OWENSBORO HEALTH REGIONAL HOSPITAL

OWENSBORO, KY

Owensboro Health engaged SSR to provide MEP design engineering and technology consulting services on the Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, a 780,000 SF replacement facility. The Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) project had an overall goal of delivering a new healthcare facility that centered on patient experience and staff satisfaction. The nine-story hospital includes an emergency department, PACU, 16-OR surgery unit, pharmacy, and children’s services.

In designing the new facility, SSR and the IPD team were diligent in keeping key needs of Owensboro Health first. The project had a tight timeline and budget. To meet these requirements, lean design principals were applied. Because of the IPD arrangement, major MEP systems were selected early in design and the team was able to use pre-fabricated construction materials. Due to the close coordination among the design teams, multiple design packages were released, allowing construction to begin before design was completed. These factors allowed for shortened design and construction time.

OWENSBORO
HEALTH REGIONAL HOSPITAL

MISSION HOSPITAL FOR ADVANCED MEDICINE

ASHEVILLE, NC

The Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine project is a 608,000 SF expansion to replace and relocate services of Mission St. Joe Hospital from across Biltmore Avenue onto the main Mission campus. The 11-floor tower includes intensive diagnostic and treatment modalities (emergency department, interventional surgery, cath, and ICU) in addition to multiple nursing unit floors.

The project involved complicated phasing and interconnection with existing utilities that required the combined effort of both the designer and builder. SSR and the general contractor engaged the major trade subcontractors in an extensive design-assist program, to enable the subs to begin their coordination and fabrication processes early (to meet an aggressive project schedule) and to identify and resolve coordination issues before they hit the field.

MOHAWK VALLEY HEALTH SYSTEM

SSR is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology, and sustainability engineering and consulting services for a 685,000 SF, 360-bed replacement hospital for Mohawk Valley Health System in Utica, NY. Project program includes new emergency department, diagnostic, interventional, behavioral health, and inpatient units for med-surg and critical care as a replacement for the St. Luke’s and St. Elizabeth’s hospital campuses. Our scope includes a new central energy plant, including 5MW generator capacity and 3,000-ton chiller capacity.

COOK CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER

FORT WORTH, TX

ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL

MEMPHIS, TN

SSR has been working with Cook Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) since 1996, helping this growing campus evolve and anticipate future needs. Over the past two decades, we’ve been involved in a wide variety of projects, including major renovations and additions, master plans, expansions, and upgrades. Some of our key projects with CCMC include the North and South Towers and Dodson Specialty Clinic on the main campus in Fort Worth, TX, and Cook Children’s Northeast Hospital in Hurst, TX.

One of the world’s premier centers for research and treatment of children, is building a new, 560,000 SF research tower to house additional research laboratory / vivarium space to support current and future research demand. The tower’s programming includes the lab, vivarium, and administrative areas, as well as supplemental support spaces.

SSR provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design services for the tower. Included in our scope of work was a design-assist energy model that helped the project team in maximizing the energy efficiency of the building and guided cost effective decision making.

GOLISANO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

FORT MYERS, FL

LOUIS AND PEACHES OWEN

HEART HOSPITAL

TYLER, TX

The Lee Memorial Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida manifests the vision of the Lee Memorial Health System to expand their pediatric healthcare from a “hospital within a hospital” to a 160-bed, free-standing children’s hospital. Located on the existing Health Park’s campus, this project had four components: the Children’s Pavilion (293,505 SF), expansion for the central energy plant (8,004 SF) to support the Children’s Pavilion, various renovation and enabling projects to the existing HealthPark Medical Center (88,508 SF), and the addition of a parking garage.

The Louis & Peaches Owen Heart Hospital includes an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation suite, an expanded surgery suite with three operating rooms, and shell for three additional rooms, 24-bed nursing units on two floors and shell for one more floor. Originally opened in 2012, SSR provided services for an expansion to the existing hospital to provide a designated, high profile entrance.

VANDERBILT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

NASHVILLE, TN

Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt recently completed a four-story vertical expansion, adding 170,000 SF of space that will be used to fulfill current and future healthcare needs of children from Tennessee and surrounding states. This expansion brings Children’s Hospital’s inpatient capacity to nearly one million total SF.

The project included an expansion of the existing mechanical penthouse, addition of four new floors, and relocation of the existing heliport. One floor was fit-out as a state-of-the-art inpatient bed floor (NICU and/ or PICU) and the remaining three floors are for future expansion.

As part of the expansion, the design team took the opportunity to propose updates and modifications to the existing facility that increased the energy efficiency of the building. Additionally, the new square footage required infrastructure upgrades for additional capacity, including the installation of a steam turbine chiller.

CHEYENNE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

CHEYENNE, WY

Looking to provide top-notch care to the surrounding communities and remain competitive in the marketplace, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center (CRMC) engaged SSR to provide mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design and technology services for a new cancer center and emergency department expansion.

During design of the 48,000SF cancer center, the team had to keep a possible future vertical expansion in mind when laying out systems and how they could be expanded if necessary. The center provides a single location for education, support, and therapy for the surrounding communities. The center houses a state-ofthe-art linear accelerator and tomography suite, as well as a new CT/SIM system. In addition to the new cancer center, CRMC expanded their exiting emergency department. Designing additions can prove difficult, especially when the existing facility remains in operations, as CRMC did. To accommodate this, the 40,000 SF expansion was completed in phases, shuffling around departments as needed to ensure patient care and safety at all times. The addition allowed for an additional five trauma bays, eight CDU exam rooms, four psychiatric exam rooms, 14 general exam rooms, a satellite pharmacy, and a penthouse that holds all new MEP infrastructure.

MEP FOR HEALTHCARE

SSR provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design and construction administration services for the 12-floor, 460-room patient-centered UT Southwestern William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, a facility that utilizes innovative design, advanced technology, and best practices to provide excellence in care. The main hospital opened in 2014 and experienced a greater-than-expected demand for care. To meet this need, UT Southwestern undertook a $480 million, 12-story expansion that serves as the clinical home for the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute, consolidating acute inpatient care services currently provided at Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and adding operating rooms, interventional suites, an expanded emergency department, and two new parking facilities.

The new podium and tower connected to the existing hospital at each of the 12 floors and the design of the original facility allows the expansion to proceed with minimal disruption to existing operations. Clements University Hospital, including its ER, remained operational throughout the 30-month project.

SARASOTA MEMORIAL HYBRID OR-21

SARASOTA, FL

UNION WEST HOSPITAL

UNION COUNTY, NC

Looking to provide the highest level of care to the residents of Sarasota and surrounding communities, Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) renovated and upgraded OR-21 to serve as the pilot for several future OR renovations. It was SMH’s desire to create a hybrid OR, combining a traditional operating room with advanced imaging services. The hospital decided to employ new technology in the room, such as a modular ceiling system and stainless steel wall panels. These features addressed two key goals of the project: a reduced down time for OR-21 and the surrounding space; and improved patient care.

Looking to provide high-quality care for the residents of western Union County, North Carolina, Atrium Health has broken ground on the new Atrium Health Union West. The campus will include a 150,000 SF hospital and 65,000 SF medical office building when completed in early 2022. The hospital will offer emergency, inpatient, and outpatient care to better support the needs of the community and will ensure residents continue to have local access to world-class patient care.

Once complete, the hospital will feature 36 licensed acute-care beds; eight labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) rooms; and four intensive care unit (ICU) beds.
