Night at the Museum premieres April 13

The SPJST Foundation invites you to Night at the Museum, celebrating the 49th Anniversary of National Volunteer Month, on Thursday, April 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Czech Heritage Museum is located at 9 West French Avenue in Temple, Texas.

The April event showcases Temple’s inspiring individuals whose invaluable seeds of kindness through volunteering are making a positive difference in Temple and the surrounding area. If your business, civic, or cultural organization, church, or school group is working to make a positive difference, you’re invited; likewise, if you’ve got a project to promote and share, this is your time to spread the good word in the Showcase while you

mix and mingle with friends old and new!

The SPJST Foundation is committed to providing support and direction in advancing the mission of the museum as a catalyst for stimulating programs and activities for a variety of audiences in Temple and across the state. Night at the Museum will be a monthly community and social forum – the second Thursday evening of each month in April, May, June, July and August –with the emphasis on community engagement and enlightenment. It’s Your Life

Keep Your Emotions Positive

Note: In the February 27, 2023, Vestnik, the article said, “My wife and I will be going to Hawaii in August.” It should have read “My wife and I traveled to Hawaii.”

People buy on emotion, not logic. When logic was involved, we would buy the cheapest item available. When you buy clothes, do you shop around looking for the same items for the cheapest price? Usually when you see something you like, the color is good . . . you like the style . . . it arouses your senses, you usually will buy it. When buying a car, the color may make a difference. You may prefer cloth to leather interior . . . the woodgrain look, the dashboard, the body style, all make a difference. A logical person will say the car only needs to get me from point “A” to point “B” so color, style, look, and the CD player don’t make a difference so why pay the extra $5,000 for the car. Society buys on emotions, not logic. Color sparks an emotion, style sparks an emotion. What your friends and coworkers might think also helps sell the product. We are a society that lives off emotions when it comes to buying.

In life insurance, it is more important than anywhere else to create positive emotions. Positive emotions can help you get the right product for your needs. Negative emotions can cause you to buy on price, not needs. Remember: it’s called “Life” insurance – not “Death” in-

surance. Once you start talking about burials, death, and hardship, you start bringing out the negative emotions. Your thoughts should center around the positive—what your family can have, what they can get, what they can do. In the event you are no longer around, little Alice can still go to college. Your spouse can make sure Alice gets everything you wanted her to have in life. Who would not want their child to have everything they wanted them to have? Nobody says, “When I’m gone, my kids are on their own, and I could care less what they do.” Nobody wants to hear that their kids or spouse would have to give up their lives because you were no longer around.

When you want to buy life insurance based on price, it usually is a negative emotion that made this determination. “I want something in case I die, but this is all I can afford.” The logic says something is better than nothing, but the emotion says at least I gave them something. To overcome this, you need to turn that negative emotion into a positive emotion. Say something like, “I need to make sure they are taken care of. I want to make sure my children can do the things they love.” You ‘would’ want them to play sports, be in the band, or have those dance lessons. With the right policy, they can continue to grow the way you want them to. The emotions start to become positive. Keep the negative out. Try to eliminate these seven words from all your conversations: wouldn’t, shouldn’t, couldn’t, can’t, won’t, don’t, and not. All these words provoke a negative emotion. Use positive words instead.

You don’t buy a smart car to save on money when you need a pickup truck to haul things. Unlike cars, if you buy the wrong policy, it could be very costly later and it may be too late to fix it. If you are not sure if you have the right insurance for your needs, call me or your territory manager. We will be glad to guide you, no matter who you have your insurance with - SPJST or someone else.

“No one can confidently say that he will still be living tomorrow.” —Euripides

My door is always open; figuratively and literally.

Stay blessed,

How to Dress Appropriately for a Funeral Service

How will you know what the family wants you to wear while celebrating a funeral service

Funerals are a way for the living to show respect for the deceased and bring unity to the group in the celebration or homegoing. Dressing for such an occasion is often one of the most important elements of funeral etiquette, and all attendees should know what to wear to meet the needs of the occasion in a tasteful manner.

Keeping it Simple

In previous years, it was common to just wear black or your Sunday best. Now families will wear things made in unity to include bracelets, shirts, shoes, socks, ties, etc. to bring the group of grievers together. Key takeaway here is to know if it’s black slacks/skirts or blue jeans. Pallbearers will usually be addressed via a group text message from the family or the lead funeral director for your family. Obituaries are sometimes written in a way to express to the guests what to wear also. Check the online obituaries for more information that the local newspapers won’t print.

Color

Previously, black was a standard color for mourning, and was always the safest choice. However, neutral, darker colors

Lodge 160, San Angelo Members Enjoy Meal

Two Little Girls

in memory of d.knape october 2, 1944 - march 14, 2022

are generally acceptable depending on the nature of the service. Men will typically wear black suits, black dress shoes, and a white dress shirt adorned with a neutral tie or unified colors. Women have the option to wear black dresses, as well as sensible dark blouses and pants. Formal black shoes are standard for women attending funerals. Now, families will celebrate with special colors which have meaning – maybe pink for breast cancer or blue for Dallas Cowboys. Having these special colors displayed brings togetherness and a healing contribution.

Presentation

It is imperative for all guests to make sure their outfits are clean and pressed for

San Antonio Rodeo Volunteer

a respectful presentation. Carefully select all pieces and have them dry cleaned for a crisp and conservative appearance; maybe pre-printed and designed with the right fitting, ensuring all pieces are able to be preserved if it is a meant to be a keepsake.

Weather

It can be difficult to plan funeral services around the weather, which can present some clothing challenges for attendees—especially those at a graveside burial. When needing to add coats and jackets—in rainy or cold weather— remember to keep a reserved appearance that is still comfortable. Low, wide heels and flat shoes are always best for outside. In hotter temperatures, guests should stray from revealing too much and opt for clothing that is made from lighter fabrics. Closed-toe shoes are best since fire ants in untreated grasses can be a nuisance. At Young’s Daughters, we furnish umbrellas for rain and sun protection, and our caskets are also protected with a weather vinyl covering. We offer heated elements to the tent for the winter months ensuring our guests are protected throughout the year . Our staff is trained on weather and first aid emergencies. Call us today to preplan 254-401-1302 or check our obituaries for appropriate attire at www.youngsdaughters.com.

I remember them as they used to be my two little girls a blond and a brunette so cute and cuddly all dressed up in frills and bows like two little dolls dressed by my wife their hair done up in curls and as fresh as spring flowers people would always comment on how pretty they were and how smart and precocious and I the father would be so proud it was something to behold as if by some miracle I had produced these lovely little girls sugar and spice and everything nice and most of all that sweetness inherited from their mother they were my shining joy and still are the closest thing to heaven one could find two angels here on earth.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth ready for spring break

Dear Vestnik Readers,

In two weeks, it will be spring break. I cannot wait because that is a whole week off from school. I’m planning on going to my grandparents’ house for spring break. There, I could spend the whole week in the country. Spring will start soon. It’s been feeling a lot warmer recently, which I like. I hate the cold weather because I feel miserable. Luckily, during the spring, there’s not that much cold weather.

Last week, it was Read Across America week at school. There was a book fair, and we got to have a bunch of cool dress-up days. Unfortunately, we also had to take two tests at school that week. It was not very fun. Luckily, this was the last test for a while. The next major test I will have are the STAAR tests. This year, I will have to take reading, math, and science. STAAR stands for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. In other words, it tests to see if you’ve learned anything during the year. I’m pretty sure that’ll be next month.

Have a great March!

Lodge 49, Rowena youth win Prom King, Queen

We discussed the changes in the SPJST Youth Program, for instance, the State Youth Showcase (State YAD) being two days in Temple on Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29.

We collected monies for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, and the youth club is matching the proceeds.

Since it’s been awhile that we had a face-to-face meeting, I was finally able to distribute monies to Ryan and Megan Ruzicka from the 2022 District Three YAD as well as the photography pictures to Josh and Kalyne Tucker.

We participated in the Souper Bowl community service project and collected - with the mother lodge - more than 2,700 ounces of soup! Yea for us being that both the mother lodge and youth club are a smaller group now.

Next Meeting—March 19

Our next meeting will be at Sokol Dallas (7448 Greenville Avenue) for an Easter party that we are joining with KJT and KJZT on Sunday, March 19. A Catholic mass will start at 11 a.m. followed by the guest appearance of the Easter Bunny. Bring your baskets for there will be an egg hunt filled with lots of fun. A catered lunch and social time filled with a jam session with Laddie (he said that if anyone has a musical instrument for you to bring it and join together

to create enjoyable music)!

If you plan to be there for lunch, you must RSVP for a count to Dorothy Prasifka at 214-500-2338 by March 15 so she can add you to her list.

I hope to see more youth attending so we can include you in our upcoming events for 2023.

The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas joined in with the mother lodge this month (instead of Zoom, FaceTime, or just a phone call) on Sunday, February 19, 2023.

But we are still attending and participating in all of our activities which make this Youth Leader very proud! Thanks to everyone for your patience and timing to keep our club going. I know with the club members getting older, we may soon be moving our youth either to colleges or to other careers. But I’m hoping they continue with the adults and keep SPJST strong!

After our meeting, we had the pleasure of learning how to make rosettes! It first started with Ray Faraizl, Sr. explaining while Charlie Nemec demonstrated what Ray was saying. After we watched the adults, we had our chance to prove our skills as well. I think they turned out great for our svacina (a snack) afterwards! Thank you Ray, Charlie, and Kathy. We had fun learning in the kitchen!

TCGS to pay tribute to Czech Veterans who gave their life for our freedom; deadline is April 1

A Soldier Who Had Faith

This article, in part, appeared in the Vestnik, Volume 77, No. 42, on pages 12 and 13 on November 1, 1989. It read:

This is a story of a man’s sacrifice during World War II.

S/Sgt. Frank Valentich of the Second Infantry Division, was killed September 9, 1944, at Frontven, France, on the main road from Guipavas to Brest, France.

Frank joined the Second Infantry Division as a replacement in July 1944. He was just like any other rifleman who had to prove himself in combat.

As the division moved across the hedgerows of Normandy, he proved himself many times, as a rifleman, assistant squad leader, and squad leader. Many times, when the situation was static, word would come from headquarters that a Holy Mass would be held in the rear, and you were allowed a few men to go.

This man, when he was a private, asked that others be allowed to attend, if the requests to go exceeded the quotas. He said that he came from a very religious family that he had been an altar boy all through his younger life.

He mentioned that he didn’t feel that he would come out alive but, of course, in a situation such as that, he was always told to think positively. He said that he knew if he died that a priest would be with him because he attended many first Friday masses in his life. (He said that he was always taught if you attended Mass and communion on nine first Fridays that, if you died, a priest would be

with you to give you the Last Rites).

In September, after moving out of Normandy, France, and becoming a part of a task force, clearing the Peninsula of Germans, the division moved back to Frontven, ready to start the assault on the City of Brest. In this position, there was little action only for the patrols being sent to the front.

Finally, the orders came that the division was to attack toward Kernvarch. As the unit moved forward, the many houses in the village were checked quickly. Sgt. Frank Valentich crossed the road and moved up a sunken road.

He proceeded forward to the fork in the road when a machine gun opened fire. The machine gun was dug in through the hedgerow.

Sgt. Frank Valentich was wounded. While the rest of the squad gave supporting fire, the medics were able to pull him back. Sgt. Valentich was brought back into the first floor of a house which was on the highway.

The medics gave him blood plasma and did whatever they could to help him, but the bullet hit his artery high up on his thigh, and there was no way to stop the bleeding.

Suddenly, in the corner of the room, a trap door in the floor started opening. Of course, all weapons in the room were pointed to that direction. When the trap door was opened, a hand came waving, then a head with a beret on top. It was then noticed a white collar of a priest, a second priest was with him. He was asked if he could speak English and was told that Frank Valentich was a Catholic and was dying. They understood and both knelt by the stretcher. When the medics said that he was dead, not only was there one priest when he died, but there were two. The house was used by the traveling priest to commute between villages.

S/Sgt. Frank Valentich, like millions of other Americans serving in combat, gave their lives so we might have the freedom we so much enjoy. The Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) has plans to pay special tribute to as many Czechs who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice serving our country for our freedom as possible with a special recording over the internet beginning the week of May 22, 2023 - the week leading into Memorial Day.

This tribute is not for TCGS members only—but for all Czechs. So that as many as can be honored, we need your help and support. How? By submitting your Czech Veteran’s name and photo to Charlene Hurta by email to cmhurta@earthlink.net or mail to Charlene at 1231 CR 201A, Angleton, Texas 77515. Along with the veteran’s name and photo, please give the date of birth, date of death, and branch of service, if known. Be mindful, your veteran that you have in mind needs only “one drop” of Czech blood to qualify. The veteran

could be your dad, husband, wife, brother, sister, distant relative, or an acquaintance.

If you have an email address, please include it if you are mailing the photo in order that we may make sure you receive notification of the link to our recording paying Tribute to Czech Veterans Who Paid the Ultimate Sacrifice for our freedom. Veteran photo(s) and information submission deadline is April 1, 2023.

Rosettes

Fried pastries known as rosettes are common around the world. They are known as rozety in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. These delicate pastries are made by dipping a rosette iron into a thin batter, dunked into hot oil until golden brown then dusted with confectioners’ sugar. They are far easier to make than they seem, even if a little time-consuming.

Ingredients

2 large eggs, slightly beaten

2 teaspoons sugar

1 cup milk

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

4 cups canola oil, for frying

Directions

Place 3 inches of canola oil in a deep fryer or deep, heavy-bottomed saucepan, and heat to 375 degrees F, using a candy/frying thermometer clipped to the pot. Attach the desired rosette shapes to your handle (some handles can accommodate 2 rosette shapes).

While oil is heating, prepare the batter. In a medium bowl, add sugar to eggs and whisk to combine.

Add milk and whisk to combine. Measure flour correctly and whisk together with the salt.

Transfer to the bowl with eggs and milk and beat until smooth. Add vanilla and mix again. (The consistency should be that of heavy cream. If it is too thick, add a little milk. If the batter is too thick, the rosettes will not be crisp.)

When ready to fry, immerse the rosette iron with attached shape(s) into the hot oil until thoroughly heated (1 minute or so). Lift iron out, shaking off excess fat and blotting onto a paper towel. Dip into prepared batter only to the depth of the form, not over the top as the excess batter will have to be scraped off after frying in order to take the rosette off the form.

Dip forms into the hot oil. When foamy bubbling stops and/or rosettes are a golden brown, lift iron out of oil, allowing excess oil to drain off back into the fryer or saucepan.

Remove the rosettes using a skewer to push them off or tap the back side of the rosette forms with a wooden spoon. Drain rosettes open side down on paper towels so excess oil will run out.

Dip the rosette iron into the hot fat, blot lightly on paper towels and then dip into the batter. Continue in this manner until all the batter is used up.

Dust rosettes with confectioner’s sugar while still warm or when cool, or just before serving. Enjoy.

Tips

• If iron or oil is not the correct temperature, either too hot or too cold, the batter will not adhere to the forms.

• If the rosettes are not crisp, the batter is too thick and should be diluted with milk.

• Well-drained and cool rosettes can be stored in an airtight container. If they become soggy, re-crisp them on a cookie sheet in a 350-degree F oven for a few minutes.
