Take some time to plan your trip, budget your finances, and cut back on unnecessary expenditures during the weeks and days before your trip.

Before and during Spring Break, consider these moneysaving tips: Book With the Hotel Directly

There are a number of companies that are dedicated to student travel. Booking with these companies consist of you paying a middle-man fee. Booking directly with the hotel, however, means you’re cutting that middle-man fee out. Most hotels offer the opportunity to book online – so all you really need is a credit card and you’re set!

If you have to buy clothes, sunglasses, sunblock or other common tourist items once you reach your destination, you will pay much more than you would have at home. Make a list before you go!

Gas isn’t cheap, but driving to your destination is much less expensive than flying. If you’re traveling with friends, you can all pitch in for gas. 14

Pack Everything You Need

Meals out can be one of the largest – and most underestimated – expense on a multi-day vacation. Bring a cooler along and shop for food that’s ready to eat at grocery stores. Most of the spring break destinations offer students a discount party pass which usually includes free cover and happy hour specials at various bars, clubs and restaurants. For example, Panama City Beach offers the Panmaniac Club Card. Daytona Beach and South Padre Island have their own discount card programs too.

SPRING BREAK BEAUTY if you’ve hit the panic button and are worried about how you’re going to look in a bikini, now might be the right time to start practicing the following advice.

In the last weeks before your big getaway, there are a few things one can do to be beach-body ready in no time, even if the winter blues still have you feeling less-than-confident. The main motto of Spring Break beauty is worry and stress-free, because how you look in pictures should be the least of your concerns as you relax and enjoy the beach views – sipping on a mai tai, of course. Getting that sunny glow is something most people aren’t naturally born with. Using a gradual self-tanner and exfoliating regularly can help skin look glowing. This would also be the time to hit the gym as much as possible. Squeeze in as many workouts as you can, and watch what you eat for the next few weeks, particularly salty foods that cause bloating. Above all, don’t resort to crazy diets or cleanses that promise to help you shed weight fast; eating and drinking less than usual will only cause your body to cling to the nutrients it has and go into “starvation mode”, which

means it won’t be burning the calories you consume and it will hold on to weight. Spring Break is usually pretty synonymous with having an all-around blast in skimpy clothes, so hair and makeup should be as natural and fuss-free as possible during your trip. Let your hair go natural or add a slight wave (which could also work in your favor if humidity strikes!), and use as little makeup as possible to keep from looking like a huge oil slick. This way you won’t have to worry about getting wet and your makeup smearing down your face. If you have good scenery and good friends, there’s no need to overanalyze what you look like, but rather about feeling your best and making the most of your memorable trip.

MANAGING YOUR MONEY as a Student

It may seem that no matter how responsible you act, money disappears faster than ice cream during finals week. Weekly grocery shopping, morning coffee, drinks out with friends – they all contribute to evaporating your cash in seconds. Everyone wants to spend their money wisely, but sometimes that doesn’t mean refraining from spending any money ever. So instead of turning down a night out with your friends, just follow these tips and tricks. You won’t let your empty wallet control you ever again. ALWAYS SEEK DISCOUNTS Don’t let your fears of talking to people prohibit you from pulling out your student ID. They’ve all been there. See if you can get a buck or two knocked off an entrance fee or an extra round of appetizers for the table. Also, try branching out. Grab the weird on-sale wheat bread the next time you grocery shop instead of your usual classic baguette. Why not? You might just find a new favorite! BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD Just because you got paid yesterday doesn’t mean you should go all out tonight and splurge. When you go out, bring cash. If you leave your credit card at home, you can’t overspend. PLAN IT OUT During the age of online banking and apps for literally everything, you don’t need to be an accountant to make yourself a budget. You can easily join programs to set aside money for different aspects of your life. Set goals for your month. If you’re not sure how to start budgeting and what numbers will work for you, take a look at what you currently spend (ie: groceries, fixed bills etc). What’s left over is either savings or money to spend on that night out with friends. TRACK YOUR SPENDING Although tedious, this will help you get a feel for where your money goes. When you see it all written out it’s much easier to tell how you’re doing.

ASK YOURSELF: WOULD I USE THIS? Before you commit to a purchase, make sure you don’t just want or “need” it, but that you’ll use it. You might not need that new purse, but will you use it tomorrow? What about the day after? Next week? If you’ll use or wear the item equal to or more than every dollar you spent on it you’ll not only save money, but you’ll feel good about what you bought. TAKE SHORTCUTS Once familiar with your budget, it’s easier to see where you spend the most money. Ask yourself, can you live without what you’re spending the most on? Instead of eating out or meeting friends out, invite them to your place for a cooking party. Even making your own drinks at home can save tons. While this may not be the option for you, renting a bike for a month or walking to class instead of driving can cut down on gas and monthly metro card costs. HOLD ONTO YOUR COINS Yes, that beautiful vase full of pennies is actually worth something. Even if at the end of all your collecting it’s only $5, that’s $5 you can guiltlessly spend on that amazing bakery you salivate past on your way home every day. Quarters seem like nothing, but they add up so fast. By using your change to leave yourself with dollars instead of random coins, you also feel richer.

SOCIAL MEDIA THE HARD TRUTH Ego-boosting, self-esteem, validation, praise, happiness, and sense of worth. They’re all words to describe feelings we yearn for. Sadly, for many throughout the past decade or so, these feelings seem to only get achieved through the use of social media.

Most of us are guilty of using social media as a method of ego-boosting. Often times we turn to it to reestablish our sense of worth, resulting in an almost instant gratification. Whether it is through posting a selfie in the gym, changing a profile picture after a haircut, or typing a funny tweet—most of us use social media as a form of validation in one way or another. But the real question is: How long does this “high” last? And what are the effects of this addictive temporary “healing”? It feels great to be praised and acknowledged by social media. That recognition and happiness may last for several hours or even days. The truth is, however, that the happiness is very temporary. And once it subsides, you’re left wanting that high again. It can be argued that not everyone uses social media for these purposes. Maybe you’re merely proud of your homemade chicken curry dish and want to share with the world, or maybe you worked hard to land your dream job and feel excited to announce it. But where do we draw the line? When does this go sour? Do we really need to know that you’ve decided to go on a healthy food diet, or that you’ve gained 25 extra pounds of muscle? Do people really care? We turn to social media as a method of coping, and this can be 58

both a great and horrible thing. In times of loss, it can be a powerful way for others to show support. But in another sense, it can be a way for people to seek attention that isn’t real. The virtual attention often doesn’t translate to reality. The same person that says “I’m so sorry! I am here if you ever need to talk!” in an Instagram comment might not follow up with that offer face to face. Often there is a pressure to be positive in social media spaces. People often portray themselves on social media as happy, well-off and successful, but many aren’t honest. The solution to ending this vicious cycle of seeking constant validation over social media begins with being honest with yourself—being honest with your feelings, thoughts, and desires. Identify the truth behind your social media connection and realize it. If you feel you use social media for attention, take a step back and think about how long the satisfaction lasts and if it really fulfills the gratification you sought. We don’t need social media to discover and identify our self-worth. If you struggle to find it, it’s not waiting for you on the internet. It’s waiting for you in your friends and family. And really, do you honestly care what Susie did on Friday night or how hot she looks? Do we actually think that we need to gain approval from others on how we live our life? Will that end up making a real difference in the end?
