Thank You J.J. G.G.G! Spring Creek Community House would like to thank the Jan Juc Grass Growers Guild for their generous donation of $1260! We were fortunate to be chosen as their charity of choice for their second annual “grass-off day” competition. This year 15 members entered the contest for best lawn and the proceeds of the entrance fees and member donations were donated to the community house. It was a wonderful day with members shuttling across Jan Juc and Bells Beach to admire the gorgeous lawns. For more photos follow them on instagram: @jan_juc_grass_growers.

A Book Club That Discusses the Book! You are welcome to join us for an honest, stimulating discussion. Everyone has an opportunity to put forward a favourite read. This is organised well ahead of time, at a Christmas get-together each December, for the following year, so we all have time to borrow, or buy each book - and read it! The resulting list is diverse, interesting and sometimes controversial. It may include biography, short stories, whodunits – a broad and often whimsical selection. Members who have a passion for a particular book, genre, style or author can lead the group in discussion. To further help the process, a list of questions, or discussion prompts, is circulated through the coordinator a week in advance of each meeting.

SUBMISSIONS We’re looking for poetry, short stories and articles to include in Springboard. To submit please email: springboard@torquay communityhouse.org.au

Some of the gems we covered in 2016 were The Strays, by Emily Bitto; The Other Side of the World, Stephanie Bishop; and All the light we cannot see, by Anthony Doerr. It’s serendipity: a book or author you would otherwise have ignored, may prove to be a treasure. Contact the Community House for details of what we are currently reading. Interested? The Book Club meets 7.30 pm every third Tuesday, February through to November at Spring Creek Community House. For more information you can email June at junesmarks@gmail.com or get in touch with the Community House on 5261 2583, Monday-Friday, from 9am2pm.

BOOK CLUB

Meets@ Spring Creek community House 3rd Tuesday of the month 7.30pm-9pm ALL WELCOME

Proudly presented by Road to Reading 10 Tips For Preparing Your Preschool Child

1. Talk, talk, talk – explain, discuss, question, answer. Building your child’s bank of ‘known words’ is a worthwhile activity as their vocabulary can be an indicator of future reading success. 2. Visual Discrimination – matching, sorting, classifying. Look for ways in which a group of objects are similar and/or how things may be different. 3. Auditory Skills – listening, identifying syllables, isolating sounds. Lookout for deficits in hearing and seek assistance if you think there might be a problem. Unclear speech might indicate an issue with your child’s hearing. 4. Letter/Sound Knowledge – teach letter names & the sounds they make. 5. Rhyme – identifying rhyming words and make up your own rhymes - made up words are fine. 6. Initial Sound Awareness – listen for the beginning sounds in words. 7. Concepts of Print – understanding books and how they work. 8. Comprehension – understanding what is read, said or seen. 9. Model & Shared Learning – demonstrate how things are done. At other times share new learning. 10. Short and Sweet – increase the frequency of activities, but keep your expectations realistic. Learning is meant to be fun! Get ready to interact when the opportunity arises. If it’s not working, stop and try again at another time. Road to Reading offers children an opportunity to explore literacy and develop pre-reading skills in a fun, exciting and engaging environment. Term classes are running in Torquay and Grovedale now! FROM BELLS TO RED ROCK CHRIS BARR

Bells is a mecca of surfing for surfers from all over the world, but once we pass around the Bells Headland places to surf become harder to find and the crowds thin out. In a few short steps you may find yourself the only person on the beach, walking in wonderful solitude. You can walk around the point at Bells on low tide although some rock-hopping may be required. If the tide is high or you are feeling less adventurous you can access Southside by a path from the car park that winds down between weather-worn Moonah trees. It’s a steep drop and while going down isn’t too tough, the walk up on a hot day is a workout. The beach, depending on the tide, has a broad stretch of sand beneath soar-

ing golden cliffs. When the Bell family had a bathing box here in the early 1900’s it was called Addiscot beach and some older locals still call it that. The beach at Southside is part of the Point Addis Marine Park. The second of the Shire nudist beaches starts at the bottom of the stairs is clearly signed from the track but less obvious if you come around the headland. It’s a glorious walk along the sand under the cliffs, but be careful as there are occasional landslides. You can take the cliff-top track, part of the Surf Coast walk, and enjoy spectacular views, coastal heathlands and ironbark and messmate forests. You may also see the ruins of the old Jarosite paint mine. The red ochre in the cliffs here was a source of paint for the

Point Addis is named after Edward Brown Addis who was a British sailor and who, in1842 became Commissioner of Crown lands for Port Phillip. Addis surveyed much of the land in the area and is said to have built a small cottage in the hills above Bells Beach named “Addiscot” which later became the home of John Calvert Bell.

The old Jarosite paint mine

Wathaurong people for their ceremonies and in the 1920’s the ochre was mined to paint the red rattler trains. The great depression came and the mine was abandoned, but remnants of the operation remain. At the southern end of the Southside is Jarosite reef, a rarely surfed wave. Southside is a popular swimming beach in summer when beachgoers are looking to avoid the crowds in town, but care must be taken as it is unpatrolled and ocean conditions can change rapidly. At low tide you can walk can walk around Jarosite and the magnificent semi-circle of Point Addis beach opens up to you.

The beach at Point Addis is a jewel in the crown of Surf Coast beaches with its wide stretches of sand, protection from the winds, and with the ironbark basin as its backdrop and with spectacular cliffs it’s a glorious spot to spend a summer day. It’s worth the drive or walk to see the sun rise over the ocean and hit the cliffs. The big sandy bay is a great place to learn to surf and can be accessed from the car park above. In the corner below the point there are wonderful rock pools and small rock caves known as the Pixie Caves. You can’t walk around Point Addis, there is no sand even at low tide and you must go up the path, over the road and down the back Addis track to get back onto the beach. The Back Beach at Point Addis is much more dangerous, unpatrolled and heavily exposed to ocean swells and strong currents especially when the surf is big. The waves here are rarely surfed as the swell, wind and banks don’t line up together very often. At the end of Back Beach stands Red Rock

named after the ochre in the clay. The waves here can be good but it’s difficult to access as the road in has been blocked and it’s a long walk along the beach. If walking along the beach Red Rock is another spot where you must go ‘up and over’ to continue as channels in the reef make it difficult and dangerous to attempt to go around. It’s possible on certain days to walk all the way along our beaches from Point Impossible to Red Rock and indeed beyond to Anglesea. You need a super low tide and a good sense of timing but technology is available to help you pick the right time. It’s a wonderful experience to gather some friends, throw on your backpack and head off in front the Torquay Surf Club and arrange a pick up in Anglesea. Give it a try sometime, you won’t regret it.

Recovering From a Blown Budget After the Holidays pantry and only buy the fresh necessities such as fruit and veggies, milk, bread and eggs. Take advantage of the good weather and spend time in some of our gorgeous parks and beaches. Take a picnic so that you’re not tempted to blow your budget at a cafe or kiosk.

Over the holiday period it can be very easy for our best intentions to fall by the wayside and wake up to a painful financial hangover in January. So how do you recover financially and get back on track? We have a few tips that can help. Commit to a No Spend February Now that the school books and uniforms are paid for and all the holiday trips are over consider a financial fast. It may be hard but totally worth it. Cut all frivolous spending, so that means no fast food, home decor, clothes etc. As much as possible use up the food sitting in your freezer and

Sell, Sell, Sell Decluttering your house and selling what you no longer need is a great way to put a dent in your debt and make room for all the new loot the family got for Christmas and picked up at the January sales. Go through your closets and find all the clothes that have been outgrown or never worn because they never quite fit right. Gather up all the electronics that have been upgraded, toys that have been outgrown and the decor that no longer fits your style and get them ready to sell online. Take the time to take a couple of decent photos and set up an account on a site like gumtree or join a group like the Surfcoast Secondhand Page on facebook. Gumtree ads can be placed free and facebook sales groups are also usually free. Buyers are usually happy to arrange pick up so there are no postage fees to deal with. Save Up for the Next Holidays Try to put aside a small amount each week amount to cover the budget for the next holidays. You can put in place an automatic transfer to another account so it’s out of sight and out of mind. If you can put aside $10-20 a week it can add up to a nice cushion for next time.

Don’t Accumulate More Debt! When bill due dates are looming or creditors are calling it can be tempting to think a quick-fix pay-day loan or new credit card is the answer. Accumulating more debt by using credit cards or taking out loans to pay off other debts can bury you in a cycle of financial misery. If possible, negotiate payment plans and don’t take on additional debt until you’ve paid off what you have. The Financial Considerations of Transitioning into Aged Care • •

• If you or a loved one are ready to begin the process of moving into an aged care home it is important to understand your financial rights and responsibilties. The Australian Government pays for the bulk of aged care in Australia. But, as with all aged care services, it is expected you will contribute to the cost of your care if you can afford to do so. You will never be denied the care you need because you can’t afford it. When moving into an aged care home you may be asked to pay towards your care, accommodation and daily living costs. How much you pay depends on your financial situation. There are strong protections in place to make sure that care is affordable for everyone. The Australian Government sets the maximum fees for care and daily living expenses, and there are also rules about how much you can be asked to pay for your accommodation. If you are required to pay an accommodation contribution or an accommodation payment, you will have 28 days from the day you entered an aged care home to decide on your payment method. You can choose to pay your accommodation costs by a lump-sum, rental-type payments, or a combination of both. What you will pay will, be set out in a Resident Agreement between you and your aged care provider?

What types of costs are there? You may be asked to pay one or more of the following in residential care.

18

A basic daily fee. This covers living costs such as meals, power and laundry. For some people this is the only fee they are required to pay. A means-tested care fee. This is an additional contribution towards the cost of care that some people may be required to pay. The Department of Human Services (Centrelink) or Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) will work out if you are required to pay this fee based on an assessment of your income and assets, and will advise you of the amount. An accommodation payment. This is for your accommodation in the home. Some people will have their accommodation costs met in full or part by the Australian Government, while others will need to pay the accommodation price agreed with the aged care home. Centrelink will advise you which applies to you based on an assessment of your income and assets. Fees for extra or additional optional services. Additional fees may apply if you choose a higher standard of accommodation or additional services. These vary from home to home. Your aged care provider can provide you with details of these services and the fees that apply.

There are annual and lifetime caps in place to limit the amount of the means-tested care fee you will need to pay. You can call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to help you estimate the fees and charges you may have to pay towards your residential aged care. Before you call you should have your financial information ready, especially details of your various forms of income and assets. The My Aged Care website also has a fee estimator that you can use to estimate your fees. When you move into an aged care home, you will negotiate an agreement that will set out the fees and charges you will be asked to pay. This extract is taken from the article Five Steps to Entry into an Aged Care Home originally published here: https://agedcare. health.gov.au/ageing-and-aged-care-tools-and-resources-residential-care/five-steps-to-entry-into-an-aged-care-home

Waves and Wellbeing – The Wave Project comes to Torquay the new surfers, making sure they are enjoying themselves, feeling included and increasing their surfing skills. Rachael Parker, Manager of The Wave Project Australia, said it was a model that would translate well for young Australians facing social and emotional challenges. The Wave Project is now taking referrals for young people and volunteers to be part of the coming projects in 2017. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or know a young person that would benefit from the program please contact me. We are always looking for amazing volunteer to make this project such a success. Torquay welcomes the Wave Project to its local beaches. Starting on the 6th November 2016 at Cosy’s corner, the Wave Project group of surf mentors and young people braved the monster surf to learn finer points of surfing.

The local community has been fantastic in supporting this new program. We would like to thank Spring Creek Community House for providing their venue for use and Surf Coast Shire for their support.

The Wave Project, a UK initiative, started with just 6 volunteers in 2010 in Cornwell. It has grown over the past 6 years, now becoming an international charity as Australia welcomes the new project in the Surf Coast.

A team of local volunteers, led by youth worker Rachael Parker, are using The Wave Project’s award-winning model of delivering surfing lessons with one-to-one mentoring to help young people overcome mental health issues and social isolation. Young people take part in short surfing courses lasting 6 weeks, before joining a fortnightly surf club run by volunteers. The Wave Project recruits community surf mentors to support the young people on the program. Encouraging

Painting With Parkinson’s Changes Days From Term 1 this year Painting with Parkinson’s will change to Mondays from 10.45am to 12.45pm. Painting with Parkinson’s is a fun and therapeutic art program for those living with Parkinson’s and other conditions such as MS, Alzheimer’s and dementia. The program is run by experienced art practitioner Michelle Buggy and participants have found that the exercises they do in the class have benefited them physically and mentally. Everyone is welcome to join, anyone requiring mobility assistance will need to have their carers stay with them. If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, please come along! Classes will commence from January 30th, the cost is $10 per class and includes all materials. If you would like more information, please call 5261 2583

Backing Up It’s very Important to have some kind of backup plan in case the Hard Drive inside your device actually dies. Most Magnetic Hard Drives should last up to 6 years but they can potentially die at any time. SDD can last up to 10 years but even they’re not immune to failure so it’s important to back up at least every month! The best options these days are external Hard Drives these are used less often than the one on your computer so will last longer. Another type is CD/DVD these can last up to 30 years! and are good for small amounts of data. Online storage is another great option there are plenty of companies that provide this option like google drive or dropbox. These require the internet and are typically 25GB then you’ve got to pay for extra. If you have a slower internet speed it’s going to take a long time to upload or download depending how big your stuff is. Other types are USB, SD cards, micro SD cards and extra internal Hard drive. There are lots of ways to back up your data these days, choose what’s best for you and your needs. Control What the Kids can Access If you have kids who have their own iPhones, iPads etc or you let your child play with yours you can set restrictions on what you want to allow them to access on the device. To do this go to settings > general then go down to restrictions you will have to create a pin for it once there, you can choose anything you want!

The Joy of Giving!

It’s that time of year when everyone is doing plenty of shopping and that means lots of plastic bags being used every day. Whether you’re buying food or gifts, think twice every time a plastic bag is offered to you. By making refusal your first option, you can help reduce the millions of bags that go into circulation every year, particularly at Christmas time. All hands were required on deck to help Archie ferry the donations

Well done Archie! Torquay College students were asked to come up with a social action project and Archie decided to collect toys to donate to asylum seeker and refugee children. He has been absolutely overjoyed by the generous response from the community.

Thank you to everyone who donated toys, it is wonderful to see that we live in such a caring commnity. The toys were taken to Diversitat in timefor the arrioval of 40 new families.

The community got into the giving spirit and a huge number or both new and good condition second hand toys were donated. Many took the opportunity to teach their children about caring for those less fortunate than themselves and several children were inspired to use their own money to buy toys to donate.

It’s pretty easy to be plastic wise. Boomerang Bags are the easiest option and are available in a range of points around Torquay, including the IGA, Farmer’s Market and Bendigo Bank. Take a reusable bag if you need one and return your surplus bags next time you shop. It’s also easy to keep one of those rolled up Envirosax-type bags in your handbag, backpack or pocket for incidental items. It is everyone’s responsibility to do their bit and stop plastics becoming a common sight in our landscapes and waterways. Do you realised that every bit of plastic you’ve ever touched, in your entire life, is probably still on the planet? It’s a sobering thought but it’s possible to change our plastic habits. The big supermarkets now have soft plastics recycling for your household wrappings so start keeping them out of landfill. Plastics are a scourge but a little awareness can go a long way.

Ruby decided to use her pocket money to buy this barbie to donate

Rotary Club Torquay

The Torquay Rotary Club led by President Lesley Shedden has continued to support important projects in the Torquay Community, Regionally & Internationally. This is achieved with funds raised through our famous BBQs, the Motor Show, and by support in kind to organisations within the community. There have been Achievement Awards given to local schools, a donation towards reading programs at Winchelsea school, Contributions to the RSL, the Surf Club & many more. Internationally the Club will be contributing to a Freshwater program in Cambodia.

The Rotary Club of Torquay is delighted to present the new fitness stations on our beautiful foreshore path. This new community facility comes about after three years of planning and fund raising. The club is particularly grateful to the three sponsors – Torquay Community Enterprise; RACV; and Surf Coast Medical Centre and Great Ocean Road Recreation Committee (GORCC) for their enthusiasm in adding these stations to the walk and installing the equipment. We look forward to seeing this equipment being put to use to assist in the health and wellbeing of our community. 1st Torquay Scout Group, at Spring Creek Reserve, is the place to look if you’re interested in adventure and learning life skills. Our group is growing and always welcomes adults, boys and girls aged from 6 up, to get involved and join one of our sections: Joey Scouts, Cub Scouts, or the Scout Section. Youth members develop leadership skills in small groups, challenge themselves with outdoor activities, and learn about local and global issues in a fun way. The scouting program helps kids develop resilience, self-reliance, initiative, responsibility and become valuable members of their community. Scouting is about learning by experience and being prepared for new adventure!

Kids don’t have all the fun! Adults can join the team as trained Leaders and Adult Helpers (no uniform needed). All Leaders and regular helpers undergo a Police Clearance and Working With Children (WWC) Clearance. All leadership training is provided through Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT), a registered training organisation accredited to award Certificate III, IV or Diploma in Leadership. Torquay Lions Club

The summer season is in full swing again with a range of activities. Naturally Lions Christmas Cakes were sold and enjoyed. Our annual summer raffle outside the Bendigo bank commenced on December 5. This year it is divided into two sections each with a different prize. During December we raffled a rather large Christmas hamper which was drawn on December 23. For our drawing on Australia Day in Taylor Park, we are raffling a Weber BBQ again. Look out for some new signs around town. GORCC has replaced our small signs at the playground entrance on the intersection of Zeally Bay Rd and the Esplanade. Also the Lions and Rotary Clubs have worked together to replace the roadside service club signs that were removed by the Shire in a signage upgrade 5 years ago. These signs can be seen near the intersections of the Surf Coast Highway with Duffield and Darian rds. The Lions train and BBQ were busy as Christmas approached. Apart from the Cowrie market, the train was working at both private functions and breakup parties for local children’s groups. The BBQ supported many local functions during this time. Our sausage sizzles seem to attract long queues of satisfied customers wherever we are. It was at the Christmas Carols, and will be at the Bells Bash at Jan Juc SLSC, Cowrie markets and other events during January. Apart from the more publicised activities, we support the local food bank in times of need and undertake small jobs such as occasional gardening for those no longer able to cope. We could be very busy this coming year as we are celebrating our Centenary – 100 years of Lions Clubs working for their communities around the World. We thank everyone for your support and wish you all the best for 2017 from your Lions Club.

Torquay Theatre Troupe has finished the year on a high with the successful production of Humble Boy by Charlotte Jones. Earlier in the year the troupe presented the well acclaimed English comedy, All Things Considered by Ben Brown. Due to other life commitments, we were unable to stage a one act play during 2016, but plans are in hand for an offering in 2017. President Fred Preston and his hard working committee would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to the success of the productions this year. It takes many people many hours to produce what audiences see on the stage. To all those people we say a sincere thank you. TTT extends thanks to all the people who support us by purchasing tickets and attending performances. This year we have had to change our method of selling tickets, and we thank you all for your patience in adopting the new online ticket purchasing system. We are aware that for some people it is a more convenient system, while for others, who are unable to purchase online, it has been an unwelcome change. We have discussed various methods of selling tickets, but have come to the conclusion, like many other organisations, that online ticketing is the way of the future. Rest assured that there will always be a telephone number to call if assistance is required. We thank you one and all and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you in May 2017.

The Torquay Community Men’s Shed Inc. is open to local men from all walks of life to encourage friendship, support, good fellowship and to promote health and wellbeing. We’re an Incorporated, not for profit organisation at 18 Price St. Torquay, behind the Old Police Station (TOPS). While some of our members are creative in the workshops, many just come to sit, drink tea/coffee, eat cake and biscuits and talk for two hours around the “Table of Knowledge”! It’s all part of the process of getting together, meeting new people and generally feeling relaxed in a male friendly, alcohol-free space! Apart from woodwork, we now have a metal work shed with a metal screw-cutting lathe, gas, arc and MIG welding plants, sheet metal folder/ guillotine and other metal working equipment. We meet several times a week: Mondays 1:30pm -3pm is our ‘Singing in the Shed’ group who say they feel fantastic after exercising their lungs. Don’t worry about talent or a lack thereof – these guys can break glass but they do have fun. They’re even getting gigs in town, so come along and join in! Tuesdays & Wednesdays are our regular Shed days, from 9:30am12:30pm, when everyone arrives, kicks back to relax for a few hours or get stuck into a project in the workshops. On the last Wednesday of the month we have a regular sausage sizzle, all for the same daily fee of $2! Our Cooking Group, that meets on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month at Torquay College where they create some weird and wonderful food! It’s all good fun and provides food to eat and new skills. Now that spring is here, escape from the house for a couple of hours and come see what we’re up to!

Danawa Community Garden Did you know that eating locally grown organic vegetables is healthy for you? Of course you did – and getting involved with your local Community Garden is a great start! Danawa has 27 plots for rent ranging from smaller 2x1m raised beds (perfect if you have a bad back) up to some that are 2x3m in size. All the plots are now fully subscribed, but do occasionally become vacant, so go to www.danawa.org.au, become a ‘Friend’ of Danawa for just $10 and get on the waiting list. Or become a full member for just $25/year ($35 family) and join in with the planting and harvesting from the ‘share beds’ at a ‘Pick ‘n’ Plant’ session (check the website calendar for dates and times). The cost of a plot is only another $15/ yr - you can do your own thing at your own pace whenever you want, plus have use of the tool shed, nursery, shelter, and toilet and help with the shared gardens too. So why not become a member at Danawa, and actually make the change in your life that you know you need? Join in at a ‘Pick ‘n’ Plant’ session – check out www.danawa.org.au for everything you need to know, or email : danawacommunitygarden@gmail. com.

U3A SurfCoast now enters its fourth year and continues to grow. During 2016 we had 222 students enrolled with 486 attendances at thirty-eight classes, which were conducted by thirty tutors. Last year the most popular classes were activity-based – Tai-Chi, Yoga and Pilates and we hope to offer these in 2017. We expanded into Anglesea with three Occasional Lectures and the very popular ‘Writing Your Story Workshops’ with Jan Morris. The Occasional Lectures will continue and the first for the year will venture outside the usual. Local resident Tom Healey, who has played organs all around the world, will present: The Organ- the ultimate Musical Gadget Demonstrated on March 31st at St Lukes Anglican Church. We expect to offer most of last year’s classes as well as some new ones to spark peoples’ interest. Three members of the Management Committee are retiring so we welcome new members onto the Committee, especially those with some computer skills. Contact 0435 374 139 if you are interested. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday 3rd February 2016 at 2pm at Spring Creek Community House and all U3A Surfcoast Inc members are welcome to attend. Full course descriptions and class times are available online at www. u3asurfcoast.org.au. Interested students can enrol online or at Spring Creek Community House, 14 Price Street Torquay after the AGM on February 3rd.
