts, talents, trials and crosses, all to be used to glorify Him and to help others. May we, each day, like Robert, be able to say, I’m doing the best that I can. May our brother rest in peace.”
Prep’s former chaplain, Father Bill Sweeney shared a recollection of a conversation he had with Brother Robert long ago. He told Fr. Bill, “When I go, I want you to preach at my funeral, but I don’t want it to be a sad thing.” We learned later on that Brother Robert had requested that “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” be played as the recessional hymn. Although that did not come to pass, at the graveside his brother, Don Kent ‘62, led his family and the Franciscan Brothers in “On for Ol’ St. Francis” at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn.
On social media it was evident that Brother Robert devoted his life to being a truly kind person and sharing his sense of humor. Hundreds of reactions and heartfelt comments were posted on Facebook. Some of them include:
“I truly cherished the lessons he taught both in and out of the classroom”
“What a gentle and kind person...always said hello to me in the hallways and even remembered me when I had my first born. He sent me an infant size SFP Terrier shirt.”
“He was an authentic person with a great sense of humor.”
“Amazing math teacher”
“So funny and caring”;
“He always talked about the ‘Brooklyn’ Dodgers with such great enthusiasm.”
Brother Robert’s sports legacy began at Holy Name of Jesus parish in Park Slope, where he attended grammar school and played Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) baseball as a center fielder and shortstop. He loved the Brooklyn Dodgers and remembered being heartbroken when Bobby Thomson of the New York Giants hit his famous “Shot Heard Round the World” to propel the Giants over the Dodgers for the 1951 National League pennant.
The moment was so painful for him that he
could recall exactly where he was as a 9-yearold — staring through the window at a blackand-white television showing the ballgame outside Farrell’s Bar & Grill on Prospect Park West in Windsor Terrace.
“We were kids; we were crying,” Brother Robert told The Tablet in 2014. “If you were a Dodger fan, you knew what was going to happen. You knew something was going to go wrong.”
As if this pain weren’t enough for the youngster, he was devastated when the Dodgers packed up their Brooklyn home and moved west to Los Angeles after the 1957 season. At least Brother Robert was able to wear the official Dodger uniform, since Ebbets Field announcer Tex Rickards gave them all to the Holy Name CYO team following the move.
Although it took a while for his woes to subside, Brother Robert continued to enjoy his love of baseball, often playing in the Parade Grounds. He also had a calling to religious life at a young age, so he followed his older brother Ed to the St. Anthony Juniorate in Smithtown, New York, to become a religious brother.
While studying at St. John’s University, Jamaica, he coached CYO basketball and baseball, where it all began — at Holy Name. He then entered the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn
in 1966, starting at the St. Francis Novitiate in Upper Brookville, New York.
In the fall of 1968, Brother Robert was assigned as a history teacher and assistant athletic director at St. Francis Prep, which was then located in Williamsburg. By 1971, he had become the school’s athletic director and helped guide the move to Fresh Meadows, all while continuing to teach social studies and math. He played a pivotal role in the 1974-75 merger of the student-athletes from Bishop Reilly and St. Francis Prep.
Along the way, his coaching responsibilities included 23 years as the freshman boys’ basketball coach, 14 years as the head junior varsity baseball coach, and more than 40 years as the head varsity baseball coach. His baseball teams won five junior varsity and four varsity city championships, most recently in 2023.
Brother Robert helped more than 140 of his players continue their baseball careers in college, with 10 of them going on to play professionally. In 1998, he received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, and began his tenure as The Prep’s director of alumni relations.
For the past two seasons, Brother Robert’s illness forced him to take a step back from coaching. Yet he still checked in daily with acting head coach Robert McDermott about the team’s happenings and the entire CHSAA.
McDermott, who was named CHSAA Coach of the Year this past season, threw a one-hitter at Shea Stadium to clinch St. Francis Prep’s 1986 city title win, so it was fitting that he became the successor to the longtime Terriers coach.
In total, Brother Robert’s varsity baseball teams won more than 700 games. The list of accolades is endless and includes multiple Coach of the Year awards, a 2003 induction into the CHSAA Hall of Fame, a 2008
induction into the Frank McGuire Foundation Hall of Fame, a 2025 induction into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame, a coaching excellence award in 2018 from the Greater New York Sandlot Athletic Alliance, and being named as part of the inaugural St. Francis Prep Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor in 2014.
All these accolades aside, Brother Robert enjoyed developing relationships with the people in the Catholic league, more so over the years. Indeed, his legacy will not be measured by wins, but rather by the guidance and leadership he provided to countless studentathletes at The Prep.
“It’s not about me,” said Brother Robert, who coached the children of more than 50 of his players and even a few grandchildren. “It’s all my assistant coaches and my players. They deserve most of the credit. There were so many great coaches and players.
“While there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team,’ there’s certainly no ‘I’ in ‘coach’ either. The players win the games, really. The coach just makes a couple of decisions, but eventually the players have to buy into your system.”
To celebrate his dedication and passion for the school, they established the Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F., Scholarship Fund while he was alive to benefit students in need of financial assistance, and named its book store in his honor this past school year. (See story on p. 32)
Over the past few seasons Brother Robert told the kids in the baseball program; “Remember 406.” It was a reference to how Ted Williams didn’t quit in the final days of the 1941 season. Williams could have sat out a doubleheader to preserve his .400 average. But rather than take the easy way out by skipping one or both games, Williams played both and went 6 for 8 and finished with a .406 average. His decision to play those last two games didn’t come fast or easy. On the day of the double header, the coaching staff asked Williams how he wanted
to handle it. Williams said, “I want to play it out. I want to play it all the way.” Brother Robert followed this example of courage, sportsmanship and faith.
His siblings, Brother Ed, Don, Gerard and Terry gathered around his bedside in the Friary the day before he passed. “He fought to the end. He was humble and kind. He loved baseball, the Brooklyn Dodgers and St. Francis Prep!” his sister Terry said.
He was a true Franciscan and remains a pillar of sportsmanship, fair play, respect for the game, and teamwork. May he rest in peace!

October 24 , 2024: The 3-on-3 Hoops Tournament and the post-tournament reception with the scores of raffle prizes, are only part of the larger story which makes this event like no other. It’s a night of friendly competition. Moreover, it’s all about families and community who have stood together. Many of the faithful annual participants (and friends who “drop in”) were just teenagers from surrounding neighborhoods who developed lasting bonds of friendship at St. Francis Prep that developed into a community; a community that has continued to grow and welcome others!
Alumni, family and friends gather in remembrance of Jimmy Prendergast ‘79 (who passed away at an early age as a result of cancer), his father, James H’11 (who also passed from cancer in 2012) and Brian O’Connor ‘86, who was also a regular participant in the tournament. Brian passed away in March 2017 at the age of 48 after fighting a long battle with Cancer. His wife, Trisha and their three children; Nicole, Stephanie and Ryan are present each year.
A team of SFP Alumni Board volunteers led by Nancy Demers ‘91 registered the teams, sorted out the vast number of donated raffle prizes and sold raffles. Nancy served as the emcee at the reception! John Keene ‘81, proprietor of The Blarney Stone, catered the hot buffett dinner! Thank you to all of our event sponsors, raffle prize donors, alumni board volunteers and attendees.
It is the tradition of the Catholic Church to celebrate a Mass of Remembrance on the first weekend of November. On Sunday, November 5th, alumni, family and friends gathered at Prep for the Annual Alumni Memorial Mass. Father Sean M. Suckiel (Pastor of Holy Family Parish) celebrated Mass who was “standing in” for Prep’s Chaplain, Fr. Ralph Edel who was recuperating from knee surgery. Just prior to the start of Mass, the new additions to the Pathway to St. Francis were blessed and a memorial scholarship award presentation was made. As each name was called out, alumni and family members brought a candle forward and placed it near the altar in remembrance of their loved ones. After mass, alumni gathered in the gym for the Raising of the Banners of Honor Brunch was served in the remodeled student dining room immediately afterwards.

Proceeds of this event will benefit The First Responders Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship has been established at St. Francis Prep through the generosity of Christopher J. Greene and Teresa Downing-Greene ‘81. The purpose of this scholarship fund will be to ease the burden of tuition each year for a deserving senior student. Preference will be given (but not limited to) children of Police, Fire or Emergency Medical personnel.
The scholarship award will be presented on September 11th each year in memory of a fallen hero and member of the Police Department, Fire Department or Emergency Medical Team who made the ultimate sacrifice either on 9/11 or in the performance of their duties before or after the tragic events of 9/11.
If you would like to join the Greene’s in honoring and remembering the selfless sacrifice of all our fallen heroes as we commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11, donations to the fund would be greatly appreciated so that many deserving students will benefit in the years to come. The First Responders Memorial Scholarship Fund will be a permanently endowed scholarship fund at the Prep. Register on the Prep’s Alumni Website: alumni.sfponline.org

On Saturday, December 14, 2025 the Christmas tradition that was started by the late Sr. Joseph Agnes Hohmann more than three decades ago continued! Under the leadership of faculty members, Ann Marie Rich (Science) and Suzanne Camus (Social Studies) SFP demonstrates the true meaning of Christmas: service to others in the Franciscan tradition. Each year support is provided by the SFP Parent’s Guild and our Terrier Student Athletes and Coaches. They all work side-by-side to help seat the guests, serve them food and distribute all of the donated gifts. (Alumni, Parents, Students and Alumni pitch in with cash contributions and/or gifts.) Our regional alumni chapters help carry on the Terrier Spirit and Pride by bringing alumni back together when they relocate to cities and states outside the New York area. Over the past few years Prep has held regional alumni chapter events in Florida, Boston, Arizona and Washington, D.C. Our late Alumni Director Bro. Robert Kent often said, “If you live too far away and can’t come to the Prep, we’ll bring the Prep to you!” Our 30th Annual Florida Alumni Reception alternates between the east coast and the west coast. Alumni from across a wide spectrum of graduation years from all across the sunshine state have participated for the past three decades.
Each year the Prep reserves a block of tickets for a spring training game and host a dinner reception. Its always a great deal of fun as some New York based alumni make a weekend out of it to catch up with their old friends who have relocated to Florida. And many of the participants have made new friends and consider this a reunion!
Prep owes a debt of gratitude to our wonderful hosts, Retired Tampa Police Department Assistant Chief, Marc J. Hamlin ‘84 and his wonderful wife, Paige for hosting us at the Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club in Valrico, Florida.
On March 17th, Alumni, Faculty/Staff, Irish Club, Student Government and the Cheer Teams marched alongside the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn and the St. Anthony’s High School Pipe & Drums in celebration of our Irish heritage at the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We were cheered on by Terrier alumni and friends who lined the parade route.

Dear Friends,
It is often said that all good things must come to an end, and so with that thought in mind I made it known to Brother Leonard back in January that end-of-fiscal year 2025 would become my “swan song” after 21 wonderful years at the helm of Prep’s Office of Development, overseeing the school’s fundraising activities.
Little did I know however, that our beloved Alumni Director, Brother Robert Kent, with whom I had spent many hours at alumni board meetings, alumni reunions, receptions, spring training baseball games, Notre Dame football games and many other events, would be leaving us for a much “higher calling” on July 17th.
In the days that have followed it definitely feels different. Brother Robert was part of the “fabric” of this building complex. He knew every nook and cranny better than anyone, and each day he could be seen just about anywhere in the school or “down the road” at Cunningham Park at any given time—always with a smile and a friendly “how ya doin’?” He will certainly be missed around here and I leave with many pleasant and proud memories of our work together, building alumni and donor involvement in this great school.
When I’m asked about “highlights” of the past 21 years, the following immediately come to mind:
• St. Francis Prep’s 150th Anniversary celebrations in 2008-09 and the associated and successful capital campaigns
which were conducted in the years that followed and helped fund new physical education, art, science, music, student cafeteria and locker rooms, infrastructure and other major improvements to the school;
• The establishment of TerrierSTAR (Student Tuition Assistance and Relief) during the Covid pandemic which helped so many students and their families in need at that time—many of whom would have left the school if not for this “lifeline”—generously supported by hundreds of alumni whose gifts were “matched” by Julie Chen Moonves ’87;
• This past spring’s celebration of the Prep’s 50th Anniversary of its historic move from Brooklyn to Queens when we honored the most “impactful” individuals the school has known since its arrival in Fresh Meadows for the start of the 1974-75 year: Mike Henning ’57; the late Peter Callahan ’59; Julie Chen Moonves ’87; and the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn whose 167 year tradition remains central to the Prep’s educational mission today;
• The growth, development and incredibly high quality of our database (which is among the most comprehensive and current in the nation at the high school level) and our two major publications: GradNews and Annual Report of Contributions.
Needless to say, none of the could have been accomplished without the terrific team of Associate Directors of Development, Mike Graziano and Sally Khan; Assistant to
the Director and Office Manager, Kim Perinuzzi; and our great Alumni Director, Brother Robert Kent (RIP) and his assistant. Jen Hohmann.
Our wonderful partnership with the Alumni Board of Directors has also been a key to the success we’ve enjoyed the past 20 plus years, and I owe a debt of gratitude to their unwavering commitment and support--led by their amazing leaders Wally Bishop ’80 and Gerry Scales ’76. Thank you! Most importantly, it has always been apparent that our alumni and other generous benefactors support the Prep largely because of the great work performed by our dedicated faculty and staff members who go “above and beyond” with the time and attention they devote to the students--both inside and outside the classroom. And our students succeed!
This is why our donors have always felt confident in the “investments” they have made here. ($50 million was raised for the school over the past 20 years!) So many thanks to the members of the faculty and staff for all you do!
Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn, especially
Brother Leonard Conway and St. Francis Prep’s Board of Trustees, for offering me this opportunity 21 years ago, and for putting their faith and trust in me. Together, along with Principal, Pat McLaughlin and his administrative team, we have been able to meet a wide array of challenges, raise the Prep to new heights and create one of the most attractive academic and extracurricular environments for high school students in the New York area.
For this I will always be proud and will never forget Brother Robert’s motto: “High School is Four Years; St. Francis Prep is Forever!”
Thank you again for everything you have done for me—and for this great school!
Sincerely,
Robert T. Angeletti ‘H11 Director of Development (Ret.)
Prep’s professional networking chapters help create long-term value for alumni by providing professionals and recent graduates the occasion to learn about opportunities and new developments in their field. The 2025 Legal & Healthcare Professions chapter reception was an exceptional occasion that brought together alumni from a wide variety of professional experiences. Thanks to our sponsors for underwriting the cost of the admission. Thanks to: Felicia Varlese ‘79, Mike Mongelli ‘79, Bill Viscovich ‘79, Tom Gebert ‘79 and Charles Casolaro ‘88 for your generous support of this chapter and St. Francis Prep.

Bobby Mulvena ‘76, one of the key organizers sent a message to Brother Leonard and Patrick McLaughlin after the event that summarizes the night perfectly. He wrote: “I have never been prouder to be a Terrier. The event on Friday night was fabulous! We had surprise attendees Coach Don Holden and teammate Bobby Jones. I have not seen them since 1976. We had three of five starters for the 1976 team. Tommy and his family were thrilled to death. Now they have photos for their grandchildren to cherish forever.”
He continued, “The video board in front of the main entrance with Tommy’s graduation photo was a nice touch. SFP did not miss anything. High School is four year, SFP is forever is so true. The reception in the cafeteria was perfect. The class of 1976 graduated 49 years ago. When we got together in the cafeteria it felt like we saw each other last week. Many stories both true and almost true were told. Hopefully the current students realize that they may be sitting next to future lifelong friends.
St. Francis Prep’s Career Night is important for students because it exposes them to diverse professions and helps them connect their education to real-world goals. Prep builds their confidence in their potential by introducing them to professionals who talk about different career paths and the education needed for them. Students can make more informed decisions about their academic and future career decisions. This preparedness leads to a clearer sense of purpose. We invite all alumni to come back and give back to the next generation of Terriers! Alumni Board Members Sal Cochiario ‘13 and John Morana ‘07 spearheaded the effort in conjunction with Robyn Armon (Director of College Office and Counseling/Guidance) and assistant principal Chris Mendolia ‘87.
On Monday, May 12th, nearly 400 Juniors and Seniors signed up to participate and 40+ enthusiastic Terrier Alumni (representing a wide range of industries and professional experience levels) shared their wisdom and advice. It began with a panel discussion from several distinguished professionals. They covered a variety of topics— from discerning a career path to exploring college scholarship opportunities and the benefits of networking as a student.
After the keynote panel, students were provided an opportunity to meet in smaller, “breakout sessions” in classrooms with alumni from specific fields: legal professions, health care, first responders, educators, media, etc. Alumni shared stories of how they chose their career paths and spoke about the rewards, challenges and opportunities.

In another session, Natalia Lozada ‘13 (An Arm & A Leg Productions) and her classmate Kelly Rose Nuziatta ‘13 both spoke about how they changed careers after a few years.
Natalia said, “I graduated with a Health Science major and a Psychology minor from Quinnipiac University. I’m proud of that accomplishment, and I’m proud of the work I did in healthcare. I was a scientist—a research coordinator. But my life took a turn when I realized what I really wanted to do was something totally different—I wanted to make movies.” She started her own production business and said, “I am a business owner in a

creative field. But I do as much in a non-creative one too. I’m a film producer, writer, and recently, a director. But I also do the work of an accountant in my business.”
The decision didn’t come easy. Natalia explained, “At 25, I was staring into what felt like an abyss. Start over? Yikes. It was terrifying in more ways than one, but what was scarier was the thought of not pursuing something I had thought about so intensely for as long as I could remember. So I went for it. I dove in headfirst. I took night classes in film production while working during the day. I met others just like me, and to make a long story short, we all decided to take the leap together and start a production company. It’s been risky, frustrating, overwhelming—but also rewarding, liberating, empowering.”
She offered this advice, “Chase what makes you happy. Work hard. Have fun. Experience life. Love the lows as much as the highs. The rest will follow.”
Natalia impressed upon the students, “I’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t crossed paths with the beast of confusion along the way. What I’ve learned in my short time in the world of adulthood is this: What you do for a living— the thing that pays your bills, rent, groceries, all the non-fun stuff—doesn’t have to define you. It can, if you choose, and that’s totally fine. But if you decide it won’t, that’s okay too. The word career, in all its ‘standing tall’ glory, can only cast a shadow as big as you allow it.” Every break out session at Career Night offered great pearls of wisdom and insights that only come with life experience.
If you’re interested in sharing your experience and helping to make a difference in the life of a student, consider participating in the Career Night program. Email the Alumni Office at alumni@stfrancisprep.org and provide your contact information.
On for Ol’ St. Francis!
On Friday, March 28th, the SFP Bookstore was officially dedicated in honor of Brother Robert Kent, OSF, Alumni Director & Baseball Coach who has served St. Francis Prep for more than half a century.
Decades before Brother Robert was appointed SFP Alumni Director, he served as the Prep’s Athletic Director in addition to teaching and coaching basketball and baseball. And like every high school coach and athletic director he had the responsibility of outfitting players with uniforms.
Witnessing how the growth of major sports brands transformed the uniform landscape Brother Robert saw an opportunity as more options, greater marketing and promotional efforts were being directed into high school sports. Working with local wholesale dealers that serve as the intermediaries between the big brands and the school, Bro. Rob took advantage of deep discounting programs. He would often purchase “closeouts” (at or near cost) and had the items custom embroidered with the Terrier for special alumni events such as the Annual 5K Fun Run (currently known as the Annual First Responders Family Day), Homecoming Weekend, just to name a few. Other items he created for resale to the public.
Bro. Robert meticulously maintained his inventory and would periodically create a “pop-up” apparel store in the front lobby around Christmas-time. It was very lucrative and successful because of the support he received from his faithful friends on the staff; Graziella Zerelli ‘97, Lisa Jones, Jackie Mancuso, RoseAnn Delutri ‘92, Justine Kosinski and Boston Charles just to name a few. Along the way he collaborated with SFP Bookstore manager Carol Kennedy-Schneider ‘79 and incorporated many of the most popular and best-selling items that she procured for the Bookstore.
“Over the past two decades, Brother Robert has established a reputation as a savvy buyer and marketer of Prep branded apparel. He supplemented and expanded upon the many fine offerings available in the Prep’s school bookstore, promoted the school and made people very happy in the process.”
said Brother Leonard Conway, Prep’s President.
“The Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F Terrier Store” will be officially dedicated after a total renovation of the current space is completed. The new store will be much larger and encompass much of the adjacent spaces that are currently utilized for storage.
At the ceremony Brother Robert was humbled and simply said, “Thank you. I’m very honored...” In a one-on-one interview after the ceremony Brother Robert said, “I have to thank everybody....particularly Brother Lenny, Pat, Carol everyone who contributed by helping to sell, store and sort the merchandise over the years.”
In the mid 1970’s Brother Leonard Conway taught Math, Accounting and later introduced Prep students to the first computer programming class. During the summers, he took on the management of Camp Alvernia. In 1983 the Franciscan Brothers appointed him to serve as Prep’s Principal—a role held for over 35 year. The late, Brother Gabriel O’Brien, O.S.F. (who served as the Superior General of the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn until is untimely passing in December 2024) said, “Brother Leonard is truly deserving of this honor and is St. Francis Prep’s very own “Renaissance man”.
Br. Leonard,
It was great to see you at the Gala! Congratulations on 50 years at Fresh Meadows. I am sure you are likely getting a number of emails like this, but I wanted to express my gratitude to you for that first computer course back in 1975.
I still have some paper tape from that course and tell the tale of my first programming class using that tape being read and fed to an IBM machine somewhere on Wall Street via a 300-baud acoustically-coupled modem!
Heady times, indeed! Fast forward 50 years and I am a University Teaching Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. I helped create the undergrad CS program here in 1988, was its first director, and will graduate my 4,000 advisee/alum this May (including 4 students who are the sons/ daughters of past advisees).
Your course helped launch me on this path and it has been a great ride.
See you in September!

Theresa (Tracy) Houseman, 25 year faculty member of the Prep Math Department passed away in October 2024. Having grown up struggling with math herself, she made it her mission to instill confidence in her students and make math fun. And she succeeded.
A product of Catholic education her entire life, Tracy attended Our Lady of Mercy grammar school, St. Francis Prep and earned a B.S. in Finance and M.S. in Education from Fordham University. She was a devout Catholic and a woman of faith who served as a Dominican nun for six years. She was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy and at Prep she was the “Mama Bear” of the Math Department.
St. Francis Prep held a Memorial Mass on Wednesday, March 19th in the school chapel . Following Mass, family, colleagues, current and former students went to Tracy’s classroom (E-105) for a blessing and dedication of the classroom in her memory. A reception followed in the cafeteria.
Tracy will be forever remembered for her dedication to her students and for all of the love and support she showed her colleagues.
On Saturday, April 12th we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Prep’s relocation from Brooklyn to Queens. It was a joyful Gala celebration attended by 800 alumni, faculty/staff, and other special guests at Russo’s on the Bay for a night of celebration and reflection!
We are grateful to the many attendees who made the evening so wonderful. Special thanks to our esteemed alumni honorees who made the evening a resounding success. The evening’s program was available for all to view via live stream and can be watched visiting the SFP Alumni Website.
The Summum Bonum Gold Medal (Summum Bonum is a Latin expression meaning the Highest or Ultimate good) and this award was bestowed upon Michael A. Henning ‘57, Julie Chen Moonves ‘87, Peter J. Callahan ‘59 (posthumously) and The Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn.
Our Gala entertainers were: The New York Tenors (Daniel Rodriguez, Andy Cooney and Christopher Macchio) delighted and entertained our Gala Honorees while actor, comedian and radio host, Joe Piscopo served as Master of Ceremonies.
High school is four years; Prep is forever!
A half century ago these lady Terriers met a freshmen and are still the best of friends! After seeing this image from the Gala, one them recalled that they posed for a similar picture at Graduation in 1978!
The outpouring of love, passion, and enthusiasm for our school community from alumni, staff, and faculty was truly impressive. The gala was a living testament to the phrase, “High school is four years, St. Francis Prep is Forever.”

We wish Diane all the best as she embraces this exciting opportunity.
Susan Sparagna ‘78 of the Religion Department faculty has retired as of the 2024-25 academic year! “Susan was a great model of a teacher putting her students first in all she did. She always taught according to the school mission and believed in developing each student socially, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.” said Patrick McLaughlin, SFP’s Principal.
Attesting to her spirit, Prep colleague and friend Graziella Zerelli ‘99 said, “She loved teaching and put her heart and soul into her classes.” Adding, “She was truly a Franciscan at heart.” Sue is also was an enthusiastic participant in the Prep’s Class of 1978. Sue began her teaching career at Prep in 1995 and now has time to “smell the roses”. Thank you for being an exceptional teacher and a spirited member of the Terrier Alumni community! After seven and a half years of faithful and dedicated service, our beloved School Chaplain, Father Ralph Edel has left St. Francis Prep at the end of the 2024-25 school year. Bishop Brennan has placed him back in parish ministry.
Prior to joining SFP, Fr. Ralph served for a year at St. Margaret’s Church in Middle Village where he made the same wonderful impression on the students and teachers in it’s elementary school as he did here. A volunteer in the Religious Education program recalled, “When Fr. Ralph was at St. Margaret’s he would come to the classroom and chat with my students. He would also engage them in the school yard before and after class.”
While we are saddened to see him go, we are deeply grateful for the profound impact he has had on the lives of our students, faculty, staff, and families. During his time at Prep, Father Ralph has provided spiritual guidance, emotional support, and a caring presence to all. His commitment to nurturing a welcoming and compassionate school environment has left a lasting legacy that will continue to bless our community for years to come.
Father Ralph has been a pillar of spiritual leadership through his work with Campus Ministry. Prep’s Principal, Patrick McLaughlin said, “He helped build a strong culture of Catholic identity and mission in our school. His guidance and vision have shaped retreats, liturgies, service opportunities, and countless moments of quiet pastoral care—all of which have brought the heart of our faith to life in meaningful and lasting ways. His presence has helped students not only grow in their faith but also discover what it means to live with compassion, integrity, and purpose.”
In a farewell email to the Prep community, Fr. Ralph wrote, “I really appreciate all you have done for me these past 7 1/2 years that I’ve been privileged to serve at Prep....you have had a big impact on helping form me into the priest I am today.”
Please join us in praying for Father Ralph’s continued success and blessings in the next chapter of his vocation.
St. Francis Preparatory School welcomes Fr. Thimote Cherelus who has been assigned as chaplain for the school community. Fr. Tim is coming to us after serving as Parochial Vicar at St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church in Ridgewood.

Lori was inducted into the Buffalo State Rugby Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 3, 2025 as a member of the 1978-1980 Women’s Rugby Team. Speaking of the team a school representative said, “[They] paved the way for women’s rugby at Buffalo State and beyond, setting the foundation for the strong program we honor today. Their dedication, skill, and perseverance helped to define the early years of the sport, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire generations of athletes.” Congratulations, Lori!
On May 8th , Dr. Prakash Patel ’17, a recent graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, returned to SFP to speak to Mr. James LaRocca’s AP Biology class. Dr. Patel, who recently matched into a general surgery residency, shared insights about medical school, career prep, and balancing commitments. He engaged students with a mock diagnosis activity and welcomed their questions. His visit inspired students and highlighted how their hard work at Prep will pay off. Dr. Patel enjoyed the experience just as much!
Thank you Dr. Patel!
Rachel Luscher ‘19 visited Prep’s Media Studies class. Rachel shared insights from her college days at Hofstra University and her experience working in radio and journalism —including covering a presidential election! She also shared details about her current role as Digital Coordinator at the New York Islanders as a reporter covering the NY Islanders. “It was awesome having her back and hearing her story!” said Paul J. DeBenedittis ‘88, teacher of Media Studies Instruction at Prep.

St. Francis Prep is a Catholic, Franciscan, college preparatory school where we treat all of Creation with dignity and respect. As instruments of God’s peace, justice, and love, we form leaders who achieve academic excellence, create community, and proclaim joy and hope.
Patrick McLaughlin (Principal) attended the National Catholic Educators Association (NCEA) national convention and was a presenter in a session entitled: “Coaches as Catholic Educators” which has been a two year collaboration with the Diocese of Brooklyn High School Principals Association, Catholic School Administrators Association of New York State (CSAANYS). The goal of the session was to present a framework for better sportsmanship with student-athletes, coaches and spectators. He and Carol Hayes (Executive President of CSAANYS) were the speakers.
Dear Brother Conway and Principal McLaughlin,
I write with a message of praise and appreciation. My 9-year-old son and I had the pleasure of taking a flight this morning with your young men’s baseball team from JFK to Charleston. Your young men were kind, respectful, and engaging – including having a conversation with my son about baseball.
At our elementary and middle school, I aspire to mold our boys into young Christian leaders and I enjoyed seeing what they could be one day in your young men. Their generous spirits and exemplary behavior reminded me of 1 Timothy 4:12.
Congratulations on forming young men that represented your school and our Christian faith so well.
Yours in Christ,
Gerard O’Shea Holy City Christian Academy Mount Pleasant, SC
Dear Br. Conway,
On December 11, the St Francis Prep Dance Team performed at Dancing Dreams ( www. DancingDreams.org), a nonprofit dance program for children with physical challenges. The event was coordinated by SFP students Luna Jaramillo, Alessandra Viscoso, Emma Neos and Liana Michaels , all of whom volunteer weekly at our program.
The SFP Dance Team is a credit to your school. Each and every SFP dancer was kind, compassionate and polite, taking the time to meet and greet our dancers.
Our families and dancers had a wonderful holiday treat thanks to your students.
With gratitude, Joann Ferrara Founder, Executive Director Dancing Dreams
On June 8, the feast of Pentecost, Religion Department Faculty member, Jennifer LoCascio participated in the Eucharistic Congress called “Behold” hosted at St. Anthony’s High School by the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
In the spirit of reviving devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, thousands of people gathered to adore Jesus in the Eucharist through Mass, Eucharistic adoration, and profound talks from various guest speakers. It was a great opportunity to spend time reflecting on our Lord’s consistent presence in our lives and how we are called to share the joy of His Eucharistic Presence with others.
Jennifer said, “I really enjoyed my experience; many of my friends and loved ones, including my fiancé and sister, were involved in making this event possible. I hope and pray that the fruit from the Congress leads to greater conversion towards Christ, the Eucharist and His Church.”
June 25 - July 3, 2025
Founded by the same religious congregation of Franciscan Brothers in Ireland, St. Francis Prep and Saint Francis in Lare, Kenya share a common mission of transforming young people’s lives through education. Over the past 15 years, the Prep community has worked to help transform the school into a modern school in a not so modern part of Kenya.
This summer’s visit to the Saint Francis Schools in Lare, Kenya was filled with “progress and promise,” explained Director of Campus Ministry, Dr. Christian Sullivan. “We had a great team who shared their expertise with the school communities and who were profoundly impacted by the special work that takes place in Lare.”
The team was composed of Prep’s principal Patrick McLaughlin ‘73 and wife Kathy McLaughlin; Media Studies teacher and SFPTV Moderator, Paul DeBenedittis, ‘88; and, Director of Campus Ministry, Dr. Christian Sullivan and wife Karen.
The busy itinerary included touring different Franciscan ministries and local grammar schools; celebrating Mass at St. Francis of Assisi parish; visits to the Lare dental clinic re-opened by Dr. Joseph Pantaleo, ‘03, and homes of Upendo scholarship students; and leading several enrichment activities at St. Francis Secondary and Junior Schools.
“It was powerful to see the results of our sustained efforts for almost 15 years. We have helped transform the campus into a modern high school. Seeing the solar powered bore hole, water towers, cement pathways, tiled classroom floors, expanded kitchen, computer lab, basketball court and the new bus is impressive. But more importantly, our new Upendo sponsorship program is transforming the lives of students giving them a real chance to escape poverty by providing them with a Franciscan education.,” stated McLaughlin.
The last day included a special school lunch served by the American visitors and a presentation of gifts from Lare Principal Victor Momanyi. Bro. Bernard Kariuki, OSF, Chairman of the Board, also shared his thanks proclaiming that “the future of the Saint Francis Schools is very promising with the continued support from our American cousins. May God bless all our friends in New York!”

Cunningham Park Turf Field project Approved by the New York City Council.
Prep’s Principal, Patrick McLaughlin announced: “I was informed by the Queens Borough President Donovan Richards that the construction of the Cunningham Park Turf Field project that we have been requesting for many years has been approved by the New York City Council.
The new turf fields will provide our students with a safe, state-of-theart environment for team sports and recreational activities. These improvements will not only enhance the student experience but also serve as a valuable resource for our entire school community for years to come. Although the full scope of the project has not yet been determined, we know that our Athletic department and athletes as well as the greater Fresh Meadows community will greatly benefit from this work.
I thank our team here at SFP, Sal Fischetti, Lisa Schaefer, Brother Leonard, Rose Ann Delutri, Graziella
Zerilli, and Joe DiSomma, who have been working diligently in contacting local representatives to make this a reality. I also thank and acknowledge our representatives in city government who understood our needs and supported the project, Mayor Adams, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and NYC Council Member Linda Lee.
A special thanks to the entire Vallone Family, who were instrumental in working with our City officials and spreading the good news about the benefits to the community for such a project. Leading the charge was Charlie Vallone, Class of 2025 and Student Body President.
Upon completion, the fields will be dedicated to Paul Vallone, who was instrumental in guiding us through the process of requesting such a project. We are deeply grateful to our local government partners for recognizing
the importance of quality athletic and recreational spaces in education. We would also like to thank the many members of our school community whose advocacy and support helped bring this vision to life.
We are not certain when construction is expected to begin. We will keep you informed as the project progresses.
