new year always brings a sense of anticipation — not because everything suddenly changes on January 1, but because it reminds us of what’s possible when we stay involved and connected. At SPJST, the year ahead is shaped by the people who show up, lend a hand, and take part in the life of their lodges and communities.

Every meeting attended, every project supported, and every connection made helps strengthen the SPJST organization we all love and care about.

Vestnik Valentines One of the simplest ways to connect is through the Vestnik. With Valentine’s Day approaching, we invite members to share a special message with someone they care about. Vestnik Valentines are a longtime favorite, and they’re a wonderful way to brighten someone’s day and remind others they’re appreciated. The deadline to submit your Valentine is January 10, with full details on page 3.

Prizes Needed for Camp Raffle We’re also busy putting together a summer camp raffle to help offset costs for our campers and their families. Camp experiences leave lasting impressions, and we want to make sure as many youth as possible have the opportunity to attend. To make this raffle successful, we’re seeking prize donations valued at $75 or more, or cash donations to help purchase prizes. Every contribution makes a difference. More information is available on page 4, and we appreciate your support.

SPJST Car Show in Belton Later this month, SPJST is proud to sponsor and host the SPJST Car Show during the Home & Garden Show, January 23 to 25 at Cadence Bank Center in Belton. We encourage show vehicles to enter and invite everyone to come out, enjoy the displays, and vote for their favorite cars. Details can be found on page 23.

J.C. & Vicki Dressler Grant Finally, lodges are encouraged to take note of the J.C. & Vicki Dressler Memorial Grant on page 5, offering awards of up to $5,000 for lodge projects. Hats off to Lodge 172, Pasadena, for their initiative in establishing this worthwhile fund.

It’s Your Life

New Year, New Beginning . . .

Not Really 2025 is over, and 2026 is beginning.

We hear it every year: time for resolutions, time for a fresh start, time for a new beginning. New Year’s resolutions—really?

A “new beginning” often becomes a chance to make the same mistakes with a fresh look. Instead of seeing it as a new year, think of it as the next chapter of your life.

Nothing in the past will change. Like a chapter in a book, life moves forward.

Leave behind the things that caused heartache, stress, and disappointment. If someone hurt you, forgive them. After all, they

didn’t end you—they hurt you. Leave it in the last chapter and move on.

Make this new chapter about continuing the good things that have already happened. Look for the sunshine instead of the darkness. Jesus never forgave and then held on to it—He forgave and moved on.

The problem is, we’re human. We tend to dwell on the past, rereading the same chapter over and over again. It’s time to write the next one—the chapter that begins with a new day, the sun rising and casting its warm rays on your face, with the shadows far behind you. The memories of the past become just that—memories.

The new year isn’t about resolutions or “new beginnings.” The future is what you choose to write in your next chapter.

It’s only dark if you write it that way. The past will only haunt you if you carry it

forward onto the next page.

As 2026 gets underway, start your new chapter with good thoughts. Begin by accepting God’s blessings—and sharing them with others. You never know; you may help someone write a brighter chapter in their life after a season of darkness.

Member Engagement News Welcoming 2026 with Purpose Howdy, SPJST Members! 🎉 A New Year of Connection, Purpose, and Possibility January marks a fresh beginning — a time to reflect on all we’ve accomplished and look ahead with renewed energy and hope. As we step into 2026, we celebrate the friendships, fellowship, and fraternal spirit that continue to make SPJST feel like family. This spirit of connection perfectly reflects our Caring Challenges theme, “Gathering Together in Joy,” which will guide us through January, February, and March.

Throughout the past year, our members have shown extraordinary dedication through service projects, lodge gatherings, festivals, and Caring Challenges. Your commitment keeps our lodges thriving and our mission moving forward, and we are grateful for all you do.

On a personal note, this new year feels especially meaningful as Connie, and I had the opportunity to travel to Leavenworth, Washington, in December with my son, daughter-inlove, and granddaughter.

It also marks our nation’s 250th birthday — a milestone that reminds us of the strength that comes from unity.

Throughout 2026, lodges will enjoy special programs, Caring Challenges, and events that encourage fellowship and service. We especially enjoyed meeting Santa Claus and feeding his reindeer at the Reindeer Farm, creating special memories together. It was a joyful reminder of the importance of family, connection, and truly gathering in joy as we begin a new year.

Dear Members, Lodge 4, Hallettsville met Sunday, November 9 at Methodist Church Annex at 3 p.m. with President Joe Siptak presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Resolution Chair Gayenell Chudej read resolutions for Quinton G. Janak and Glenn Wayne Michalcik.

President Siptak recognized guests -

West Territory Manager Ralph Juarez and wife Susana. Mr. Juarez spoke about insurance, annuities, and expressed a need for sales agents in our area. He also answered questions.

Philip Hadash then gave an interesting and informative program on “Czech Remedies.” Members joined in with their family remedies from years ago.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Nanci Hadash reported we have two teams in the Walk Across Texas program which ends in November. She thanked the members for the many canceled stamps and toys for the local St. Nicholas Toy Drive. Our members will participate in the Share the Warmth Caring Challenge and making valentines for the rest home for the first project of 2026, which needs to be brought to the February 1 meeting.

Final plans were made for our bake sale and Christmas party.

Philip Hadash celebrated a birthday in November. Alton and Gayenell Chudej celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary and received a prize.

It was voted to donate a prize for the Moravia Lodge “Save the Hall” fundraiser on March 14.

The bus trip to Naskila Casino by lodge members was a lot of fun, and we plan to go again next year.

All present officers were reelected.

Meeting dates for 2026 were set. They are February 1, May 3, August 9, November 8, and a Christmas party on December 13.

Door prizes were awarded, and a delicious lunch was enjoyed.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood welcomes West Junior Historian Dancers Lodge 6, Cottonwood met Sunday, December 7. President Don Urbanovsky called the meeting to order. All attendees recited the Pledge of Allegiance, the Texas Pledge of Allegiance, and the SPJST Mission, followed by a moment of silence for departed members. At the time of the meeting, there were 25 members, six youth, and nine guests as reported by Flag Bearer Sister Irene Peterson.

January 1, 2026 Monthly reports were given and approved by members present. Correspondence was received from the SPJST Home Office regarding death claims that were recently disbursed. Also, a thank you card was received from the West Library for our donation presented in November. Brother Don reported that he and Brother Bobby Dobecka installed the SPJST Lodge 6 signs on the outside of the building. These signs were given to our lodge by the Home Office. They look great!

Upcoming activities were discussed.

dinner for all volunteers who helped throughout 2025. More details to come in the next Vestnik. Two birthdays were celebrated. We all sang “Happy Birthday” to Sister Pam Urbanovsky and Sister Madison Magouirk.

SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek provided a welcome address and informed all present about the excellent interest rates aligned with the annuities and the insurance products offered. He encouraged anyone interested in more information about these investments to contact Brother Don Cernosek, Sister Jeanette Beseda, or Brother James Nemec.

The lodge was very pleased to host the West High School Junior Historians.

These students are committed to preserving Czech culture through traditional polkas and waltzes. It was wonderful to see the energy and beauty of each dance performance. Three Lodge 6 members were among the dancers. They were Sister Madison Magouirk, Sister Aubrianna Dobecka, and Brother Lucas Beseda. Again, we thank them all for attending our Christmas party.

Delicious Meal Served Following the meeting, the lodge served a turkey and ham meal with lots of yummy side dishes. Thank you to all members who brought delicious desserts to share with all attending.

Doni Powell achieves 25 years of SPJST Home Office service Congratulations to Underwriter Doni Powell for 25 years of service to SPJST Home Office.

She was recognized by the Executive Committee at their meeting on November 19, 2025.

Sister Powell joined the meeting remotely as her supervisor, Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty, read and presented her certificate.

Following the meal, Santa arrived for a visit. The little ones all gathered around and took turns whispering their requests for a toy on Christmas morning.

Old-fashioned fruit and candy bags were distributed. It was very sweet to experience those moments with the children.

Following Santa’s departure, the donated raffle gifts were announced and presented to the winners. Thank you to all participants! Proceeds, which exceeded $240, will be donated to the West Kiwanis Toy Drive for local children to receive gifts on Christmas.

Sister Peggy Dobecka then distributed more than 40 door prizes, and many of us were very grateful to receive these gifts. We had a great turnout and welcome you back for future activities.

Lodge 30, Taiton reviews November business The Lodge 30, Taiton adult and youth meeting was called to order by President Yvonne Marcaurele at 6:50 p.m. on November 4, 2025, at Taiton Community Center. Guest Avery Marcaurele led the Pledge of Allegiance then all joined in a silent prayer for our sick and departed members with Karen Kaspar asking all to join in prayer for our Veterans. Secretary Megan Riha called roll with nine adults, 11 youth, and one guest present. Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer Lisa Bubela reported on the lodge’s financial status. She stated all bills have been paid at this time.

The fraternal activities coordinator reported our youth received the profits from the Taiton Community Center Fall

January 1, 2026 Festival cake walk. This was reported to the Home Office through the Gives app for the youth club matching funds incentive. Upcoming fundraiser/community outreach is the St. John Nepomucene’s games party where Lodge 30 runs the kitchen selling homemade chicken noodle soup, sandwiches, snacks, and coffee. Members were asked to bring items for the silent auction to aid in raising funds for St. John’s youth activities and scholarships. Cooking will begin around 11:30 a.m. It was reported that all is in order for the SPJST Gives incentives for the 2025 year; we are only pending a Vestnik submission and the listing of 2026 officers.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela shared an update regarding Camp Kubena, which has recently been sold. Members expressed appreciation and concern for the benches that had been donated by our membership and were previously located at the camp. District 6 Director Annie Vahalik reported the benches have since been relocated to the Fayette County Fairgrounds, where the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center is located. There, they will continue to be enjoyed by visitors to the grounds.

This led to a discussion about future camping opportunities. With organized camp options now located almost four hours away from our district, Lisa will explore alternative summer outing ideas that would be more accessible for our youth club families. Several enjoyable

SPJST celebrates 96 years of Dora Juarez Molina of Lodge 32, Victoria SPJST celebrates the 96th birthday for Dora Juarez Molina. She is a longtime member of SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria.

Dora was born July 15, 1929, in Beeville, Texas, to Telesforo and Johanna Ortiz Juarez.

She grew up with siblings Robert, Jimmy, and Rodolfo Juarez, learning the importance of family early in life.

On July 1, 1966, Dora married Rosendo Molina in Beeville.

They shared many years together until Rosendo passed in 2001.

Dora and Rosendo raised five beautiful children: Esther J. Garcia and husband Baldemar Garcia; Jessie Luevanos and wife Phyllis S. Luevanos; Margaret denHartog and husband Joseph denHartog; Randy R. Luevanos and wife Lisa S. Luevanos; and Rosendo R. Molina and wife Jennifer Molina.

Raising and providing for her children are Dora’s greatest accomplishments. Her devotion to family remains the foundation of her life.

Dora’s family grew throughout the years. She is blessed with 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Dora worked many years providing patient care in a local hospital. Before retiring, she also helped her husband operate their small family business.

Her hobbies include sewing, reading, and staying informed through the local newspaper. She enjoys traveling throughout Texas to visit family, especially her grandchildren and their families.

Dora is known for her humor and vivid memories from her working years. Her daughter, Margaret denHartog, submitted her mother for this recognition and reflects on her spirit.

“My mother has a wicked sense of humor,” Margaret said. “She can recall many stories from her working years, and I treasure hearing them even as they fade.”

SPJST is honored to recognize Dora Juarez Molina as she celebrates her 96th birthday. Her life reflects dedication, resilience, and a legacy rooted in family and service.

SPJST proudly presents member Agnes Elzner Burge on her 100th birthday. She is a woman whose life reflects service, resilience, and deep family roots.

Agnes was born July 14, 1925, in St. Paul, Texas, to Frank Elzner and Agnes Popelka Elzner. Her siblings were Jerry Elzner, Charlie Elzner, and Anne Elzner, all of whom have since passed.

Her early years were shaped by farm life, where she fondly recalls picking cotton and gathering eggs. These memories remain among her most treasured stories.

A member of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, Agnes has long embodied the fraternal values of faith, family, and community. She met Henry “Hank” Burge, and the two were married September 15, 1950.

They were married for more than five decades before Henry’s passing in 2004. Agnes continues to honor and treasure his memory and life they built together.

Agnes and Henry raised three children: Charlie Elzner Burge, who married Sherrill Sparks Burge; Rodney Burge; and Diane Burge McRae, who married Michael E. McRae. Today,

Agnes enjoys the blessings of seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They are a central joy in her life.

Professionally, Agness dedicated more than 40 years as a registered nurse.

Her career path was made possible through determination and sacrifice.

Notably, her mother sold eggs to help pay for Agnes’ education.

Agnes graduated from Brackenridge School of Nursing, part of the University of Texas at Austin. She served countless patients with compassion and skill.

Agnes was also an avid volunteer.

She volunteered her time to serve at the Dieter Center in Kerrville and many years at her local Catholic thrift store.

She enjoys readings, writing, traveling, and exercising at her local gym, and spending time with family.

Agnes now resides in a local nursing home and continues to welcome visits from friends and family.

SPJST is honored to celebrate Agnes Elzner Burge at age 100. Her life is well lived with a legacy of service and love.

Lodge 107, Floresville New Year’s Eve dance: DJ Lester Gutz Ring in the new year while helping preserve a Floresville landmark! Lodge 107, Floresville will host its “New Year, New Roof” dance fundraiser on Wednesday, December 31, at the SPJST Lodge 107 Hall, 1156 FM 1303.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and dancing begins at 8 p.m. with music by DJ Lester

Gutz. Guests are encouraged to bring snacks to share; tableware and ice will be provided. A 50/50 raffle will also be held.

Tickets are $25 per person (presale only) and available at the Floresville Flower Shop. Proceeds will help repair the lodge’s roof and preserve the historic hall for future generations.

A motion was made to deliver a Christmas turkey or ham to members who are age 85 or older and located within 15 miles of the lodge.

Secretary Maness made the motion to elect all lodge officers by acclamation for the year 2026, and the pay would remain the same. The motion was seconded and passed.

Pay and Christmas gift cards were given to the officers. The meeting was adjourned, and a Christmas social was enjoyed by all.

New Year’s Eve celebration ideas for families The New Year’s Eve countdown is on, with people eagerly awaiting the opportunity to say goodbye to this year and welcome the possibilities of the year ahead. The month of January’s name was derived from the Roman god Janus, who was the god of beginnings, endings, doorways, and transitions. Symbolized by his two faces looking in opposite directions, Janus presided over many transitions.

Billions enjoy celebrating the arrival of a new year. While New Year’s Eve may be known for its raucous nature, complete with overflowing cocktails and packed dance floors, parents looking to celebrate with their young children have plenty of options to turn NYE into a more family-friendly affair. Homemade noisemakers Making noise is part of the fun of welcoming the new year. Kids can get in on the act of crafting their own noisemakers from items that already may be around the house. Collect empty toilet paper or paper towel cardboard tubes for this purpose. Cover one end of the tube with masking tape or a round piece of plastic. Fill the tube with beads, small seashells, rice, or dried beans, leaving enough room for the materials to move around inside the tube. Seal the other end and allow the kids to decorate their noisemakers. Then it’s only a matter of shaking them when it’s time to welcome 2026.

Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in January 1926.

The First Radio Station The first radio station in Ireland, 2RN, begins broadcasting on January 1.

Emergency in Greece General Theodoros Pangalos declares a state of emergency in Greece and assumes dictatorial powers on January 3. General Pangalos had become Prime Minister of Greece in June 1925 after orchestrating a coup d’état.

Great War Great War cemeteries in France are submerged on January 7 due to ongoing downpours affecting various areas throughout Europe. The same rains flood the London subway system as well.

Lucille Henley of Lodge 172, Pasadena achieves Grand Age of 96 SPJST proudly recognizes Lucille Marie Henley of Lodge 172, Pasadena as she celebrates her 96th birthday.

Sister Henley was born Lucille Marie Roznovak on October 8, 1929, in El Campo, Texas, to Annie and Charlie Roznovak.

She grew up with two brothers, Ernest and Charles, and later married Carlos Henley in Pasadena. He passed away in 2001.

Henley and her husband raised two children, Jo Beth Goodrum and Donald Reeves, both now deceased.

Today, she is the proud matriarch of four generations that include two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her family remains the center of her life.

Henley is retired and enjoys attending her great-grandchildren’s football and basketball games. She also spends much of her time with family.

She often reflects on her childhood and remembers her father’s humor.

She recalls his stories fondly.

“My dad told the most wonderful and funny stories,” Henley said. “I have always cherished those memories, and those stories. The ones I re-

member continue to delight me to this day.”

When Henley considers her accomplishments, she points first to her family. She is proud to be the matriarch of four generations that honor their Czech heritage.

Her family roots being in Rybi, Czech Republic.

Henley has traveled widely and has visited 20 countries.

She feels fortunate to have seen so much of the world.

One of her most meaningful experiences was visiting the Czech Republic and traveling to Rybi. She calls the movement unforgettable.

“It was a dream come true,” Henley said.

Henley looks back on her life with gratitude. She speaks of a life shaped by family, culture, and travel.

“I am truly grateful for this life which was filled with wonderful experiences and love,” Henley said. “I have been blessed.”

SPJST celebrates Henley’s milestone and honors her remarkable life and legacy.

The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions is older than many people may realize. According to History.com, the ancient Babylonians are believed to be the first people to make New Year’s resolutions when they began doing so roughly 4,000 years ago during a 12-day festival known as Akitu. That festival was religious in nature, but many people now make resolutions with a goal toward self-improvement unrelated to their faith. As people ponder their resolutions for the year ahead, the following strategies might help them stay the course over the next 12 months.

Prospective Resolutions Give serious thought to a prospective resolution. Statistics regarding New Year’s resolutions vary, but a 2024 survey from the Pew Research Center

found that 13 percent of adults polled indicated they kept none of their resolutions. Numerous variables can affect whether or not a person keeps a resolution, but giving a potential resolution little thought ahead of time can make achieving a goal unlikely. Give any potential change ample thought before committing to a resolution. If you aspire to lose weight, identify the ways you’re going to go about that. Find a local gym to join, identify ways to eat a more nutritious diet and, perhaps most importantly, study how you can make time to stay the course. A little legwork in advance of declaring a resolution can pay off in the long run.

If you aspire to watch less television and read more, resolve to read 100 pages per week and then gradually increase that total if you so desire. Small goals can provide a great means to measure incremental progress that will ultimately make achieving a larger goal more likely.

Host a Firepit Brunch Spending time around the firepit may seem like an activity tailor-made for autumn evenings, but dusk need not have fallen to enjoy an outdoor fire. Dress warmly and gather friends around a firepit or outdoor fireplace. Swap s’mores for cheese cubes on sticks that can be made warm and slightly melted over the open flames.

Float or Paddle Take in nature from the water. Although these types of events may be better in warmer climates, those who are courageous enough to brave the elements can spend some time kayaking or floating on waterways that have not frozen over.

Ski or Ice Skate Head to the slopes or a skating rink.

Winter and skiing or ice skating are a perfect match. Spend the first day of the year testing out fresh powder, practicing double axels or sipping hot cocoa in the ski lodge.

Although the United States National Park Service was not established until 1916, various departments supervised park operations prior to that.

Landscape maintenance, with an estimated cost recovery of 104 percent, and an overall landscape upgrade (100 percent) also yield great returns for homeowners. The NAR® report also noted the effects of such projects related to homeowners’ desire to spend time on their property. Among homeowners who participated in the NAR® report and committed to standard lawn care service, 58 percent indicated they had a greater desire to be at home since completing the project, while 46 percent indicated they have an increased sense of enjoyment when spending time at home.

The LOC contends that Vespucci was the first to suggest that the lands Christopher Columbus sailed to in 1492 were part of a separate continent. German mapmaker Martin Waldseemüller honored Vespucci’s assertion in 1507, when he created a notable map that was the first to depict the lands as a separate continent, naming the area “America,” which is a Latinized version of “Amerigo.” That map is now part of the cartographic collections at the LOC, and is sometimes referred to as “America’s Birth Certificate.”

Miss SPJST leads statewide effort to fight hunger through “Czech Off Hunger” campaign Miss SPJST 2025–2026 Paetyn Beckendorf, 16, is leading a year-long campaign to fight hunger and inspire service across Texas.

Beckendorf launched “Czech Off Hunger” to help hungry families across Texas. She believes hunger continues long after the holiday season ends.

She began serving at the 5 Loaves and 2 Fish Food Pantry in Riesel as a seventh grader. That service then inspired her to continue her efforts in high school.

Earlier this year, she partnered with the pantry during the KWTX Food for Families drive. Her efforts helped raise 26,117.46 pounds of food.

KWTX was thankful and impressed with her service and interviewed her the morning of the event.

Her project now expands to SPJST District 2 and surrounding counties. She invites lodges in Bell, Blanco, Coryell, Falls, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Lampasas, Llano, McCulloch, Mason, Menard, Milam, San Saba, Travis and Williamson counties to join her efforts.

She asks them to support Churches Touching Lives for Christ in Temple.

The group operates the region’s largest food pantry and serves thousands each month at 702 W. Avenue G. Beckendorf hopes to positively impact at least one food pantry in each SPJST district.

“It may not be a lot, but it was more than before,” Beckendorf said. “It’s always the little things that count because they add up. One act of kindness inspires another.”

SPJST Director of Membership Engagement Frank Horak praised her leadership.

“We see a bright future for Paetyn,” Horak said. “She came with a plan before she ever walked on the stage as a candidate competing for the Miss SPJST Royalty title. When Paetyn puts her mind to something, you better move out of the way or join her cause because that’s a girl who’s going to get it done.”

Beckendorf hopes her campaign inspires Texans to take action.

In Memory of Bob Liska Bob George Liska passed away peacefully at home on December 1, 2025, in Dallas, Texas. He was 97 years of age.

Visitation and rosary was at Grove Hill Funeral Home in Dallas on December 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Bob Liska Burial was on De-

cember 9 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ennis at 10 a.m. Interment followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Bob was born on February 19, 1928, to Josef and Filomena (Svehlak) Liska on the family farm outside of Ennis, being the youngest of five children.

Bob grew up on the family farm on Creechville Road, about six miles outside of Ennis. He was a true country boy experiencing things like raising animals for family consumption, working the fields, and riding a pony or horse drawn buggy into town for gatherings, church, family visits, and shopping. enced the Great Depression as a young boy, but never knew that life was a hardship since basic simple needs were being met and everyone else was having the same experiences. Having grown up with tremendous “frugality” meant that the rest of his life would be impacted by such idealism. The many lessons of being self-sufficient, bartering for supplies, not being afraid of hard work, and having faith in God would carry him through the entire rest of his life.

Bob attended Lone Oak School for his elementary years to which he would walk whenever he didn’t have to stay at home to work on the farm. As a teenager, he moved into town to live part time with his brother, Joe Liska, and wife, Mary, in order to be able to attend St. John’s Catholic School from which he graduated in 1945.

Upon graduating from high school, at the age of 17, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, which was the predecessor to the U.S. Air Force. He served from September 1945 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1947, as the country was in peacetime. Under the GI bill, he then attended Texas A&M University for one year before transferring to the University of Houston; from which he would graduate in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering and a minor in Czech language.

His work career spanned from 1952 until around 1995 and included positions as a machine operator in machine shops at companies such as LTV Company and Ruberoid Roofing Co. in his early years, before concluding with 27 years at Pollock Paper Co. as a production scheduler. Bob never really retired, as he served coexisting part time as a sales agent for RVOS Insurance Co. for almost 50 years, until leaving that role when he was nearly 80 years old.

Bob met Sadie Slovacek at the wedding of Johnny Mensik in October 1951.

Sadie was a bridesmaid in the wedding, and Bob asked her to dance. They parted ways and then with Bob’s persistence, they began seeing each other, and after he graduated from the University of Houston in 1952, they got engaged and eventually married on May 26, 1953.

Between December 1954 and June 1966, they welcomed six children – Sadie, Bobby, David, Jimmy, Carol, and Janet.

From 1953 until 1964, Bob and Sadie made their home on Wadsworth in South Dallas. Bob worked at his regular

job and supplemented his income by raising chickens for eggs, as well as processing them for the freezer, and began his sales agent/appraiser career with RVOS Insurance. Sadie stayed at home to raise the children and supplemented the family’s income by sewing new garments and repairing clothing for neighbors and friends, as she was an excellent seamstress. In unison, they managed to save enough money to build their new house in East Dallas and make it their permanent residence from 1964 until their passing.

Bob was a member of numerous social, non-profit fraternal and professional organizations including KJT Society 111, RVOS Lodge 142, SPJST Lodge 84, and Polka Lovers Klub of America (POLK of A).

Bob’s study of the Czech language deepened not only his understanding of the language but of the traditions, stories, and songs that were the heart of the Czech identity. Bob loved to dance polkas and waltzes, and promoted the continued performance of the Czech dance known as the Beseda. Bob’s father, Josef Liska, was teaching the Beseda to many of the Czechs in the Ennis area beginning in the 1930s. The dance is still regularly performed today by numerous groups.

Besides being an excellent dancer, he was also a wonderful singer. Through his love of music, he became the director of the Dallas Czech Singers for 35 years, leading the group in preserving and performing traditional Czech music.

He also helped to coordinate the publishing of the Czech songbook, Pisnicky Ceske (“Czech Songs”), a coordination of more than 100 Czech songs compiled by the Dallas Czech Singers.

Bob never passed up an opportunity to sit and converse or sing in Czech with those who were able to do so especially where there was a cold pivo involved.

In 1969, Bob and Sadie bought a 58acre farm near Ennis. Bob loved being at the farm and spent days there every week for nearly 50 years. He loved to work the land. Bob had a knack for hoeing in the garden, and it seemed as though his hoe was just an extension of his arm. He loved just being outside and really used the farm to his benefit with providing vast amounts of vegetables and fruits for his family from multiple gardens. Bob and Sadie groomed the farm into a place that is still enjoyed by the family today.

His annual klobase-making session was something he really cherished, especially in his later years, as it was a way to spend time with some relatives that meant so much to him. They helped him to make his recipe of klobase and when the work was done, there was plenty of idle time to chat, share memories, and an occasional schlook of slivovice.

The family were members of Holy Cross Catholic Church in the beginning. moving to St. Bernard in the 1960s, and ultimately Bob and Sadie ending up at St. Pius X for the last 25 years. They provided 72 years total of Catholic education to the six children between Holy Cross, St. Bernard, and Bishop Lynch High School.

Bob is preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years, Sadie; his parents, Josef and Filomena (Svehlak) Liska; brothers Joe (wife Mary), Stanley (wife Cecelia), Frank (wife Dolores), sister Betty Landsfeld (husband Wesley); inlaw parents Emil and Sadie (Dusek) Slovacek; brothers-in law Emil and Marvin Slovacek, sister in-law Angie Slovacek; and granddaughter Kristine Erin Liska.

Having lived to 97 years of age he was also preceded in death by a number of nieces and nephews.

He is survived by children Sadie Bell and husband Rusty, Bobby J. Liska, David Liska and wife Diane, Jimmy Liska and wife Theresa, Carol Scott and husband Clint, and Janet Songer and husband Scott; grandchildren TJ Bell (Brianna), Adam Bell, Jarrod Norton (Mary), Nathan Liska (Ashley), Sherry Miller (Tim), Ashley Colunga (Jordan), Matthew Chappel (Jennifer), Elizabeth Goldman (Ernest), Cody Scott (Kate), Cassidy Scott, Carson Scott, Landry Songer (Claire), and Gabriel Songer; great-grandchildren Shawn Norton, Kaylee Norton, Braden Miller, McKinley Miller, Sydney Miller, Brox Colunga, Lowe Colunga, Addison Bell, Hudson Bell, Peyton Goldman, Bennett Chappel, and Ian Chappel; and numerous nieces, nephews, and family friends.

In Memory of Dr. James Novak Dr. James Wayne Novak, DDS, 73, passed away December 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was born and raised in Ennis and grew up in a closeknit and supportive Czech community.

Those roots remained an important part of his identity throughout his life, even as he later made Dallas his home with his cherished wife Lynda.

Dr. Jim Novak Jim graduated from St. John High School in 1969 and went on to Navarro Junior College, where he earned a place on the Dean’s List and received the President’s Honor Award for outstanding scholastic achievement. After attending North Texas State University, he decided to earn his Doctorate at Baylor College of Dentistry in 1975.

Jim built and maintained his downtown Dallas practice until retiring in 2017. For many years, he successfully balanced his family life, dental practice, and the continuation of the family farm in Ennis. Working the farm led him to travel to Paris for the first time where he fell in love with international travel. For years, he spent evenings and weekends planning his trips to China, Germany, Italy, Jerusalem, France, Egypt, Dubai, Austria, Switzerland, Croatia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, and countless cities across the country. But Paris was the city he travelled to most.

Jim was a good cook, charcoal grill master, and true Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks fanatic. He loved fishing and hunting with his dad, brother, and children.

After retirement, Jim hit his personal record of diapers changed, baby bottles filled and hours of babysitting. It was rare to see Jim without a camera in his hand. Those same moments he filmed “annoying” his children will be cherished for years to come.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Lynda Novak, who surrounded him each day faithfully by his side at home until his peaceful passing. Jim and Lynda have four children: Meribeth Banaschik, Christopher Novak, JJ Novak,

and Jamie Patselov. Together they have four grandchildren: Molly Novak, Luke Banaschik, Lainey Novak, and Alina Patselov. He is survived by his sister Marita, brother Ken, and aunt Jeri Anne Kopecky who met once a month for years with their respective spouses for dinner and fun events.

A rosary was prayed to celebrate his life at Sparkman Hillcrest on Thursday, December 11 at 5 p.m. (visitation 4-6 pm). Funeral services were held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on Friday, December 12 at 10 a.m. followed by the burial at Sparkman Hillcrest. Family and friends were invited to gather in celebration of Jim’s life at their home following the burial.

In Memory of Jolie Paprskar Mozingo It is with profound sadness and an overwhelming sense of loss we share that Jolie Marie Mozingo passed away unexpectedly at her home early Sunday morning, November 2, 2025, at the age of 47.

Visitation was Jolie Mozingo from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11 in the Sandburg Room at Mount Olivet Chapel in Fort Worth, Texas. Funeral was at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12 at Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Born July 21, 1978, in Wichita Falls and welcomed into the family by John E. and Joy L. Paprskar, Jolie was a friend to everyone she met. From an early age while growing up in Hurst, she highly valued her friendships and maintained many of them up to her untimely passing.

For over 20 years, Jolie worked in the dental field managing the front office of several local dental practices. She took great pride in doing her job well; she picked up new skills quickly and often trained others. Co-workers and patients quickly became friends, and she kept the office running smoothly with her signature mix of humor and organizational skills.

Jolie married Jason L. Mozingo, a dedicated firefighter and paramedic, on October 3, 2009, in Fort Worth. Together, they raised their son, Brayden Cole, who was the light of her life. Jolie always loved children and being a mom came naturally to her. She was immensely proud of Jason and Brayden and spoke of them often to her friends, family, and co-workers.

A true people person, Jolie loved socializing, keeping her friends close, and making new memories wherever she went. She loved to play pranks on people, and thrived on staying busy with shopping, going out to eat, and finding any reason in life to celebrate. She took advantage of every adventure life had to offer her.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

Jolie was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Michael and Helen Paprskar; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Beavers.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jason Mozingo; son Brayden Mozingo; parents John and Joy Paprskar; brother Jon Eric Paprskar; along with countless friends and co-workers.

Everyone who met Jolie was a friend for life; she will live on through the many memories we had the privilege of making with her.

Her absence leaves an emptiness that words can hardly express, but her love, laughter, and kindness will forever live in the hearts of those who knew her.

In Memory of Arnold Sefcik Arnold Tom Sefcik, age 98, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 22, 2025, at his residence in Nashwauk, Minnesota, where he had resided for the last four and one-half years of his life.

A small funeral service for close friends and family was held at Hillcrest Arnold Sefcik on December 5 at 1 p.m. with Reverend John Weiher officiating. An internment of remains of both Arnold and Emilie will take place in the spring at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

Arnold was born on September 18, 1927, in Cooks Point, Texas, to John and Stasie (Ondrasek) Sefcik. Arnold grew up going to school and helping his family with farming chores. He served in the Army Signal Corp division in World War II, where he learned and transmitted Morse Code. On May 23, 1950, he married the love of his life, Emilie Houdek, of Caldwell. Not long after, the couple moved to Texas Citys where they worked and raised their family of five children. Arnold also attended night school in Texas City so that he could attain his high school diploma, since he was unable to do so before called into the service. Arnold held various occupations, including carpet installer and furniture upholsterer, before being hired by Monsanto Oil Refinery/Sterling Chemicals, where he later retired.

After retirement, he worked at Mainland Center Hospital driving the shuttle.

Arnold also volunteered at the hospital with the Senior Friends Association. He was a proud blood donor having donated so many gallons of blood that the local newspaper ran a front page cover story of him.

Arnold was an active member of the Czech organizations SPJST and KJZT where enjoyed attending social meetings and working to help host polka dances at the local SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena. Arnold, along with wife Emilie, were also very active at the area Nessler Rec Center where they went to play 42 dominoes and other activities often. He loved listening and dancing to

January 1, 2026 polka music, barbecueing, and traveling.

He and Emilie also enjoyed going to the area casinos every now and then. Arnold was very proud of his Czech heritage and made sure that his children were as well. He had a strong love for his family, and nothing made him happier than spending time with them.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents John and Stasie Sefcik; wife Emilie; son Carl Sefcik; daughter Teresa Smith Sefcik; sibling Mildred Houdek; sisters-in-law Annie Meschewitz, Helen Supak, Gerry Sefcik, and Kay Houdek; and brothers-in-law Daniel Houdek, Ed Meschewitz, Emil Supak, Stanley Houdek, Ludwig Houdek, Ben Houdek, and JP Watson.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club helps with annual games party On Sunday, December 7, 2025, Lodge 30, Taiton helped with the St. John’s Altar Society Annual Games Party. It was a fun afternoon of bingo and selling raffle tickets.

We even had a special visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus!

Our lodge also worked to make and serve the yummy nudlová polévka and desserts. It was a great way to show how SPJST helps within our community.

The Temple Christmas Parade was amazing, and I had the great pleasure of being in it! I felt as if I was in a wonderland. Several SPJST members were there, from young to old, and of course, the royalty. The people at the Home Office had decorated for Christmas, and they were very nice.

We judged the doors at the Home Office and decided to judge them based on categories. We thought this way it was fair for everyone to get their works of art on their door noticed, aligning perfectly with my service project of reaching people through art.

We also visited the Czech Heritage Museum next to the Home Office. It had very interesting history packed into that building. Next, we had prepared for the parade by filling our bellies full of food.

I wish that I wore something warmer, like a scarf and some warm gloves. Besides the cold, it was a delight being in the parade. I felt a feeling only one could describe as festive, almost like a Hallmark movie. The ride was nice, but again, I should’ve worn something to fight against the wind. It was overall an enjoyable experience and I would love more opportunities to do things like this again.

I got to be part of the Christmas parade in Temple this year, riding on the SPJST float, and honestly, it was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in a long time.

The whole thing took place at night, which made all the lights look even brighter and more magical. Everywhere I looked, there were people bundled up in big blankets, looking so warm and cozy while I was standing there with my hands freezing off—but somehow, that just added to the whole Christmas vibe.

One of the things that made the night even better was watching Mr. SPJST himself, Levi McAdams, having the absolute time of his life. He was laughing nonstop, waving at everyone, and bringing this energy that spread through the entire float.

Seeing him enjoy it so much made the whole experience even more fun for me.

You could feel how excited he was, and it rubbed off on all of us.

There were so many people lining the streets—way more than I expected— which made the parade feel big, lively, and full of holiday spirit. Every time the float moved forward, someone would cheer, wave, or shout something festive, and it made the night feel like a true big-city celebration.

Overall, being part of the SPJST float was unforgettable. Even with my freezing hands, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
