South Dallas’ own Erykah Badu performed a private concert for St. Philip’s alumni in December to raise awareness of the alumni program and raise funds for our Alumni Endowment. Badu
attended St. Philip’s daycare as a child. “St. Philip’s has always been a light in my life, in South Dallas,” she shared during her hypnotic set. Also, her son, Seven, is an alumnus of the school. Many thanks to Murray Media for their support in pulling off this holiday treat!

Alumni Reap the Benefits of Studying Abroad

Maya Harris, Switzerland, Class of 2007
“This year, I’m taking part in a year-long chemical engineering exchange program in Switzerland. I’ve had a great time meeting new people, traveling, doing winter sports, practicing my French, and of course, studying. Coming to Switzerland for a year was easily one of the best choices I’ve made in my college career!”

Azaria Lanig, India, Class of 2007
I’m a junior at Goucher College in Baltimore studying Sociology with Social Justice concentration and 4+1 masters in Elementary Education. Presently, I am in India for a study abroad semester program on Sustainable Development and Social Change, administered by World Learning/School for International Training (SIT). I am also learning Hindi and live with a homestay in Jaipur to immerse myself. I love it!”
Class of 2000 News

Class of 2000 alumnus, Michael J. Sheffey Rawlings, recently earned his PHD in Material Science and Engineering from Northwestern University. In March, he served as a surprise speaker for SMU’s J. Erik Jonsson Ethics Award Luncheon, at which St. Philip’s Headmaster/ Executive Director, Dr. Terry Flowers, was honored. During his inspiring speech, he expressed his gratitude for his education at St. Philip’s and the man he deems as teacher, father figure, counselor, visionary leader, and friend. When asked to reflect on his St. Philip’s experience and the impact made on his life and education, he shared the following:
“When I came to St. Philip’s for kindergarten in the fall of 1993, it was immediately apparent, even to a small child, the plethora of warmth and love that filled the school. There was an air of excitement and inclusion that was infectious.
As I continued my matriculation, the coursework got harder but that feeling persisted throughout my time at St. Philip’s. Some of my teachers literally saved my academic life (Ms. Wesson, Mrs. Barjon and Ms. Joe). They laid the educational foundation that has become the bedrock of my academic achievements to date.
In addition to providing an excellent education and fertile, nurturing soil from which students could grow, St. Philip’s instilled and reinforced my home training with the daily faith practice of chapel, and a strong sense of pride in myself as a Black man to be. I know for sure that “if it is to be it is up to me!”
St. Philip’s will always hold a special place in my heart. And although I graduated as part of its inaugural 6th grade class in 2000, some sixteen years ago, I find myself still learning from the people there: how to teach, how to lead, how to love. Thank you, St. Philip’s!”
