MESSAGE FROM THE CEO A LOOK BACK AT 2023 will last for decades, and organized and participated in community service events that help make our community a great place to live. The program will be expanded in 2024 with the creation of a new staff position to lead the program. More can be found about this on page 8.

Mike Murphy President and CEO The end of the year provides staff at The Chamber with the opportunity to reflect on what has transpired over the last twelve months. When I look back on The Chamber’s body of work in 2023, I am proud of what we have accomplished.

Starting with the establishment of our Young Professionals group, RISE Springfield, this group of young emerging leaders has accomplished a lot in a short period of time.

They had several professional development events that will help them grow as leaders, fun networking events that will be the start of business and personal relationships that

The Chamber also established a business scholarship at University of Illinois Springfield that was awarded to two students attending UIS. I look forward to growing this endeavor and expanding it to Lincoln Land Community College in the near future.

This year’s Leadership Springfield class of 41 participants attended 14 sessions to further develop their leadership skills. They also worked in teams on projects for seven local not-for-profit agencies. I encourage your company to send someone through the 2024 Class, as we continue to receive accolades from participants and others involved with the program.

The Chamber events were outstanding this year, including the first ever State of Greater Springfield, where we heard from our newly elected Mayor Buscher and County Chairman

Van Meter. The Small Business Awards highlighted 38 businesses that do amazing things for our community. The Corporate Cup Challenge included two fun days and some serious competition from the 54 participating teams. Thirty-two elected officials attended our Elected Officials Reception, which gave our members an opportunity to get to know those whose decisions affect our businesses. Two Job Fairs provided opportunities for members of our community to improve their lives with a great employment position. Our Coffee & Connections and Chamber on Tap events provided a casual environment to network and connect with fellow businesses in our community. Finally, our Shoes, Brew & Biz was an informative, tasty, and fun night that has grown to be a must attend event for our community.

Looking towards 2024, I am excited about building on these accomplishments, and all of us at The Chamber will be ready to take on any challenges we might face in the next twelve months and beyond.

RETIREMENT PLAN MANDATE

RISE SPRINGFIELD PROGRAM

EMPLOYERS WITH 5 OR MORE EMPLOYEES NEW STAFF POSITION CREATED Employers with 5 employees or more are now required to offer a retirement program. They can choose to enroll in the Illinois Secure Choice program offered by the Illinois State Treasurer or set up a 401(k) or a Simple IRA plan for their employees.

Effective January 1, Jasmine Dickerson will serve as the Young Professionals Program Manager, a new position created to expand The Chamber’s young professional program, RISE Springfield.

The Chamber has researched alternatives and is offering a member benefit, Signature Fiduciary Connect by John Hancock, which offers small to mid-size companies a simple, flexible and easy to administer 401(k) plan. This option allows employers greater control of their plan and there are federal tax credits available to help offset the administrative costs.

All employers that participate in a plan other than Illinois Secure Choice must register with the Illinois State Treasurer office to confirm compliance with the law. To do so, go to https://employer.ilsecurechoice.com/ illinoisertpl/enroll/createEmp/viewCollectEmpPreRegDetails.cs.

Regardless of what option is chosen, it is important that your business is compliant with the law to avoid fines ($250/employee) and penalties.

Jasmine will oversee the dayto-day operations of RISE and provide support to its committee and subcommittees.

She has served as The Chamber’s Administrative Assistant since January, working on Board relations, events, communications, and operations.

Jasmine attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and while there served 3 years as the manager and videographer for its Men’s Soccer Team. She is currently pursuing her Project Management Professional (PMP) licensing and plans to return to college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business.

The AHP is geared towards small-to-mid sized businesses, allowing them to gain the buying power of a larger employer when it comes to their healthcare options, including exposure to benefit plan choices currently unavailable to traditional small group employers.
