Founded by the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn in 1858

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I want to take this opportunity to recognize and offer my heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed to making this 31st Annual St. Francis Prep Golf Classic an incredible success! It is always “a breath of fresh air” to be out and about at a wonderful event like this once again.

As I have said each year, we owe the success of this Golf Classic event to the hard work and dedication of so many participants, staff members and volunteers. In the end though, each year we come together with our Franciscan spirit and pride to honor some wonderful individuals and their families! And this year is no exception. My heartfelt gratitude and congratulations go to:

The Gebert Family and Franco Purificato ‘94

Franco and the Gebert Family exemplify the best of our Franciscan tradition. They have helped us promote academic excellence, true sportsmanship, generosity, and service to others--traits that have distinguished the St. Francis Prep community since its founding in Brooklyn more than 160 years ago. Thank you for helping us carry on this legacy!

Also, thank you to all of our golfers, dinner guests, key sponsors, journal advertisers, and hole and tee sponsors, especially Lisa and Bob Adams ‘80, our overall Event & Diner Sponsors once again. The commemorative journal is one of the largest we have seen for this event. This is a reflection of your devotion and generous commitment to the Prep, as well as your warm feelings about our honorees. And our nearly 2500 students are very thankful for your support!

Finally, I want to express my gratitude to all the members of the SFP Alumni Board, the Golf Classic Committee and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. You work together to organize this event each year and I truly appreciate your efforts. Thank you!

Have a great day and a wonderful summer!

Yours in St. Francis,

“It Is In Giving That We Receive”

Franco Purificato ‘94

St. Francis Prep Social Studies Faculty Member and Head Coach, Varsity Boys Soccer

Franco Purificato discovered and pursued his passions early in life: Teaching and Soccer —both as a player and a coach. His enthusiasm, spirit and work ethic is the same in the classroom and on the soccer field. This has helped propel his students and athletes alike to discover and develop their abilities and attain high levels of achievement.

Born and raised in Queens, Franco grew up in a traditional Italian household. His parents, Giovanni and Concetta, immigrated from Italy. His father owned and operated a graphic design firm in Manhattan and his mother took care of the home and their family of three boys—Antonio, Franco and Vincenzo.

Franco attended St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr School in Ozone Park, NY. In 1990, he entered St. Francis Prep as a freshman and played soccer--a passion of his that began when he was just 7 years old.

“I’ve known Franco since became a student at SFP and his spirit and enthusiasm has carried over into his lengthy and successful career in both teaching and coaching” said Prep’s Athletic Director, Sal Fischetti ‘83.

CHERRY VALLEY CLUB, GARDEN CITY, NY • June 16, 2025

Upon graduating from SFP in 1994, he went on to study at St. John’s University where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. It was then he chose to pursue his life’s work as a teacher by studying Secondary Education with a concentration in Social Studies.

In 1998, he began his professional career at St. Stanislaus B&M School as a 6th grade teacher. A year later he joined the Prep’s Social Studies Department and is well-regarded by his students and colleagues.

“Franco is a very dedicated and valued member of the school community...he plays an integral role on our Faculty and Staff Leadership team and brings wisdom, experience and knowledge to all that he does” said Prep’s Principal, Patrick McLaughlin ‘73.

In 2024, Franco was honored at the Feast of Saint Francis Day Mass for 25 years of dedicated teaching service.

Soccer and Coaching

His passion for soccer is evident in his successful coaching tenure. In 1994 when he began serving as the assistant junior varsity coach he led the team to a City Championship in 1996. “Franco’s technical knowledge of soccer has contributed to the success of the program” said Sal Fischetti. He added, “We are blessed to have talented players and Franco takes the talents and molds them into a great team.”

In 2000, Franco was appointed Head Varsity Coach and has held the position ever since. Franco’s career varsity coaching record is 287 wins, 103 losses, 68 draws. Under his leadership the Prep soccer program has earned:

• Ten Brooklyn/Queens Championships

• Six Varsity City Championships

• One State Championship

• One Mayor’s Cup Trophy

• Named CHSAA Soccer Coach of the Year (2003)

Marriage and Family

Franco and his wonderful wife, Melanie were married in 2009 and have three children:

• Francesco, SFP Class of 2018

• Carolina, (incoming) SFP Class of 2029

• Marco (too early to determine)

All three children have embraced soccer and weekends in the Purificato home are often spent supporting and nurturing the athletic pursuits of Marco and Carolina.

Franco has earned a place of distinction in the hearts and minds of his students, colleagues and parents. His department Chairperson Mrs. Diane Haussermann summed it best by saying:

“As a veteran member of the Social Studies Department, Franco has not only shaped the lives of countless students with his passion and commitment to the classroom, but has also served as a mentor and role model to other teachers.” She added, “His collaborative spirit and willingness to guide fellow educators, has helped foster a supportive, innovative teaching environment. His influence extends far beyond his own classroom, supporting the concerns of teachers throughout the school, making Franco a cornerstone of not only the social studies department but also the school community and a true leader at St. Francis Prep.”

Congratulations, Franco!

The Gebert Family

Michael ‘11, Matthew ‘08, Brendan, Jennifer ‘99 and their parents Liz and Tom ‘79
St. Francis Prep is delighted to honor The Gebert Family at the 31st Annual Golf Classic!

Michael Gebert Class of 2011

Everyone who knew Michael would say the same thing—he was the family member and friend you always wanted around.

The one who would drop everything to help and give you the shirt off his back. His selflessness and unwavering kindness defined him.

Mike graduated from St. Margaret’s in Middle Village before enrolling at St. Francis. While at Prep, he was a dedicated athlete, playing Varsity Hockey and Football. His leadership, character, and team-first attitude earned him the Hank “Hawk” McMahon Scholarship his senior year, awarded to a player who exemplifies

unselfish dedication. More than just an athlete, Mike embodied the Franciscan values that SFP holds dear—compassion, justice, integrity, reverence, service, and stewardship.

Among the many strong relationships he formed at Prep, one of the most meaningful was with his Italian teacher, Mr. Licata, who remained an important mentor in his life.

After graduating from SFP in 2011, Mike attended St. John’s University, where he earned his B.A. and took part in a study abroad program in Rome, Italy. Even while pursuing his degree, Mike stayed connected to his Prep roots, returning to coach SFP Football and give back to the community that had shaped him.

In 2016, Mike achieved his dream of becoming a New York City Firefighter, joining Engine 324 / Division 14 in Corona.

He cherished the camaraderie of the firehouse but also dedicated time to teaching young firefighters at the FDNY Fire Academy on Roosevelt Island.

Despite his immense strength, Mike faced challenges no one should have to endure. Twice he overcame battles with cancer before ultimately succumbing to the disease on September 11, 2022, at just 28 years of age. Through it all, he never complained— facing every battle with a smile and an unwavering spirit.

To honor his memory, the FF Michael H. Gebert Memorial Foundation was established in 2022. The foundation is committed to preserving Mike’s legacy of generosity and selflessness by raising money for rare cancer research, supporting families fighting cancer, and assisting FDNY members facing serious illnesses. Since its formation the foundation has raised over $40,000 directly for rare cancer research, donated over $25,000 to FDNY families and organizations to ease the plight of those diagnosed with cancer and is in line to donate a vehicle to the Fire Family Transport Foundation ensuring continued support for FDNY families in need.

In addition, the SFP Hockey Family led by SFP Hockey Coach Tommy Farragher, Giancarlo “Rac” Racanelli ’04 with the support of Brother Rob and A.D. Sal Fischetti organized the Michael H. Gebert Memorial Alumni Tournament, held annually in December at World Ice Arena in Flushing, Queens. The event unites current players, alumni, and firefighters for a night

of camaraderie and competition, all while raising funds for the foundation.

To further honor Mike, the Michael H. Gebert Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Gebert Family to support deserving St. Francis Prep students and their families. This permanent scholarship serves as a tribute to Mike’s spirit and the values he lived by, ensuring that his legacy of kindness, perseverance, and community support continues to inspire future generations of Prep students.

To put into words what Mike meant to us is no easy task. He was larger than life, always lifting up those around him. He embraced every moment, never letting his struggles define him. He was a warrior, a leader, and a hero—forever remembered, forever missed. 93’til Infinity!

Matthew Gebert Class of 2008

After attending St. Thomas Apostle in Woodhaven, Matt continued his education at St. Francis, where he excelled as a running back on the Freshman, JV, and Varsity football teams under the guidance of coach Justin Kelly (JV), legendary coach Vincent O’Connor, and current head coach Rich Carroll.

Matt graduated from St. Francis Prep in 2008 and went on to play football at Western Connecticut State University,

where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. He gained valuable experience interning with the football teams at Rutgers and Columbia Universities before furthering his education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a master’s degree in applied Kinesiology. While at Minnesota, he worked as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for both the Hockey and Baseball teams.

In 2014, Matt interned as a Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He later served as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Purdue University (2015-2016), Florida International University (2017-2019), Stanford University (2020-2022), and Indiana University (2023) and Arizona University (2024).

In April, 2025, Matt was hired as the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning Coach for Football at the Auburn University. He is currently working towards his PhD in Sports Science at Liberty University.

Brendan Gebert

A regular attendee of the Prep Golf Classic, Brendan’s journey led him to Archbishop Molloy High School, where he was a member of the varsity ice hockey team. After graduating in 2001, he earned a B.A. from Queens College. He returned to Molloy as an assistant coach for the 2008 city championship team.

In 2011, Brendan co-founded WeBleedBlue, a New York Rangers-themed apparel company that has grown into a fanfavorite brand. What started as a passion project has become a thriving business, with merchandise available online and in Madison Square Garden retail stores. Brendan lives in Bayside with his wife, Bridget.

Jennifer Gebert Class of 1999

Jenn’s passion for education and service was shaped during her years at St. Francis, where she was deeply influenced by the Franciscan values and strong sense of community. A proud graduate of the Class of 1999, she was actively involved in the volleyball team and the National Art Honor Society, experiences that nurtured her love for both sports and the arts. Inspired by the role models around her, she pursued a career in art education, graduating from Marist College in 2003.

Her journey took her to Oahu, Hawaii, where she taught in the Mililani School District before returning to New York to earn her Master’s in Art Education from Adelphi University. With over 20 years of experience in education, Jenn has dedicated 18 years to the NYC Department of Education, including 17 years as a teacher at Flushing High School. She now serves as the Assistant Principal at Veritas Academy in Flushing, continuing her commitment to shaping young minds.

St. Francis

Beyond her career, Jenn remains devoted to giving back. She helps organize events for the FF Michael H. Gebert Memorial Foundation, honoring the legacy of her late brother, Michael. She also enjoys traveling and spending time at home in Oceanside with her husband, Pat, and their beloved pup, Hank.

Jenn holds her time at St. Francis Prep close to her heart, cherishing the friendships, lessons, and memories that helped shape her path.

*On for ol’ St. Francis!*

Thomas ’79 & Liz Gebert

Long time supporters of the Golf Classic, Tom and his wife, Liz (nee Hinchey), raised their family in St. Thomas the Apostle parish in Woodhaven, where they lived before moving to St. Margaret’s parish in Middle Village in 2000, where they still reside. Liz is a registered nurse in the Great Neck School District.

Born and raised in Woodhaven as one of eleven children of Henry and Jane Gebert, Tom’s upbringing was grounded in hard work and strong values. His parents made tremendous sacrifices to send their children to Catholic schools, believing that a good education and moral compass were key to success in life.

Tom attended St. Thomas Apostle in Woodhaven before moving on to St. Francis Prep, where he spent three years on the swim team and was part of the group that formed the school’s roller hockey club. He graduated from Prep in 1979 and went on to St. John’s University, earning a BA in 1983. During his time at St. John’s, he returned to Prep as a student teacher before pursuing his law degree St. John’s Law School, graduating in 1986.

Tom is a 40 year veteran of the title insurance and real estate industry, as well as a practicing attorney. He began his career in the title business while attending law school, working for his friend and mentor, Queens attorney and title expert Pete Brogan.

In 1997, Tom joined title agency Prime Land Services as General Manager and Counsel. He later became a partner in the company, which eventually merged into Primary Land Services. He currently serves as President and Chief Counsel, overseeing the company’s day-to-day operations.

The Gebert Family from Crasto & Associates, P.C.

Anthony Crasto ‘82

In the summer of 1974, Brother Thomas O’Neill was charged with moving the physical plant of St. Francis Prep (desks, books , equipment etc.) from 186 North 6th Street in Williamsburg to 6100 Francis Lewis Boulevard in Fresh Meadows. Brother Thomas hired some local Prepsters from Greenpoint, Billy Dobranski, his brother Tommy, Bobby Mulvena and a few other students , to help with this historic move.

In 1986, Billy Dobranski joined the NYPD, where he spent the next 20 years serving the City of New York. While in the Youth Services Division, Billy recognized a need to help some young students attain a better education than what was being offered them by the public schools. Realizing the impact that his Catholic education at St. Francis Prep had on him, Billy wanted to share that experience with others.

In 1996, Billy founded Faith in The Future, a non-profit organization that assists young people who, because of special circumstances, could not otherwise afford a Catholic education. Catholic education helps give students the moral compass they will need to guide them in a challenging and changing world. We also support several seminarians as they pursue their vocation to priesthood. We hope that they will more clearly hear the words of Jesus and feel the love of God. In so doing, we have become our brother’s keeper.

Now in our 30th year, Faith in The Future has developed a strong and loyal following that continues to grow each year. Hundreds of students and seminarians have benefited from our program. Your help is vital if we are to continue this particularly important work of charity. The Bible says, “to those who have been given much, much is expected” I hope you will help give a child the gift of Catholic education. Faith In the Future is fully registered as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Your donation is greatly appreciated.
