YOUR GUIDE TO SPRING BREAK! FOR OVER 75 YEARS, the college Spring Break getaway has been an American tradition. In 1936, Fort Lauderdale, Florida became the first Spring Break destination. When MTV decided to film their inaugural Spring Break special from DAYTONA BEACH in 1986, a new hot spot was established, and up to 200,000 students began to flock to the Daytona scene year after year. Today, Florida still stands as the number one destination— specifically PANAMA CITY BEACH, which has become widely regarded as the ‘Spring Break Capital of the World’, hosting more than half a million students each year! SOUTH PADRE ISLAND offers students an affordable alternative to Florida Spring Breaking. Close to 150,000 students visit this Texas destination each year, making it a popular place to be each March. The perfect weather of LAKE HAVASU, ARIZONA has made this popular tourist destination a vibrant Spring Break scene, equipped with all the amenities which have students taking notice.

PLAN NOW PARTY LATER With winter in full gear, you may find yourself daydreaming about relaxing on a sunny beach without a care in the world. Be sure that your spring break vacation will be as perfect as you imagine, and make your travel arrangements today. Fortunately, Spring Break is just around the corner, which means planning for your getaway should start sooner rather than later. For most college students, finding the right trip means not breaking the bank, so starting early is key in order to find the best deals for your budget. Besides taking on a few more hours at your campus job, start by talking to your friends about what kind of trip they’d want to take. Near or far? Beach or otherwise? You also all need to have a candid conversation about money, and how much you are willing to spend and not spend. The trip you plan should try to accommodate as much as possible without going overboard, but be prepared to spend a little more than you’d like for erroneous expenses 12

you might have forgotten about. Websites like pcbeachspringbreak.com and dbspringbreak.com offer student-geared pricing on hotels and information on events that is extremely helpful. Some of the most popular Spring Break destinations like Panama City Beach, South Padre Island, and Daytona Beach are often booked quickly, so the earlier you start the better! Whatever plans are made for Spring Break, this time should be used as a respite from school to recharge, let loose and prepare yourself for the second half of the spring semester. Whether your destination is warm or cold, spring break is a week to look forward to, either as a distraction from winter or a preparation for spring.

O S O E S H T THE G N I G R N P I S SPR t has defined a th c si u M e h T : E From MTV to UM f Spring Break three decades o

Music has been a definitive part of the Spring Break experience for 30 years. Spring Break’s first real major foray into live music began in 1986 when MTV decided to make their presence known to the world on the shores of Daytona Beach, Florida with a massive beach concert featuring some of the hottest national pop music performers. It was such a success, MTV came back several more times and played everything from Pop Rock to Hip Hop. In 1987, the Beastie Boys concert officially signalled that beach concerts were going to be synonymous with Spring Break. And in 1990 when Hip Hop hit the beach with MC Hammer, live MTV style concerts were definitely going to be the key to any Spring Break destination’s success. When MTV transitioned to Lake Havasu, Arizona in 1995 and then Panama City Beach, Florida in ’96 and ‘97 – which featured Gwen Stefani and No Doubt and the Spice Girls – there was no denying that pop music was what ruled the beach. Then MTV returned to Panama City Beach in 2006 and then again in ’08 and ’09, solidifying northwest Florida’s place atop the Spring Break destination chart as the place to be each

16

year. During that time, Rap was back, and concerts featured Lil Wayne, Drake, and 50 Cent. But it was also the beginning of the Luke Bryan and country music era. While country music was becoming the main focal point in Panama City Beach (in addition to Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Cole Swindell, and Kenny Chesney were top highlights), South Padre Island, Texas was ushering in a new live concert music program for spring breakers. The Ultimate Music Experience (or just UME for short) focussed on EDM (electric dance music) which was taking the world by storm with its fast energy beats and exciting rhythms. David Guetta and Tiesto headlined the first UME in 2011 at the Schlitterbahn Beach Water Park in South Padre Island. In the years following, Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Avicii, and Steve Aoki have all performed. Even Panama City Beach has adopted the EDM vibe, showcasing talents including Diplo, Kaskade, Dada Life and Aoki at the Beach Bash Music Fest. It’s hard to imagine Spring Break without live music. Whether it’s Pop performances, Hip Hop, EDM, or Country, there’s enough happening now at pretty much any hot destination for everyone to enjoy. As they say, variety is the spice of life, and when it comes to Spring Break and music, variety has been the secret to success!

GOING This spring, college students will be faced with the decision of whether or not to become a Potential New Member (PNM) of a sorority or fraternity—a.k.a. “Going Greek.” If you become involved in a Greek organization, you will come to realize the membership within a Sorority or Fraternity is more about building relationships and creating networks than it is about organized partying (although there is usually a lot of that, too!). Greek organizations are commited not only to social engagements, but also to fundraising for reputible organizations, as well as academic excellence. How does one know if the Greek life is the right way to go? Before rushing into the decision, consider that there are usually multiple Greek organizations on campus, and they’re all very different. The first group you meet may not necessarily be the right fit for you, so be patient and selective. Ask questions and learn about the different Fraternity/Sorority houses before making your decision. Remember that not all organizations are free. Some have a one-time fee, while others collect dues every semester. There can also be a initiation fee, and don’t forget that social outings aren’t free! Ultimately you want to be yourself throughout the process. Share your interests and explain what you are looking for in an organization. Don’t commit on the spot and don’t feel pressured into making your decision. This is about you and the role you will take moving forward in your college career. Good luck!

WEAR SUNSCREEN: Returning home tanned is great, but coming home cancer-free is better. Use the lotion! Re-apply every three hours—the sun is most intense mid-day, the time when you’ll most likely be on the beach. water and

RESPECT YOUR HOTEL: Inspect your hotel room upon check-in and report any damage immediately. Do not hang out on the balconies of the hotel after partying. Do not damage any hotel property, including your room. Do NOT remove your hotel wristband as they are used by secu- rity for guest identification and hotel access purposes.

TIPS FOR

TV BINGING You’ve decided to watch the show that is currently obsessing your social circles. One episode quickly turns into two, two turns into three and by the time you come up for air, it’s 3am. To top it off, that test that seemed so far away is now in five hours! Do you study, sleep or finish those last 20 minutes of episode six?

ALWAYS PLAN: Spread out your episodes amongst your free time. If you generally foresee a free evening in your future, plan to finish up those last few episodes of season two and maybe start season three? WATCH WITH A FRIEND: A friend should be there to remind you (or for you to remind them) to press pause and go to the library so you can finish researching that term paper (as silly as that sounds). SET LIMITS: As a human being with physical, psychological and emotional needs, you must realize that when 46

you press play and you’re telling yourself “just one episode” you are realistically going to sit through at least two episodes. REWARD YOURSELF: Sitting in your bed with your laptop for a whole weekend finishing up season two of House of Cards sounds like a great idea, but it’s really not. Be productive. Finish your work or do some solid studying and you’ll find yourself in a good place when you resume your show. You don’t have to sacrifice your sacred TV shows and marathons, you just have to learn how to manage them and intertwine them within your day to day life.

Spring Break 2016 53

K A E R B G SPRIN

E H T T A S E I V O M the s t i s i v e r d Hollywoo in e m e h t k a e Spring Br pa’ d n a r G y t ‘Dir

It’s getting close to that time of year when college students look forward to getting away and enjoying some beach and sun for Spring Break. When it comes to movies, Hollywood has done a pretty good job of creating the “ideal” image of Spring Break, but not necessarily an image that should be taken too seriously. In 2013 Selena Gomez and James Franco starred in dark comedy Spring Breakers about a group of girls on Spring Break in Florida. Their (mis)-adventures take them down a dark path that no student should try and replicate. In 2010, the comedy horror Piranha 3D portrayed Spring Break’s beach party excess at great lengths, complete with big stages, loud music and yes, plenty of girls in bikinis. Minus the killer piranhas, this movie might be considered pretty accurate. The newest film in the Spring Break genre to be released on January 22, 2016 is Dirty Grandpa, and it features an all-star cast led by none other than Robert DeNiro and Zack Efron. This crazy R-rated comedy is about Jason (Efron), an uptight lawyer who is one week away from marrying his boss’s controlling daughter. Tricked by his grandfather Dick (De Niro), Jason finds himself driving the foulmouthed old man to Daytona Beach, FL., for a wild Spring Break that includes frat parties, bar fights and an epic night of karaoke. While Jason worries about the upcoming wedding, Dick tries to show his grandson how to live life to the fullest. The film looks hilarious, and should be box office winner, proving that Hollywood still can’t seem to get enough of Spring Break and its raucous behaviour. With college Spring Break starting less than a month after the release of this movie, it’s sure to spark interest in the top Spring Break destinations, including Daytona Beach, Panama City Beach, South Padre Island and Lake Havasu. 54

GET FIT FOR SPR NG BREAK

In order to be bikini-ready for Spring Break, you swore you’d hit the gym hard every day and eat right…but it never happened. Have no fear! We’ve got a few healthy tips to help you slim down in just a few weeks! EXERCISE: In these weeks before your trip, you should switch up your normal cardio routine. According to Kevin Schultz, director of strength and conditioning at Carnegie Mellon, rather than just spending your usual 60 minutes on the elliptical, you should “do repeat high intensity bouts with short rest periods.”Go hard for 10-30 seconds with 10-30 second breaks. Repeat this 10-20 times for a set. Do up to 3 or 4 sets with a 5-10 minute rest period in between each set. This cardio plan can be done on the bike, treadmill, elliptical or stair master…so mix it up! However, you can use it on strength machines too and incorporate both strength and cardio into your workout if you have time. Just keep in mind that you tend to burn more calories in a high intensity 10-minute interval than at a low intensity 30-minute interval.

DIET:We all know the usual tips: avoid bloating by not consuming fried foods or salty foods. Don’t eat sweets, etc. Schultz suggests drinking 2 cups of coffee or tea a day (which should be a breeze for sleep-deprived college students) as it will help with fat oxidation, i.e., will help boost your metabolism. Just be careful not to add too

many extras to your drink, like cream, sugar, and flavor shots!

EAT BOTH PROTEINS AND CARBS: Meals and snacks with protein as well as complex carbohydrates are desirable for weight loss. Consider a veggie burger on a whole grain bun with lettuce and tomato or a bean burrito with salsa and lettuce to take with you on the go. EAT FREQUENTLY: Eating every 3-5 hours will keep the hunger pains away and you will be able to stay focused and on task. Remember, overly restrictive diets tend to keep your mind focused on FOOD and not your next task, and can lead to binge eating later. BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS: Have breakfast within an hour of getting up. 6 oz of yogurt and a ½ cup of multi-grain cereal is a great way to get both the carbs and protein you need. How about an English muffin sandwich? Or wholewheat toast with a teaspoon of peanut butter, an apple and some yogurt? OR AT LEAST DRINK SOMETHING IN THE A.M.: If you are not an early morning eater then consider drinking in the nutrition with a yogurt smoothie, or skim milk latte. Something is always better than nothing.

Remember everything is best in moderation, in terms of BOTH diet and exercise. Don’t go too far to one extreme. This is your Spring Break—go out and have fun!

Stay Cool

PUT THE GUIDE IN YOUR POCKET!

This Spring Break No one likes a show-off. Even less-liked are people who behave without selfresepect in public. Spring Break should be a time for fun, but not a time for reputation-killing disasters.

DRESS TO IMPRESS Research current fashions and work them on the beach! Ditch the stained t-shirts, dumpy bathing suits, ill-fitted trunks and nasty jeans. USE THE SUNSCREEN NOBODY is immune to the Florida sun. Don’t be that guy walking around looking like a lobster or — worse yet — at the hospital with sun poisoning. LEARN A BEACH ACTIVITY If you’re asked to play volleyball with a good-looking bunch of Spring Breakers, it will help to know how to play. If volleyball isn’t your thing, learn another social game so you won’t be left out of the fun! DON’T BE A LUSH An obnoxious drunk is not cool. Being a sloppy mess isn’t attractive. Enjoy yourself, but don’t be the annoying, irresposible one in your group — your friends will tire of babysitting, and others will only gossip. HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR There’s nothing like making people laugh to make a good impression. Everyone loves the funny one! But don’t overdo it — know when to change the subject, and never tell jokes that could be offensive to new friends. 62

PRING BREAK ON A BUDGET Going on a Spring Break trip doesn’t have to be an occasion that will break the bank. If you’re vigilant about saving money, you can have a great spring break, without going broke. Take some time to plan your trip, budget your finances, and cut back on unnecessary expenditures during the weeks and days before your trip.

Gas isn’t cheap, but driving to your destination is much less expensive than flying. If you’re traveling with friends, you can all pitch in for gas.

Pack Everything You Need

If you have to buy clothes, sunglasses, sunblock or other common tourist items once you reach your destination, you will pay much more than you would have at home. Make a list before you go!

Bring Your Student ID

Before and during spring break, consider these money-saving tips:

Carrying your student ID can be very advantageous. Many clubs, restaurants, and attractions offer student discounts.

Book With the Hotel Directly

Get Groceries

There are a number of companies that are dedicated to student travel. Booking with these companies consist of you paying a middle-man fee. Booking directly with the hotel, however, means you’re cutting that middle-man fee out. Most hotels offer the opportunity to book online – so all you really need is a credit card and you’re set!

Budget Accordingly

When considering your budget it is important to prepare for the unexpected, so assume everything will cost ten percent more than you’re expecting. 68

Road Trip

Meals out can be one of the largest – and most underestimated – expense on a multi-day vacation. Bring a cooler along and shop for food that’s ready to eat at grocery stores.

Discount Card Programs

Most of the spring break destinations offer students a discount party pass which usually includes free cover and happy hour specials at various bars, clubs and restaurants. For example, Panama City Beach offers the Panmaniac Club Card. Daytona Beach and South Padre Island have their own discount card programs too.
