The Calhoun Bull Evaluation Program is an educational program for southeastern cattlemen to serve as a basis for the comparison of their sires to those in the 84-day evaluation. The University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Animal and Dairy Science Department and the Northwest Georgia Research and Education Center manage the program in cooperation with the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association.

Sale Order

Sale begins at 12:30 pm. The order of the sale is determined by the index. The highest indexing bull sells first, and is followed in descending order, regardless of breed.

Viewing

Bulls will not be run through the ring on sale day, but will be penned at the sale sight for close inspection. A video of each bull will run during the auction. The videos will be available prior to the sale via a link on our website.

All persons who attend this sale do so at their own risk. The owners and sponsors assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for accidents of any nature.

Announcements

Announcements made from the auction box on sale day take precedence over the printed material in this catalog and all other announcements.

Sale Terms

•Each bull sells to the highest bidder.

•The auctioneer settles any dispute as to bids.

•The terms of the sale are cash or check.

•Each bull becomes the risk of the new owner as soon as sold in the auction ring. However, the staff takes every safety precaution until all cattle are loaded.

•Staff employees tend to bulls for a period of 24 hours after the sale.

•Buyers will receive a properly transferred certificate of registry at the consignor’s expense. Buyers that have not received certificates within 90 days of the sale should contact the sale management.

•Health certificates will be available on each bull sold. Buyers from states with special entry requirements should call 706-624-1403.

•All bulls will have a floor, selling no less than $2,500.

Eligibility for Sale

•All bulls are genomic tested with parent verification

•Top 2/3 in each breed

•Unruly/unsound bulls will not be sold

•Minimum yearling scrotal of 30 cm.

•Must pass breeding soundness exam

•Free of the following known genetic defects: AM, NH, CA, DD, OS and Dwarfism. The potential or carrier status of all bulls for newly identified genetic defects not listed above is disclosed in this sale catalog.

Bull Development Test Data Collection

Bulls were received on July 8, 2024. After a 21-day diet transition period, weights were taken at 0, 28, 56,and 84 days. Hip heights were recorded at 0 and 84 days.

Health and Fertility

Health is excellent. Bulls are thoroughly examined for physical soundness, and have passed a breeding soundness exam by a licensed veterinarian.

Ration and Care

Ultrasound Measurements

Bulls were scanned in accordance with the ILIA Lab procedures and interpretations. REA, IMF, and Fat adjustments were made to 365 days of age.

Genomic Enhanced EPDs

All bulls selling have had DNA submitted to their respective breed association for genomic evaluation and parentage verification. This increases the EPD accuracy to provide more certainty in decision making.

With high percentile ranking bulls for every trait measured, there will be bulls that meet your needs. These bulls have changed a lot since catalog pictures were taken back in September. Once you see them live or on the videos you are going to be impressed at how they have continued to stouten up. Please feel free to come walk through the bulls at the station, and sort through the videos.

There will be an educational program the evening before the sale at the NWGA Livestock Pavilion. Dr. Pedro Fontes will overview bull fertility and how bulls are evaluated for during a breeding soundness exam. Unlike in years past, registration is required at ugabeef.com. Over the last 27 years, Karen Rapp prepared the sale catalogs for the Calhoun Bull Test as well as organizing all the reports, mail-outs, bookkeeping, and many other duties for the UGA Live Animal Programs. She was also the administrative specialist for the Northwest Georgia Research and Education Center. Karen fought her battle with cancer valiantly. We miss her dearly, not only as a coworker, but as a friend and member of our UGA family here in Calhoun.
