One of the most enjoyable roles of being Mayor is the opportunity to talk with both residents and visitors as I walk around our great little city. I thought it might be interesting for your readers to hear what visitors like the most about St. Marys.

St. Marys fared better than most of our coastal neighbors when Hurricane Matthew swept through last fall. Our beautiful city and neighboring Cumberland Island were back in business almost immediately following the storm. If you are thinking of visiting in these cooler winter months, our weather is still warm and inviting so we encourage you, your friends and relatives to come on down!

Almost everyone talks about our waterfront location that allows for easy kayaking access and transportation to Cumberland Island to enjoy the natural wonders of the world famous national seashore treasure. Our summer and fall festivals, Music in the Park, Crooked River, year round golf and fishing also rank high with visitors. Others cite low density traffic and the close proximity to shopping, lodging and an international airport.

Or up, as the case may be as we have many visitors arriving from Florida as well. The Georgia Welcome Center at Exit 1 just as you cross from Florida into Georgia has been re-furbished and has re-opened to welcome all to our great state and offering dozens of ideas for spending time in St. Marys.

Those seeking potential retirement locations are impressed with the fact that we are home to one of the best rated hospitals in rural Georgia. Visitors who are seeking a new life and can work remotely often mention our excellent school system and our year round temperate weather climate. The fact that St. Marys has so many different residential neighborhoods, each unique in its own way, gives us an advantage for those looking for a new place to call home.

While our waterfront, rivers and entryway to Cumberland Island remain our most popular attractions, we enjoy year-round entertainment venues like steam train rides and community theatre presentations at Theatre by the Trax. Kayaking continues to grow in popularity as do bicycle touring and races. Our History Walk is proving to be an enjoyable historical stroll through the long history of our waterfront village. We are known for our family friendly parades and festivals with February featuring our very own version of the Mardi Gras. Our historic hotel, modern motels, and charming bed and breakfasts provide lodging for all tastes and budgets while restaurants in midtown, downtown and the west side offer a variety of casual dining options.

Those of us fortunate enough to call St. Marys home already recognize its many attributes but sometimes our visitors provide a reminder of just how special our city is.

Whether you are here for an outdoor adventure or just want to enjoy time in a peaceful, quiet, laid back and friendly community, St. Marys is the place to spend a week, weekend or longer. Many will fall in love and move here to call St. Marys home.

Live in Awe!

For those of you who always look to the spine of the magazine for our secret message, this is it for Issue 36.

Having published this magazine for 18 years now, I’m in “Awe” of that simple fact. You see, my career has always been (prior to moving to St. Marys)— “start a company, build a company, make it successful, than sell it.” Before St. Marys Magazine, the trend was to turn over a business every two years. I like to create and build, but not usually fond of maintaining. However, the experience of publishing St. Marys Magazine has been totally different. I like to think it’s because I love St. Marys so much, I want to share the wonder of it all with the world. I want others to experience the “awe” that I do every time I walk along the waterfront or visit Cumberland Island.

Awe can never be overrated. And it’s not just an emotional thing—it’s a real neurobiological thing. In fact, Awe, Compassion, Kindness, Joy, Laughter, Playfulness, Light-heartedness, and Wonder don’t simply feel good, they are a recipe for wellbeing and longevity.

Marcus Aurelius said, “Dwell in the beauty of life. Watch the stars and see yourself running with them.”

That, my friends, is “Awe.” Be the little boy or little girl you once were. Find wonder in nature. In life. In others. Everyone has within themselves an eternal child. Children are crammed with marvel. Start seeing things as if for the first time. Imagine your first awesome sunset. Your first sighting of the ocean. Your first scent of honeysuckle. The first time you tasted pizza (or whatever your favorite food is). Now, try to experience all those things as if for the first time. Savor. Really savor the beauty of what is before you.

People often ask me why I’m so happy all the time. People ask me how I’m doing and I most often say, “Never been better.” It’s true because I do stay in awe of life. Remember, the little things are the big things. Live in Awe!

Southern literature: the very term defies restrictive definitions, and yet it is a compelling and legendary presence on the world's literary stage. Is it the collected works of authors born and raised in the Deep South? Or is it sensibility, topic, pattern of speech, and presentation? Mark Twain, considered by many to be the father of southern literature, represents the characteristics that many people associate with the genre yet—although he often referred to himself as a "southern writer,”—his birthplace of Missouri is not traditionally considered to be part of the South. And what of writers such as New York native John Berendt and his masterpiece Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil with its brilliant evocation of the very essence of Savannah? Surely, it must be included in the stellar pantheon of southern literature.

So clearly, while geography may often play a role, the geographical birthplace of the author is not the primary factor in southern writing.

Perhaps it is the shared and unique history. Certain themes such as slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, family, religion, community, dialect, and the overwhelming sense of "place" emerge consistently throughout the best of southern literature.

Or is it, quite simply, a way of viewing the world around one and then portraying that vision with inimitable elegance and emotional honesty? As with all things in the Deep South, we must look to the past for answers.

The South as a distinct and remarkable culture emerged in the early 1800s. During this pre-Civil War period, an extraordinary literary community was established in Charleston, South Carolina. In the second half of the 19th century, the South lost the Civil War and suffered through

Reconstruction (what many white southerners considered a cruel and unjust occupation). In place of the previous literary works—paeans to the "plantation way of life”— came poetry and novels about the glories of the South's Civil War fight. Prominent writers such as Henry Timrod, Sidney Lanier, and Thomas Nelson Page represent this romanticized perspective.

In 1884, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) published what is perhaps the most influential southern novel of the 19th century, The Adventur es of Huckleberry Finn Ernest Hemingway stated, "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn ." This statement is particularly true of southern literature due to the novel's bold approach to the topic of race.

And then came the great renaissance of American literature: the outpouring of astounding works by such authors as Tennessee Williams, Katherine Anne Porter, Thomas Wolfe, Caroline Gordon, and others. Artists began to explore the outer reaches of creativity and shook up the status quo with such literary devices as Faulkner's "stream of consciousness" narrative.

No discussion of the southern literature of this period would be remotely complete without mention of Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 novel, Gone With the Wind. After winning the 1937 Pulitzer Prize and, in 1939, becoming a universally acclaimed movie, Mitchell’s sprawling magnum opus heralded a wave of popularity the likes of which southern literature had not previously experienced.

The 1940s brought a glorious burst of brilliance with the stunning To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and the

works of newly accepted African American and female authors. Zora Neal Hurston, Dori Sanders, Sterling Allen Brown, Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Conner, Carson McCullers, and dozens more streaked across the literary heavens like a blazing comet shower.

Today, the definition of southern literature remains stubbornly elusive. As soon as one dares to presume that we have grasped the shape and content, one is compelled to expand the dimensions and depth of understanding. Authors such as Ferrol Sams, Pat Conroy, Anne Tyler, Cormac McCarthy, Fannie Flagg, Tom Wolfe, Barbara Kingsolver, John Grisham, Anne Rice, Terry Kay, and many others challenge our views and consistently redefine the field.

I have given great consideration to a question that was posed to me recently: “Who would you consider the ‘top three’ of southern literature?”

Before being so presumptuous as to nominate my favorites, I would suggest that those who have yet to sample the sumptuous buffet of southern literature begin with the lush— yet light—works of authors such as Anne Rivers Siddons and Dorothea Benton Frank. These books, rich in ambience and texture, will prime your palette for the more challenging and sensual flavors of my “top three.”

Though my choices will, no doubt, elicit a thunderous symphony of dissenting voices, I would cite Harper Lee, Pat Conroy, and Ferrol Sams as my personal icons of this most narrow and yet all-encompassing genre. (I use the term “all-encompassing” quite consciously for, to my mind, southern literature represents the full spectrum of human experience—magnified, dissected, and made enduring through imagery and phrase.)

These three authors indelibly imprinted the feeling, honor, and wondrous beauty of the South within the universal conscious mind. They created characters that have become more real than reality and serve as shortcuts for human communication. Scout, Jem and Atticus Finch; Conrack and the Great Santini; the unforgettable Porter Osborne, Jr.—we would all be lesser individuals (and poorer as a collective

whole) without their presence in our lives and spirits.

Nelle Harper Lee, the youngest of the four children of Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee, was born in Monroeville, Alabama, on April 28, 1926. Her father, a former newspaper editor, was a lawyer who served in the Alabama State Legislature from 1926 to 1938. As a child, Lee was an unrepentant tomboy and a voracious reader who delighted in the company of her schoolmate and neighbor, the young Truman Capote. (One wonders what rarified air and circumstance bred such genius in these children. How I would love to eavesdrop on their childhood conversations!)

Lee enrolled at the all-female Huntingdon College in Montgomery (1944–45), and then pursued a law degree at the University of Alabama (1945–49). She chose not to continue with her legal degree, studied for a summer in Oxford, England, and then returned to New York, where she worked as a reservation clerk at an airlines desk.

Harper continued in this line of work until the late 50s, when she decided to devote herself to writing. She lived a simple life, traveling between her bleak apartment in New York to her home in Alabama where she cared for her ailing and beloved father. We can see her now—far from the blossoming South, transplanted to the cold bustle of a metropolis and conjuring the words to frame a time, a place, and a people.

Having written several long stories, Harper found an agent in November 1956. During the following month at the East 50th townhouse, she received the extraordinary gift of a year's wages with a note: "You have one year off from your job to write whatever you please. Merry Christmas." Within that single year, she had completed the first draft of her timeless classic, To Kill A Mockingbird

In the words of Harper Lee, “I never expected any sort of success with Mockingbird I was hoping for a quick and merciful death at the hands of the reviewers but, at the same time, I sort of hoped someone would like it enough to give me encouragement—public encouragement. I hoped for a little, as I said, but I got rather a whole lot, and in

some ways this was just about as frightening as the quick, merciful death I’d expected.”

With that one novel, Harper Lee set the standard by which all fathers shall be measured and all lost innocence mourned.

Pat Conroy, born on October 26, 1945, in Atlanta, Georgia, was the eldest child of seven children born to Marine Colonel Donald Conroy and his wife, Peggy. His father, a US Marine Corps pilot, was (according to Conroy and others) both physically and emotionally abusive. The resultant agony and angst of his tumultuous childhood breathes through the pages of Conroy’s novels, particularly The Great Santini

After graduating from The Citadel, Conroy taught English in South Carolina and then accepted a job teaching children in a one-room schoolhouse on remote Daufuskie Island in South Carolina. After but a single year in this position, Conroy was fired due to his unconventional teaching practices, including his refusal to employ corporal punishment. Based on these experiences, Conroy wrote his book, The Water is Wide The book won him a humanitarian award from the National Education Association and was made into the film, Conrack , starring Jon Voight.

The Lords of Discipline, The Prince of T ides, Beach Music —these works capture the essence of the South as profoundly as few other novels have been able to do. Lyrical, honest, delicately structured, at times brutal, often redeeming, Conroy is the master when it comes to the challenges of portraying the dichotomies, complexity, and glory of the South.

And now we come to Ferrol Sams Born in rural Fayette County, Georgia, to Ferrol Aubrey Sams, Sr. and Mildred Matthews, Ferrol, Jr. (known to his family and close friends as "Sambo") attended Emory University School of Medicine for only one semester before joining the United States Army Medical Corps. Both Sams and his wife, Helen, practiced medicine in Fayette County until they retired in 2006.

Sams’ literary career began quietly, for he sought only to pen his memoirs, thus

preserving a time, place, and way of life for future generations. From this humble aspiration came books of such intricacy and insight that one is transported to a social, physical, and historic time that reveals much of what it is to be “southern.”

Sams has written eight books, including a remarkable trilogy of works featuring Porter Osborne, Jr., a character who is based upon the author himself. Run With The Horsemen, Sams’ first book was published in 1982, when Ferrol was 60 years of age. And in 1991, Sams was awarded the Townsend Prize for Fiction for his publication of When All the World was Young Erudite, evocative, dancing with believably eccentric characters, uplifting, moving, and exquisitely wrought, the works of Ferrol Sams well deserve a place upon the shelves of any southern literature connoisseur's library

Having indulged in these authors, one is ready to move on to the shattering beauty and power of “the masters.” Williams, Welty, O’Conner, Wolfe, and their brethren await you with words that evoke a deep, earthy, and hypnotic magic like rare black truffles. Once having tasted the richness of phrase and imagery, the brilliance of plot and voice, and the addictive allure of writers of such profound artistry, you will be altered, uplifted, and replete.

After your travels through the pages of these books you may be no closer to a definitive definition of southern literature. Perhaps to be a southern writer one must breathe of this rich air, walk among the legends, know what it is to touch the moon through Spanish moss, or to move to the rhythms of the tide. Perhaps it is a mercurial thing that will forever be shaped by the ancient forces that forge the footsteps of the Deep South—the flux of history, the tenacious hold on a way of being that imbues conversation and elicits creativity, the pride of heritage, and the abiding devotion to "the home place.” Perhaps, in the final analysis, it is a way of viewing the world that will forever defy restriction or classification for southern literature is, quite simply, the voice of the human heart.

yo’ Mama” And other important Southern ways To express Yourself

It is true that Southerners have a language of their own. Some expressions just don’t carry weight unless they are said with a southern accent. Here’s a collection for those from up north to practice on as they assimilate into the southern way of life.

“That possum’s on the stump!” (Translation: That’s as good as it gets!)

“His heart is a thumpin’ gizzard.” (Translation: He’s cold-hearted and cruel.)

When Southerners are upset:

He’s got a burr in his saddle. His knickers are in a knot. She’s pitching a hissy fit.

When Southerners don’t think much of somebody:

You’re lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut. Why, that egg-suckin’ dawg! Worthless as gum on a boot heel!

When Southerners are busy:

I’ve been running all over hell’s half acre.

I’m as busy as a one-legged cat in a sandbox.

Busier than a moth in a mitten!

About being broke or poor: He was so poor, he had a tumbleweed as a pet.

I’m so poor I couldn’t jump over a nickel to save a dime. Too poor to paint. Too proud to whitewash.

About Laziness:

He’s about as useful as a steering wheel on a mule. About as useful as rubber lips on a woodpecker.

He’s about as useless as a screen door on a submarine /a trapdoor on a canoe.

About Liars:

That dog won’t hunt. You’re lyin’ like a no-legged dog! You’d call an alligator a lizard.

About stupidity:

If that boy had an idea, it would die of loneliness. The porch light’s on, but no one’s home. If his brains were dynamite, he couldn’t blow his nose. I was born at night, but not last night! (I’m not that stupid!)

If you hear these southern expressions, you better watch out! Keep it up and I’ll cancel your birth certificate. I am going to jerk a knot in your tail.

I’ll knock you into the middle of next week.

Southern expressions for speed (fast or slow):

Faster than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking competition. Faster than a hot knife through butter.

Slower than a Sunday afternoon.

About being surprised:

Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit. Well, slap my head and call me silly!

And lastly:

“Bless your heart” is sort of an all-purpose expression. It can be used to mean anything from, “you sweet thing” to “you’re an idiot.”

It is just one of those sayings that you have to hear in context to understand what meaning is intended.

“Slap

Here in St. Marys, we are blessed with some of the most beautiful boating waters anywhere in the world. The nearby waterways abound with fish and wildlife galore and offer up magnificent vistas. While it’s great to take this all in from the shore or from one of our public docks, the absolute best way is by taking a boat tour. From this vantage point, it’s common to see a school of dolphins frolicking in the sound, an osprey devouring its morning meal atop a piling, and even a small herd of horses grazing at the edge of the marshes on Cumberland Island. The view of Fort Clinch from the mouth of the St. Marys River takes you back to a time when it guarded the entrance to Fernandina and St. Marys harbours. You can almost feel the fear it struck in enemy sailors aboard wooden ships.

Spending a few hours with Captain Keegan Federal aboard the Mary Virginia is an experience few could imagine. Keegan is an accomplished attorney, Superior Court judge, airplane pilot, Vietnam veteran, and, of course, a licensed boat captain. His local knowledge of the coastal waters from South Carolina through Georgia to northern Florida and beyond is impressive. His wife, Rebecca, is often aboard and uses her culinary skills to serve guests gourmet hors d’oeurves and delicious meals. Keegan and Rebecca also own the historic Federal Quarters, the oldest private home in downtown St. Marys and the home where Aaron Burr escaped to after he shot Alexander Hamilton. (Burr went to the same law school as the home’s original owner—Archibald Clark.) The Federals operate the residence as a short-term vacation rental, and many of their boat charter guests often start out as overnight guests at the Federal Quarters.

The Mary Virginia (named for Keegan’s beloved mother) is in a class by itself. The Grand Banks is widely revered as one of the most classic private yachts ever continued

It’s an incredible experience to spend a few hours with Captain Keegan as he regales you with tales from a life well lived. Celebrities, statesmen, and acclaimed names that you would recognize have had the privilege of experiencing an outing on the Mary Virginia. While enjoying our beautiful downtown keep an eye out for these bronze owls designed by local artist Walter Palmer. Inspired by the history of Downtown St. Marys, the Owls are a result of a public art program collaboration between St. Marys Mainstreet and Rustapalooza.

St. Marys is a place where history walks around each corner and city block. I watch from above, near the dearly departed, right where you finish just as you started.

Seven seats and many doors. The people's place and so much more. It's the heart and it's a hall. Tomorrow is shaped by us all.

You hear a lot about clambakes and “clamming” relating to the New England states, but not many people know that Coastal Georgia boasts a rich resource of these delectable shellfish.

In the waters of Sapelo Sound a little over an hour north of St. Marys, Charlie Phillips runs a thriving clam farm that produces millions of clams yearly. Founded in 1997, Charlie’s operation is the oldest clam farm in Georgia and one of the most prolific clam resources in the Southeast.

Clam farming is a relatively new practice, with the first large-scale commercial operations being established in the early 21st century.

Charlie said that Sapelo Sea Farms’ genesis of clam farming came about when the shrimping started getting scarce. The University of Georgia helped him get into continued

the business. He continues to work with UGA along with the Department of Natural Resources on other shellfish aquaculture species.

As a teenager, he worked his daddy’s shrimp boats and then began captaining the boats while in college.

“The Georgia Coastal waters are ideal for raising clams,” he said. “We have some of the largest tides on the East Coast, averaging seven feet, which helps filter and clean the water resulting in sweet, succulent clams.”

Georgia’s Coastal Resources Division routinely monitors water quality conditions along the coast to ensure that waters meet classifications for harvest as prescribed in the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP). Guidelines of the NSSP ensure that waters are routinely tested and classified to prohibit the taking of shellfish for human food purposes from any areas not classified as “approved” and to deal with emergency closures related to extreme weather events.

Charlie said that the only time his clamming business has been affected by water conditions was during and after a hurricane or tropical storm.

Charlie explained how the clamming process goes: “Clam farming starts out at a hatchery that specializes in the spawning and care of young shellfish through the fragile larval phases,” he said.

When Charlie purchases the seeds from the hatchery, continued ...

they are anywhere from four millimeters to the size of a butterbean.

What happens next is fascinating.

Charlie and his crew plant the clam seeds in mesh bags, laying them in beds (mud flats) adjacent to Sapelo Island. They grow for about two years before his team harvests them. Only about 45% of his original investment seeds come to fruition for selling.

A lot of creatures—besides humans—love them some clams, according to Charlie. Various fish, conchs, stingrays, horseshoe crabs, stone crabs, and moon snails are just a few of the predators that feast on the clams during their growth period.

It’s a marvel to watch the Sapelo Sea Farms team plant the maturing clam seeds.

Recently, this author witnessed the process.

From the time the crew hops off the airboat carrying the seed bags to the time they hop back on is only about ten minutes—ten minutes to plant 173,000 clams on this given day. And that’s a lot of clams.

“We plant four to five days a week,” Charlie said. “And we harvest almost every day—usually about 2,000 clams a day.”

seaboard, and into Canada. Some of New York’s most prestigious restaurants are serving clams grown right here in our own backyard.

“You’ve got your little necks, your middle necks, and your top necks,” Charlie spouts in a style reminiscent of Bubba Gump’s famous shrimp quote.

Charlie’s been in the seafood business for more than 40 years now—shrimping, running a dock, growing shellfish, running snapper boats—it’s in his blood. And he sees a bright future not only in clamming, but also for oyster farming which he is working through the process of getting established.

“You’ve got to be flexible in this business,” he said. “Things change every day and you’ve got to turn on a dime.”

He’s concerned about environmental issues that could affect his oyster and clam productions.

“We’re getting higher tides. Fish are moving north. There is extra co2 in the atmosphere and policymakers need to start mitigating or making plans to reverse the effects.”

But for now, Charlie and his team are happy as clams (or at least happy as clams in high tide). There’s good honest work for his 20 plus employees. There’s bounty to be harvested. And there’s good food waiting at his restaurant which bring us to the next subject…

The Fish Dock Bar and Grill on the Sapelo River

Charlie Phillips’ restaurant is part of his compound on the river that includes his dock where shrimpboats and Charlie’s snapper boats make their home and where his clam farming business thrives.

When you first enter The Fish Dock, you get a sense that you’ve been here before—especially if you’re a lover of the Low Country. Reminders that you’re on the river and around the bend from the ocean are in every corner. It’s hard to make your way to the dining area cause you just want to sit down at the bar and take in all the local color. to your own table overlooking the beautiful Sapelo River. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

Fresh seafood doesn’t get any fresher than this. You may be chowing down on some clams that were in the sound just hours before.

People love the Sapelo Bacon Clams (garlic, bacon, tomatoes and flavor galore) and the less adorned clam entrée that is bursting with flavor as well. You will want to start your meal with the Captain’s Crab Bowl—a stew loaded with their famous blue crab. My Shrimp and Oyster platter was to die for, and next time I’ll order the Shrimp and Grits. (Wouldn’t Bubba Gump be proud?) There’s Seafood Linguini for the pasta lovers and Surf and Turf that features a ribeye and wild Georgia shrimp. The menu is plentiful. The atmosphere is relaxing. And the service is terrific.

Some people might remember the restaurant as “Pelican Point” which it was before Charlie acquired the business in 2015. There’s a story there as well.

In the 40s, not satisfied with the small creek that bordered the place, the owner was reputed to have used dynamite to enlarge the creek. The result, Rosco’s cut, now a canal, serves as the home to Phillips Seafood, Sapelo Sea Farms, and several other docks providing fresh seafood for the tables of The Fish Dock.

Diners come from Jacksonville and Savannah and points beyond just to experience The Fish Dock and indulge in fresh local seafood. Charlie’s goal to serve the best and highest quality fresh seafood right from his own docks is achieved every day as Charlie hand picks snapper, grouper, and sea bass from his own boats as well as daily-harvested clams from his clam farm.

There’s much history inside the walls of The Fish Dock, and Charlie and his team continue to perpetuate the legacy of great food, great atmosphere, and good times—his salute to his beloved Low Country.

The Fish Dock Bar and Grill and Sapelo Sea Farms are located on the Sapelo River at 1398 Sapelo Avenue NE in McIntosh County, Georgia.

where the tribes of the Timucuan once feasted on wild turkey and oysters and turtle eggs. Where great men of industry came to play and live and die.

And where mansions rise, giving testament to a time well-lived on this island of Wonder—Cumberland Island.

The Wonder of Cumberland Island begins with nature and segues into the majestic architecture of the Island’s two mansions: one in ruins but worthy of a visit—Dungeness, and one beautifully preserved— Plum Orchard.

Seven miles up the road from Sea Camp where the Cumberland Island Ferry makes its second stop sits this exquisite mansion built in 1898 as a wedding gift from Lucy Carnegie to her son, George Lauder Carnegie. The mansion offers a glimpse into the Edwardian Times that were often referred to as the golden age when the life of the rich revolved around social parties and banquets. Those who attended these parties were elaborately dressed men and women with high society manners and a polished outlook towards life. And Plum Orchard was the site of many of these coveted gatherings. The house served as the couple’s primary winter residence until George’s passing in 1921.

Totaling 24 thousand square feet, the mansion features 12 fireplaces and 6 bedrooms. With a gun room, library, indoor pool, and a plethora of ensuites, Plum

Orchard is extravagant even by today’s standards. Park officials have put in a lot of time and effort into the well-being of the mansion. From upkeep to refurnishing, all the hard work has paid off. The mansion is in impeccable condition although most of the authentic furniture could not be salvaged. The front lawn of the mansion is the lunch spot for many visitors who can eat their lunches with the horses—surrounded by great live oaks next to the river. Sometimes the grazers are graced with beautiful piano music drifting out of the open windows of the mansion. Plum Orchard offers an incredible opportunity to get a taste of how everyday Cumberland Island life would have been for the Carnegies.

Visitors can take a free tour of the 22,000 square foot mansion. On display are the architecture, furnishings, and machinery that made operation of the house possible. Plum Orchard offers a glimpse into Edwardian High Society at the turn of the 20th century and the importance of recreation, indulgence, and rejuvenation in nature. But further exploration tells the story of a family who valued the island, and their time spent with friends and family there.

This mansion was donated to the National Park Foundation by the Carnegie family in 1971. The contribution of Plum Orchard helped achieve continued ...

congressional approval for establishing Cumberland Island National Seashore. Tours to the Plum Orchard Mansion are conducted daily as part of the Lands and Legacies Tours.

The best way to see Plum Orchard is by taking the Lands and Legacies Tours that leave from Sea Camp after the arrival of the 9:00 AM ferry. The tour lasts all day. There is an additional charge for the tour and current rates can be found on the park’s web site. Campers may also hike or bike up to Plum Orchard.

Founder of Womens Food Alliance Trailblazes into Georgia

With the recent launch of Womens Food Alliance Coastal Georgia, Leigh Cort brings full circle a hospitality career that began in NYC’s Trump Tower in 1983. This is how it started.

Film producer and restaurateur Dino deLaurentis thought Leigh could handle the “party director” position at his new restaurant DDL BISTRO. It was nestled inside the iconic Fifth Avenue building at the base of the Trump Tower waterfall. At the time, she really didn’t know how to create a huge gala for thousands of guests. But when you meet Leigh, you will understand that this  simple fact did not stop her.

Leigh’s first party hosted 1,500 guests honoring famed sculptor Erté—the Russian born French artist celebrating his 90th birthday. Imagine coat racks for 1,500 furs and overcoats with 50 people to organize the arrival of guests. Leigh directed a staff of 200, executing every detail to make this “talk-of-the-town” event a raving success.

And she hasn’t stopped since.

Forty years later, Leigh has rightfully earned her place in the hospitality industry having created Womens Food Alliance (WFA) in northeast Florida ten years ago. WFA is an expansive hospitality organization with members in food and event-related businesses that include hoteliers, chefs, farmers, event continued ...

planners, cookbook authors, entertainment and food service, culinary leaders, vintners, venue owners, and media. Its mission is to “cultivate and advance education, collaboration, and networking for women in all fields of the hospitality industry.” Now, more than 150 members enjoy the benefits of a sisterhood designed to foster success for every member. And, thankfully, Leigh had the vision to expand her Florida roots to Georgia.

Recently, Leigh hosted an impressive Golden Pineapple Gala Awards event at the World Golf Hall of Fame, celebrating WFA’s 10th year anniversary and honoring 20 special women who have “blazed trails and created food trends, mentored up-and-comers, and followed their dreams of success.”

The formation of Womens Food Alliance Coastal Georgia was announced at the event with introductions of Georgia’s founding Leadership Council including Donna McPherson, owner of Golden Isles Olive Oil Culinary Center (St. Simons Island), Rebekah Faulk Lingenfelser (author of “Some Kinda Good” (Savannah), and Barbara Ryan (publisher of “St. Marys Magazine”).

Leigh continues to be the “event-planner extraordinaire” orchestrating dinners and lunches that showcase members’ venues, special events, food and spirit tastings, culinary focus groups, introduction of new food products, food competitions, and hospitality expos.

“The Hospitality/Food Industry throughout Florida and Georgia continues to explode with talent, creativity, and passion,” Leigh said. “The knowledge, hard work, respect, and fellowship that we share leads us to believe that more women in the industry could benefit from and contribute to the Womens Food Alliance.”

She said, “Each WFA member offers something unique, and it’s an exciting journey to see and understand what their pride and joy is offering.”

Rarely, does someone come into your life that writes their name upon your heart from day one. For me, L. J. Williams was that rarity.

A lover of all humankind, L. J. was a friend to all.

In his earlier days as a store owner in downtown St. Marys, he often helped those in need get through the week with food to feed their families.

As a St. Marys City Councilman, he served his community with passion and compassion.

As a Sergeant Major in the Army, he served his nation with honor and valor.

L. J. held a firm belief that America was the greatest country on Earth. No one loved his country more than L. J. Williams.

He and I always teared up together when honoring our flag on the St. Marys Express and every time we heard “Proud to be an American” played over the speakers on the train. For many years. L. J. entertained thousands of delighted riders on the St. Marys Express.

L. J.’s big love (after his family) was St. Marys Little Theatre for which he was a founding board member and served as Vice Chair. For more than a decade, he steered this theatre group through numerous sold-out performances, many of which he participated in as a much-applauded actor.

Nothing made L. J. happier than making people laugh. He was an entertainer extraordinaire and could elicit a hearty laugh with just one of his “light-up-the-room” grins.

Guess God needed someone with L. J.’s talents more than He thought we needed him because L. J. left this world way sooner than we were willing to let him go.

When you look up into the evening skies and see the heavenly cast of sparkling stars, look for the brightest one. That’s our L. J.—looking down, smiling, laughing, and saying “Every little thing’s gonna be all right.”

Jeremy and Cristen Nascimento launched their Yankee Pie Apizza business in downtown St. Marys as an expression of their love for our community and their desire to bring an exceptional dining experience to visitors and residents in St. Marys’ Historic District. They projected they would sell 100 pizzas on opening day from their food truck set up in front of their soon-to-be permanent building. Surprise! More than 400 pizzas were served on that day with customers lined up around the block and waiting as long as four and a half hours. According to those who came that day, and those who continue to make Yankee Pie Apizza one of Coastal Georgia’s favorite restaurants, it was well worth the wait.

Locals had been craving downtown pizza for years, so a hearty reception was not surprising. But quadrupling one’s expectations is a rarity. And business has not slowed down. Here’s how it all started.

plying their wares from their pushcarts to the factory workers nearly 100 years ago. New Haven was a landing spot for many Italian families who settled in the United States and Little Italy became the place to go to find the beloved “apizza” of their homeland. It was here that Jeremy discovered why a world famous pizza reviewer called New Haven “The Pizza Capital of the World” and its pizzas the best in the world. And it was in New Haven where he learned the art of making this nectar of the pizza gods.

Thankfully, Jeremy brought the art and his passion for pizza southward to open the first authentic pizzeria in downtown St. Marys.

“We proof our dough for 24 hours to get that incredible flavor in the crust,” said Jeremy. “Our ovens heat up to 1000 degrees which gives it that crispy char taste that you can find only in New Haven.”

Jeremy said his pizza makers (pizzaiolos) are trained to run the pizzas and move them around to make sure every pizza is cooked to perfection.

Some favorites include the Margarita, the Potato and Rosemary, Italian Bomb, Original Clam Apizza, and for families, the Jeremy Childhood Special that has tons of meat all over with veggies for the parents on one half of the pie.

“When I was growing up, Friday was family night,” said Jeremy. “That’s what inspired my Jeremy Childhood Special.”

Many ingredients come directly from Italy. “We use the finest imported Italian ingredients we can find,” he said. Jeremy has also made alliances with quite a few local vendors to create a true “farm to table” experience. Connecting to a local blueberry farm enabled him to create a dessert apizza—Blueberry Compote.

Whether you’re enjoying your apizza outside at a picnic table or inside New York style with a view of the pizzaiolos in action, the unique charred crust and fresh ingredients are your reward for a hard day’s work or play.

Fun is always on the menu at Yankee Pie Apizza. Recent activities included movies on the lawn, laser tag, and nine-hole miniature golf. Free s’more kits are provided for the kids to enjoy by the fire pit. You can always pick up a game of corn hole or just amuse yourself with the beauty of St. Marys’ waterfront just steps away.

Filmmaking continues to thrive in St. Marys and Coastal Georgia with a recent premiere of Success Camp starring former Superman Dean Cain and an upcoming film series produced by Studio 425 Productions for Dads 4 Life.

Dads 4 Life is a 501 (c) 3 organization dedicated to “enhancing, enriching and encouraging Dads to invest in their greatest asset on Earth...their children.” Keith Jowers, founder of Dads 4 Life, believes that “If you go through life only helping yourself, you go through life alone.” That thought remains the anchor of what the organization continues to accomplish.

Celebrating their 20th year in 2024, Dads 4 Life has entered into a new way to support parents, especially dads by creating Studio 425 Productions to focus on helping families through film production.

St. Marys will play host to Dads 4 Life’s first big project, a film series called “Crossroads” that deals with the many decisions parents face in life and the effects of their decisions. Many of the series episodes are based on true stories. Having had a great experience with his involvement in the locally-filmed Success Camp project, Jowers plans to film several episodes in St. Marys and will be tapping locals to participate in the filming. Camden County Film Commissioner Doug Vaught is working to secure locations and is reaching out to residents to see who might have a nice porch with porch swing for one location shot. (contact info at CoastalGeorgiaFilm.org).

Jowers understands the value of a community that roles out the red carpet for filmmakers and a city whose leadership appreciates the economic contributions that filmmaking can make to a community.

Stephen King Story To Be Reprised In St. Marys

For the second time, local filmmaker Brandon Herron is producing a film based on a Stephen King short story. It’s all part of Stephen King’s “”Dollar Babies” program whereby King offers aspiring filmmakers a chance to make a non-commercial movie based on one of his short stories and only charges one dollar for that privilege. Herron has chosen The Man Who Loved Flowers for his Dollar Baby project. He has to transpose the short story into a script suitable for the big screen, of course, and envisions the resulting film being featured in film festivals around the country.

Having made films in St. Marys several times before, Herron is grateful for all the resources the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance offers filmmakers and St. Marys’ film-friendly city leadership. He plans to film The Man Who Loved Flowers in St. Marys and through the Film Alliance will be asking locals to participate as actors.

Rising Star On The Way To Discovery

Eleven-year-old Collin Galvin is no stranger to the big screen or the stage. He’s been performing with the St. Marys Little Theatre at Theater by the Trax for several years and his on-screen acting career has picked up steam in the last few months.

Collin’s film portfolio would be envied even by a seasoned performer and includes Disney films and appearances with A- list actors. He appeared along with Scarlett Johannson, Ray Romano, and Channing Tatum in Project Artemis; in May to December with Julianna Moore and Natalie Portman; in a kids fantasy series teaser by the creator of Barney & Friends, as well as in the aforementioned Success Camp. Collin’s television portfolio includes Clean Slate, directed by Norman Lear.

With more than $4.4 billion having been spent in the state of Georgia in 2022 alone (a record-breaking year according to Governor Brian Kemp), clearly filmmaking is going strong and Coastal Georgia continues to court location managers, producers, and other powers-that-be to make sure the region is “top of mind” for the film industry long into the future.

To Inspire, nurture, amaze, and educate—that has been the driving force of St. Marys Little Theatre’s (SMLT) mission of “Enriching lives through performing Arts” for nearly years.

When the lights go down and a metaphorical curtain rises on the stage at Theatre by the Trax where SMLT makes its home, there is an anticipation of magic in the air.

The St. Marys Little Theatre (SMLT) performing troupe made its debut in fall 2011 with the ambitious “Man of La Mancha.” A Navy chaplain, a retired colonel, a fireman, and a city mayor were among the 35 individuals that comprised the cast and crew of the premier production. Five shows. Five sellouts. Five standing ovations. Live theatre had returned in full to downtown St. Marys, Georgia.

And now, 13 seasons later, SMLT continues to bring the community together—writers, actors, costume designers, lighting pros, stage techs, prop managers, set designers, carpenters, electricians, musicians, vocalists, artists, and supporters—all for the good cause of entertainment and learning through the cultural arts.

“It is something of a feat to put on a theatre production,” said SMLT Founder and Chair Barbara Ryan-Harris. “Much like film, it requires writers, actors, directors, etc., and the chemistry that’s produced by the fusion of these elements. But unlike film, it’s all live—no editing, no retakes, no room for error.”

She continued, “The subtle tension produced by the shared knowledge, on all sides of the stage, that at any moment one or more elements could fail—while simultaneously suspending disbelief so that what is happening on stage appears ‘real’—puts a charge in the air, something visceral and intangible yet permanent in its effect.”

This, Ryan-Harris says, is the magic of theatre.

SMLT’s most recent productions included the annual “Evening with the Stars” and “Savannah Sipping Society” held their own magic.

Houston, Kenny Chesney and 26 other acts, “Evening with the Stars” was met with resounding applause and kudos galore.

“People thought the performers were lip-syncing— that’s how good they were,” Ryan-Harris said. “But Coastal Georgia has some awesome talent and we love showcasing it. One audience member remarked that if ‘America’s Got Talent’ held their auditions in St. Marys, they could fill up their entire season.’”

Ryan-Harris said her biggest rewards come from witnessing transformations that take people from where they were hoping they could go to far beyond where they ever thought they would go.

“We especially love seeing families and young people participate in our theatre group,” she said. “Evening with the Stars, with a cast and crew of 50, was filled with familial groups that included children, parents, grandparents, and cousins. Their involvement gave them an opportunity to spend quality time with each other several times a week.”

“We’ve seen these amazing transformations that happen when young people are exposed to theatre, and the impact on these young lives has been both inspiring and daunting because we know there is so much possibility but limited resources to fulfill those possibilities.”

SMLT is enjoying more and more the effects of cultural tourism. Recently, audiences were made up of more than 50% of people from out of town.

“The potential for cultural heritage tourism is vast,” said Ryan-Harris. “This contributes to the vibrancy of our economy when people come and eat in our restaurants, shop in our stores, and stay in our hotels and bed and breakfasts.”

SMLT’S 2023 production of “Savannah Sipping Society” brought in groups of women who made it a weekend girls getaway.

The hilarity of four aging southern belles sharing their angsts, their triumphs, and their sovereignty made for great entertainment as evidenced by the audiences’ response.

“We are growing into a vibrant and stalwart theatre community,” Ryan-Harris said. “And our pledge is to continue to serve up delicious and soul-nourishing performances—some time-tested classics, family-friendly musical theatre, lots of humor, and a salting of dance from time to time.”

writers, and tech crew of St. Marys Little Theatre invite the public to “drink up” and enjoy the upcoming productions, and to get involved.

“The smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd can be addictive,” Ryan-Harris warns. “It is that passion that lives within us all to bring joy to others that really makes up the magic of the theatre.”

Who remembers the Kress Five & Dime Stores that operated across America up to 1981?

From 1896, generations “came to town” to shop in their local Kress store for ordinary necessities. These iconic stores remain an important part of retail history and, thankfully, those who revere history have repurposed these important structures into significant businesses that play an important role in the success of a downtown. Brunswick, Georgia, is no exception.

In 1958, S. H. Kress Company purchased the former First National Bank Building in Downtown Brunswick to expand their adjacent Five and Dime. Ultimately both structures were demolished and replaced by a single modern two-story building that pays homage to the two monuments of its past.

Tommy McGraw, a native of Glynn County, had a vision to contribute to Downtown Brunswick’s major renovation. Set at 1505 Newcastle Street in the very heart of Brunswick’s revitalized downtown, the brand new Kress Hotel is an extraordinary testament to how well yesterday and tomorrow can meld into a work of art and beauty.

elegant architecture of a bygone era. (Samuel H. Kress would be proud.)

The Kress Suites are decorated with intricate, historical elements and vintage accents that create an inviting atmosphere. With large windows throughout and balconies, guests can experience the illumination from the natural light and the golden hour views.

Each suite is unique and reflects the character of a well-loved private home. With features like exposed brick, vaulted skylights, luxurious rugs, gleaming hardwood floors, and gourmet kitchens, staying in a Kress Suite is luxury personified. And the congenial professional staff makes sure every guest feels like the VIP he or she really is.

For superb dining, one only has to take the elevator to the rooftop restaurant –1509. Sweeping views await you adding to the ambience of a supreme dining experience. Succulent seafood, sublime steaks, savory small plates all add up to a culinary sojourn of the highest order. An impressive wine list, handcrafted cocktails, beers, and ciders from around the world complete your dining joy.
