Did you know that 57% of UK grassland soils (64% of Northern Ireland grassland soils) are below the target pH of 6.0? An incorrect pH could be costing you!
Why is lime important?
pH is a measure of the acidity of the soil. For maximum nutrient uptake by the crop, UK and Irish soils should be between 6.0 – 6.7. 6.0 is the minimum pH a healthy mineral grassland soil should be. Over time, the pH of soils will reduce due to crop off-take through silage cuts and grazing livestock. Therefore, you should aim to have your pH in grassland fields at 6.2 to ensure the correct pH is maintained over time. An arable field in the UK and Ireland should be between 6.5 -6.7 for maximum nutrient availability.
The pH of soil ensures that nutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potash are available to the crop for uptake which ensures good growth and higher yields. If the pH falls below the optimum, there is a risk of crop yield losses as well as decreased crop quality as the nutrients needed for growth will not be available.
How to improve your soil pH?
You should regularly sample your soil every 3-5 years and correct deficient fields by spreading LIME.
Thinking about reseeding grass fields this autumn?
Sample your ground to see what your current pH is and correct any deficiencies. The best way to correct deficiencies? With a SpreadPoint Lime Spreader of course!
