MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
Mike Murphy President and CEOAdvocacy stands as one of our fundamental pillars, integral to our mission statement. A pivotal aspect of this endeavor lies in cultivating relationships with elected officials and their teams. Events like our annual Washington D.C. Fly-In underscore this importance. This gathering not only provides opportunities to engage with elected representatives, briefing them on our future endeavors and updating them on ongoing initiatives, but also facilitates interactions with their Washington D.C. staff. Building rapport with these staff members significantly enhances the

likelihood of our requests receiving due consideration.
While we are fortunate to engage with federal elected officials throughout the year when they return to Springfield, their D.C. staff rarely accompany them on these visits. Therefore, the Fly-In serves as a crucial avenue for such interactions.
From May 6-8, eighteen local business and community leaders met with Senators Durbin and Duckworth, Representatives Miller and Budzinski, and their respective staff members. The Chamber, in collaboration with Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance, organized this event.
Prior to these meetings, a comprehensive briefing was provided by U.S. Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs personnel. During the sessions with elected officials, our group presented the 2024 Priority Funding Requests for the City of Springfield and Sangamon County, meticulously prepared by the Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance. These discussions allowed us to underscore the significance of these projects and their

enduring impact on our community.
The engagement between elected officials, their staff, and our local stakeholders was remarkably constructive. Meaningful inquiries were made, and the conversations remained positive throughout. While our elected officials field numerous requests from various communities, our group was commended for its adept representation of our area’s interests. I eagerly anticipate continued collaboration with elected officials at all levels to further enhance Springfield’s appeal as a vibrant business hub.

ANNUAL SMALL BUSINESS AWARDS
HARD WORK OF SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS RECOGNIZED
Small business owners often start with a dream and a lot of hard work. The Chamber’s Small Business Awards Luncheon provided an opportunity to recognize that hard work and acknowledge the entrepreneurial spirit and dedication of 46 business owners or not-for-profit directors, which are representing 37 different nominated organizations.
Presented by Hickory Point Bank, The Chamber recognizes area small business owners for their outstanding achievements in four different categories:
• Not-For-Profit Director of the Year
• New & Emerging Business Owner of the Year
• Small Business Owner of the Year
• Lifetime Award Business Owner of the Year.
Nearly 500 small business owners have been recognized at this event over the past 38 years.
The work of small business owners is critical for our local economy and community. Over 80% of our Chamber membership consists of small businesses with less than 25 full-time employees. This year’s nominees are highlighted in this edition of the Update. The award recipients in each category will be recognized in the August Update.

FILL YOUR OPEN POSITIONS
THROUGH CHAMBER JOB FAIR, JOB BOARD
Members of The Chamber, like other businesses nationally, are seeing unprecedented staffing shortages. The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce has two resources to assist members with filling their positions with quality candidates.
The Chamber will hold a Job Fair on Tuesday, August 27 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Springfield Convention Center. The event will be promoted via print, radio, and social media extensively to bring quality candidates in front of employers. Companies frequently report high satisfaction with their results from Chamber job fair events, including strengthening their talent pool and/or hiring new employees.
The event will be promoted via LinkedIn and Facebook, and The Chamber is also partnering with the Land of Lincoln Workforce Alliance at Illinois workNet Center and other workforce partners to promote the event to job seekers. Members can secure a booth for $175 when registering online at www.gscc.org by July 30. After that date, the rate increases to $250.
The Chamber also has a Job Board that is a resource for members as part of their Chamber investment. Postings reside on The
Chamber website, www.gscc.org, and are also posted to The Chamber’s Facebook page. To post a job, login to the Member Information Center. If you don’t know your login credentials, contact the Chamber at admin@gscc.org.

STATE RETIREMENT PLAN MANDATE
PLANS REQUIRED FOR EMPLOYERS WITH 5+ EMPLOYEES
Last November, Illinois state law began requiring Illinois employers with five or more full-time and/or part-time (FT/PT) employees to offer their own retirement program, either through a private plan or through Illinois Secure Choice, a retirement program offered through the Illinois State Treasurer’s office.
Employers who do not comply with the law are subject to fines and penalties as described in 820 ILCS 80/85. Employers are not required to contribute financially to these programs.
Employers that meet the following criteria must comply with the law:
• Employ five (5) or more FT and/or PT employees
• Business operating at least two years
• Currently do not offer a qualified saving plan such as a 401(k), SEP IRA, or Simple IRA
The Chamber offers an alternative to Secure Choice called Signature Fiduciary Connect by John Hancock, which offers small to mid-size companies a simple, flexible and easy to administer plan. BOS Investment Services serves as a financial advisor for the plan.
Regardless of whether your business selects a private plan or Illinois Secure Choice, it is important that your business is compliant with the law to avoid the fines and penalties.
If you have questions about this requirement and/or Signature Fiduciary Connect, go to www.gscc.org/retirement-program or contact Mike Murphy at mmurphy@gscc.org or 217-525-1173 ext. 205.
