Rugby team takes advantage of field availability

The Reds Rugby Club Display Big Hearts On and Off the Field

Rugby is the fastest growing team sport in the country and Dallas is no exception. Several months ago, one of the three area Division 1 men’s teams - Dallas RFC aka “The Reds” – began using St. Philip’s athletic field for their weekly practices. They found our field to have the perfect combination of availability, lighting, parking and ease of access. “But there was the added benefit of providing an opportunity for us to explore the development of a youth rugby program,” explains David Dodge, a Dallas lawyer and member of The Reds, a charter member of the Texas Rugby Football Union and a member of the USA Rugby Football Union.

The team has a long history of success on the field nationally and is working to establish a youth clinic this summer. Dodge believes they can leverage the interest they’ve already seen in St. Philip’s Pop Warner football players, some of whom have learned to play a touch version of rugby to get warmed up. Dallas currently has eight youth rugby teams. It’s exciting to have the prospect of a 9th team right here in South Dallas in the near future. “We also believe that teaching rugby tackling (which requires the tackling player to wrap up the opposing player) will increase the efficacy and safety of tackling in football, for those players who participate in both sports,” Dodge says.

Additionally, The Reds are always looking for a way to give back in gratitude for St. Philip’s generosity. Members have already rolled up their sleeves several times this school year to volunteer with the athletic field renovations last fall, the Thanksgiving Feast, the Holiday Toy Drive, and parking for the school’s Christmas Musical. According to Dodge, the team most enjoyed volunteering for St. Philip’s Night at 1600 – Learning Out Loud event.

“Interacting directly with the St. Philip’s students was incredibly rewarding for our players,” he explains. “We look forward to additional volunteer opportunities with the School and Community Center, and deepening the strength of the relationship between our two organizations.”
