People often ask me why I don’t offer online training. There are several reasons that I will talk about today. First and foremost, I enjoy meeting and getting to know people. This is best done with personal faceto-face interaction. This allows the purest form of communication. And teaching/learning anything, including pool requires a high level of communication. I believe my students have the best learning experience when we are both at the same pool table. To be fair, I have friends and fellow instructors who offer online
instruction and are successful at it. But it’s not something that fits with my style.
So why don’t I just make video training lessons? Quite simply, I don’t know how to make a video that would apply to a large group of people. Every player is unique, and my training is geared toward the individual. I’m 5’11” and 165 lbs. My shooting mechanics probably won’t work for a 5’5” lady or a 6’2” college fullback. It’s important to help each individual develop in a way that best suits them.
It’s important to help each individual develop in a way that best suits them.
As for discovering minor flaws in mechanics, I can see much more in person than I can on a small computer screen. A slight tightening of the grip, or a minor unwanted arm movement, is much easier to see in person. And it’s those little things that may be a problem.
As for internet training, you have to be able to separate the good information from the bad. I have seen tons of instructions posted on social media. Some of it is quite good, while much of it is completely wrong. Anyone with a cell phone can post something online. That doesn’t mean it’s accurate or right for you. And the introduction of AI has produced diagrams and videos that look good and sound reasonable, but defy the laws of physics.
A good example of this can be found in diagrams trying to explain kicking or banking systems. Most AIgenerated diagrams illustrate perfect geometric angles. While this information can be somewhat helpful, other factors need to be considered. Every pool table will respond differently. The density of the cushion rubber, the cloth on the table, the speed of the shot, the condition of the balls, or the humidity can alter the path of the balls. These factors make many diagrams you find on the internet less than accurate. And since the conditions often change, so do the results you will get.
My point here is that there is much more that goes into making a successful pool game than diagrams and videos. You need to be aware of all these factors when trying to improve your game. Simply trusting what you read or see on the internet can slow your process of improvement. Learn everything you can, but verify that it is accurate before adding anything to your pool toolbox.
We all need help to get better at this game. Just make sure your sources of learning are actually helping.
Until next time.

Pool players are athletes with fewer physical demands but more mental skill requirements than athletes in other sports. Once fundamental pool skills are mastered, pool primarily becomes a mental venture. So, the work you do on your pool mental skills is just as important as your time
it may not be as physically demanding as other sports, pool still requires physical skill to perform well. High-level play requires sustained focus and minimal physical fatigue over extended periods. Precise movements and control are essential for accurate pool shots, and maintaining proper

spent working on shotmaking and position play. And yet, most pool players do not spend much time addressing the mental aspects of playing pool. The mental side of pool is often overlooked. It is more fun to play pool or practice running balls than to work on mental skills. But fifteen to thirty minutes per week of mental training can significantly improve your pool playing abilities. This is because the words and images you put in your brain are what create your physical motions.
Sports generally require physical activity, while games tend to focus more on mental aptitude. Pool demands a high level of mental aptitude. Pool players must strategically plan their shots, visualize successful outcomes, manage anxiety and emotions, and focus on the task at hand. But pool also requires a degree of physical prowess, particularly in terms of hand-eye coordination and fine motor control. While
posture and executing shots demands muscular endurance and flexibility, particularly in the arms, shoulders, and back. In addition, pool’s competitive nature and strategic gameplay set it apart from purely recreational games. Given its blend of skill, strategy, physical ability, and competitiveness, it is fair to say that pool leans more toward being a sport rather than a game.
Like elite athletes in other sports, the best pool players in the world are blessed with outstanding visual perception, hand-eye coordination, stamina, and excellent mental skills. They have spent years of daily practice and competitive play honing their physical and mental skills. The Ohio School of Sports Psychology reports nine specific mental skills that contribute to success in sports. They are all learned and can be improved with instruction and practice.
Nine Mental Skills of Successful Athletes*
Successful Athletes:
1. Choose and maintain a positive attitude
2. Maintain a high level of self-motivation.
3. Set high, realistic goals.
4. Deal effectively with people.
5. Use positive self-talk.
6. Use positive mental imagery.
7. Manage anxiety effectively.
8. Manage their emotions effectively.
9. Maintain concentration.
Detailed Descriptions of the Mental Skills
1. Attitude
Successful athletes:
• Realize that attitude is a choice.
• Choose an attitude that is predominantly positive.
• View their sport as an opportunity to compete against themselves and learn from their successes and failures.
• Pursue excellence, not perfection, and realize that they, as well as their coaches, teammates, officials, and others, are not perfect.
• Maintain balance and perspective between their sport and the rest of their lives.
• Respect their sport, other participants, coaches, officials, and themselves.
2. Motivation
Successful athletes:
• Are aware of the rewards and benefits that they expect to experience through their sports participation.
• Are able to persist through difficult tasks and difficult times, even when these rewards and benefits are not immediately forthcoming.
• Realize that many of the benefits come from their participation, not the outcome.
3. Goals and Commitment
Successful athletes:
• Set long-term and short-term goals that are realistic, measurable, and time-oriented.
• Are aware of their current performance levels and can develop specific, detailed plans for attaining their goals.
• Are highly committed to their goals and to carrying out the daily demands of their training programs.
4. People Skills
Successful athletes:
• Realize they are part of a larger system that includes their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and others.
• When appropriate, communicate their thoughts, feelings, and needs to these people and listen to them as well.
• Have learned effective skills for dealing with conflict, difficult opponents, and other people when they are negative or oppositional.
5. Self-Talk
Successful athletes:
• Maintain their self-confidence during difficult times with realistic, positive self-talk.
• Talk to themselves the way they would talk to their own best friend.
• Use self-talk to regulate thoughts, feelings, and behaviors during competition.
6. Mental Imagery
Successful athletes:
• Prepare themselves for competition by imagining themselves performing well in competition.
• Create and use mental images that are detailed, specific, and realistic.
• Use imagery during competition to prepare for action and recover from errors and poor performances.
7. Dealing Effectively with Anxiety
Successful athletes:
• Accept anxiety as part of sport.
• Realize that some degree of anxiety can help them (continues on page 43)
Mental sabotage can ruin your match before it begins. Here are six ways that pool players psych themselves out. If you could improve your performance without buying new equipment or training more, where would you start? You might look at your mental approach—how your mental game helps or sabotages your success. The attitudes, beliefs, and mindsets that players take into a match dictate their overall success. The first step to improve your mental approach is understanding how you might sabotage your success with mental game roadblocks.
1. Worry
Fear of failure is the number one reason why pool players don’t perform as well in tournaments as compared to everyday training. Most of the time, fear of failure is rooted in two areas:
• Social approval or worrying about what others think.
• The payoff syndrome or worrying that all the hard work you do to succeed might not pay off.
You must understand your underlying fear so you can overcome this form of self-sabotage.
2. Expectations
Despite what others have taught you about positive expectations, high expectations can limit your success on the table. Why do high expectations limit you? If you don’t achieve your pre-match expectations during play, you’ll start to doubt yourself or become frustrated.
Essentially, expectations set you up for failure before you strike the first ball.
In addition, expectations are usually about outcomes, such as placing high or winning. Players often judge their performance based on their expectations. In most cases, expectations cause competitors to focus on outcomes, and they feel more pressure to perform at their peak, which can turn into anxiety or worry.
3. Nerves
Experienced pool players welcome pre-match jitters. Pre-match jitters help instill an optimal level of mental activation or excitement, which can boost focus. Your ability to embrace pre-match jitters is critical to having a consistent performance. Many players will interpret prematch jitters as anxiety, which causes them to become stressed or anxious. It’s best to use this type of energy on something constructive rather than destructive!
4. Confidence
Confidence is a pool players best friend. If you have a high level of belief in your ability, it’s hard to feel anxious. Unfortunately, many competitors leave their confidence to chance. This means they fail to take full responsibility for feeling confident at the start of the match. Do you wait to feel confident in your skills only when you win the first few games? If so, you leave confidence to chance. Are you unsure how you will perform before a match?
Do you doubt your ability to finish strong? Your main objective is to be proactive. You don’t want your confidence to be thrashed around by immediate results at the start of a match. You want to fuel your confidence, just like you fuel your body before the start. You should not react strictly to what’s happening early on.
5. Approval from Others
For many players, a big source of worry comes from social approval or the need to have others “approve” of their performance. If this is you, you might feel the need to be admired, accepted, respected, or liked by fellow competitors or teammates.
This leads many pool players to worry about performing poorly and avoiding mistakes because they think “the outcome” influences what others might think about them. Thus, if you crave approval from others, you are more likely to become anxious or afraid to fail in competition. Your need for approval from others supports your fear of failure. Pool players who need others’ approval to feel confident in their skills are prone to performance anxiety.
6. Perfection
Perfectionism can be both an asset and a disadvantage for players. Perfectionism can slow you down during competition, which can help with better decisionmaking. For example, perfectionists have incredibly high expectations! Sometimes they overanalyze. They also lack confidence. However, perfectionists love practice because they are goal-oriented, committed, and strive to improve their skills.
When perfectionists attempt to perform perfectly, they become easily frustrated with mistakes and are often stuck in a “training mindset” when playing. None of these characteristics is ideal for performing your best. The attitudes, beliefs, and mindsets that players take into a match dictate their overall success. Once you understand how you might self-sabotage your success with doubt, high expectations, perfectionism, or other mental game roadblocks, you can better develop a plan to eliminate self-sabotage from your game.

I am often asked by cue sport players, “Do you have any advice around breathing?” My humorous attempt at a reply is often “Yeah, don’t stop doing it.”
Yet for any of us, when reminded about breathing or when under a form of pressure or anxiety, our focus can often be drawn to something that we otherwise are programmed to unconsciously do.
Our body’s function of breathing, also known as ventilation, facilitates the exchange of gases that are essential for life, taking in the oxygen we need for the body’s cells to produce the energy required to function, and in return expelling the waste product of carbon dioxide of which the build up of, would be harmful.
This process is primarily controlled by the nervous system and specifically by respiratory centres located in the brainstem. Although we don’t have to consciously think about each breath and breathing works automatically, we also have the means to override this system when our attention is brought to it or we would like to control it, such as with holding our breath, during speaking or activities like swimming or singing.
When performing in sports, in this case specifically cue sports, stress or pressure can significantly interrupt this automatic process, when we experience stress the sympathetic nervous system is activated to the fight, flight or freeze response, the response that often feels
uncomfortable to us, especially when attempting to complete an action such as potting a key ball within a match, but which is our bodies safety mechanism to manage danger and keep us safe.
This leads us to release stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which in turn increase our heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.
As a competitor during a match, we may recognise this as our thinking checks in with our body, we notice that our breathing has gotten shallow, we are suddenly aware of our breaths, the tightness, and of its timing. We quickly do a scan of ourselves, we notice the tension in our shoulders and arms, the shake of our knees, or things like sweaty palms, we feel uncomfortable, and we can question how we are going to play the shot in front of us correctly while feeling this way.
When increased we can start to hyperventilate as our balance level of gases is disrupted and we can feel dizziness, tingling sensations all of which that adds to the anxiety and fear, and concerns of passing out, which can lead into a negative feedback loop that further disrupts our breathing as we strive to gain control and stop the panic, or even in extreme cases panic attacks themselves.
Breathing techniques can significantly benefit a snooker player before, during, and after playing or practicing. They help to improve focus, concentration, relaxation,
and overall performance. I am always personally one to look at treating the cause rather than the symptoms of issues, so It is essential to understand the underlying reasons why a player feels the need to use breathing techniques and work on solutions to address those issues directly. However, while working on these areas, being aware of and practicing breathing techniques can greatly help a player feel far more comfortable.
Before Playing:
Fitting in breathing exercises as part of preparation can be extremely beneficial to a player for several reasons, such as clearing and calming your mind, keeping out distractions while reaffirming positives and strengths, and maintaining focus. This can start by -
1. Identifying the Reasons: First, it’s important to recognise the specific issues causing anxiety or stress before practicing or playing. These could vary from performance pressure, fear of failure, or lack of confidence. Working on these root causes will be crucial in the long run.
2. Deep Abdominal Breathing: Start by finding a quiet place to sit or stand comfortably. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, allowing your abdomen to rise as you fill your lungs with air. Exhale slowly through your mouth, ensuring that your abdomen falls. Repeat this deep breathing for a few minutes to help calm the mind and body.
During Play:
There are several great breathing techniques I like to encourage during matches, and it’s great to have one to hand that you know you have practiced. Two I prefer:
1. Colourful Breathing: Visualise your breath as a specific colour (e.g., blue, green, or whatever feels calming to you). As you inhale, imagine breathing in that colour, filling your entire body with it. When you exhale, envision releasing any tension or negative thoughts in a contrasting colour, such as black, dark blue. This technique helps to shift focus, reduce stress, and enhance presence at the table.
2. Box Breathing: This technique focuses on controlling
the breath rhythmically. Inhale deeply for a count of four, hold the breath for a count of four, exhale slowly for a count of four, and hold the breath again for a count of four. Repeat this four-step cycle, known as box breathing, several times to promote relaxation and maintain composure during intense moments.
After Playing:
Using breathing techniques after competing can be just as important as before and allows us to reset and reflect.
It can help us spend relaxed time reflecting on what we have done well, what we had in place to win, and to calm feelings of excitement and expectations as we get ready for our next match, or manage feelings of disappointment after negative results, helping us to recover and move forward.
1. Reflective Breathing: After a session, find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to relax. As you breathe, reflect on your gameplay, acknowledging any successes and areas for improvement. Use the breath as a tool to let go of any disappointment or frustration and cultivate a positive mindset for future practice or matches.
2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Combine breathing with muscle relaxation techniques. Starting at your toes, tense each muscle group for a few seconds, and then release the tension as you exhale. Slowly move up through your body, focusing on different muscle groups, until you’ve reached your head. This progressive relaxation technique helps release physical tension and promotes a sense of calm and rejuvenation.
Remember, while these techniques can be helpful, it is equally important to develop skills, strategies, and consistency in cue sports. Practice situations that make you feel uncomfortable to become more confident when you face them. Breathing techniques should complement your training and preparation, and not serve as a means to address deeper challenges.
I’d encourage anyone to explore and practice each to enhance their performance and feel more comfortable.
The magnetic chalk holder was designed so you can have ease of access wherever you are around the table. Far too often, the magnet comes detached or the chalk falls out of the boot, and you end up with a $35 piece of broken chalk. Sometimes, the magnets are way too big or bulky to make it comfortable. The Supermagnetic Chalk Pro walks the line right between the two. The magnet lives up to its name, but it’s not oversized or overpowering.
The Supermagnetic Chalk Pro is a series of different challenge and luck coins with a powerful magnet made to fit in your pocket. The coin I got was a Carpe Diem Memento Mori coin. On the magnet side, it displays “Memento Mori”, which means “remember that you have to die”, and on the other side of the coin, it reads “Carpe Diem”, which means “seize the day”. This is a perfect
mental reminder always to perform the best you can, but losing is inevitable. If you are someone who refers to mental notes or certain mantras when you play, this is the perfect accessory for you. With 73 coin options, you can almost guarantee there will be one personalized for you. The boot (half that holds the chalk) is a rubber material that works with all chalk shapes. It comes in a square shape, but with a small amount of heat, it can be shaped into circular or octagonal-shaped chalks. With thin chalks like Toam, it is best to shim the bottom of the boot so the chalk sits flush.
The Supermagnetic Chalk Pro does its job well. The magnet is powerful, but not too strong. It will pull at thin materials like basketball shorts; however, if you snap it off, it works fine. With thicker materials like jeans, there’s no problem at all. The chalk has not fallen off the
magnet once while using it. The coin I received is slightly larger in diameter than a 50-cent piece. It has the ideal balance between not being too bulky in your pocket and still being easy to grab when you want to take it out. The boot follows suit and also works just like it was designed. The chalk doesn’t fall out of the boot, and it's not overly difficult to remove when you want to change chalk.
Robert Schmit started making chalk holders when his friend's magnetic chalk holder broke. He made his first one from supplies from a local hardware store and assembled it in his basement. The first one featured a small magnet, a plastic-dipped washer, and a boot. This worked well for a little while, but he knew it still needed work. He went through a series of magnets that were too weak or too strong until he found the perfect magnet. Robert then got the idea for coins when he was looking at his brother's challenge coin from the military. Once he made one for himself, his friends wanted some too. He decided to put them on Facebook as well and sold his first 50 in 3 days. The same pace continued when he made 100 more and then 500 more. All of this was within 6-8 months of making the first one for himself.
Supermagnetic Chalk Pro has gone through innovation, and there is more to come. The chalk holder is currently advertised on Facebook and is sold all over the United States. He hopes to eventually open to international markets, but is focusing on the domestic market first. While Facebook is working for now, Robert is in the process of creating a website and obtaining a design patent on the Supermagnetic Chalk Pro. When the
website launches, he is preparing to have 1,000 ready to ship. He also has invested in equipment to alter the current manufacturing process. Even though the product already has a wealth of great reviews, Robert is determined to make it even better.
With all things considered, for $40 plus shipping, you can get a reliable chalk holder unique to your taste. While being relatively cheap, the product is still durable and highly functional. The Supermagnetic Chalk Pro does everything you could expect out of a chalk holder. You can purchase them on Facebook from Robert Schmit currently, but they will soon be for sale nationwide on the website Supermagneticchalkpro.com.

And everybody who's ever "yielded a cue" has had to pay their dues. You've gotta lose a few, so why not lose to the very best in your area?
If you're the best in your area, then you're in the wrong area!! Venture into another territory....

Pool players are athletes with less physical demands but more mental skill requirements than athletes in other sports. Once fundamental pool skills are mastered, pool primarily becomes a mental venture. So, the work you do on your pool mental skills is just as important as your time spent working on shotmaking and position play. And yet, most pool players do not spend much time addressing the mental aspects of playing pool. The mental side of pool is often overlooked. It is more fun to play pool or practice running balls than to work on mental skills. But, fifteen to thirty minutes per week of mental training can significantly improve your pool playing abilities. This is because the words and images you put in your brain are what create your physical motions.
Competition
As you improve your physical and mental pool skills, seek even greater challenges to keep improving. That means seeking and playing players who are better than you. They will help you learn to play better. Try to avoid playing lower-level players because pool players tend to play down to their competition. No matter who you play, recognize playing to the best of your ability is far more important than winning.
When competing, regardless of who your opponent is, your key objective is to make a shot and get a decent position for the next one. Focusing on doing exactly that will put you in the winner’s circle more often than
not. Shoot every shot with that intensity of purpose. Of course, anything can happen in a pool match but never ease up or give up.
Competing boils down to establishing status; it determines who is better than whom on one particular day. But the real value comes from learning about your physical and mental pool skills. And competition tests you. An appropriate mindset for competing is to go into every match with a realistic sense of your skills. After the match, evaluate how you played based on whether or not you effectively used your skills.
Big Game Pressure
Coping with tournament or big game pressure is crucial for pool players to perform at their best when the stakes are high. Preparation is key. Familiarize yourself with the setting, rules, and opponents if possible, and commit yourself to following your pre-shot routine. Imagine executing perfect shots and obtaining an excellent position for your next shot. Reflect on previous competitions where you played well and remind yourself of your capabilities, past successes, and strengths. View any pressure you feel as an opportunity to play your best pool and display your skills. Remind yourself all your practice and past matches have trained you for this moment.
As you play, be fully present in the moment. Deal with any distractions and fully focus on making each shot. Trust

your skills and abilities. When nervous, take slow deliberate breaths to calm your nervous system and help you stay centered. You can also take short breaks to calm your mind. Step away from the intensity of your pool match.
Find a mentor. Having a mentor who has experienced similar pressures can provide valuable assistance and support. He/she can offer advice and help you navigate the challenges of competition pressure.
Replace any negative thoughts with positive phrases like “I’ve got this” or “piece of cake.” Pressure is a natural part of the game of pool. Staying calm under pressure is a mental skill that improves with practice. Work on it and you will perform at your peak when it matters most.
Good Sportsmanship
Good sportsmanship is important in any pool match. It not only makes the game more enjoyable but also fosters respect among players. Here are some guidelines for displaying good sportsmanship:
1) Treat Your Opponent Well:
• Treat your opponent as you would like to be treated
• Wish your opponent good luck before you start.
2) Respect During Play:
• Stay away from the table and out of your opponent’s line of sight when they are shooting.
• Do not engage your opponent in conversation while they are shooting
• Be honest and call your fouls. Do not wait for someone else to point them out.
3) Stay Engaged:
• Pay attention to your match. Be ready to shoot when it is your turn.
• Know the rules.
• Manage the table, balls, and cues with care.
4) Win or Lose with Grace:
• Manage the table, balls, and cues with care. Show respect to your opponent, regardless of the outcome, and shake hands at the end of a match.
• It is okay to cheer for a teammate but avoid cheering against opponents.
Not following these guidelines can result in arguments and hard feelings between competitors. Display good sportsmanship and common courtesy to both your opponent and your host location. Good sportsmanship contributes to a positive pool-playing environment. Enjoy the game and treat others as you would like to be treated!
Competing against better players, handling pressure with effective techniques, and displaying good sportsmanship are all essential components of becoming a successful pool player. Embracing these elements will not only improve your game but also foster a positive and respectful playing environment.
The Billiard Buddy is a highly diverse cue holder. The product is made out of a food grade silicone that allows it to excel in almost every scenario you will run into. The Billiard Buddy has several advantages over its competitors, such as its durability, grip, weight, and wide range of design options. I have been heavily using the billiard buddy for over a month now, and I have only found one circumstance it wasn’t ideal for, but it still was up to par. Overall, the Billiard Buddy does exactly what you want your cue holder to do.
The best feature of the Billiard Buddy is its durability. When I first got the product, I was a little skeptical at
first. I thought the product seemed too thin and may not hold up. Over time, I tested this product to the limit and was still unable to damage it in any reasonable way. I started by folding and stretching it with more than reasonable force, and it always came back to brand new quality. I tried leaving it folded for a week, and it stood the test of time. I bragged to my pool friends, and they proceeded to abuse the product with no damage. I then wondered what it would take to break or deform it, and I got an answer. I had to use most of my force stretching the Billiard Buddy to get it to tear. If you damage your Billiard Buddy, that’s on you. There is no way this product does not look and perform like it’s brand new without exaggerated user error.
The grip of the Billiard Buddy is the best I’ve found out of any cue holder I’ve used. It will grip to any cue and almost any surface. I’ve tested the product with wood, carbon fiber, and graphite shafts, and it holds all of them right where they should be, without leaving any residue. The product excels with curved tables. Most cue holders will pivot on a curved surface, but not the Billiard Buddy. It wraps itself around the curve and stays put. I have tested this on metal and wood tables, and it doesn’t budge. I have also put this on multiple different wall materials, including brick, and it sticks to the wall until you take it off. The only circumstance the Billiard Buddy does not excel in is tables with a tablecloth. It sticks to the tablecloth just fine, but the cue holder moves with the cloth because it is so light. The product
will still work in this condition with a little bit of care. I was at a four-day tournament with tablecloths, and I never dropped a cue. With over a month of use, I have yet to drop a cue with this holder. If the product does stop gripping, you can wash it with warm water and dish soap to get it back to brand new.
The main advantages of the Billiard Buddy are its grip and durability, however, there are multiple other advantages. The portability of the product is phenomenal. It is very lightweight and very flexible. I have a two-stick and a 5 stick holder, and they take up about the same amount of space in my bag. When folded and rolled, the 2-stick holder is 2”x3” roll and the 5 cue holder is 2.5”x3”. They will get even smaller if you force them into your bag. Another advantage is the design options. There are plenty of colors and pattern options to match whatever you would like. The company can match your sticks, bag, or jersey, as each product is handmade to order.
They even offer a neon option that glows in the dark. They hope to soon be able to personalize the Billiard Buddy with names and logos of your choice.
Billiard Buddy is a family-owned and operated company. Danny Jones and his wife started the business in 2024 out of a distaste for other options on the market. They started by making cue holders for themselves, and it grew from there. Their main complaints with other products were the weight, size, portability, and limited color options. They designed a product that perfectly solved all of their grievances. Every Billiard Buddy is handmade to order by the owners, a luxury that customers don’t get very often. In the first year of production, the product has been sold all over the continental US, along with as far as Alaska and Puerto Rico.
The Billiard Buddy is the best cue holder I have found on the market. It does everything it’s supposed to, exceptionally. Billiard Buddy is overwhelmed by the positive feedback it has received from the customers, and for good reason. I have only good things to say about the product, and it has found a new home in my case. With the company being so young, I am very excited to see what they do next. At the end of the day, I won’t hesitate to recommend the Billiard Buddy to any pool player out there.
Student: I heard that you haven’t competed in twenty years and can’t play anymore. How would you compete in todays game?
CK: Players that have achieved an exceptional level of play and retired now tolerate the players that bash them with things like “they were never that good” or “this guy was way better” or “no lie, my dad could beat this guy in his prime.” It’s all a bunch of baloney.
As a roadie, my game was never fancy until it was time to be fancy. On the contrary, you wanted to be conservative, allow locals to compete and think they had the best of you or at least let them think they could compete. Then if someone called your hometown, you had some protection on your rep. It’s tough on your ego to allow players to run around talking up their level, knowing in a race to 21 they don’t get to ten, if lucky.
Recently a good league player told a friend that “Chips stuff don’t work.”
If I ask the guy to play for $5000 his wife would have to invest in a smelling salts company: he would have multiple blackouts for months! It’s often cowards that tear you down to make themselves bigger.
So do me a favor, the next time someone tells you
To Kill A Mocking Railbird
someone can’t play ask them to do a challenge match with that person. Put the money up for charity. Doesn’t have to be much, but make them prove their opinion.
Would I hold up the way I did many years ago? I don’t know. I may fall apart like a cracker in soup!!!
But I know some of the best in the world that told me I was one of the best they ever played. I’m content with that.
My job was never to win trophies. It was to make my backers money by taking out the best in the game, unexpectedly, and getting out before the da#% phones got you.
That’s how you stay out of mags and off social media. Recently, a top player asks me how to get the USA to win the MOSCONI.
They need psychologists. They need to understand what’s happening. It isn’t a pool match anymore. It’s like spousal abuse at this point. USA is in the victim mentality mind set. The good news is it can be fixed, relatively easily.
But will our players humble themselves the way many European players do?
It doesn’t seem to be our strongest trait.

perform well.
• Know how to reduce anxiety when it becomes too strong, without losing its intensity.
8. Dealing Effectively with Emotions
Successful athletes:
• Accept strong emotions such as excitement, anger, and disappointment as part of the sports experience
• Are able to use these emotions to improve, rather than interfere with high-level performance.
9. Concentration
Successful athletes:
• Know what they must pay attention to during each game or sport situation.
• Have learned how to maintain focus and resist distractions, whether they come from the environment or from within themselves.
• Are able to regain their focus when concentration is lost during competition.
• Have learned how to play in the “here-and-now,” without regard to either past or anticipated future events.
The Nine Mental Skills of Successful Athletes identified by the Ohio School of Sports Psychology are equally relevant for pool players. Despite the lower physical demands, pool players require even more mental skills than athletes in other sports. Therefore, the effort you put into developing your mental game of pool is just as crucial as the time spent on shotmaking, position play, defensive play, and strategic runouts. Embrace the mental challenges of pool, and you will see remarkable improvements in your pool playing abilities.
In the ever-evolving world of billiards, finding the right tools and knowledge to elevate your game can often feel like navigating a complex maze. Enter Zero-X Billiards, a name that has quietly been making waves among enthusiasts and seasoned players alike. Rather than focusing solely on the tangible aspects of the game –the cues, the tables, the pristine set of balls – Zero-X Billiards positions itself as a purveyor of something perhaps even more valuable: expertise and insight, delivered right to your fingertips.
Founded by renowned instructor Tor Lowry, Zero-X Billiards primarily offers a comprehensive library of instructional videos and books designed to demystify the intricacies of pool. In a market saturated with equipment reviews and flashy gear, Zero-X carves a unique niche by focusing on the fundamentals, the
strategies, and the subtle nuances that separate a good player from a truly exceptional one.
The core of Zero-X’s offering lies in its extensive video collection. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill, quick tip videos. Instead, they are meticulously crafted, in-depth explorations of key aspects of the game. From foundational concepts like center ball control to advanced techniques in pattern play, kicking, and banking, Lowry leaves no stone unturned. The production quality is clear and concise, prioritizing effective visual demonstrations and easyto-understand explanations. You won’t find distracting graphics or overly complex jargon here; the focus remains squarely on imparting actionable knowledge.
For those who prefer a more tactile learning experience, Zero-X Billiards also offers a selection of highly regarded
books. Titles like “P.K.F. (Pool Knowledge Forever)” and “Pattern Puzzles” have garnered praise for their detailed diagrams, clear explanations, and thoughtfully designed drills. These resources serve as invaluable companions to the video instruction, allowing players to revisit concepts and reinforce their understanding at their own pace. The “Pattern Puzzles” book, in particular, stands out as a unique tool for developing crucial shot planning and visualization skills, presenting players with real-game scenarios to solve. This methodical style is particularly beneficial for players who may feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of variables involved in a game of pool. By focusing on core principles and building progressively, Zero-X empowers players to develop a solid foundation upon which to build more advanced skills.
While Zero-X Billiards doesn’t offer physical equipment like cues or tables, its educational resources are designed to enhance your understanding and appreciation of the equipment you use. By mastering cue ball control, for instance, you’ll gain a better feel for how different cues perform and what characteristics best suit your playing style. Similarly, understanding the principles of banking and kicking can inform your decisions when purchasing a table, as you’ll have a greater appreciation for factors like cushion responsiveness.
The digital nature of much of Zero-X’s content provides a significant advantage in today’s fast-paced world. Instant downloads and streaming options mean that players can access valuable instruction anytime, anywhere, fitting learning seamlessly into their busy schedules. This accessibility democratizes high-quality billiards education, making it available to anyone with an internet connection, regardless of their location or access to local coaching.
However, it’s worth noting that the focus on digital and print resources means that there isn’t a personalized, one-on-one coaching element within the standard Zero-X offerings. While the clarity of instruction goes a long way, some players may still benefit from direct feedback and tailored guidance from a live instructor. Nevertheless, the depth and breadth of the material provided by Zero-X offer a remarkably effective
alternative for self-motivated learners.
In conclusion, Zero-X Billiards offers a refreshing and valuable contribution to the world of billiards. By prioritizing comprehensive, well-structured instruction delivered through videos and books, they empower players of all levels to deepen their understanding of the game and unlock their full potential. The knowledge they impart is arguably the most crucial piece of equipment in any serious player’s arsenal. If you’re looking to move beyond simply hitting balls and truly master the art and science of pool, Zero-X Billiards is undoubtedly a resource worth exploring.
