YOUR GUIDE TO SPRING BREAK! FOR OVER 75 YEARS, the college Spring Break getaway has been an American tradition. In 1936, Fort Lauderdale, Florida became the first Spring Break destination. When MTV decided to film their inaugural Spring Break special from DAYTONA BEACH in 1986, a new hot spot was established, and up to 200,000 students began to flock to the Daytona scene year after year. Today, Florida still stands as the number one destination— specifically PANAMA CITY BEACH, which has become widely regarded as the ‘Spring Break Capital of the World’, hosting more than half a million students each year! SOUTH PADRE ISLAND offers students an affordable alternative to Florida Spring Breaking. Close to 150,000 students visit this Texas destination each year, making it a popular place to be each March. The perfect weather of LAKE HAVASU, ARIZONA has made this popular tourist destination a vibrant Spring Break scene, equipped with all the amenities which have students taking notice.

SPRING BREAK SURVIVAL GUIDE SPRING BREAK 2017 SPRING BREAK IS A BREAK FROM CLASSES, JOBS, AND STRESS—BUT IT ISN’T A BREAK FROM COMMON SENSE! COME HOME FEELING LIKE IT WAS THE BEST WEEK OF YOUR LIFE; KEEP THESE POINTS IN MIND:
USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM: Hang out in groups and ALWAYS use the buddy system. Never allow a friend to leave a party alone. Always travel with a buddy in a taxi, bus, or public transportation. If you lose your buddy, ask a proper authority to escort you home.
TRANSPORTATION: Check with the hotel front desk for guidance on the cheapest, easiest, and most reliable transportation. Use only licensed taxis and limos, and negotiate the fare before entering hired vehicles. Always travel with a buddy.
WEAR SUNSCREEN: Returning home tanned is great, but coming home cancer-free is better. Use the lotion! Re-apply every three hours—the sun is most intense mid-day, the time when you’ll most likely be on the beach. water and
RESPECT YOUR HOTEL: Inspect your hotel room upon check-in and report any damage immediately. Do not hang out on the balconies of the hotel after partying. Do not damage any hotel property, including your room. Do NOT remove your hotel wristband as they are used by secu- rity for guest identification and hotel access purposes.
DRINK RESPONSIBLY:Know your limit. Note the amount of drinks per hour you are consuming. Do NOT accept drinks from strangers. Do not carry open containers of alcohol in the street.
BEACH SAFETY: Do NOT swim in the Gulf/Ocean at night. You’ll be swimming at your own risk if a lifeguard isn’t on duty. Follow all beach patrol warnings. Pay attention to flags or posted markers on the beach that are used to warn you about dangerous tides, harsh water conditions.
DRINK WATER!: Staying hydrated can keep you from getting sick, losing your voice, and prevents sun stroke.
HAVE FUN!: This is your vacation and it should be stress free.
BEACH BASH SPRING BREAK’S #1 DAYTIME EVENT
MUSIC FEST: NOW AT 3 DESTINATIONS!
Spring Break’s ultimate beach concert event stands out among other daytime parties as the one place to be at in March, and it’s now a major stop at three Spring Break destinations! It is here that popular national music acts are able to perform to massive crowds on Spring Break’s largest beach stage. Sponsors are able to present their brands to thousands of students in the hopes of attracting a captive consumer audience, and all within a safe, fun and friendly environment. Some of the biggest names and acts in pop culture have performed, including country music sensations Florida Georgia Line, Cole Swindell, and Brett Eldridge. EDM has been on the rise in the last half decade, and crowd pleasing performers including Steve Aoki, Diplo, Kaskade and The Chainsmokers have all drawn huge crowds. It’s no wonder that since 2013, the Beach Bash Music Fest has seen major increases in attendance, breaking records year after year. Now a highlight event at three major spring break destinations, including Panama City Beach, Florida, South Padre Island, Texas, and now Daytona Beach, Florida, the Beach Bash Music Fest is expanding in popularity, attracting even more top talent and continues to deliver on its “number one daytime beach event” mantra. Information on the 2017 Beach Bash Music Fest concerts, at all three destinations listed, including early-bird tickets sales and VIP information, is available at the official website at beachbashmusicfest.com.
PRING BREAK ON A BUDGET Going on a Spring Break trip doesn’t have to be an occasion that will break the bank. If you’re vigilant about saving money, you can have a great spring break, without going broke. Take some time to plan your trip, budget your finances, and cut back on unnecessary expenditures during the weeks and days before your trip.
Before and during Spring Break, consider these moneysaving tips: Book With the Hotel Directly
There are a number of companies that are dedicated to student travel. Booking with these companies consist of you paying a middle-man fee. Booking directly with the hotel, however, means you’re cutting that middle-man fee out. Most hotels offer the opportunity to book online – so all you really need is a credit card and you’re set!
If you have to buy clothes, sunglasses, sunblock or other common tourist items once you reach your destination, you will pay much more than you would have at home. Make a list before you go!
Bring Your Student ID
Carrying your student ID can be very advantageous. Many clubs, restaurants, and attractions offer student discounts.
Discount Card Programs
When considering your budget it is important to prepare for the unexpected, so assume everything will cost ten percent more than you’re expecting.
Gas isn’t cheap, but driving to your destination is much less expensive than flying. If you’re traveling with friends, you can all pitch in for gas. 14
Pack Everything You Need
Meals out can be one of the largest – and most underestimated – expense on a multi-day vacation. Bring a cooler along and shop for food that’s ready to eat at grocery stores. Most of the spring break destinations offer students a discount party pass which usually includes free cover and happy hour specials at various bars, clubs and restaurants. For example, Panama City Beach offers the Panmaniac Club Card. Daytona Beach and South Padre Island have their own discount card programs too.

How to be a
SPRING BREAK BEAUTY if you’ve hit the panic button and are worried about how you’re going to look in a bikini, now might be the right time to start practicing the following advice.
In the last weeks before your big getaway, there are a few things one can do to be beach-body ready in no time, even if the winter blues still have you feeling less-than-confident. The main motto of Spring Break beauty is worry and stress-free, because how you look in pictures should be the least of your concerns as you relax and enjoy the beach views – sipping on a mai tai, of course. Getting that sunny glow is something most people aren’t naturally born with. Using a gradual self-tanner and exfoliating regularly can help skin look glowing. This would also be the time to hit the gym as much as possible. Squeeze in as many workouts as you can, and watch what you eat for the next few weeks, particularly salty foods that cause bloating. Above all, don’t resort to crazy diets or cleanses that promise to help you shed weight fast; eating and drinking less than usual will only cause your body to cling to the nutrients it has and go into “starvation mode”, which
means it won’t be burning the calories you consume and it will hold on to weight. Spring Break is usually pretty synonymous with having an all-around blast in skimpy clothes, so hair and makeup should be as natural and fuss-free as possible during your trip. Let your hair go natural or add a slight wave (which could also work in your favor if humidity strikes!), and use as little makeup as possible to keep from looking like a huge oil slick. This way you won’t have to worry about getting wet and your makeup smearing down your face. If you have good scenery and good friends, there’s no need to overanalyze what you look like, but rather about feeling your best and making the most of your memorable trip.

PUT THE GUIDE IN YOUR POCKET!
This Spring Break
No one likes a show-off. Even less-liked are people who behave without selfresepect in public. Spring Break should be a time for fun, but not a time for reputation-killing disasters.
DRESS TO IMPRESS Research current fashions and work them on the beach! Ditch the stained t-shirts, dumpy bathing suits, ill-fitted trunks and nasty jeans.
USE THE SUNSCREEN NOBODY is immune to the Florida sun. Don’t be that guy walking around looking like a lobster or — worse yet — at the hospital with sun poisoning.
LEARN A BEACH ACTIVITY If you’re asked to play volleyball with a good-looking bunch of Spring Breakers, it will help to know how to play. If volleyball isn’t your thing, learn another social game so you won’t be left out of the fun!
DON’T BE A LUSH An obnoxious drunk is not cool. Being a sloppy mess isn’t attractive. Enjoy yourself, but don’t be the annoying, irresposible one in your group — your friends will tire of babysitting, and others will only gossip.
HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR There’s nothing like making people laugh to make a good impression. Everyone loves the funny one! But don’t overdo it — know when to change the subject, and never tell jokes that could be offensive to new friends. 22

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND Everything’s Bigger in Texas!
AT A GLANCE •P adre Island is the longest barrier island in the United States •S outh Padre Island hosts huge Texas sized Spring Break parties with celebrities •W ith the proximity to Mexico, South Padre Island is known as the “Two Nation Vacation” •T he island is the perfect playground for sailing, fishing, windsurfing, parasailing, and jet skiing •S outh Padre Island hosts the annual Beach Bash Music Fest, featuring chart topping artists at Rockstar Beach – Spring Break’s #1 daytime hangout!
Located at the southernmost tip of Texas, SPI hosts a huge Texassized party every year! This tropical resort area, or the “Island”, as locals call it, is surrounded by the tranquil waters of Laguna Madre Bay on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. The four miles of award winning sand beaches come alive during Spring Break, hosting some of the most active and wildest events, proudly living up to the slogan “Everything’s Big in Texas!” The tropical weather is perfect to compliment your favorite daytime activities. Jet skis, banana boat rides, parasailing, snorkeling and more are all available for rental.
There are also plenty of beach volleyball games that are free and a fun way to meet other people. A host of clubs and bars also keep the party going after the sun sets. Louie’s Backyard hosts nightly live concerts with top name national acts, Hawaiian Tropic bikini contests, DJs and dancing, bungee jumping, rock wall climbing, go carts, and more. It is perhaps the signature club and this hot spot definitely lives up to the hype. Having been featured on MTV, E!, The Travel Channel, and more, this party spot is always jumping for Spring Break. Getting To “The Island” is easy whether you are flying or driving. If you choose to fly most people fly into Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport which is located approx. 30 minutes away. They also have inexpensive shuttles that travel back and forth regularly. With the sheer volume of Spring Breakers flooding into this resort town, it’s not uncommon for entire bars and hotels to become hubs of Spring Break activity. In fact, the entire island can feel like an exclusive Spring Break party.
PLAN NOW PARTY LATER With winter in full gear, you may find yourself daydreaming about relaxing on a sunny beach without a care in the world. Be sure that your spring break vacation will be as perfect as you imagine, and make your travel arrangements today.
Fortunately, Spring Break is just around the corner, which means planning for your getaway should start sooner rather than later. For most college students, finding the right trip means not breaking the bank, so starting early is key in order to find the best deals for your budget. Besides taking on a few more hours at your campus job, start by talking to your friends about what kind of trip they’d want to take. Near or far? Beach or otherwise? You also all need to have a candid conversation about money, and how much you are willing to spend and not spend. The trip you plan should try to accommodate as much as possible without going overboard, but be prepared to spend a little more than you’d like for erroneous expenses you might have forgotten about.
Websites like pcbeachspringbreak.com and dbspringbreak.com offer student-geared pricing on hotels and information on events that is extremely helpful. Some of the most popular Spring Break destinations like Panama City Beach, South Padre Island, and Daytona Beach are often booked quickly, so the earlier you start the better! Whatever plans are made for Spring Break, this time should be used as a respite from school to recharge, let loose and prepare yourself for the second half of the spring semester. Whether your destination is warm or cold, spring break is a week to look forward to, either as a distraction from winter or a preparation for spring.

MANAGING YOUR MONEY as a Student
It may seem that no matter how responsible you act, money disappears faster than ice cream during finals week. Weekly grocery shopping, morning coffee, drinks out with friends – they all contribute to evaporating your cash in seconds. Everyone wants to spend their money wisely, but sometimes that doesn’t mean refraining from spending any money ever. So instead of turning down a night out with your friends, just follow these tips and tricks. You won’t let your empty wallet control you ever again. ALWAYS SEEK DISCOUNTS Don’t let your fears of talking to people prohibit you from pulling out your student ID. They’ve all been there. See if you can get a buck or two knocked off an entrance fee or an extra round of appetizers for the table. Also, try branching out. Grab the weird on-sale wheat bread the next time you grocery shop instead of your usual classic baguette. Why not? You might just find a new favorite! BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD Just because you got paid yesterday doesn’t mean you should go all out tonight and splurge. When you go out, bring cash. If you leave your credit card at home, you can’t overspend. PLAN IT OUT During the age of online banking and apps for literally everything, you don’t need to be an accountant to make yourself a budget. You can easily join programs to set aside money for different aspects of your life. Set goals for your month. If you’re not sure how to start budgeting and what numbers will work for you, take a look at what you currently spend (ie: groceries, fixed bills etc). What’s left over is either savings or money to spend on that night out with friends. TRACK YOUR SPENDING Although tedious, this will help you get a feel for where your money goes. When you see it all written out it’s much easier to tell how you’re doing.
ASK YOURSELF: WOULD I USE THIS? Before you commit to a purchase, make sure you don’t just want or “need” it, but that you’ll use it. You might not need that new purse, but will you use it tomorrow? What about the day after? Next week? If you’ll use or wear the item equal to or more than every dollar you spent on it you’ll not only save money, but you’ll feel good about what you bought. TAKE SHORTCUTS Once familiar with your budget, it’s easier to see where you spend the most money. Ask yourself, can you live without what you’re spending the most on? Instead of eating out or meeting friends out, invite them to your place for a cooking party. Even making your own drinks at home can save tons. While this may not be the option for you, renting a bike for a month or walking to class instead of driving can cut down on gas and monthly metro card costs. HOLD ONTO YOUR COINS Yes, that beautiful vase full of pennies is actually worth something. Even if at the end of all your collecting it’s only $5, that’s $5 you can guiltlessly spend on that amazing bakery you salivate past on your way home every day. Quarters seem like nothing, but they add up so fast. By using your change to leave yourself with dollars instead of random coins, you also feel richer.
Once a year South Padre Island officially becomes Spring Break Island. A tropical oasis dedicated to the experience that never sleeps, stops, or slows down. There’s no place like it. Make your epic plans at sopadre.com/spring-break-17.

SOCIAL MEDIA THE HARD TRUTH Ego-boosting, self-esteem, validation, praise, happiness, and sense of worth. They’re all words to describe feelings we yearn for. Sadly, for many throughout the past decade or so, these feelings seem to only get achieved through the use of social media.
Most of us are guilty of using social media as a method of ego-boosting. Often times we turn to it to reestablish our sense of worth, resulting in an almost instant gratification. Whether it is through posting a selfie in the gym, changing a profile picture after a haircut, or typing a funny tweet—most of us use social media as a form of validation in one way or another. But the real question is: How long does this “high” last? And what are the effects of this addictive temporary “healing”? It feels great to be praised and acknowledged by social media. That recognition and happiness may last for several hours or even days. The truth is, however, that the happiness is very temporary. And once it subsides, you’re left wanting that high again. It can be argued that not everyone uses social media for these purposes. Maybe you’re merely proud of your homemade chicken curry dish and want to share with the world, or maybe you worked hard to land your dream job and feel excited to announce it. But where do we draw the line? When does this go sour? Do we really need to know that you’ve decided to go on a healthy food diet, or that you’ve gained 25 extra pounds of muscle? Do people really care? We turn to social media as a method of coping, and this can be 58
both a great and horrible thing. In times of loss, it can be a powerful way for others to show support. But in another sense, it can be a way for people to seek attention that isn’t real. The virtual attention often doesn’t translate to reality. The same person that says “I’m so sorry! I am here if you ever need to talk!” in an Instagram comment might not follow up with that offer face to face. Often there is a pressure to be positive in social media spaces. People often portray themselves on social media as happy, well-off and successful, but many aren’t honest. The solution to ending this vicious cycle of seeking constant validation over social media begins with being honest with yourself—being honest with your feelings, thoughts, and desires. Identify the truth behind your social media connection and realize it. If you feel you use social media for attention, take a step back and think about how long the satisfaction lasts and if it really fulfills the gratification you sought. We don’t need social media to discover and identify our self-worth. If you struggle to find it, it’s not waiting for you on the internet. It’s waiting for you in your friends and family. And really, do you honestly care what Susie did on Friday night or how hot she looks? Do we actually think that we need to gain approval from others on how we live our life? Will that end up making a real difference in the end?
