SPJST writes 341 applications through February in Vision 2002 program Through the end of January, the SPJST had received applications for 341 insurance and annuity certificates.

Over the same period, 313 certificates were issued. The goal of the Vision 2002 membership drive is to write at least 2,100 applications in 2002.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Vision 2002 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club

Quota," applies to those lodges with active youth clubs and reflects the number of applications write for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals will be applied toward the lodge's total quota.

An asterisk (*) denotes that the lodge does not have a youth club. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count" reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through January 31, 2002 —SPJST-

SPJST records 200 referrals through February in Vision 2002 program To help achieve the objectives of the Vision 2002 program, several incentives are being offered. Members who make referrals that result in written applications will be recognized as follows: • Recruit One Member - Name in Vestnik.

• Recruit Three Members - Name and photograph in Vestnik.

• Recruit Six Members - Name and photo in Vestnik, eligible for drawing for 10 (ten) $50 cash prizes.

• Recruit 10 Members - Name and photo in Vestnik, eligible for drawing for 10 (ten) $100 cash prizes.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on March meeting Hi! Our meeting was called to order by President, Johnnie Krizan, on Sunday, March 10, 2002. Our Pledge of Allegiance was led by Courtney Halbert and the Youth Club, with our motto given by Traci Dobecka.

Our Flagbearer, Sister Georgie Soukup, reported that 36 members and five guests present at our meeting.

Welcome to Kenneth Peterson, Matthew Peterson, Kathy Moon, Wilma Kahanak and Robert Kahanak.

Looking forward to seeing you folks again at our meetings, socials and other activities. Thanks to all the folks who came in that day to enjoy an afternoon with us. Before the activities ended, we probably had around 100 people to enjoy the Easter egg hunt and meal.

Our Secretary, Sister Barbara Hykel, read the minutes from our last meeting. They were approved as read. She also read some correspondence. There were thank you notes from the George Sulak family and from Lucille Sulak and family. Also two thank you notes from the West Volunteer Fire Department and the Ross Volunteer Fire Department for the donations given to them from our lodge.

Brother Johnnie Krizan called upon Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, for her report. Her report was approved as given. Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary, gave his report of two new members. Thanks to Brothers Johnnie Krizan and Jerry Kucera.

Welcome to our new members. Brother George also reported bookings for April with lodge socials on the 5th and 19th at 6:30 p.m. He also reported that the next trustee's meeting would be on Friday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Brother Jerry Kucera, State Field Representative, was called upon for an insurance report. Brother Jerry reported that there were 2,379 applications written in 2001 for more than $64 lion and that we went over our quotas in District Three. He also reported that Lodge 6 only had seven members to date for this year—which was slow—but encouraged the sales representatives to start working towards meeting their quotas for this year. He also thanked the sales representatives for all their hard work last year in meeting and surpassing their goals.

Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Hykel, reported that she and Sisters Peggy Dobecka, Stella Perez, and Brother Ray Perez attended the officers workshop at Elm Mott on the exemption of taxes. Sister Barbara mentioned that the lodge had to be at least 51 percent charitable in order to get the exemption. She encouraged everyone to keep his fraternal acts records and turn them in to her monthly if possible. This will help her in keeping all the paperwork in line for the lodge and its members for the Supreme Lodge reporting.

Sister Barbara also mentioned the Lifetime Achiever Award, which can be presented to as many as five people in the lodge. She said that it would be presented at the District Three Spring Meeting. She also mentioned that Sister Gladys Yates, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, suggested sending invitations to new members.

Our lodge has voted to do that.

Sister Barbara also mentioned that Sister Bessie Petr was presented a watch and plaque for her 50 years of service as the District Three Youth Counselor. She also mentioned that she had sent out 250 letters to members about our Easter party. A committee of Brothers Jerry Kucera, Al Soukup, Aubrey Uptmor, George Straten and Sister Peggy Dobecka were named for selecting those for the Lifetime Achiever Award.

SPJST Purchases Trailer for West Scouts West Boy Scout Troop 494 recently received a $3,100 donation from three West-area SPJST lodges to purchase an equipment trailer for its camping trips, jamborees and other outdoor activities. Lodge 6, Cottonwood; Lodge 54, West and Lodge 66, Waco joined in the effort. "The Scouts have served the needs of the West community by fostering moral and character development in its youth, promoting patriotism and flag etiquette, showing honor to their country, teaching good citizenship and by being involved in community service," said District Three Director Johnnie Krizan, upon making the presentation. Sister Hattie Kaska, Sunshine Committee chairman, was on vacation with her sister, Mary Neckar, to Las Vegas.

Youth Club Report

Our Youth Leader, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report of cakes delivered to the rest home on February 6 and March 6. She also reported their Valentine party on February 15 with all enjoying themselves. They will meet on March 15 and complete their Easter projects for the rest home residents. She reported no social for April 5 due to State Camp at Green Family Camp in Bruceville-Eddy.

She reported the camp would be from April 5 - 7 and the fee is $85 per child.

She would need a deposit by March 25 deadline for those who would be going. She also mentioned that this camp is not just for SPJST members

and that it is for anyone 5 to 17 years who would like to attend.

Sister Peggy also mentioned that the youth would be participating in a Christmas Card Design Contest. Of the entries, approximately four cards would be selected to sell at Christmas time. She encouraged all the youth to participate in this contest. Sister Peggy ended her report by mentioning that there would be a short Easter program by the youth club, along with an Easter egg hunt afterwards for everyone through adults.

Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, mentioned the 100th Centennial of our building on September 6, but celebration on September 8. Any suggestions are welcome regarding this project.

He also mentioned that the Christmas Ornament sale that the Chamber of Commerce of West does each year will have our building on its ornament this year. This is its tenth year to do this and the ornaments are $7.50 each.

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, March 20, 2002 Sister Irene Schiemenz mentioned that she has some of the ornaments in her shop, Tex-Czech Crafts and Quilting, if anyone wanted to come by to see what they look like. Some of the ornaments still on hand are The Depot, The Gazebo, City Hall, WestFest, St.Mary's Assumption Church, Czech Folk Dancers and more. Really, a nice variety of collectable ornaments depicting the West area and its heritage.

Brother Johnnie Krizan called upon the Charitable Committee Chairman, Brother Bobbie Dobecka, for his report. He reported making charitable contributions for 2001 to West Ambulance, West Volunteer Fire Department, West League Booster Club, West Sokol, SPJST Scholarship Fund, West Girl Scouts and several area volunteer fire departments. He also recommended that for the year 2002 that $1100 be allocated for various nonprofit organizations which was approved by the lodge. He also mentioned that anyone who knows of a nonprofit organization that they would like to see receive monies to please let him know.

Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, and Sister Barbara Hykel, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, will present the 50-year member pins to those present. Only one pin was presented and it went to Brother Robert Kahanak, from Lodge 157, Penelope. Since that is not an active lodge, we invited him to please come to our lodge and accept. He has been a member in Penelope since he was 18 years of age. We were happy to have him and his family with us and invite them to come and be with us at any time. The other members who were not present to receive their 50-year pins were Brothers Charles Kutscherousky, Emerick J. Pavlas, Jr. and Edward Joseph Lenart. Congratulations to these folks!

New Business Under new business, the Discover West brochure was brought up as it is returning again this year. It was voted that Lodge 6, Cottonwood, place an ad in the brochure. Other business was the upcoming picnic on the third Sunday in July. Any ideas on activities are welcomed.

6, Cottonwood, Incorporated reports on business meeting Lodge

Hi! Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, called the meeting of Lodge No. 6, Inc. to order on Sunday, March 10, 2002. All officers were present.

Sister Barbara Hykel, Secretary, read the minutes from their last meeting, which were approved as read.

Treasurer, Brother George Straten, gave his report. It was approved as given. Brother George reported $705 in donations for the year 2001.

Brother Bobbie Dobecka, Chairman of the Charitable Contribution Committee, read two thank you notes from nonprofit organizations that received funds from Lodge No. 6, Inc. The notes were from CareNet Pregnancy Center and the Family Abuse Center in Waco, Texas. Brother Bobbie mentioned that for 2002 he was asking that $1000 be allocated for Lodge No. 6, Inc., which was approved. He also mentioned that they try and serve nonprofit organizations in the McLennan and Hill County areas and if anyone has someone in mind to please let him know.

A Cooperative Effort Brother Johnnie Krizan spoke about the trailer that the West Boys Scouts were given from donations through Lodge 6, Cottonwood, Lodge 66, Waco in Elm Mott and Lodge 54, West along with the Supreme Lodge in Temple, Texas. The project of $3100 for this trailer was finalized and a picture was in The West News.

Brother Johnnie also mentioned that the trailer would have the SPJST logo and all of the donors' names on the outside of the trailer.

Thanks to Brother Jerry Kucera for handling the election of officers for the year 2002 for Lodge No. 6, Inc. The officers were elected by acclamation as follows: President—Brother Johnnie Krizan; Vice President— Brother Robert Dobecka; Secretary— Sister Barbara Hykel; and Treasurer/Purchasing Agent—Brother George Straten.

Congratulations to these officers!

8, Weimar reports on February meeting

We had one birthday honoree for February—Rosie Shumbera and one wedding anniversary—Raymond and Christie Kocian.

Door prizes were drawn before the adjournment of the meeting. A chicken gumbo soup, sandwiches, desserts and drinks were served before the meeting.

SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar met for the regular meeting, Monday, February 25 at the Veteran's Hall. The meeting was called to order by the President Leo Jares and everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for our deceased members. District Six Field Representative Karen Kaspar was our special guest.

The minutes and treasurer's report were read and approved.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Erline Janik reported on the Officer Workshop held in Hallettsville on February 7. Three of our officers attended.

Rosie Shumbera was presented a certificate for the Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 8 by Karen Kaspar. At the Workshop and Incentive Award Banquet held in Holland, February 23, Lodge 8 received the Bronze Award and a check for $1570. Leo Jares was also presented a plaque for the District Six Top Producer "Earned Premium".

Attending were Gene and Henrietta Veselka and Leo and JoAnn Jares.

We will have three members receiving their 50-year pins this year.

Plans will be made for presentation of the pins to each member. A memorial service is planned for our deceased members at the May meeting. The families will be notified and extended an invitation to the meeting.

Two new members, Barbara Farek and Mickale C. Bledsoe, were accepted into our lodge.

A sympathy card was signed by all present and sent to Rosie Shumbera for the loss of her brother. A get well card was also sent to Daryl Entrop.

Congratulations to Lodge 8, Weimar members Raymond and Christie Kocian, who were observing their 42nd wedding anniversary at the February lodge meeting.

15, Buckholts conversational Czech class organizational meeting March 26 Lodge

I am very pleased to announce that Lodge 15 will sponsor a course in conversational Czech. I will, once again, be the instructor and, we will hold an organizational meeting on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall in Buckholts. The goal is to have 20 students so please come and bring a friend. I am hoping that our Taylor friends, not only join us once again, but, come in increased numbers. If you can't come the first time—no matter. Come when you can. You will still get your money's worth.

The past year, I had been approached by people who had not attended previous sessions, but said they would like to come this time. So I'm holding them to do good on their promises.

18, Elgin reports on March meeting Lodge

President Mike Mogonye opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for all our members. President Mike Mogonye welcomed Supreme President Howard Leshikar to our meeting.

Secretary Diane Cannon read the minutes form the last meeting. Glen Matetzschk gave the treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Ruby Bowen reported that the youth made Valentines for the nursing home and delivered them.

The residents were thrilled to get the valentines, but probably very happy to see the youngsters. I remember when we would visit the nursing home all the residents were thrilled to see the grandchildren, especially the little ones. The younger the child, the more thrilled the elderly. It was always very uplifting to see the residents happy— so little that meant so much. Ruby will be attending the banquet and a youth leadership workshop. Thank

40, El Campo-Hillje reports on March meeting Lodge

All you parents and grandparents get your little ones active in the SPJST. We have so much to offer them, and they are our future.

Gladys Mogonye gave the ticket report. Irene Helgren had no report from the entertainment committee and Artie Munson is still trying to book bands for the rest of the year. Charles Wilson gave the bar report. He stated that we need a clean-up day at the hall. It's been a while since we did a thorough cleaning. Agnes Rupp was appointed financial treasurer. You can pay your SPJST dues to her. President Mogonye will be appointing other committees as needed.

Everyone needs to keep track of his or her volunteer hours. Remember this is how we keep our tax exempt status. Anything you do for your church, community other societies, as well as the SPJST counts. Turn in your hours to James Buckner. You can do this monthly or quarterly, this way you can keep better track. If you are like me, you forget—old age or something.

Supreme_Lodge President Howard Leshikar talked about the new year and goals for SPJST. Our lodge will get an award at the banquet. He thanked everyone for all their interest and involvement in the lodge. It takes all to make a society work. He thanked Lodge 18 for meeting its goal. He is looking forward to seeing many of us at the banquet.

Mike Mogonye again thanked the past officers and board members for all their work last year. They helped the representatives make their goals.

El Campo-Hillje SPJST Lodge 40 met March 3, 2002 at the lodge hall in Hillje. President Debbie Sczech called the meeting to order at 12 p.m.

She welcomed 62 members and 10 guests. Vice President Sheldon Holub led the members and guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for departed members. Roll call was cited. All officers were present and trustees were present with Trustee Kenneth Cerny being absent.

The minutes stand approved as read.

Secretary Tria Svatek read correspondence. Sheldon Holub gave the bingo report. Dorothy Mader gave the Fraternal Activities Coordinator report. She announced a clean-up day on April 14, 2002 prior to the start of regular meeting. Everyone is requested to be at the lodge hall at noon. A stew lunch will be served.

The meeting time is set for 2 p.m.

Youth Leader Ardis Bacak gave the youth club report. District Six Field Representative Karen Kaspar gave a brief report on the awards banquet.

Sales Reports for February: James Bacak sold 10 policies and Sheldon Holub sold three policies. Lorraine Kana gave the treasurer's report.

Leona Macha displayed the Christmas ornaments that Hospice offers each year as a fund raiser and public awareness program. Lodge 40 has received an ornament each year since the program began for their contributions.

There was no old business.

New Business Leona Macha asked the membership to consider a donation to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum when the information packet is received this calendar year. Sheldon Holub made a motion to accept the bid for the floor in the restrooms and kitchen. Seconded by Ardis Bacak.

Motion carried. Edith Molberg made a motion to replace kitchen and men's sinks, urinal, damaged cornmodes, stalls, and install a baby changing station, and paint restrooms and kitchen. Seconded by Ben Svoboda. Motion carried.

March birthday celebrant is Mary Ann Cerny. Janet Marek won the door prize.

President Sczech adjourned the meeting at 12:40 p.m. After the meeting, members and guests enjoyed a meal of ribeye steak, baked potato, corn, salad, homemade rolls and a variety of desserts.

District Six Director Mike Alhstrom congratulated Lodge 40 for reaching the Platinum Award level.

63, Sweet Home meeting and spring social March 17 Lodge

Dear Readers, Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on March 17, 2002 at the Queen of Peace Parish Hall in Sweet Home beginning at 12 noon. A social hour will be followed by a meal of vegetable beef stew made by our lodge gentlemen cookers. Members are asked to bring a dessert as all other items will be furnished by the lodge. A birthday cake, baked by Vlasta Jurica, will be won by someone with a birthday in January, February or March.

A short business meeting will be held immediately following the meal.

Door prizes will be drawn after the adjournment of the meeting.

It has been our custom to have an Easter egg hunt at our spring social.

This will be the case again this year, weather permitting, with a hunt for young and old alike. It's not certain if the Easter bunny will be green or Irish, but surely he'll leave something green.

reports on lodge member activities Our lodge lost two active members: Evelyn Mikolas and Henry Kite. Evelyn was active for many years—in the Birthday Club and the lodge and was willing to help at all times, being very active especially with the Birthday Club activities. Henry Kite was active in various activities being always glad to give help where it was needed.

Both of these members will be missed because their help was so often, and cheerfully given. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to all their survivors, and we will be remembering them and their kind help.

District Five Spring Meeting The District Five Spring Meeting was at Lodge 196, Houston-West on Sunday, March 3. It was a beautiful day, the dinner was great and everyone seemed to be enjoying it all!

Bingo was played under the capable direction of Clara and Johnny Broz and Evelyn Mikeska. There were prizes galore! You missed it when you didn't come!

Lodge 139, Danbury reports on March meeting The March 6 meeting of Lodge 139 was held at E.J.'s Restaurant. Business reports were given.

Lorenda Baldwin gave a report on the awards banquet which was held at Holland, Lodge 80. Danbury Lodge 139 was well represented at the banquet with David and Lorenda Baldwin, Lonnie and Eloise Lostak, Tommie Lostak, and Wayne Garner attending. Lorenda announced the lodge received the Silver Award by meeting the criteria set for this award. The lodge was presented with a lovely plaque for attaining this goal.

Several members commented on the District Five Spring Meeting at Houston-West Lodge 196 on March 3.

All Lodge 139 members who attended agreed it was a good meeting and was enjoyed by all in spite of the very cold weather.

At the meeting, our lodge vice president, Monte Baldwin, was elected president of District Five for the next term. Tommie Lostak was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the meeting. This award is in recognition of Tommie's long devotion and service to his lodge. Congratulations to both Monte and Tommie.

This month is Baldwin birthday month as three Baldwins celebrate birthdays in March—David, and Monte and Jalene Baldwin were wished many more happy birthdays.

After the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of "My Country 'Tis of Thee", a moment of silence was observed in memory of Monsignor George Harris.

His funeral mass had been attended by many of our members as was the rosary.

Upon entering Sokol before our meeting, the first thing I saw were the colorful Easter decorations on all of the tables. Once again, Dorothy McCoy turned our plain meeting room into a holiday setting. Thank you, Dorothy. We appreciate your thoughtfulness.

We received a beautiful Czech Easter postcard from Jerry Elzner. It featured the traditional lamb-shaped cake. I hadn't seen one in years. Winnie Kucera used to bake and decorate one for special occasions at Sokol years ago. We also received a thank you card from Della Elzner for the flowers Jerry Elzner delivered to her in the hospital when she suffered a broken pelvis January 21. She has made a remarkable recovery and attended our meeting not even needing a walker.

The Czech Heritage Festival was a success again this year. Some of our members helped bake the hundreds of kolace sold and others attended the event to enjoy the entertainment and good food. The Caller Times had a nice write-up and two pictures taken of dancing couples at the festival.

Lodge 79's Fraternalist of the Year Jerry Sijansky's picture appeared in the Vestnik along with the honorees of other lodges. He has become one of our regular guests since wife, Jill joined a few months ago. By chance, I discovered that Jerry has brought one of his delicious cakes to every meeting he has attended. I advise Jill we take turns as hostesses, but she said, "Jerry likes to bake and wants to do it."

Doing for others is second nature for Jerry Sijansky.

Edna Voldan and her group, Love 'N Stitches, made and delivered 72 lap rugs to Sunnybrook Rest Home last month. Edna started this project alone some time ago and was soon joined by others. The lap rugs are much appreciated by nursing home residents.

Donations to the Krouzek in memory of Monsignor George Harris were made by the following: Norma Baker, Helen and Clem Kasparek, Jerry and Milly Elzner, Marion Peterek, Anna Marie Moss, Margaret Kolodziej, Donna Havranek, Lil Hruska, Della Elzner, Evelyn Lovelace, Lera Nemecek, Frances Kosarek, Dorothy McCoy, Frances McDonald, Becky Elzner, Ella Simcik, Albertina Oakes and Patsy Dziadek.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Patsy Dziadek, Helen Kasparek, Marion Peterek and Dolores Pollok.

After a brief discussion about the hungry in the Coastal Bend, we voted to bring canned goods and staples to our next meeting to be donated to Metro Ministries. Jerry Elzner volunteered to make the delivery. So please remember to bring your donations to the April 4 meeting.

25, Ennis Youth Club learns about Czech Easter traditions at party Lodge

Dear Readers, We had an Easter Party on Sunday March 10. We had a guest speaker who talked about Czech Easter traditions. Did you know that boys used to go from house to house ringing bells and people gave them money?

She told us that only the girls colored the eggs and what the different colors mean and something about a stick that I can't remember what it is called, but the boys whip the girls to bring the badness out of them.

After that, we colored real eggs.

Then we played a word search game and did a maze. Then we hunted for our eggs. Some of the plastic eggs had real money in them. After the hunt we told "funny-bunny" jokes.

Everyone who told a joke got a prize.

Then there was a big basket door prize that Jake Holland won.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Leader reports on recent club activities The El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club held its monthly meeting on Sunday, February 10, 2002 at 1:15 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Cory Cerny. Cory led the youth in saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

Old business was discussed. After the meeting, the youth made and decorated Valentines with construction paper. Some of the Valentines were made to take to the nursing home.

They youth also water-colored very large Valentines with very bright colors. Some of them added yarn to their brightly colored hearts.

After the meeting, the youth enjoyed refreshments brought by some of the youth members.

March Meeting Report The El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club held a short monthly meeting at the lodge hall on Sunday, March 3, 2002 at 11 a.m.

President Cory Cerny called the meeting to order. He led the youth in saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

The youth leader discussed the District Six Spring Meeting that was going to be held at the Hungerford hall in Hungerford, Texas on Sunday, March 10, 2002.

She had asked the youth to bring grocery items to the district meeting to be used for the raffle sponsored by the youth of Lodge 40. The youth leader also asked the youth to come and help with the raffle.

After the meeting, the youth designed Christmas cards for the SPJST Christmas Card Design Contest. The cards will be judged at the District Six Spring Meeting in Hungerford on March 10.

The youth did a great job on designing their Christmas cards. I am proud of each and everyone of you.

Thanks! The youth welcomed Christopher Blahuta, a guest at our meeting.
