A HISTORY OP HOSPITALS AND SHELTERS FOR THE SICK 23
Emergency Cholera Hospital Scurvy, diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid fever and malaria were the most common medical problems in the area. Malaria was said to have been introduced by immigrants from Canada. The local swamps abounded with the necessary vector, the Anopheles mosquito. Diagnosed in lesser numbers were cases of typhus, rheumatism, erysipelas, infection following inju ries, and pneumonia. Respiratory infections were common.
