Happy 109th and many, many more

PJST is celebrating its 109th birthday this year, so let’s celebrate! Make plans to attend the SPJST Statewide Barbecue Cook-Off and Summer Fair on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. The fun begins Friday evening at 8 p.m. with The Muddcatts. They are an entertaining band that will rock and roll! And, $3,000 is up for grabs in the barbecue cook-off. Plus, a silent auction will be held for the SPJST Scholarship Fund. For more information on the event, including how to enter the cook-off or how to donate an item to the silent auction, see pages 3, 8, 9, and 18. See you in Seaton on the 14th and 15th! Thanks, Temple Daily Thanks to the Temple Daily Telegram for its news coverage of SPJST’s events. It was great to meet Allison and Emily (see photo below), who covered the recent Home Office Flag Day ceremony. We always enjoy working with everyone at the Telegram, and we very much appreciate the news coverage.

Generation to Generation Thanks to the Historical Society

of the Dallas Czech Club, SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas member John Vrla, and Lodge 47, Seaton member Joyce Moore for sharing the Club’s reprinted cookbook “Generation to Generation” with the Vestnik. The 248-page book includes Czech recipes as well as popular recipes of the 1980s. The book is also filled with interesting information about the history and traditions of the Czech culture. There’s a section that features a menu for a Texas Czech wedding and a section on entertaining at home with Czech flair. The history part of the book includes information about kroj, taroks, and Czech dances, weather sayings, and old-time home remedies. For more information about the cookbook and how to order a copy, see page 29. Meet Miss Kendall Lyne The Vestnik incorrectly identified Miss Kendall Lyne Tucker in last week’s issue. Her correct information appears on page 13 of this week’s Vestnik. I had the pleasure to meet this beautiful young infant at the District Three YAD on June 25 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. We apologize for the incorrect information in last week’s article. Behind the scenes! Thanks to Temple Daily Telegram Photographer Allison Slomowicz, left, and Reporter Emily Messer, center, for attending the SPJST Flag Day ceremony. They are pictured with Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny. The June 15 Telegram featured photos and an article on the ceremony.

Celebrate SPJST’s 109th birthday in July

7

FROM THE SUPREME LODGE PRESIDENT

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Birthday, SPJST! Founded by Czech pioneers in La Grange, Texas, in 1897, the SPJST observed its 109th birthday on July 1. Thanks to a lot of good men and women who preceded us and to the many who are with us today, the Society continues to grow and make a positive difference in the lives of its members and the communities that they seek to serve. What better way to mark this occasion than to pay tribute to our founders and to the high ideals of fraternalism that we seek to instill and fulfill.

What It’s All About “Fraternalism” — you see and hear that word a lot in the SPJST. Apart from the special tax treatment we receive from the IRS, what does fraternalism really mean? The word itself comes from the Latin word “fraternus” which means “relating to brothers.” Fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are founded upon the simple, kind and loving idea that every individual is his “brother’s keeper” and that each of us has a responsibility to each other. It was this “spirit of doing good to each other” that inspired the idea of fraternal societies. In ancient Greece, this spirit of brotherhood was expressed in loosely organized and semi-religious societies which provided financial aid to their members in time of sickness and death. These early societies had another purpose, too. They recognized the social need of companionship and friendly gatherings. Fraternalism is a good idea that has simply evolved to fit the times. The American fraternal benefit system began in 1868 in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Jordan Upchurch, a railroad master mechanic, organized the first lodge of a fraternal life insurance society in the United States — the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Included in the Upchurch program was a plan to provide members with protection for their dependents. The story of its success spread and similar organizations were organized in other cities and states. The SPJST in Texas Between 1834 and 1900, approximately 200,000 people of Czech descent immigrated to America. A lot of those people settled in Texas. The Texas Czech immigrants settled in some 250 communities scattered

across the fertile Blackland Prairie. Texas’s Coastal Plain also attracted hundreds of families. In 1853, the first Czechs settled in Fayetteville, located midway between Austin and Houston. The city is known as the “cradle of Czech immigration to Texas” because after the Civil War most Czech immigrants to Texas went to Fayetteville first. The Czech immigrants and their families stuck together. During the 1880s and 1890s, many of the Texas Czechs joined a nationwide fratenal order called the C.S.P.S. — the Cesko-Slovanska Podporujici Spolecnost — which is today known as the Czechoslovak Society of America (CSA). By 1897, there were 27 C.S.P.S. lodges in Texas. In spite of the rapid growth of the C.S.P.S. in Texas, there was some discontent among members from Texas and the Midwest. The primary concern was that C.S.P.S. insurance premium guidelines favored the industrial workers in the eastern part of the United States. Texas C.S.P.S. members I.J. Gallia and J.R. Kubena led the efforts to reform the national C.S.P.S. Shortly after the 1896 C.S.P.S. convention, Texas Czechs gathered in La Grange, Texas and set about the task of forming a new fraternal organization. Augustin Haidusek, Frank Cihal and J.R. Kubena were charged with the responsibility of drafting a constitution. In March of 1897, the constitution was submitted to the Texas C.S.P.S. lodges for consideration. Seven of the 25 C.S.P.S. lodges approved the constitution and withdrew from the older society. Official records indicate that the SPJST — Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas — started operations on July 1, 1897 with 782 members and 25 lodges. The SPJST actually received its Texas charter on August 12, 1897 and its first base of operations was located in Fayetteville. The central figure in administering the affairs of the Society, Secretary J.R. Kubena, had his business located in Fayetteville. Until his death in 1938, Kubena administered the affairs of the SPJST out of a single room in his general store. From the beginning, SPJST made a positive difference in the lives of its members, providing them with the security of fraternal life insurance and the value-added benefit of belonging

to a progressive social organization. In many families, the SPJST became an important part of life. During the SPJST’s first half century, American society and lifestyles changed dramatically. Texas and our nation was becoming progressively more industrialized. Many people — including the sons and daughters of our early members — moved off of the farms and into the towns and cities. In many cases they took the SPJST with them! It was during this period that many of our urban lodges were chartered. It was also during this time — in 1953 — that the SPJST relocated its Home Office to Temple. In the latter half of the Twentieth Century, the SPJST continued to provide its members with the security of fraternal life insurance and a sense of cultural identity. The legacy of that era — the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, the SPJST Youth Program and various cultural enrichment programs — including the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum — remain with us today. Achieving success in the future will be a challenge for our Society and for our lodges. Just as the SPJST’s forefathers learned to adjust, the SPJST members are responding to meet the needs of its members in these changing times. In lodges all over the state, members are committing their time and energy to support worthwhile causes. They are taking the best that the SPJST has to offer — a tradition of helping people to care for their families — and are extending these values to their communities. Just look at any typical issue of the Vestnik and you can see SPJST fraternalism is for real. Not just pretty words on an ancient scroll — but noble and kind-hearted deeds. This was so evident on Join Hands Day — the first Saturday in May — this year when 27 SPJST lodges and youth clubs worked with other community service organizations to make a positive difference in their respective communities. That was wonderful. Thank you to all of the men, women, boys and girls who pitched in to lend a hand on that special day and throughout the year in your lodges and youth clubs. Keep up the good work!

VĚSTNÍK Strength in Numbers The SPJST is strong financially and fraternally. Those aren’t just words. We have the numbers to back it up. Nearly $136 million in life insurance was written in ’05. Total life insurance in force at year-end was almost $700 million — nearly threequarters of a billion dollars. Thanks to the determined efforts of our insurance sales force and those in the lodges who assist them, the SPJST is fast approaching one billion dollars of insurance in force. We are also strong fraternally. The SPJST and its 116 lodges located throughout Texas continue to embrace the strong family and cultural ties that were instrumental in building the Society. Promoting Czech heritage and culture also remains important to the SPJST. In the last year alone, the SPJST has been actively involved in supporting a number of regional and statewide heritage events, including Heritage Day at the State Fair in Dallas, the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio, the National Polka Festival in Ennis; the Caldwell Kolache Festival in Caldwell and several events sponsored by the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, the Czech Cultural Center of Houston and the American Sokol Organization. What helps to make these projects and many other SPJST benefits — including our summer camp, scholarship program possible and lodge incentive program possible is our members who buy insurance. A significant percentage of the profits from the company are directed back into activities like those mentioned and so many others across the state. Our fraternal services report which was filed with the National Fraternal Congress of America in March, shows that our 116 SPJST lodges and 48 youth clubs throughout the state conducted 7,781 fraternal acts and projects in the year 2005. Those are some very impressive numbers! Another impressive number that I would like to share with you is this spring, the SPJST Scholarship Program achieved a landmark. Since the program began in 1983, more than $1 million in college scholarships have been awarded to more than 1,600 young SPJST

scholars throughout the state. That's thanks to you, your membership and your support of the SPJST Scholarship Program. Now, Let’s Celebrate! On July 14 and 15, the Society hosts its Annual Statewide Barbecue CookOff and Summer Fair at Seaton Star Hall, located five miles east of Temple, just off Highway 53. Please consider this your personal invitation to join in the fun! Festivities begin on Friday, July 14 at 7 p.m. with familyoriented entertainment by Johnnie Mandell and the Muddcatts. If you missed Elvis and the Beatles the first time around, this is your chance to enjoy a real treat! Silent Auction to Benefit Scholarship Program In addition to the Barbecue CookOff, we are holding a Silent Auction to support the SPJST Scholarship Program. I hope that you will consider donating an item or service for the auction. Of course, your donation is

tax deductible. All contributors will receive recognition at the two-day event. Donors contributing $100 or more will receive special recognition. Please note that there will not be an SPJST Statewide Golf Tournament this year. The silent auction is being held in lieu of that fund-raising event. If you, your lodge or youth club would like to donate a silent auction item, please contact someone in the Fraternal Department and we will make arrangements for pick-up. Also, if you would like to enter a cooking team in the contest or if you have any questions, please give us a call. Again, Happy Birthday, SPJST! Always remember to forget The troubles that passed away. But never forget to remember The blessings that come each day. — Author Unknown Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

VĚSTNÍK

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DEPARTMENT

State FAC: None of us is as good as all of us Dear Members, Please note: There will not be an SPJST Statewide Golf Tournament this year; however, there will be a two-day silent auction held in conjunction with the Statewide Barbecue Cook-Off. 100 percent of the silent auction proceeds and cash donations received in conjunction with the State Barbecue Cook-Off will go to support the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Since its inception in 1983, the SPJST Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1 million in college scholarships to more than 1,600 deserving boys and girls. All contributing lodges and youth clubs will receive recognition at the event. Donors contributing $100 or more will receive special recognition. If your lodge or youth club would like to donate a silent auction item, please contact me or Tammy, and we will make arrangements for pick-up. Please refer to the Vestnik for the SPJST State Barbecue Cook-Off information that will be held at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton on July 14 and 15 or call us at (800) 727-7578 for an entry form. This will be a big event and lots of fun for the entire family. We’d love to see a lot of our lodges and youth clubs enter cooking teams this year. You’ll see that there is lots of prize money to be won! How Far Ahead Do You Plan? Looking Ahead to October . . . Your lodge’s activity calendar is simply a road map of the things you are going to do in the coming weeks and months to improve your fraternal program. You may want to consider, if you haven’t done so already, observing Czech Heritage Month at your October meeting. It can be an annual way for your lodge to salute our Society’s founders and its Czech cultural heritage. A lot of lodges and organizations already host Czech Heritage Month observances in the month of October. Here is something else to consider: On Sunday, October 8, the Texas State Fair in Dallas observes Heritage Day. In addition to all of the regular Fair Park activities, many nationalities — including Czech — will be celebrated in a day-long program of dance and entertainment. This celebration has been going on for many years. As in past years, many SPJST members in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be helping out with this year’s event.

The SPJST Home Office will also be lending its support. We’d love to have you come out and join us. Watch your Vestnik for details as they become available. Last Call: FACs Requested to Submit Pink Mid-Year Form Lodge FACs, take note: The pink Mid-Year Form which is on page 10 of your FAC Reference Guide is due to the SPJST Home Office on July 14. Thanks to the many who have already submitted these reports. Please take a few minutes to look over the form. If you have any questions or require assistance in filling out the form, please contact me at (210) 413-3053 or Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at (800) 727-7578. Your District FACs are also available to assist you. It has been a very enjoyable and an exciting time for me. Thanks to everyone in the Home Office and out in the field for your kind reception and input. Part of my time has been spent getting oriented to the job and part of it has been spent out on the road, meeting with our lodge members, officers, directors, and other groups important to the SPJST. As State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, I want to work with your lodge and help you meet your incentive program goals and build a more satisfying fraternal program. I’m also here to provide lodge officer training and refresher courses and to help your lodge meet its various reporting requirements. Finally, I want you to know that any time you’ve got an idea for building the lodge’s fraternal program, you can call on me for support.

That’s why I’m here. That’s why the Home Office is here. I heard someone say last week at the Texas Fraternal Congress meeting in Austin, “None of us is as good as all of us.” Here’s something else to consider. At some of the meetings that I have been attending, we have been conducting brainstorming and lodge officer training sessions. These are excellent refresher courses, and I would like to set up sessions with any lodges

Fayette County Cemeteries Receive Historic Texas Designation

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) recently honored nine Fayette County cemeteries with the designation of Historic Texas Cemetery (HTC). The distinction means the cemetery has been legally recorded through the THC’s Historic Texas Cemetery program, an important step in ensuring its preservation. This designation is reserved for cemeteries that are at least 50 years old and documented through the Historic Texas Cemeteries process to record their historic association and significance. “The designation is a tool that will increase public awareness of these important cultural resources,” said Larry Oaks, executive director of the THC. “Awareness and education are among the best ways to guarantee the preservation of a cemetery.” A reception, hosted by the Fayette County Historical Commission (FCHC), was held Friday, June 9 where representatives of the Fayetteville City Cemetery, Freyburg Cemetery-Sons of Hermann at Freyburg, Freyburg United Methodist Church Cemetery, Kaase Family Cemetery, Praha SPJST Cemetery, St. John’s Catholic Church Cemetery at Fayetteville, St. Martin Cemetery at Warrenton, St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery at Ellinger, and Salem Memorial Cemetery at Freyburg were presented with official designation certificates. Fayette County Historical Commission member Lillie Mae Brightwell was also honored at the reception. “Ms. Brightwell secured the HTC designations for these nine cemeteries through her thorough research and documentation of each cemetery,” said Kathy Carter, FCHC chairman. “Lillie Mae is very dedicated to this program and has previ-

ously secured designations for the Czech National Cemetery at Fayetteville and the Ross Prairie Czech Moravian Brethren Church Cemetery.” Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka was on hand to thank Brightwell and congratulate the representatives of the cemeteries. Other official Historic Texas Cemeteries in Fayette county are Black Jack Springs, Pin Oak, Brandt Family, Halamicek, Navidad Baptist, Old Plum Grove, Pagel, Sts. Peter and Paul Old Catholic, and Woods Prairie. Cemeteries hold valuable historical information. They are often the last reminders of early settlements’ historical events, religious beliefs, lifestyles and genealogy. While the Historic Texas Cemetery designation encourages cemetery preservation, it cannot guarantee that a historic cemetery will avoid destruction. Threats to cemeteries include urban expansion and development, vandalism, grazing animals and long-term deterioration for weather

and uncontrolled vegetation. The THC developed the Historic Texas Cemetery designation to address the destruction of historic cemeteries and the illegal removal of cemetery features. Any individual or organization is eligible to submit an application for this designation. For more information, or to receive an application for a Historic Texas Cemetery designation, contact Gerron Hite at (512) 475-4167 or e-mail gerron.hite@thc.state.tx.us. Texas Historical The Commission is the state agency for historic preservation. The agency administers a variety of programs to preserve the archaeological, historical and cultural resources of Texas. She then adjourned the meeting. Other News Eleanora Pelzel is proud of her granddaughter, Alison Pelzel, who graduated from Palmer High School in May. Her other granddaughter, Brenna Pelzel, from Corsicana ran in the 5K woman’s division Polka Festival Run. She was one of the top 10 to finish, and she received a trophy. Congratulations! Esther Cunningham was telling us a wonderful story about her husband, Robert, who will be celebrating his 75th birthday on August 6. He is a runner and has been running for the past 20 years in paid running races. He started running in 1985 when he retired from the postal system as a letter carrier for 26 years. Robert has already ran in over 900 races and is working to run 1,000 races before he stops. Congratulations, Robert. That is really something. We will be waiting to hear when you reach that 1,000 mark. Wilma and Frankie Vrla, I saw your beautiful granddaughter’s graduation picture in the Vestnik. We know you are proud. On June 17, my grandson, Kyle, was married to Karen Pillans at the First Baptist Church in Corsicana, Texas. The reception followed in the fellowship hall. Everything was so

VĚSTNÍK beautiful. Kyle and Karen make such a nice couple. Kyle was so handsome, and Karen was beautiful. We have had such a wonderful time leading up to this special event—all the parties, rehearsal dinner, then the wedding and reception. We thank our Dear Lord for His blessing on this couple. It has truly been a beautiful and wonderful time in our family. I wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July. Remember, July 13—your sale items, show and tell, covered dish for lunch and lots of money. Also, try to bring a friend. See you then! Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

State Youth Director: YADs, camps in full swing Dear Youth Leaders, We’re off to a flying start with our 2006-2007 SPJST youth year! During the month of June alone, we have experienced and enjoyed Leaders-inTraining (LIT) Retreat at YMCA Hamman Ranch, Youth Achievement Days in District Four and District Three, and two great district camps in District Six and District Seven. That’s in addition to all of the chaperone training and local lodge activities that have also been taking place. Whew! Call (800) 727-7578 SPJST youth club members to come out and have fun and acquire some valuable team working skills. Thanks for your positive feedback on several of the sessions, including the closing campfire skits, shelter construction, and low ropes initiative challenges. And, how about those cabins! They were great. Thanks to all of the LITs and chaperones for doing their parts in keeping the cabins neat and tidy the whole time we were at camp. I believe one of the best things about LIT retreat this year was the fact that our chaperones were able to participate and get to know the LITs better since the YMCA staff helped run the program for us. I hope that everyone had a good time and the training that the LITs received will serve them well at the summer camps. Reminder to the LITs: Your LIT tee-shirts will be sent to your DYCs soon. When you get your tee-shirt, I want you to wear them with pride. I expect to see all of you wearing your tee-shirt at camp this year to show that you are proud to be part of the LIT program. Participation in the LIT program is an honor and a privilege.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club elects officers Dear Readers, On Monday, June 19, 2006, the youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met for their monthly meeting. Since we were starting a new year, my mom led the meeting so that we could cover everything she had on her to-do list. First thing after the meeting was

brought to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, we elected new officers for 2006-07. They are: President Ryan Edwards Vice President Rachel McManus Secretary Scott Cowan Treasurer Melinda McClellan Reporter Elisabeth Cowan Flag Bearer Zachary McManus Sergeant-at-Arms Jason Sims We then discussed old and new business, suggestions for community service projects, and social ideas. After the meeting was adjourned, we went into the mother lodge meeting and led them in the Pledge of Allegiance before going to have snacks. Respectfully, Elisabeth Cowan, age 10 Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 162, Iowa Colony Youth Club Visits Wildlife Park By Avery Moyle On Saturday, May 7, 2006, our youth club went to the Bayou Wildlife Park, located in Alvin, Texas. We had a blast! There were so many animals to feed, and the trolley ride was the most fun. We had

animals running alongside and behind the trolley because we had feed buckets. You could feed the animals right out of the bucket. We were also joined with members from the adult lodge who had

just as much fun as we did, especially Pa Pa Jess. He was really fascinated by all the animals and that the wildlife park is located so close to home. After our visit at the Bayou

Wildlife Park, a group of us went to CiCi’s Pizza in Alvin for dinner. Thanks to my mom and Youth Leader Brenda Moyle, for scheduling such a fun day. Let’s do it again soon. —SPJST—

Přivítala oslavenkyni Ninu Jane KašíkovouLedbetter a president našeho řádu jí odevzdal odznak a blahopřáni. Czech can be offered in your high school

Attention, teachers: the Czech Republic needs you

If you want your high school student to take Czech, contact your high school principal. Czech is offered through distance learning from Flatonia High School to schools in Texas and out of state. Czech I, II, and III are offered for high school foreign language credit. For Czech to be offered as a foreign language in your school, parents of children in the school must go and ask the principal to offer the language. SPJST offers a mini grant to help support the classes for textbooks and other needed supplies for distance learning. Flatonia High School has been offering Czech for the past six years. The schools that are currently in the program are Flatonia, Granger, Marlin, and West High Schools. So do not delay, ask your principal to offer Czech. Have your principal contact principal Kathy Orsak at kathyorsak@yahoo.com, and classes in Czech can be offered at your high school. —SPJST—

The Czech Republic needs you! Yes, you. If you are interested in teaching English to Czech people, then this is for you. You can contact the Jan Amos Komensky Academy at 17 Listopadu 1, 690 02 Breclav, Czech Republic; or e-mail akademie.breclav@mybox.cz. They will provide you with an apartment plus a monthly salary. All you need is a college or university degree, and it doesn't have to be in teaching, but that would be a plus. Live in Breclav and teach at schools, firms as well as at the Akademie. Breclav is in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic and known as the “Italy” of the republic where grapes, apricots, and peaches grow. John A.
