SPJST Youth Showcase Talents at State YAD in Temple Approximately 300 SPJST youth
from across Texas met at the Frank W. Mayborn Center in Temple on Saturday, August 5 to showcase their knowledge and skills at the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). The 2006 competition involved participants ages six to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as construction, foods, handicraft, photography, sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is always a surprise until the day of the competition. Participants were each given a rock and several craft supplies, and they were to paint and decorate the rock. District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As they compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with
other youth club members. The SPJST Youth Program is a very important program for Texas youth. The program is helping to shape many of our future leaders, thanks to the contributions of hundreds of adults who volunteer their time to the program. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualify to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs are held in June and July in cities like Caldwell, Seaton, West, Tahoka, Houston, Hallettsville, and Poteet. The grand finale of the 2006 State Youth Achievement Day was the presentation of the 2006-2007 State Royalty Court. Crowned to represent the SPJST in the coming year were King Ryan Edwards and Duke Zachary McManus, both of Lodge 84, Dallas, and Queen Raychel Clark and (Please see State YAD on page 15.)
