Melanie and SPJST Officers:

I just wanted to wish everyone in the Vestnik and SPJST offices a blessed, healthy, and happy 2023! I also would like to say thank you’ll for my 2023 SPJST calendar. It has earned its place in my kitchen, and I have filled the dates with birthdays, anniversaries, appointments, and important special events that I want to attend. I look forward to trying the cookie recipes included as well as reading about SPJST. Thanks again for sending it to the members.

Member seeks simple Czech language videos

Hello. My name is Phillip Hadash (Hadas in the old country). My greatgrandparents came over in the late 1800s. Both of my parents could not speak English when they started school. I live in Hallettsville and just joined Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

Like most other Czech towns, the language is disappearing. I speak the language a little, but have a hard time finding someone who speaks it also. I did take some classes at Blinn in Schulenburg which helped me understand the language. There are some people who want to say short “baby” sentences in Czech, but need help forming them. Yes, there are websites with the numbers and “Good Morning!” However, I think we should learn as a baby learns: Seeing and hearing at the same time.

Is there someone in your office or in SPJST that would be quite good at making a short video and posting it on YouTube? Maybe a new video once a month would be enough. It would have two or more people speaking in Czech with subtitles in both Czech and English. Sometimes a person cannot understand what was said but can make sense of it when they see it spelled. They will also know what it means by the English sub-

title. Because if it is a video, they can see it, hear it, and rewind it to hear it again. Your paper could tell everyone about the new videos and where they can find them.

I do appreciate everything you do for the Czech community. This could be another gumdrop on the cupcake!

Thank you for your time.

Pozdrav Pan Buh

Phillip

From the

It’s Your Life

Attention, Lodges!

arn money. Every month! We are excited to introduce our 2023 membership drive. It’s called “Into The Community,” and all the details are below.

There are three ways to earn points:

• 1 point for each certificate (policy) issued on an existing member.

• 2 points for each new member an agent writes into your lodge.

• 3 points for each new person a lodge member refers to an agent (any agent anywhere in Texas) or to SPJST through the referral card, once it is is-

For each month that a lodge earns 10 points, the lodge will receive a $100 check. If the lodge reaches 25 points, the lodge will receive a $250 check. Nothing counts until the certificate is issued. Payout is quarterly. Results will be posted in the Vestnik each month.

The Survivor Game

But, wait! There’s more! Our agents are participating in The Survivor Game so we have also created a Survivor Game for our lodges!

Join The Survivor Game, and your lodge may earn an additional $1,000! How? For every month that a lodge earns 10 points or more in the Into The Community Membership Drive, the lodge will move on to the next month. If you do not earn at least 10 points, you

will be knocked out of the game. The last lodge standing on December 31, 2023, will receive $1,000! If multiple lodges are still alive at the end of the year, the one with the most points earned throughout the year will win.

If a lodge does not earn at least 10 points in one month, it will receive a mulligan (1 free month). This will allow the lodge to stay in the game if it has a bad month.

Stay in the Game

A chart with the survivors will be posted each month in the Vestnik. The longer a lodge stays in the game, the better its chances to win.

Let the competition begin! Best of luck to all lodges!

Earn 1 point for each certificate issued on an existing member.

Earn 2 points for each new member an agent writes into your lodge (certificate must be issued to receive points).

Earn 3 points for each new person a lodge member refers either to an agent (any agent from anywhere in Texas) or to SPJST through the referral card, once it is issued.

For each month that a lodge earns 10 points, the lodge will receive a $100 check. If the lodge reaches 25 points, the lodge will receive a $250 check. Nothing counts until the certificate is issued. Payout is quarterly. Results will be posted in the Vestnik each month.

Ideas for Increasing Membership

Ask your Territory Manager to invite agents to your lodge social. Ask the agent to speak and share updates on the latest SPJST news.

Invite friends and relatives to your lodge’s monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly socials. Since it is a social, it will help build better relationships.

Organize a members-and-friends dinner at a local restaurant. The Home Office will help you advertise and fund the dinner. The lodge’s responsibility is to find a place that is large enough to accommodate up to 40 people. This event will bring people together and help build a relationship to the community with SPJST.

Invite your Territory Manager to speak at your lodge event.

Sponsor or ask the Home Office to help sponsor events in your community. Host the SPJST Float in your city or community parade. SPJST needs to be visible in your community, and the Home Office is willing to help you pay for this.

Let a non-profit community organization use your lodge hall for its events. This provides visibility for your lodge, and it lets the community know who you are.

Work with SPJST Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty or your Territory Manager to present seminars or free insurance reviews for all members of the community at your lodge hall or a facility in the community, if you do not have a building. The Home Office will help organize and advertise the event. The Home Office will help select the best topic for your community or bring agents to do the free reviews.

Organize a community event, like a fundraiser, food drive, clothing drive, pet food drive, etc. Ask a local business to allow you to set a table in front of their establishment. Many will welcome the opportunity.

For every month that a lodge earns 10 points or more in the Into The Community Membership Drive, the lodge will move on to the next month. If you do not earn at least 10 points, you will be knocked out of the game. The last lodge standing on December 31, 2023, will receive $1,000! If multiple lodges are still alive at the end of the year, the one with the most points earned throughout the year will win.

NOTE

If a lodge does not earn at least 10 points in one month, it will receive a mulligan (1 free month). This will allow the lodge to stay in the game if it has a bad month.

A chart with the survivors will be posted each month in the Vestnik. The longer a lodge stays in the game, the better its chances to win.

Important Facts You Need to Know About Your Veteran’s Burial Benefits

10 facts you need to know about veterans burial benefits

by Sabrina N. Young, CFSP SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Member and Owner of Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center

When it comes to the burial of a person who served in the armed forces, it’s important that family members and friends know what their loved one is entitled to when it comes time to lay that person to rest. Many people are confused about the benefits that veterans are entitled to, making these 10 facts important to learn and understand:

Fact 1: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits do not cover all of the funeral or cremation arrangements of honorably discharged veterans.

There are monetary, recognition, and service benefits that are available to this veteran’s family; however, reimbursement for funeral or cremation costs is limited. Typically this kind of reimbursement only applies to veterans who have:

• Retired from the armed services

• Were disabled in the line of duty

• Died in a VA hospital or nursing home while under VA contract

• A family should do some research about the benefits that apply to their loved one, as these guidelines are meant to serve only as an overview.

Fact 2: You will need documentation to verify military service.

In order to verify military service, you will most likely need to provide discharge papers. If the family does not have this paperwork available at the time of the individual’s death, the funeral home can help to secure this necessary information.

Fact 3: A veteran’s family needs to request an American flag.

A flag is provided free of charge, and can be used to drape over the casket or accompany the urn of the veteran who has passed away. The flag is typically presented to the next of kin. In order to obtain this flag, the family should complete an Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes form and provide a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers.

Fact 4: Military funeral honors ceremonies need to be scheduled in advance.

Federal law states that every eligible veteran must receive a military funeral honors ceremony, including the folding and presentation of the United States flag and the playing of “Taps,” should the family request such a service.

Fact 5: Veterans’ caskets are not free of charge.

Neither the VA nor the branches of the armed services offer a free casket for a deceased veteran, except in the instance that death occurred while on active duty.

marker for the grave of a deceased eligible veteran.

Fact 10: Replacement military service medals or awards must be requested in writing.

The next of kin is able to ask for replacements of awards or decorations. If the veteran is still alive, they must provide their signed authorization in order to allow family members to ask for replacements.

Understanding the benefits that your veteran is eligible for ensures that they get the kind of burial that fully acknowledges their service to their country.

Fact 6: A Presidential Memorial Certificate must be requested.

The Presidential Memorial Certificate is an engraved paper certificate that is signed by the current president. It honors the memory of a deceased veteran. To receive this prestigious certificate, the family of the veteran can apply at any VA regional office or by U.S. mail.

Fact 7: For those veterans who are not buried in a VA national cemetery, monetary burial benefits are limited.

Those who are buried in a private cemetery may be eligible for a partial reimbursement to cover burial costs. This typically includes a $700 burial allowance and a $700 plot allowance.

Fact 8: There are requirements that must be met in order to bury a person in a VA national cemetery.

Those who died while on active duty and veterans who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable are entitled to be buried in a VA national cemetery.

Fact 9: Headstones for burial space in a private ceremony must be requested.

At no charge to the family, the VA will provide a government headstone or

Winter Storms: Tips for Preparing Your House and Pipes

In 2021, winter storms in Texas led to hundreds of thousands of insurance claims and billions of dollars in damage. Here are steps you can take to protect your home and property from winter storm damage.

Know Your Coverages

Burst pipes. Ask your agent if your home or renters policy covers sudden and accidental water damage. This coverage pays for damage from burst pipes. Flood insurance doesn’t pay for damage caused by burst pipes.

Home and renters policies might not pay for damages caused by frozen pipes if you didn’t take steps to protect your pipes, such as keeping the heater on in your house.

Food spoilage. If the food in your refrigerator spoiled because of a power failure caused by something your policy covers, your policy should pay up to $500 to replace your food. And often there’s no deductible. Take pictures and keep a list of spoiled food.

Prepare Days Before A Freeze

Wrap outdoor and indoor pipes in unheated areas (like a clothes washer in your garage).

Remove water hoses and wrap outdoor pipes.

Drain and turn off your lawn sprinkler system.

Turn off the water to your clothes washer if it’s in an unheated garage.

Store your lawn equipment in a garage or shed to keep in good condition for next year. Drain the gas.

If you leave your house before a freeze, turn off the water at the shutoff valve and leave your heat on.

Protect Your Pipes When It Freezes

Open cabinets under sinks to let your house’s heat warm the pipes.

If your pipes freeze, turn off the water at the shutoff valve. This prevents broken pipes from leaking into your house after they thaw.

Let faucets drip from the cold and hot taps or run water through your indoor faucets – hot and cold – before you go to sleep. Follow your local government’s instructions, which may limit water usage.

Space Heater Safety: Tips to prevent fires

A space heater can be a cost-effective way to stay warm, but it can also be a fire hazard. In the last few years, several fatal fires in Texas were started by space heaters. Here are tips for keeping your family safe.

Inspect Immediately

Always inspect a heater before you use it. Make sure there are no cracked or broken plugs or loose connections. Replace broken parts or the heater itself before use or get a new one.

Not Too Close

Most home heating deaths happened because a space heater was too close to furniture, clothing, mattresses, or bedding. Make sure your heater is at least three feet from anything that can burn.

Outlets Only

Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Don’t use extension cords or power strips. And don’t run the cord under a rug or carpet.

Kids and Pets

Children and pets can knock over a space heater or get too close and burn themselves. Don’t put space heaters in hallways or other places kids or pets

might pass by. And don’t let kids move a heater or adjust the controls.

No Liquids Nearby

Never use or store flammable liquids in the same room as a space heater. And because they’re electric, don’t get near a heater when you’re wet.

Turn It Off

Always turn off your space heaters before you leave the room or go to bed. Look for models that shut off automatically when tipped over.

5 Winter Driving Safety Tips to Keep Your Family Safe

Even in Texas, winter weather can turn your daily commute into an icy obstacle course. These tips can help you stay safe if you take to the road in the cold.

Winterize Early

Check your car before the weather changes. Test your battery, antifreeze, windshield wipers and fluid, headlights and hazards, heater and defroster, brakes, tire pressure, and tire tread.

Check Roads and Weather

You probably have apps for directions and weather, but you can also get road conditions from the Texas Department of Transportation. For weather tips and local conditions, visit the National Weather Service.

Plan Ahead

Leave plenty of time to get where you’re going. If you can wait for better weather, you should. And if there’s a route that lets you avoid bridges, ramps, and overpasses, take it.

Slow Down, Stay Back

Reduce your speed and don’t tailgate. If there’s ice on the road, you’ll need three times as much space to stop. If you do start to skid, steer in the direction of the skid.

Keep an Emergency Kit

If you get stuck, stay in your car. Keep a fully charged cell phone, charger, and a hand-crank or battery-operated radio handy. It can also help to have jumper cables, a spare tire, flares, blankets, a flashlight and batteries, cat litter or sand for traction, food and water, a first-aid kit, and matches.
