Sisters

of

Mercy Hospitals

On June 24, 1895, Mater Misericordiae, the “Sisters* Hospital,” had opened its doors at 23rd between Q and R Streets in the former Ridge Home. The home was donated by Mrs. E.B. Crocker for the care of elderly women, and became Sacramento’s first full-fledged hospital. The Ridge Home had the interest ofDrs. Huntington and G.L. Simmons. The latter had gone east to study at the Harvard Medical School. He and Dr. Huntington devoted much of their time to public health and community welfare in general. They had helped the Sisters ofMercy, at their convent at 9 th and G Streets, to take over the Ridge Home.
