VĚSTNÍK

Ennis Sewing Circle Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on October 12, 2006, with 15 members and one guest, Julius Podhrasky. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. A moment of silence was held for Elizabeth Moucka, sister-in-law to Dorothy Kudrna, and Bertha Podhrasky’s sister Annie’s husband passed away. Annie was cousin to President Sadie. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora Pelzel announced our October birthday celebrants—Sadie Kubin, Mildred Trlica, Bertha Podhrasky, and Georgie Morales. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Sadie, Bertha, and Georgie. We hope Mildred had a happy day. President Sadie thanked everyone for all her birthday cards that she received—how nice. We quilted for Dorothy Kudrna— a pretty top pieced by her sister, Evelyn Slovak. It was very easy to quilt. In November, we will quilt the 2007 Junior Sokol Polka Festival quilt. Thank you, quilters. Bertha Podhrasky thanked everyone who attended the Heritage Day at the State Fair in Dallas. It was the largest crowd that they could ever remember having. The SPJST Home Office had a booth and was giving away prizes. Evelyn Cechan from Dallas won the first prize; Libbie Vrla won second prize—a beautiful set of dominoes; and Rose Ann Spann from Fort Worth won fourth prize. I don’t know who won third. They were all excited about winning. A discussion was held on purchasing Christmas gifts for our shut-in members who are nursing home bound. Dorothy Prachyl and Dorothy Kudrna volunteered to do the shopping. Dorothy Booth volunteered to help them deliver the gifts in December. We were all happy to see Sidney Bridewell and her daughter Linda Sidney has been in Waldo. Wisconsin all summer with her other daughter and son-in-law. She had a really good time and had a book of pictures to show. Thank you to Dorothy Kudrna for the donation to the Club for quilting her quilt. Vlasta Laznovsky asked for everyone to try to bring a guest. Everyone

is welcome, and you don’t have to quilt. Just come visit and have lunch with us. We have a good time. We would love to have you join us. I talked to Elizabeth Machovsky. She is getting stronger. Hopefully, she can make our November meeting. We missed all the following— Betty Landsfeld, Esther Cunningham, Libbie Elsik, Mary Krajca, Mildred Krajca, Mildred Trlica, Frances Vinkler, Ella Mae Zmolek, Geraldine Zhanel, Pat Fowler, and Rose Bednar. I hear that Pat Fowler was on vacation, and she always brings Rose Bednar. I also hear that George Zhanel was not feeling well. Geraldine, take care of George. We hope he is okay. Thank you to Libbie Vrla. She brought Halloween decorations for our tables and a pumpkin full of candy. But we had to do a trick to get a piece—not really! The door prize was brought by Sadie Kubin and won by Eleanora Pelzel. She has been really lucky lately. We had a delicious lunch as always. Thank you to Sadie and Vlasta for getting things set-up and thank you to the clean-up group. The rain and cooler weather has been nice. I like it this way. Take care, everyone. I hope to see all of you November 9. Remember, everyone is welcome. You do not have to quilt—just come join us. We will have our regular covered dish lunch. So till November 9, stay well and happy. See you then. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Remember Texas, our Texas on election day There were a lot of meetings on the Trans-Texas Corridor this summer, and if it proved one thing, it was that the majority, an overwhelming majority, of the people are against it. We still have one more chance to voice our opposition, and that is at the ballot box on November 7, 2006. Since the motivating factor behind most of the strong supporters of the corridor is greed, be sure to check out the background of each. Some are gravel pit owners and expect to get rich selling sand and gravel to the corridor contractors. Since it was in the Legislature where the cow ate the cabbage, be sure to check out all of our elected officials from governor to dog-catcher. We already know that it (corridor) is our governor’s pet project to be financed by Spaniards. We also know our (local) representative voted for the corridor and eminent domain, so how about yours? Those candidates with opponents—your choice may be clear. The reason this needs to be addressed in the Vestnik is that it will heavily affect landowners in Bell and Williamson Counties, along the way. I think it’s safe to say that those counties are the bread basket of Texas; not only that, but they are an SPJST stronghold. My heart bleeds for all the families that would be uprooted, and their way of life completely destroyed. Remember, that the corridor is a toll road, so after they steal our land, they will charge us to drive on it making the exploitation by foreigners complete. What it would do to towns along the way like Holland, Bartlett,

Granger, and Taylor is too horrific to consider. There is a plan to build an ethanol plant in Temple so it doesn’t make any sense to destroy now the highly fertile blackland prairie needed to grow the corn to be processed there. The (corridor) contract runs for 50 years, maybe more, by which time gasoline may only be a memory, and alternative fuels will be in. This is Texas, our Texas, and we want to keep it that way. We (Texas) have fought for our independence from the Spaniards before so it seems the fight is still ongoing. In the past, when we (Texas) had transportation problems, we (Texans) were always able to solve them without outside interference. We will do so now and again in the future. I repeat, this is our Texas, and we want to keep it ours. Let that be our rallying cry on Election Day, November 7. Hilda Kuzel Burtis Lodge 15, Buckholts —SPJST—
