HOW WE HELP

Browning Center students are given assistance and support for their classes. Classroom assignments and projects are used to further students’ skills in their individual areas of need, such as:

HOW IT WORKS

The Browning Learning Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., including lunch periods. The Center is an inviting, well-equipped space staffed by the Director (a Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant) and three academic support specialists. During most academic periods, one or more subject teachers are present in the center to offer subject-specific support to students.

The Browning Learning Center represents a commitment by Saint Peter’s Prep to provide a structured program in which students with learning disabilities or ADHD can receive the support they need to succeed at Prep. It is our goal to help students become aware of their own learning profile and develop the strategies and skills that will strengthen their ability to handle tasks more independently as time goes on, and to take these skills with them into college and beyond.

Using the student’s psycho-educational, neurological, and/or medical assessments, we create an education plan of strategies and accommodations. Teachers consult with the Browning staff to identify and coordinate ways to address students’ needs in the classroom. Parent input and feedback about their son’s progress are essential components. Together we work as a team with each student on his individual goals.

• organization

• note-taking

• test-taking strategies

• reading for purpose

• writing

• using school resources.

Homework assignments, including essays and research papers, provide a framework for putting skills and strategies learned into practice.

Our primary goal is helping students gain independence in managing their own individual learning styles and in successfully advocating for the assistance they need.

Participants in the program are scheduled for a minimum of three academic periods (50 minutes each) per cycle. These visits are scheduled when students would otherwise have a free period in their day; students do not miss any of their regularly scheduled classes to attend the Browning Center.

Freshmen enrolled in the program will be scheduled to be in the Center at least 4 times an academic cycle. The main focus is executive functioning, small group, and 1:1 academic support.

Students may choose to visit the Center before or after school or during their lunch period or for additional periods as needed.   Students may work individually or in small groups.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

The Browning Center is available to students with documentation of a specific learning or medical disability or ADHD. There is an additional fee for this program. Financial aid is available, depending on eligibility, through Prep’s Office of Financial Aid. Parents wishing to enroll their son in the program should contact Christine Davis at DavisC@spprep.org.
