Building an age friendly home BY LAIN & BARBARA CHAPPELL, OWNERS AT SOLID ROCK CUSTOM HOMES

Designing and building a custom home offers homeowners more than just the flexibility of creating a unique home that reflects their personal taste, it also allows them to create a home that can accommodate their lifestyle, wants and needs throughout their younger years, middle age, and elderly years. By incorporating “age friendly” concepts into the design of a custom home, homeowners have a greater chance of being able to enjoy, and remain in their homes, throughout each stage of their lives. Age friendly concepts are not geared strictly towards the elderly or disabled, as some may think, but they are design concepts used to making living and working spaces comfortable, safe and accessible for all, regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. Lever style handles, raised washers and dryers, doorways at least 36 inch wide, hard surface flooring with a non-slip finish and rocker style light switches are just a few examples of how age friendly concepts are incorporated into a home. Building final dream homes for clients of all ages is common ground for the team at Solid Rock Custom Homes. Utilizing age-friendly concepts in their custom homes is vital to ensuring their clients’ homes will support the lifestyles they are living when they move into the home, as well as 50 years down the road. As a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), Lain Chappell, owner of Solid Rock Custom Homes expressed

that unless they are dealing with a current handicap, most of their clients are not thinking along the lines of having to deal with future physical challenges when they come to us to design their final home. “It is our responsibility as a custom home builder, and aging in place specialist, to educate our clients regarding age friendly concepts. That is why our design team works closely with the homeowner during the design phase of the home to ensure that every age friendly concept is applied where they are wanted and needed by the homeowner,” states Mr. Chappell. When asked what aging in place concepts he would recommend implementing into a home, Mr. Chappell says, “Designing a home with a no-step entry or gradual grade to the front door, when possible, will allow for eased entry and future ramp application. Locating the master bedroom on a main level living space with a bathroom that is equipped with a curb-less shower for easy walkin or roll-in access, and outfitting the shower with a bench and grab bar, or with supports within the wall that can accommodate a future grab bar when needed, along with installing adequate lighting to light pathways and living areas are all smart, age friendly concepts that can appeal to all homeowners.” If you would like to learn more about how you can build an age friendly home with Solid Rock Custom Homes call 719-494-0932, or visit them at SolidRockCustomHomes.com. ■
