I’ve been thinking a lot about bravery lately. And what exactly it means to be brave. Maybe I’m at that age in life where introspection is often the order of the day.

Or maybe I’ve just come to the realization that I admire—and yes, covet—bravery.

Bravery has been defined as “courageous behavior or character.” It is a behavioral trait that allows us to overcome our inhibitions, our inner fears and gives us the strength to do what we feel is right. Bravery is a quality of spirit that enables us to face danger or pain without showing fear, but it doesn’t mean the absence of fear.

Rosa Parks was brave. Oskar Schindler was brave. The little boy who raised his hand in class to give an answer he was unsure of was brave.

Game of Thrones fans may recall this quote by George R. R. Martin: “Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid? That is the only time a man can be brave, his father told him.”

Nelson Mandela said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

It seems that when you start to make bold decisions in life, you see yourself and your circumstances change. You have to believe that there is always something good coming at the end of all your hard work, even if it is just new life lessons, friendships, or creative ideas.

Yes, it takes bravery to make bold decisions—bravery which imbues in us a sense of self-belief that can make us scale mountains and do things we never believed we could.

But, at my age, do I really want to scale mountains?

YES! YES I DO! Don’t you?

Well, maybe starting with a small hill or two.

I do believe that we can correlate success with the amount of courage we put into our efforts. I figure I’ll keep the faith and my fears will just starve to death.

What I know for sure, though, is NO GUTS, NO GLORY.

urricane Irma. Those who felt her wrath will not soon forget the experience. She was born on August 30, 2017 near the Cape Verde Islands and quickly gained muscle; within a mere 24 hour period, she became a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson scale. Then Category 3…then 4…then a cataclysmic Cat 5 until, on September 6, she reached her peak intensity with 185 mph (295 km/h) winds. Irma dropped back to a still-considerable Cat 3 by the time she made a second Florida landfall on Marco Island.

And then she set her sights on the small historic city of St. Marys, Georgia.

Even before Irma slammed into our sweet coastal town, local landscapers and tradesmen were offering their time and energies to help others board up their homes and lay in supplies. As is always the case in St. Marys, in times of need we are all Family.

Throughout Sunday, September 10, and Monday

the 11th, Irma pummeled the waterfront and sent her powerful punch for miles inland. Many of the cherished and iconic live oaks groaned beneath the onslaught, tore their roots from the earth, and fell in exhaustion. Docks and marinas were obliterated—chunks of cement thrown onto the banks of the St. Marys River like a child’s jacks—while boats of all sizes were driven into the marsh or swallowed by the waves and surges that caused the river to crest miles upstream at an astonishing height of 17ft.

When the rain softened, the winds calmed, and Irma released a last sigh, St. Marys was battered, bruised, and reeling with uncertainty. The economic lifeblood of the downtown area is generated by the 60,000+ annual visitors to Cumberland Island National Seashore but the ferry dock had been destroyed. As the extent of the damage was revealed, the citizens grieved for a moment…and then began again. As always. www.StMarysMagazine.com

In a world that is so often torn by divisiveness and alienation, the coming together of a community is a glorious sight. As the flood waters subsided, neighbors began to check on one another. The roar of chainsaws filled the air and social media was blanketed with messages such as “Have truck and strong back. If you need help, call….” And “All Welcome for Meals available at...” and “My family is ready to help your family. St. Marys strong.”

As always, the churches swung into action, tirelessly conjuring up endless meals for those without power and collecting donated provisions for people whose homes had been damaged.

The skies had barely cleared before people descended upon the waterfront to survey the damage, share heartache and hope, and then roll up their sleeves to begin the enormous clean-up.

like minuscule tear-drops and massive boulders of snow, presenting a Sisyphean task. In an effort to rally the town’s spirits, Riverview Hotel owner (and former Mayor) Jerry Brandon summoned a few friends and built a 7-foot Styrofoam snowman, wearing a jaunty scarf and an irrepressible grin.

In the days that followed, it seemed that everyone had a tale of unsurpassed generosity and kindness to share.

Patty Martin: “We had four trees fall and block our cul-de-sac during Irma. Shortly after the storm we emerged and started surveying damage. I went to my mom’s house, on foot as the road was blocked, and on my way there a young man in a four-wheeler Jeep stopped and asked if I knew of anybody who needed help. He had a winch on his Jeep and chainsaws as well as other things to help with debris removal. I told him about our street and away he went! When I got continued ...

back to my street there he was just sawing away to clear a path for a vehicle. It was fabulous!”

Edward Torgersen: ”The Lutheran minister whose church loaned us and others generators to power refrigerators and told us to return when we no longer need them. The people of Bishop Circle who formed a yard clean up task force, cleaning debris from our and other yards. The Harvest Church of Kingsland people who came by with a hot meal and returned next day with lunch.”

The tales of unassuming heroism are too many to share here; too many for the heart to hold without overflowing. Even as the townspeople gathered to lend one another strength, social media abounded with stories of anonymous others who provided strong backs, equipment, food, shelter, and comfort.

Meanwhile, those citizens who left the City when the mandatory evacuation order was announced were frantic for word of their homes and friends— and again, people rose to the occasion by inspecting houses, checking up on one another, reporting to the “outside world,” and easing the burden of fear.

With astonishing speed and determination, a group of citizens organized an “Irma Recovery Assistance Hotline” with a dedicated phone number, website, and Facebook page so that volunteers could be continued ...

matched up with those in need of help. It is telling that the City was being inundated with calls from individuals wanting to know what they could do to assist those in need. In the words of Mayor John Morrissey, “If it were not for those of you who responded to the call via the temporary ‘St. Marys Irma Recovery Assistance Hotline’ or email, hundreds of people needing assistance simply would not have been helped. More than 750 volunteer hours were contributed in the days following the storm, demonstrating once again the great spirit of neighbor helping neighbor in our community.”

And those 750 hours were just the ones that were logged through the Hotline service while thousands of other undocumented acts of generosity and kindness were unfolding each day.

St. Marys’ elected leaders and administration burned up the email and phone lines and, in short order, gathered the considerable might of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Coast Guard, the Georgia Department of Natural

Resources, The National Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, and the National Park Service. Thirty-nine boats were dredged from the river and marsh and trucked to the local airport (to recline on the runway until being claimed) and within a mere two months, the Cumberland Island ferry was once again plying the waters between St. Marys and the National Seashore.

As of the writing of this article, massive cranes and yellow-tape barriers still adorned the waterfront, construction and repairs continue, and the challenges are (though lessening) considerable. But our legendary charm is intact, our natural beauty is stunning, our history is even more fascinating than before, and our renowned “southern hospitality” is as captivating as always. Bit by bit, project by project, and heart by heart, we’re shaking off the impacts of Hurricane Irma and building again; strengthened and invigorated by a newfound awareness of the extraordinary grit, compassion, energy, and kindness of our beloved St. Marys.

don’t like to brag, but truth is I have a story to tell and now that I have your attention, I’m eager to tell it.

Hurricanes are no big deal to me. Maybe because I always have so much company during these big storms. Or maybe because I know a thing or two about damage and hurt and broken bones. But I’m getting ahead of myself. More about that later.

You see, I’m a foster brother to lots of doggies when hurricane season rolls in. My human mommy takes in those that—well, let’s say, just aren’t the first pick for other volunteer foster families. For example, for Hurricane Irma, we had Grammie and Dolly (by the way, they are frequent flyers at my house). They’re both pretty old and are considered “shelter” dogs.

That means, their home for the rest of their lives will probably be the “shelter.” But not to feel too sorry for them, because their shelter family has adopted them so they don’t have to stay in a cage all day, and they have each other.

Now, Dolly doesn’t like for Grammie to be out continued ...

of her sight. It’s just amazing, probably, for you human beings to understand the connection that we in the canine world have to each other. We do have twice as many legs as you do. And maybe we have twice the heart as well. But my point is, WE HAVE FEELINGS. BIG FEELINGS. But back to the story.

So there’s Dolly and Grammie and a cutie but oldie named Daisy, and this big ole boxer guy named Romeo who had a broken leg. Boy was he big! To add to his sad story (cause you know when we end up in the shelter, we most likely come with a sad story), while he was with us, Mommy had to take him for a scheduled appointment at the vet’s to have his manhood diminished. Now, if you’re not getting my euphemism here— HE WAS NEUTERED! Ouch, I remember those days, but again, I digress.

Also, we had my mommy’s mommy’s doggies too—Margo and Pogo,- (both rescues).

that I have my own pack—big sister Nellie and big brother Oliver. But still with all that crew, there weren’t nearly as many doggies in my house as there were when Hurricane Matthew came along. We had TWO sets of puppies then.

Can you imagine! Feedings every hour and all that goes with having young ‘uns in the house.

But Hurricane Irma wasn’t so bad. As a matter of fact, I will confess. I really love having all that chaos around.

After all, I’ve been called the “bestest foster brother” in Camden County. Not sure if that’s sincere, or just buttering me up so I’ll be accepting when the next storm hits and the next bunch of animals invade my domain.

Oh, did I say “invade”?

Didn’t mean it. Really. I do look forward to having foster brothers and sisters a couple of times each year. Gives me a chance to tell them my story. And reminds me of how fortunate I am to have a loving home after a not-so-fortunate situation in my early years. continued ...

I know you find this hard to believe, but there are actually human beings out there who aren’t so nice to their pets. There are human beings out there who may actually kick their pets. That’s how I ended up with broken bones before I came to the shelter. Now, don’t go feeling too sorry for me, but I have to tell you I was a real mess. But there was this person at the shelter who took a hankering to me. Well, truth be told, I took a hankering to her. No matter how bad I hurt—and yes, there were some pretty painful days, I always found the strength to wag my tail when she came around. Well, one thing led to another, and first thing you know, she had fostered me.

Now, I’m what you call a “foster failure.” You know what that means? That’s when a mutt like myself goes home with a human being on a temporary basis. Sometimes, the mutt and the human being fall in love with each other, and the foster home becomes a forever home. And let me tell you, the goal of every mutt at the shelter (and I use that term loosely cause there are a lot of “pure breeds” there as well)—but every one of us dream day in and day out of our forever home. Foster failures are a wondrous thing. Why, after Hurricane Irma, there were 28 foster failures that came from the Camden Humane Society shelter. How cool is that!

I know they call it “rescues” when a person gives a forever home to an animal. But you know what? When a

human rescues a doggy or a kitty, sometimes the fur baby rescues them right back. Just ask my mommy.

Again, not to brag, but I guess I’ve earned my title of “best foster brother.” And I’m proud of it. So, let me ask you something on behalf of all my canine and feline friends who spend their days in the shelter dreaming of their forever home.

Won’t you give us a chance? You don’t have to commit right away. Just tell the Humane Society you’re willing to “foster” one of us. You don’t need to wait until the next hurricane either. There are dozens of really special animals just waiting for someone like you to give them a chance. Who knows, maybe, just maybe, you’ll fall in love and join that elite group of “foster failures.”

Remember, love is the greatest gift of all. Please give some today.

f you’ve ever taken a slow aerial ride over the St. Marys area, no doubt you’ve been awed by the abundance of waterscapes that surround St. Marys—three rivers, the Intracoastal Waterway, tributaries galore, and of course, the great Atlantic Ocean just around the bend.

Thankfully, the Camden County Joint Development Authority (JDA) in partnership with the City of St. Marys understands and appreciates the value of being “water-blessed.”

Plans are now on the drawing board for the St. Marys Marine Center to be built on the 50 acres of North River property for which the JDA has a purchase agreement—the most prime acreage of the 700 plus acres that comprised the old paper mill site.

The vision for the St. Marys Marine Center’s waterfront site is one that builds on the tradition that gives St. Marys her charm while lending a cosmopolitan component to the downtown area.

parcel. Boat owners prefer a more protected environment for their boats rather than the exposure to the swift currents of the river.

The vision of the St. Marys Marine Center also includes a boat haul-out and repair facility, dry stack storage, waterfront restaurant, marine related retail, a recreational boat club and condo/residential units.

Imagine, if you will, making a quick phone call then showing up at the marina where your boat will be waiting dockside, all fueled up with supplies like ice aboard.

Easy in. Easy out. That’s the premise behind the dry stack storage.

As for boats docking at the marina, owners can expect a variety of services that include fuel, dining, shopping and even entertainment. After all, Theatre by the Trax with its award-winning shows presented by St. Marys Little Theatre is just a short stroll away. A planned boardwalk will give residents and boat owners a visual feast as they stroll along the waterfront, enjoying the wildlife that is plentiful on the property—snowy egrets, blue heron, 16

manatees, dolphins and more dot the land and waterscapes.

Staying attuned to the “village-like” setting of Historic St. Marys, the developer intends for residential and retail spaces to be designed as a complement to the current surroundings, staying low-rise with generous water vistas and park-like settings.

And who is the developer?

The JDA has chosen as master developer FIRMUS, LLC led by Bruce Benton who has more than 30 years’ experience in developing similar projects, mostly on the Gulf Coast. A look at some of Benton’s projects including The Wharf Marina at Orange Beach, Alabama, indicates a track record of successes.

“We are focused on maximizing the site to complement what is already there,” said JDA Executive Director James Coughlin. “The St. Marys Marine Center is destined to be an economic catalyst for St. Marys economic development.”

developed Marine Center to include increased visitors which mean more tourism dollars, more jobs, and the removal of blight which exists now on the site.

Though developing a marina can be a complicated and long drawn out process for approvals, the developer may be able to capitalize on a marina approval that was already secured by previous land owner Landmar.

The process of St. Marys Marine Center becoming a reality is escalating.

Recently, the St. Marys City Council approved the creation of St. Marys Marine Center Community Improvement District (CID) which has financial advantages that will help finance public aspects of the project. Next step for CID approval is the state legislature.

The JDA timeline includes 9 to 12 months of due diligence which began last August to include soil testing and remediation planning, civil engineering, and environmental engineering. Then permitting could take 12 to 15 months and would include the marina and slip construction, waterway management, endangered species protection, and an ongoing management plan.

The St. Marys Marine Center could truly mean a major transformation for St. Marys ‘downtown, stepping forward into the future while enhancing the uniqueness of St. Marys as a friendly, waterfront village. Stay tuned for more details in the next issue of St. Marys Magazine.

Georgia has the distinction of establishing the nation’s first garden club in 1891. The St. Marys Garden Club was created in 1999 when 12 women met to share their enthusiasm and knowledge about plants and landscaping.

youth. Garden Club president Geri Shaw said the members are as excited as the students as they begin their gardening journey.

Since 2013, St. Marys Gardening Club’s “Earth Angels” have worked with nearly 1,500 second graders in five Camden County schools to grow plants from seeds and to learn about recycling.

The Go Green Junior Garden Club was established at Mary Lee Clark Elementary School where club members teach and assist fifth-grade pupils who learn how to plant vegetables, prune and weed gardens to increase pollinators, and are taught ecological stewardship. The Go Green students have won many awards including first place in the state of Georgia by The Garden Clubs of Georgia, Inc. The St. Marys Middle School Junior Garden Club was created at the beginning of this school year. The students are considering a variety of projects and have already started putting in their plants for their pollinator garden. It is just the beginning for the eager junior gardeners as they focus on all native plants and organic gardening.

While the youth programs are an important part of the club’s outreach efforts and can be a great conduit for future members, prior gardening experience is not a requirement to be a member.

There are members with backgrounds in horticulture and landscaping, but the main requirement to be part of the club is to have a passion for learning and sharing.

The club invites guest speakers who share their expertise and enable members to go into the community to help with different projects as well as cultivate, with greater knowledge, their own home gardens.

One of the club’s more visible and important activities is to restore and preserve landscaping at Orange Hall, perhaps the most recognizable structure in St. Marys.

They recently learned how to properly prune the crepe myrtles on the property.

The St. Marys Garden Club has worked with Habitat for Humanity to create a landscape at one of the newly built homes. The Habitat for Humanity project included designing and planting as well as presenting the homeowner with a garden guide that will help them care for their new plants. The club plans to work with the organization on an annual basis.

On Arbor Day the club donates a tree that is planted in the community. A local business is recognized each year with the St. Marys Garden Club Beautification Award for improvements that enhance its property.

And the club creates flower arrangements to present to local businesses as part of the National Garden Week activities.

St. Marys Garden Club’s main fundraiser is their plant sale at the annual Kiwanis Rock Shrimp Festival. “The most common mistakes made by home gardeners are over watering and over fertilizing their plants,” club members will tell you.

While gardening today is often a pastime that brings beauty to one’s life, for our early ancestors, gardening was a matter of survival. They used crude tools to cultivate useful plants to eat, remove undesirable species and create natural barriers to exclude both animals and enemies.

As the first civilizations emerged, gardens became more ornamental. Squares were landscaped in ancient villages with trees, bushes, shrubs, flowers and other plants. Among the most famous gardens from ancient times are The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, known as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Some of St. Marys Garden Club members’ creations are wonders in themselves—certainly treats to the eye.

And as they continue to expand their knowledge and continue to share their talents with others, members of the St. Marys Garden Club are to be applauded for their commitment to our community and their many contributions that make our world a little prettier and a little more fruitful.

The most comprehensive picture of Cumberland Island’s flora, fauna, geology, and ecology to date.

C

arol Ruckdeschel has lived on Cumberland Island for 46 years, so who better than she to write a comprehensive documentation of the flora and fauna, geology and ecology that lays claim to this isle of wonder.

In her recently published “A Natural History of Cumberland Island,” Ruckdeschel fills 282 pages with detailed explanations of how everything in nature works together on the island. She makes it clear that there is an interconnection between species and if one is eliminated, the effect in nature causes a balance shift.

Ruckdeschel has been referred to as the “Jane Goodall of sea turtles,” and is perhaps known best for her expert research and hands-on studies of this majestic species. She’s been the subject of several books, and in most, the authors like to emphasize her appreciation of “road kill” dining. Yes, she still eats roadkill, leaving nothing to waste that nature offers up including armadillo, alligator, and wild pig.

When one embarks on the journey through Ruckdeschel’s book, it’s immediately clear that this is not intended to be a “beach” read, but demands an involvement in the reading that will be rewarded by a better understanding and appreciation of Georgia’s largest barrier island.

The author is passionate about protecting Cumberland Island and pulls no punches when it comes to controversy such as the feral horses that roam the island.

“The horses are bad for the island, and the island is bad

for the horses,” she said in one interview. But she understands that the public needs to be educated as to why.

She explains that horses are grassland animals and the island is inhospitable terrain Carol Ruckdeschel for them, having witnessed the horses’ demise via snake bites, entanglement in vines, eaten by alligators, and their getting bogged down in the marsh.

Ruckdeschel writes about the many “communities” of Cumberland Island that include the beach and dunes, maritime forest, freshwater community, sloughs, wet savanna, swamp, salt marsh, and others. The diversity of the island is stunning when looked at through Ruckdeschel’s meticulous eye that combs the landscapes with intensity only a dedicated scientist would adhere to. A biologist by education, Ruckdeschel can be called a scientist with no qualms, for in this book she sticks with the facts when it would be so very easy to wander down a path of “what ifs.” But the facts dazzle!

n August 3, 2017, history was made in Camden County as the first commercial rocket launch of the 21st century in Georgia was witnessed at the site of proposed Spaceport Camden. As a result, the project was named 1 of the 10 technology game changers by Technology Association of Georgia.

Vector, a micro satellite space launch company, announced the successful suborbital flight of a full-scale prototype of its Vector-R launch vehicle representing the first customer-funded launch operation for the new space commercial launch industry.

A primary objective of the test launch was to demonstrate and evaluate a next-generation 3D additively manufactured engine injector developed through a collaborative research program with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.

CEO and Co-Founder of Vector Space Systems said, “Overall it was an A-plus experience. We hope they get approval for orbital launches soon so we can go back.”

“This is a significant accomplishment for Vector and for NASA’s initiatives to advance enabling technologies for suborbital and orbital small launch vehicles,” said Ron Young, NASA Flight Opportunities Program Manager.

“NASA’s role in helping the industry to develop commercial small satellite launch capabilities enables companies such as Vector to offer this capability to the commercial market place sooner.”

With advances such as the Vector launch, Spaceport Camden moves closer and closer to the reality of becoming the hub for commercial space launches in the Southeast.

The Camden site offers trajectories over the Atlantic Ocean which allows spacecraft to launch without having to fly over a significant population of people, a factor that weighs in strong for commercial companies seeking the most advantageous launch site.

Confidence for Spaceport Camden is building as more industry experts join the team with a mission to create the “premier spaceport strategically positioned to provide economic diversity with a competitive advantage for the space sector.” It was recently announced that Major General Robert Dickman had joined the Spaceport Camden Steering Committee. As the former commander of the 45th Space Wing and Director of the Eastern Range at Cape Canaveral, General Dickman oversaw twenty Titan IV, Atlas II and Delta II launches from Air Force launch sites on Cape Canaveral and provided range and range safety support to ten Shuttle missions from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center—all successful.

Spaceport Camden is now in the final stages of EIS approvals and well on its way to becoming Georgia’s commercial space gateway. With several components of the Spaceport complex now on the drawing board (see the latest Innovation Center drawings accompanying this article), opportunities abound for the facility to expand its purpose beyond rocket launches.

All launches from Spaceport Camden will capture the attention of the interested public, guaranteeing an increase in area tourism. Space tourism (where you actually go into space) is a small but growing field for qualified scientists, engineers, and explorers that can bring tourism dollars to the region as well. Virgin Galactic has sold hundreds of tickets for its private suborbital spaceflights currently under development.

Other potential site assets include a Spaceport visitor’s center, a museum focused on space science, and space camps for children. Spaceflight training onsite is another possibility.

Spaceport Camden team leaders see the Coastal Georgia economy enjoying a vibrant surge as more and more forward-thinking companies consider the advantages of relocation to what has the potential to be the Atlantic Seaboard’s space hub. Job growth would be a natural outcome of the success of Spaceport Camden as well.

“Spaceport Camden will inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers while creating aerospace and supply chain jobs,” Steve Howard said.

A The origins of the word “Okefenokee” are as mysterious as the big swamp itself. One long popular legend holds that the name is a Creek Indian word meaning “Land of the Trembling Earth.” There is probably a lot of truth to the legend. In the Hitchiti language of the Lower Creeks, the word Econfinoka translates literally to “trembling earth.” Econfinoka sounds very similar to Okefenokee when pronounced out loud.

quiet, forest-lined highway leads the way and sets the atmosphere for the journey into the third largest Wilderness area this side of the mighty Mississippi. A peaceful two-lane road completes the journey, leading visitors into the Folkston’s entrance of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge (the closest entrance to St. Marys). Native Americans called the Okefenokee “Land of the Trembling Earth.” Okefenokee Swamp provides relaxing breezes, songs of nature and breath-taking views from the lookout tower.

Upon entering the Welcome Center, guests are warmly greeted and given the option of watching an educational short film about the swamp. There are a few educational displays, and plenty of brochures and maps to help navigate to the many options throughout Okefenokee. Whether visiting with a school group, on a family outing, or as an individual looking to do some bird watching, the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge offers plenty of activities for everyone.

Chesser Island Homestead

W.T. Chesser and his family placed their roots in the swamp back in the mid-1800s, with grandson, Tom building the current homestead in 1927. The three-bedroom house was built in 21 days, and as his family grew, so did the house. Two more bedrooms were added, as well as a kitchen and back porch. The home was completely self-sufficient, with a sugar cane mill, beehives, syrup shed, smokehouse, grindstone, hog pen, storage shed, chicken coop and corn crib and livestock stall.

Visitors can drive to the location, with just a very short walk to the homestead. The buildings are open to walk through, except for the house. The maintained area provides a look back at what life was like nearly 100 years ago.

Annually, there is a Pioneer Day Festival that brings that way of life back to life. Activities at this yearly festival include displays of soap and broom making, butter churning, blacksmithing and sugarcane grinding.

Samples of cane juice and syrup are available, and food and craft items will be available for purchase.

Kids games and horse cart rides, kid crafts and interaction with a variety of farm animals will round out the festival. continued ...

Boardwalk and Tower

A short walking path connects the homestead to the Chesser Island Boardwalk & Owls Roost Tower. A hike down the ¾ mile boardwalk through the swamp leads to a 40-foot tower. The top of the tower offers a bench on either side, perfect for bird watching. The views are just amazing, and binocular viewers are provided for close-up views.

Photo ops are often available, and it isn’t uncommon to see gators sunbathing just a few feet from the edge of the boardwalk. There are three mini-gazebos on the side of the boardwalk, allowing for sitting and viewing different sections of the swamp.

Boat Tours

One of the most fun and interesting activities available at Okefenokee, the scenic boat tours provide an up close and personal view of the swamp. The sturdy 24-foot, flat-bottomed canopy-top boats provide an hour and half tour, with a knowledgeable tour guide. Cranes, deer, gator and a variety of birds can likely be spotted, with the occasional lucky view of a bobcat or bear. This educational and interesting tour runs year-round, with a tour every hour.

Swamp Island Drive

For the visitors that would rather view the swamp from the road, Swamp Island Drive is the perfect solution. There are 12 marked stopping places along the drive, and a brochure can be picked up at the visitor’s center that details each marker.

The first stop listed is the Canal Diggers Trail, which is an off-road hike through the wilderness. At less than a mile long, this trail intersects with other, longer trails such as The Upland Discovery Trail (#5) For a chance to see bears and turkeys, stop number 3 is a good option.

The best time to see wildlife is dawn and dusk, and stop 3 is filled with oaks and other deciduous trees that help cover wildlife.

This stretch of road also leads to parking spaces for the Homestead and Boardwalk.

Canoe and Kayak trails range in distance from 5 to 11 miles, and can be turned into an overnight camping adventure. The overnight wilderness camping experience provides plenty of opportunities to see wildlife at its finest, and brave campers can stay up to four nights. Reservations are required.

In addition to the canoes and kayaks available to rent, visitors can also rent small boats.

The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge does have more than one entrance. While this article outlines the exhibits and activities of the Folkston entrance, the other entrances offer a variety of activities as well. he year was 1925. Sears Roebuck opened its first store. Mount Rushmore was dedicated.

Scotch tape was invented. And St. Marys resident Leslie Linker entered this world, beginning a life that would span nine decades.

Linker was a country boy, pure and simple.

“When I started to walk, I started to hunt.” He got his first deer at the age of six.

“Mama was a great cook, and we dined on gator and venison and wild hog, and sea turtle eggs (they were legal back then), and we raised our own meats,” Linker said.

“We butchered our own hogs, trimming the fat for lard, then salted the meat. We smoked meat round the clock in winter,” he said. “Times were hard, but we ate high on the hog.”

There was no refrigeration back then either, but Linker said they would dig a hole in the ground, fill it with sawdust, and a 100-pound block of ice would last a week in there.

And there were no fences back then to divide property, so livestock were identified by their owner’s mark.

Growing up in Waverly, there were plenty of opportunities to explore the great outdoors and reap the harvests of Mother Nature.

Fishing on the Satilla River was heaven to a young boy back in the 1930s. And Linker was on the river every day, “even when it was freezing cold.”

He caught cottonmouths and gators with his dad. In the summer, when things got dry, Linker continued ... www.StMarysMagazine.com

would sometimes have to pull gators out of their holes. Once a gator chased him up a tree, “But I got him anyway,” Linker said.

Trapping was an important source of income for Linker and his dad. Buyers came from as far away as Savannah to purchase the fine skins the Linkers produced including minks. (The marshes were full of minks, according to Linker). He made his own traps.

And once they made $4000 in 45 days by selling skins. That was a lot of money back in the 1940s.

They raised redbone deer hounds that were good for hunting raccoons, bear, bobcats, wild hogs, and deer. Later, he would work on Cumberland Island catching cows and hogs. But fishing was his great love as well and he recalls catching 1000 pounds of fish in one haul.

Linker remembers helping his daddy and uncle load corn in wagons drawn by horses to take to the grist mill for grinding.

“My daddy made a little whiskey on the side,” Linker said, adding a little more income by living off the land.

When Linker turned 18, it was clear he would be headed to war, so he joined the Coast Guard and was assigned to a unit that patrolled the beaches with dogs. “We were always on the lookout www.StMarysMagazine.com

for German invaders,” he said. He also served on a ship that delivered weapons and ammunition to the Philippine Islands. Luckily, it was a small ship so the Japanese seldom made it a target, going instead for the larger military vessels that plowed the waters of the Pacific during World War II. “During the war, we saw a lot of stuff that I still remember,” Linker said. “And we saw a lot of stuff I’d like to forget.”

Linker met the love of his life, Jackie, after the war at the pavilion in downtown St. Marys. “The roads in downtown were dirt back then.” He said she looked like a movie star. He went on to marry Jackie, a descendant of Ponce de Leon, and their marriage would last 63 years until her passing. During their marriage, they did a lot of square dancing and belonged to several square dancing clubs. “We square danced for 30 years,” he said. Linker also belonged to saddle clubs and was an accomplished rider.

Later, Leslie Linker got a job at the paper mill where he worked for 35 years. He also did some extra work for Gilman, owner of the paper mill, including working on Orange Hall.

He remembers once getting a nest of bees out of a column at Orange Hall. He also worked on Gilman’s yachts.

“Gilman took care of St. Marys,” Linker said.

A visit to Linker’s home where he has lived for 55 years brings you face to face with the many trophies he has acquired over the years. On the wall, you’ll see a stuffed 35-pound red bass, 23 sets of deer antlers, three large deer head, and a boar’s head.

So what does this nonagenarian do these days to fill his time?

He still collects oysters during the winter months, and still fishes a lot.

And he still wants to be on the river.

For a man who’s lived on sweets and fried meats all his life, Leslie Linker has a vitality about him that a 70-year-old could envy.

“Hard work,” he said. “I always worked hard but I enjoyed it. That’s what will keep you young.”

here do big cats--really big cats--go to retire?

If you’re a lion or tiger or leopard, and if you want to spend your senior years surrounded by love and given great medical care, you are going to opt for retirement at the Catty Shack Ranch in Jacksonville.

Just a short drive from St. Marys (we made it in about 30 minutes), Catty Shack Ranch sits amid gentle woodlands and houses some of God’s most majestic creatures.

The king of the jungle (the African lion) is there. So are Siberian and white tigers, black leopards, cougars, jaguars, and bobcats. And that’s just the cat family. Today, Curt continues to expand his expertise, attending conferences in the exotic animal industry and working with the Fish and Game Commission. He attributes much of the success of Catty Shack Ranch to the generous group of veterinarians, specialists, and dentists who donate their time and services to care for the ranch residents.

One can learn a lot on a tour of the facility which is open to the public on certain days and also hosts many group outings. For example, did you know that it is believed that there are only 10 to 15 white tigers that exist in the wild making them “critically endangered.”

Jordan shared the proposed plan drawings of a greatly expanded facility which includes a meeting room that can be rented for special events, a rehab pool, new medical center, and new and expanded habitats. The expanded facility, once plans are approved, will also include “glamping” tents to further enhance the visitor experience. Jordan says that hopes are to have the plans approved by spring 2018.

The objective of the raid is a bit unclear. U.S. officers reported that the British were going to destroy Archibald Clark’s sawmill near present-day Folkston, Georgia. The British, however, said they were going to attack U.S. “works”—an apparent reference to the U.S. post at Camp Pinckney near Colerain.

The British marines, 52 in number, started up the river by water on February 23, 1815. The seven barges and one gig (a gig is a small boat rowed with oars) were under the command of Commander Charles George Rodney Phillot of HMS Primrose and Commander David Ewen Bartholomew of HMS Erebus.

On February 24, 1815—47 days after the Battle of New Orleans, 42 days after the Battle of Point Peter and 12 days after the Second Battle of Fort Bowyer—they reached a point within 3/4 of a mile of their objective:

The American and Patriot forces involved in the Battle of the St. Marys reported a loss of 2 killed and no wounded.

The British reported their losses at 29 killed and wounded. Among the latter were both Phillot and Bartholomew.

Eighteen of those hit by American fire were reported to be seriously wounded.

The Battle of the St. Marys took place along the river from about 3/4 of a mile downstream from today’s Camp Pinckney Landing near Folkston all the way down to near St. Marys where the British boats finally pulled out of the range of the American rifles.

The mini golf course is not just a golf course, it’s a way KOA partner Ron Shamblin has of promoting regional attractions.

With plans to enhance the KOA facility with family-friendly mini golf, Shamblin “dreamed up” the concept of theming each hole on the course around an area attraction. Not only would it be educational, he figured it would be a good way to get people interested in exploring other attractions during their stay.

“It’s a work in progress,” Shamblin says explaining the details of what’s to come. There will be granite markers at each hole with details about the attraction, he said.

With so many attractions in the area, Shamblin had a hard time narrowing down the themes to just 18.

A Cumberland Island hole is underway that features wild horse sculptures, a sea turtle, and the iconic egret that rules the face of the Cumberland Island minted quarter making its debut next year.

A life-sized gator sculpture fascinates all visitors and is a great symbol of the nearby Okefenokee Swamp along with a lagoon featured at the Okefenokee-themed hole.

One hole showcases a manatee depicting Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island. There is a sandy beach scene with pelicans, and all sorts of wildlife art. And of course, what mini golf course would be complete without those fun “mischief spinners” that can make playing even more fun (or more challenging).

The KOA Campground, which is just minutes from St. Marys’ historic district, offers as much as many resorts do. And now, a mini golf course that—thankfully, is open to the public so locals can enjoy as well.

ilm makers spent a staggering $2 billion in Georgia in 2016 and the numbers for 2017 are expected to top that.

(As of press time, numbers were not available.)

In 2017, Georgia ranked No. 1 as a filming location above Hollywood and New York according to “FilmL.A.,” which based its results on the number of box office-topping movies that filmed in each production center.

The future looks even brighter for 2018 as some states have diminished their financial incentives for film makers while Georgia has held steadfast to its “up to 30%” tax credit offering.

“Big Ears” will be a live-action adaptation of “Dumbo,” a 1941 Disney classic about an elephant assisted by a mouse to achieve his full potential when he was ridiculed because of his enormous ears.

In late 2017, a film crew for “Big Ears” came to St. Marys to film backdrop footage for the highly anticipated movie.

Depicting Florida, where the world’s most famous circuses have always had their winter homes, footage was filmed around the railroad, at the Borrell Creek trestle, and other locations in St. Marys.

“And it’s fun to be able to tell St. Marys Express passengers that they are now riding through a movie set,” he said, referring to the railroad filming.

At press time, Disney was in talks with both Tom Hanks and Will Smith as possible stars in “Big Ears.”

And speaking of Will Smith, St. Marys was also visited and reviewed by a film location scout this year as a possible site for an upcoming Will Smith movie.

While associates of Coastal Georgia Film Alliance, the Camden County organization that helps facilitate filming in the area, eagerly welcome big names like Disney and Tim Burton, they are in the business of promoting film production in Coastal Georgia to all levels of film makers. Another film maker returning to St. Marys in early 2018 is up-and-comer Brandon Herron whose short films have won awards on a national level. Herron plans to utilize local extras as well.

“Residents of our area really enjoy participating in a movie,” Vaught said. “Seeing yourself or someone you know on the big screen is a real thrill and we endeavor to make sure the opportunity for film participation is put out there in a way that promotes diversity and makes our hometown look good.”

While St. Marys and the surrounding area are enjoying their role as cinemagical backdrops to blockbuster movies, the entire state of Georgia has much to brag about. It takes a lot to surpass film production numbers in Hollywood and New York, but sweet southern Georgia did it and continues to draw big names, big budgets, and big ideas that play out on the silver screen to movie lovers all over the world.

ake a look around the South today and you’ll see the name Hardee in abundance, on street signs and strip malls, fast food drive-thrus and logging trucks, and a city of 5000 above the Savannah River. Georgia son William Joseph Hardee hailed from Camden County two centuries ago, yet after leaving for the U.S. Military Academy in New York, he never looked back as a career and retirement lay elsewhere.

The name, though, lives on in the local phone book down several generations gratis a brother, Dr. Charles Hardee.

Only remnants of the estate are found today along the Little Satilla River.

After his 1834 appointment to West Point, he graduated in 1838, 26th of 45 cadets and was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Dragoons. He initially served in Florida Territory in the Second Seminole War (1835-42) but as was common for soldiers stationed in the teeming wilds of the Deep South then, he fell ill. While hospitalized he met and married Elizabeth Dummett and was soon promoted to 1st lieutenant. In 1840 he was sent to France to study military tactics and by 1844 he had advanced to captain.

In the Mexican War (1846-48), Hardee served under Gen. Zachary Taylor where he was awarded brevet battlefield promotions to major and lieutenant colonel. He was captured in a skirmish in April 1846 but was exchanged for a Mexican officer.

The next year under Gen. Winfield Scott he was wounded in another clash.

After the war, he returned to permanent major rank, Regular Army, and led U.S. soldiers and Texas Rangers across the Lone Star State.

After his wife, Elizabeth, died in 1853, Hardee received orders to West Point as Military Tactics instructor, assigned also to the newly formed 2nd Cavalry and serving as its regimental senior major.

In 1855 at the request of the U.S. Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, Hardee published Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics, aka Hardee’s Tactics.

This would be used by Yankee and Rebel alike in the War of the Rebellion to come. From 1856-60, Hardee was Commandant of Cadets at West Point and was reassigned also to 1st Cavalry as regimental lieutenant colonel.

After Georgia seceded from the Union in early 1861, Hardee pledged allegiance to his home state rather than his nation. He resigned his commission and joined the Confederate States as colonel. Initially commanding two forts in Alabama, he soon served under Gen. Braxton Bragg. Although he took issue with a field general or two, redirecting his career path more than once, he was one of the first Confederate lieutenant continued ... www.StMarysMagazine.com

generals and was soon promoted to major general. As a master of difficult supply problems, he picked up the nickname “Old Reliable.”

In April 1862 Hardee joined Gen. A.S. Johnston’s Army of Mississippi as Corps Commander at the Battle of Shiloh (ironically Hebrew for “place of peace”) where he was wounded. After Johnston was killed in action, Hardee’s corps joined Bragg’s Army of Tennessee – Southern armies were named for states, the North’s for watersheds. After the Battle of Perryville (KY) in October 1862, he led a triumphant battle at Stone’s River (TN) where his troops drove those of Maj.-Gen. W.S. Rosecrans to near defeat. Hardee next served in the Dept. of Mississippi under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston during which he met Mary Foreman Lewis, Alabama plantation owner. They would marry in January 1864.

Hardee returned to Bragg’s army in September 1863 after the Battle of Chickamauga (GA-TN border), a marginal Confederate victory, and took command of the corps of Gen. Leonidas Polk, an Episcopal bishop KIA (don’t ask how.) At the Battle of Chattanooga in November, Hardee’s new corps was defeated on Missionary Ridge when Union Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas’ troops overran the seemingly impregnable Rebel lines. By late ’63 Hardee had rallied his regrouped Gray Shirts at Chattanooga but were routed again by the Blue Jackets of William T. Sherman. The following summer, 1864, the Battle of Resaca above Atlanta served only to delay the Federals’ advance as Sherman vowed to “make Georgia howl.” And he did as the South’s centuries-old plantation lifestyle was ground into the red Georgia clay, tossed on the breeze, gone with the wind, if you will.

Hardee’s tattered army fled to the Carolinas from Savannah yet Sherman spared that city. Charleston and Columbia fell next. that line of Hardees. By early April, the Army of Northern Virginia had scattered south and west of Richmond ahead of waves of U.S. troops, and at a country courthouse we know as Appomattox, Gen. Grant received Gen. Lee’s sword. The honor itself was awarded to Gen. Joshua Chamberlain whose forces at Gettysburg two years earlier helped halt the rebels’ push toward Washington City.

After the war, Hardee settled with Mary on her family’s Alabama plantation and returned it to working order. The warehousing and insurance businesses next drew him to Selma where he became president of Selma & Meridian Railroad. Here he also co-authored “The Irish in America” in 1868, but after falling ill in 1873 he died that November, age 58, and was buried there.

A road trip today up U.S. Route 17 through meandering Low Country—you can zip up I-95 but what’s the rush?— delivers you to Hardeeville, SC, named for father and son, Isaac and White Hardee, likely close cousins of William and Charles. This berg was a new post-bellum rail stop on the Charleston-Savannah run along the nation’s emerging network of iron engineered by former West Pointers. Of 425 Confederate generals, Hardee was one of 146 USMA graduates, a fraternity of America’s best and brightest, then as now, who embraced Duty, Honor, and Country. That is, were you true to your sworn oath as an American officer.

Yet Hardee, drawn to the siren call of Lee, Davis and the others in a quixotic quest for Southern sovereignty founded clearly on slavery, could thank President Lincoln and Grant—wishing for full conciliation not recrimination—that he’d serve not a minute in prison, or worse, for sedition and his part in our national tragedy. Alas, William J. Hardee left only tarnished tracks along the arc of history.

sunlight turns the St. Marys River into a bed of shimmering diamonds. Miller says you don’t call tai chi a “work”out, because it’s more play than work.

In tune with the surrounding nature, the tai chi players perform movements handed down through the ages. Each move flows seamless into the next, mimicking the flow of water. Miller says that water is a perfect metaphor for tai chi, quoting ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu. “Water is fluid, soft, yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. Water moves around objects rather than trying to go through them.”

With minds totally focused, the players perform graceful movements designed to replenish energy and infuse calm.

According to Chinese medicine, a healthy organism or person has more qi (pronounced chee) or energy than a sick one. Health, however, is more than just having an abundance of qi, rather it implies that the qi is clear, not polluted, and that it flows smoothly.

Originating in ancient China, tai chi has its roots in the martial–or fighting–arts. Today, however, it’s practiced worldwide for its health benefits.

As everyone is welcome, the monthly St. Marys’ Tai Chi in the Park draws a diversity of young and older people, with a variety of backgrounds—nursing, education, technology, dentistry, accounting, and more.

Arriving not only from Camden County but also outlying areas—Fernandina, Jacksonville, Brunswick, and Waycross—they are joined in a common love of practicing tai chi for better health.

Ask those who are playing tai chi why they do so, and you’ll find the answers vary as well. She found it— amazingly—at her workplace (World Bank) in the class of a Vietnamese economist who was also a tai chi master. He had begun teaching at lunchtime because, as he said, “There’s too much stress around here.

found 88-year-old Gwen Fink arranging her most recent creations for display at the St. Marys Community Market— one-of-a-kind novelties like her penguin rain stick, an avocado shell turtle, a thunder drum gourd, and a beautiful array of hand-woven baskets all made by the soft-spoken octogenarian. While other people’s grandmothers may be whiling their days away in a comfy rocking chair, Gwen is busy thinking up her next creation—surely something to delight an unsuspecting shopper.

Wood-carving is another one of Gwen’s talents—something she picked up in her days of living in the North Carolina mountains.

Next door to Gwen’s booth, Ken’s Creative displays gorgeous wood bowls and pens, all made by Ken from native Georgia and Florida woods. Though Hurricane Irma was an unwanted guest for thousands, Ken turned a lemon into lemonade by using wood from the many felled trees to make pieces of art that shoppers consider found treasure. wo hundred happy voices can be heard singing Pharrell Williams’ soul-catching hit “Happy” as locomotive 2389 eats up the last tracks heading into the train station in St. Marys.

Even though the St. Marys Express railcars are covered, the folks onboard claim to feel like “a room without a roof,” and they’re declaring that “happiness is the truth.”

It doesn’t matter what your worries were when you climbed aboard the St. Marys Express, the clickety-clack sound of steel wheels on steel rail will soon have your mind cleared and open to the adventure ahead.

face,” one train volunteer proclaims underway. And clearly, the volunteers and staff that run the St. Marys Express are in the “people-pleasing” business.

You can purchase a ticket to ride in the locomotive or actually run the locomotive, but families seem to enjoy the open-air car rides the most where characters depicting the ride’s theme roam the railcars and interact with the passengers.

Riding a train is a bit of a nostalgic experience anyway considering that only 6% of the population has ever even ridden a real train. The St. Marys Express takes passengers on a journey into yesteryear with themed adventures including the Wild West Express, Peter Cottontail Express, Halloween Express, Santa Express, and new this year is the Storybook Express.

On the Storybook Express “Once Upon a Time” goes into overdrive with favorite storybook characters joining together to save somebody, or something, or the world.

“There is always a drama,” said St. Marys Express Stationmaster and Narrator Doug Vaught. “People come aboard expecting a simple train ride, but they get a whole lot of entertainment that always engages the passengers.”

On the most recent Santa Express, train passengers encouraged Santa to give the Grinch a chance to prove his magic and become an elf. Lots of laughter and oohs and ahs ensued when the Grinch made it snow at the midway point, thus earning his elf ears.

When the five minute whistle blows, passengers start to get an idea of what’s to come when unexpected characters board the train. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn have made an appearance. So have Ben Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. The Tooth Fairy has been known to ride the train as have Batman, Wonder Woman and Captain America. Even Elvis came aboard last year.

But there is one character that always makes an annual appearance—Santa Claus.

to give more families the opportunity to experience the magic of Santa Land and the enchanting story that always comes with the holiday outing.

The incorrigible hobos, Krystal and Chris, also manage to steal their way aboard for every train ride, charming passengers with their down home wit.

Stationmaster asks them, “How do you sneak past the conductor every single time,” and they will answer, “We’re slicker and quicker.”

The St. Marys Express is run, for the most part, by volunteers, who also enjoy dressing in costumes and entertaining the crowds. Sometimes, outside groups are brought in to bolster the entertainment. For example, for the Wild West Express, the Cowford Regulators are tapped to put on an action-packed re-enactment of an old western scene.

These real life cowboys are part of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), an international organization created to preserve and promote the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting. Cowboys participating in the Wild West Express often travel to shooting competitions around the country, and many have garnered regional and national awards.

“Every train excursion is different,” Entertainment Director Barbara Ryan said. “That’s why so many of our passengers ride multiple excursions throughout the year.”

“We continue to raise the bar on entertainment for the St. Marys Express rides,” Ryan said. “Our goal is to surprise, to delight, and to leave passengers with the sense that they have experienced something magical as they dis-embark from the train. I guess you could say we are in the ‘happiness’ business.”

ormer St. Marys City Councilman L. J. Williams was a pioneer for and now is a veteran performer in St. Marys Little Theatre (SMLT). His 3-year-old daughter, Natalyah, is fastly becoming a veteran as well having participated in several performances already.

The Holt Family, fairly new to the St. Marys Little Theatre scene, now comprises its anchor points with the mom, Constance, serving not only as set designer and builder, but also house manager. The father, Tim, constructs sets and does a lot of problem solving. Son Garrett is the new sound tech, and daughter Faith has immersed herself in the role of makeup artist.

The James family wins the award for “most performers from one family on SMLT’s stage” that includes Mom Hannah, Dad Sean, sons Cullen, Carrick, and Connor, and daughter Chloe-Rose.

Brother and Sister Fred Myers and Starlette Myers-Reed have their own following and draw a big crowd every time they perform for SMLT—most recently in December’s “Miracle at the North Pole.”

“Miracle at the North Pole” was also fortunate to have Nichole Sternad as lighting tech and her son Nathan and Daughter Nia as spotlight operators.

Three generations sometimes take the SMLT stage when patriarch Carol Moore, his son, Wade, and granddaughter, Melissa grace the stage with their awesome talent.

SMLT has fostered family inclusion from its first performance of Man of La Mancha six years ago.

Williams, who also serves as SMLT’s vice chair, says that families are so pressed for time together, the experience of live theatre is an exceptional opportunity for them to spend quality time and also to bond through mutual achievement.

“Learning lines, going to rehearsals, playing different roles is a great experience for families to enjoy together,” Williams said. “The children learn about responsibility, commitment, time management, improved communication skills, and also develop a sense of pride in accomplishing something that is appreciated by hundreds (our audiences.)”

Every SMLT Christmas production has a message.

This year’s was that being different could be a good thing. As bullying becomes more and more a problem for today’s youth, sending a message of hope to those who consider themselves “different” is a good thing.

“SMLT productions often address the social conscience,” said SMLT founder and chair Barbara Ryan. “We aspire to open hearts and minds through our productions and at the same time provide a magical escape into an engaging story.”

“Our actors are adept at emblazing their emotions on people’s hearts, capturing and enlivening the humanity of our audiences,” she continued.

In 2018, SMLT endeavors to continue what has become “family tradition” by being inclusive with family members of all ages. SMLT’s 2018 theatre year was launched with “The Secret Garden” in January, a production that was reprised after its original September show date was postponed due to Hurricane Irma. In February, a diverse ensemble including families will perform “The Chimney,” an original musical that commemorates Black History Month. The spring brings a blockbuster Broadway play—“Guys and Dolls.” In September, audiences will be treated to a second original musical by David Pooler called “Carnival Man.” Pooler’s talent as a songwriter and playwright debuted in SMLT’s “Crippen” performed two seasons ago. The year will end with another Christmas spectacular in December.

St. Marys Little Theatre truly is a “family affair,” and 2018 is destined to be another year of sold-out audiences and standing ovations. SMLT’s mission of “Enhancing Lives through Performance Arts” continues to be honored and underscored as captivating stories, enthralling music, and stellar talent combine to entertain and inspire the Coastal Georgia community.

There she is! With armloads of candy, she begins throwing the sweets at train passengers. Smiles and laughter fill the train as most everyone gets in on the treats. Judy Miller has accomplished her mission for the day. In spades.

“If I can just make one person smile each day, I feel good about myself,” Judy said.

She’s earned approximately 200 smiles on this day, and there are three more train rides to go.

Judy Miller has become known as the “Candy Lady” of St. Marys. When it’s especially hot, she will lift up boxes of frozen popsicles instead of candy.

Her two German Shepherds—10-year-old Shadow and 9-year-old Midnight Mist—bring as much joy to her as she does to thousands of train riders.

“A home is not a home without a dog,” reads a sign in her living room. And the shirt she is wearing features a German shepherd with wings.

“German Shepherds are the most loyal animals,” she says.

“They will lay their life down for you and protect you with their dying breath.” Perhaps that is why so many military and law enforcement personnel choose the breed for their team.

Judy knows that people are better off with dogs and she will do what it takes to help people keep dogs in their home. Her dog-walking service started out as a free service to seniors.

“It hurts me to see a dog dragging its owner down the street,” Judy said. “When I train the dog to walk properly, there is a much greater chance that a senior—or anyone for that matter—will keep the dog in the home rather than surrendering them to the Humane Society.”

Her first pro bono client was going to return her dog to the shelter. It took Judy only 45 minutes to train the senior’s dog to walk properly.

With her dog walking services, Judy’s goal is to “keep the dog happy and keep the owners happy.”

When owners are away, she will send them photos and videos to keep them connected to their pet and to reassure them that the pet is doing well.

If the dogs don’t have toys when they begin under her care, she makes sure they have plenty when she leaves.

“Animals don’t go by the brain but by the heart,” she said. “And they know a person’s heart.” And maybe that is why they are so responsive to Judy Miller, because clearly she has a heart of gold.

Through the years, Judy has had numerous dogs and many of them German Shepherds. And she’s trained them all. She also trained her rabbit, “Thumper,” and a holy burro which turned out to be a super watchdog.

not taking the time to train it,” she said.

“Once you let an animal be the alpha, you have problems.”

Gidget was Judy’s first German shepherd. She taught Gidget to talk. “She would say ‘I want out’ and ‘I love you.’”

She says that “Once you have the respect of a dog, they will do anything for you.”

Judy’s own two dogs are strong testaments to her ability to train animals. They are extremely well-behaved and look at their owner with eyes full of love. Who couldn’t use some of that unconditional love?

Kate’s primary career is focused around her position as school nurse for St. Marys Elementary School. But fashion has always held her interest.

She designs a lot of the jewelry—artistic pieces with a copper theme for the most part. Her retail journey began when she was a vendor in various markets. From there, she created an online boutique which has now grown into “bricks and mortar.”

“We get a lot of our fashion from Los Angeles which is known for its trend-setting,” Kate said. “But we also carry many southern-based items that include candles, soap and other bath products.”

When perusing the racks at Southern Saint, it is clear that “fashion-forward” is the central theme. But Kate emphasizes the boutique’s commitment to affordability.

“If it’s a price that we won’t spend, we can’t expect our customers to spend it,” she said.

It seems that fashion is what gets the customers into the door and price keeps them coming back.

Diversity is also a driver for Kate and Kaitlyn as they work to stay well-stocked in clothing sizes from 0 to 24.

Local Resident Wins First Place for Railroad Diorama Cindy Bonnett is an artist.

She has been a volunteer for St. Marys Little Theatre and St. Marys Railroad Museum for several years. Recently, her art was recognized nationally when she was awarded First Place by the National Model Railroad Association for a diorama she created.

Cindy started in the hobby of model railroading while stationed in Naples, Italy with the US Navy. She said there was very little TV available and she is the kind of person who must stay busy, so she took up the hobby. She found that it was the scenery and buildings she most enjoyed creating.

During the 2017 National Model Railroad Association’s annual convention in Orlando, Cindy won First Place in the scratch-built category and also was awarded First Place Display and First Place Most Photogenic. She also won

“Model Deserving of Sound” and Third Place Photo Match.

Her entry was a model of a tower to lift cement into a construction site. It was modeled after a construction site for the O’Shaunessy Dam on the Hetch Hetchy River in California.

For her diorama, all items were scratch built from balsa wood and cardstock. Using a power point program, she altered various pictures into what she needed. For example, the roofing started out as a photo she took of an old washboard.

“Creating something out of something else was my biggest challenge,” Cindy said.

She’s not sure what the future holds for the model she created. It might be sent to California.

“Right now, it is tucked away in my closet where I can sneak a peek at it once in a while,” she said.

he deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command recently presented the Omaha Trophy for Best Ballistic Missile Submarine to USS Alaska (SSBN 732) at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. Vice Adm. Charles “Chas” Richard presented the trophy to the crew of Alaska and praised them for their hard work and dedication.

Alaska conducted three strategic deterrent patrols for a total of 270 days at sea in 2016, including the longest continuous alert period of any unit from Kings Bay in the last four years.

In addition to the 2016 Omaha Trophy award, USS Alaska also earned the 2016 Battle Efficiency, or Battle “E,” award for the best command in Submarine Squadron 20.

Commissioned in 1986, USS Alaska is the fourth Navy ship to be named for the Territory or State of Alaska.
