Happy Holidays Thirty-Three Days The Holiday Season at Springmill

with a bang. And on the 33rd day, don’t forget to attend the Middletown “Hummers” parade along Main Street on January 1 to enjoy spoofs of 2013 news stories.

In 2013 there are just thirty-three days between Black Friday which is the traditional start of the holiday shopping season and New Year’s Day which is the official end of the “holidays”. This is the shortest possible holiday period because Thanksgiving occurred on November 28th this year. This is a very busy time at Springmill. Residents have the opportunity to get involved in a myriad of activities.

But the holidays are not just about all the activities mentioned above. They are also a time to take a good look around you. They are about finding something spiritual and wonderful about yourself, your life, and the people who fill it and make it special. Peace on Earth. Good Will to All.

Just a day or two ago, many of us rose at the crack of dawn or earlier to rush to stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Boscov’s and Kohls for the Black Friday specials that were being offered. If we got lucky, a good portion of our Christmas shopping was accomplished in just a few hours.

Bob Gross Our friend and neighbor Bob Gross lost his eighteen month battle with pancreatic cancer on November 18th at the Christiana Care hospice center. Bob & Joan have been supported in their long fight with the illness by many of their Springmill neighbors. During Bob’s treatment with chemotherapy he was transported to and from the hospital by a group he dubbed as his “chemo sabees”. Members of Joan’s Book club and Bridge club have been there to chip in their emotional support as well as a few desserts. As

The next activity is to get our homes decorated for the holidays. Wreaths and lights are installed outside while Christmas trees, garland, candles and other decorations adorn the interior. The first weekend of December consists of a multitude of events to get us into the “holiday spirit”. On December 6 The Springmill Travel Club is sponsoring a trip to the American Music Theatre in Lancaster to see “The First Noel”, the always entertaining Holiday Show. The next day is “Christmas in Odessa”, a must for many residents who participate in the many activities offered just a few minutes away. The weekend culminates in the CEC-sponsored “Holiday Party” on Sunday, December 8, at 3 p.m. The Springmill Tree will be decorated while carolers entertain and residents enjoy food and drink.

Several groups within Springmill plan holiday events. Some wine groups leave their homes to enjoy festive holiday dinners paired with wine offerings at various restaurants. The Red Hats pick a special place for lunch. During December there are many activities in which Springmill residents show their generosity. The Charity Committee is putting the finishing touches on fundraising activities to collect money and gifts for worthwhile causes. Volunteers will don “I’m a Bell Ringer” aprons and collect donations for the Salvation Army. The group of more than 20 that creates “Giving Dolls” help brighten the days of less fortunate children. Springmill residents give all year, but it is especially meaningful at this time of the year. The final event of the Springmill Holiday Season is the traditional New Year’s Eve celebration at the Clubhouse. A DJ keeps everyone on their feet and helps bring in the New Year
