AT A GLANCE: ATHLETICS
For several decades, St. Philip’s has provided arguably the largest and most diverse athletics program for 4- to 14-year-olds in the southern sector of Dallas.
Meet the Rogers: A South Dallas Basketball Dynasty
Championships have become a legacy for the Rogers family. Jerome Rogers, Sr., considered by many to be the best basketball player to come out of Madison High School, won a state championship in 1997. His daughter, Endyia, one of the top point guards in the country, led Bishop Lynch to two state championships. Most recently, in March, Jerome Jr. won a state championship for his father’s alma mater, Madison. “Dad’s a great role model and student of the game,” says Jerome, Jr., a sophomore at Madison High School.
One might say basketball is in this family’s blood but in truth, it all boils down to a copious concoction of talent, discipline, an incredible work ethic, and a big love for the game. In fact, it was not uncommon to find the Rogers trio running drills and practicing in St. Philip’s Legacy Gymnasium after school each day. Both Endyia and Jerome Jr. are alumni of St. Philip’s and were star players for St. Philip’s celebrated basketball team in elementary and middle school. Jerome Sr. was also a St. Philip's Saint as a child! Dad’s dedication and hard work is paying off for his children on the court and in the classroom. Endyia, who has a 4.0 GPA, is headed off to USC on a full athletic and academic ride, where she will play basketball for the esteemed university and begin her studies to become a doctor. She was also named Gatorade Player of the Year and through Gatorade’s Play it Forward program, St. Philip’s was awarded a $1,000 grant to help the next generation of St. Philip’s Saints. Jerome Jr., an honors student, will be a junior at Madison next year and hopes to lead his team to yet another championship. With this family, anything is possible!
The annual Paul “PBO” Bryson Invitational Basketball Classic, established over a decade ago in memory of one of St. Philip’s most dedicated parents and Community Center volunteers, was a tremendous success this year, raising over $2,000 in scholarship funds to support the education of children in South Dallas.
