IRAs: A Sound Option With April 15 fast approaching, a lot of us, I know, are thinking about taxes and looking for ways to secure our families' financial well being. In planning for your future, something you may want to consider is an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or a Roth IRA from SPJST. Traditional IRAs have a lot going for them. For starters, they're easy to set up and offer immediate tax benefits, with contributions and/or earnings tax-deferred until retirement. Likewise, they offer accessibility. Funds are always available - something not generally true of employer plans.

Finally, there's the flexibility; there's no minimum amount that you have to contribute each year.

Accessing Your Roth IRA If you satisfy two conditions, you may make tax-free and penalty-free withdrawals from your Roth IRA. First, the plan must have been open for a minimum of five years. Second, the withdrawal must be made after the one of the following events: • Age 59 1/2; • Death; • Disability; or • First home purchase.

Distributions which meet the above requirements are referred to as "qualifying distributions." While you may take distributions from your Roth IRA at any time, distributions which are not qualifying distributions will be subject to taxes (and in some cases early distribution penalties) to the extent they exceed your aggregate contributions to Roth IRAs).

Unlike the traditional IRA, there are no required minimum distributions at age 70 1/2. Your earnings can continue to grow until you need them. There are special requirements when these plans pass to your beneficiaries.

Traditional IRAs

The requirements for contributing to a traditional IRA are few. You can contribute: • if you are under age 70 1/2; • if you have earned income from employment; and • up to a maximum of $2,000 ($4000 combined for spouses) per year.

As previously stated, one of the immediate benefits of contributing to a traditional IRA is a tax deduction on your income taxes. IRA contributors receive a 100 percent deduction on their annual contribution if: • they do not receive benefits under an employer's retirement plan, or (if they do) • earn no more than $40,000 if married and filing jointly, $25,000 if filing singly. These amounts are projected to increase in the years ahead.

Roth IRAs

The Roth IRA is an attractive option - especially for younger members seeking to secure their financial future - in that it allows participants to invest their after-tax dollars today, let the investment grow tax-deferred, and withdraw the principle and earnings tax-free after five years. Please note, however, that you may be subjected to a 10 percent penalty on the earnings if taken before age 59 1/2.

Who Is Eligible?

Unlike the traditional IRA, there is no 70 1/2 age limit on making contributions. You simply need to have earned income equal to the amount that you contribute - up to a maximum of $2,000 ($4,000 combined for spouses) per year.

Spring Meeting Season Is Here Lodge 172, Pasadena hosts the District Five Spring Meeting this Sunday, March 5. All District Five members are encouraged to attend. The lunch and social begins at noon, with the meeting getting under way at 2 p.m.

Re: By-Law Recommendation Dear Members of the By-Law Committee: During the January Supreme Lodge meeting, it was decided to propose to the By-Law Committee to the changing of the name from Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas SPJST to "SPJST." The reasons for this recommendation are: 1. Most people refer to the Society as SPJST or SP and very few realize the legal name is Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas SPJST. 2. As the initials SPJST are from the original name Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas SPJST, by changing the name; the Society would be preserving its heritage.

I certify the foregoing recommendations were approved by the Supreme Lodge SPJST by majority vote to be submitted to the SPJST By-Law Committee.

Truly, the sales representatives (volunteer force) are the backbone of the organization who have to step out of their day-to-day lives and present our state-of-the-art products in a professional manner to potential clients in order to enhance/maintain SPJST's growth.

The sales representative should not only attend the required number of Lodge meetings as well as produce a minimal amount of insurance/members in between conventions as set by the Supreme Lodge Vice President and State Field Manager.

It should also be the prerogative of a qualified sales representative whether or not to attend the convention. If a lodge needs more delegates than there are sales representatives who are qualified, then qualified members should be voted upon from the floor.

NEW SECTION -- ADD TO PREFACE, BEFORE "SUPREME LODGE" (PAGE 3) GROWTH AND SCOPE OF BUSINESS The SPJST will actively seek opportunities for prudent growth and development in ways that will increase benefits to the SPJST's members, consistent with the mission of the SPJST. NEW SECTION -ADD TO PREFACE, BEFORE "SUPREME LODGE" (PAGE 3) BUSINESS PLAN One of the SPJST's greatest strengths is that it is an established organization known for its financial stability and emphasis on family-oriented programming. On an annual basis, the Supreme Lodge Officers working with the Directors and other key groups will conduct a strategic planning process and develop an Annual Business Plan with clearly defined qualitative and quantitative goals for review and approval by the Supreme Lodge at its October meeting. This annual document will be communicated throughout the Society and provide management with a better understanding of member needs and expectations, identify strengths and weaknesses in operations, help anticipate changes in the marketplace and position the Society to pursue new opportunities for the benefit of members. The President, in cooperation with the Vice President and other department heads, will establish and maintain a data base for tracking strategic plan initiatives.

EXPLANATION: What we can expect to achieve with a clearly defined and implemented business plan: 1. Maintain or improve the SPJST's asset quality and service to current members.

2. Implement marketing strategies that will result in net increases in membership in an actuarially sound manner. This will be accomplished by increasing our visibility and market share in our traditional markets and by being proactive in identifying new opportunities for local lodges.

3. It will be a goal to achieve the A.M. Best Company's top rating (A++) Superior and/or Standard and Poor's AAA top rating and to manage the SPJST's capital structure by increasing and improving return on investment and enhancing the SPJST's image in the financial community and insurance industry.

RECOMMENDATION TO THE BY-LAWS Submitted by Brian Vanicek, Member Lodge 24, Cyclone OFFICERS, SUPREME LODGE ARTICLE 37. President ADDITIONS: The President's Office will work closely with the Vice President's Office and other key areas to develop marketing strategies aimed at developing new business. The President and Vice President are expected to produce results and present a quarterly account to the Supreme Lodge and membership for their stewardship.

The President and Vice President shall be given the necessary latitude to exercise independent judgment in executing policies of the Supreme Lodge. The Supreme Lodge acknowledges that obligation and gives the President and Vice President that latitude of judgement and discretion, and expects faithful performance in carrying out all of the policies.

The President's Office will work to ensure that communication programs are in place and working that facilitate the exchange of information, both upward and downward, throughout the SPJST. The President's Office will manage the SPJST's governmental affairs and legislative relationships, utilizing whatever in-house and/or organizational expertise is available, to ensure that the SPJST's interests are protected and advanced.

The President's Office will coordinate and produce member events and communications that will help to raise an awareness of and build confidence in the SPJST and its management.

4NESTNIK—Wednesday, March 1, 2000 The President's Office, in cooperation with the Supreme Lodge, will provide on a quarterly basis and through the Vestnik, information to the members that outlines organizational performance and promotes a better understanding of matters affecting business and relating to effective local lodge management.

EXPLANATION: It is recognized that effective leadership, accountability and communication are important factors in the success of the SPJST. RECOMMENDATION TO THE BY-LAWS Submitted by Brian Vanicek, Member Lodge 24, Cyclone Pending the ratification by Delegates of the Supreme Lodge recommendation to establish a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, tax-deductible foundation for the Library, Archives and Museum, the following recommendation is respectfully submitted: That the Delegates to the 28th SPJST Convention begin the Millennium Capital Campaign to supplement the long-term growth and development of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum.

EXPLANATION: Every SPJST member and friend of the Society can have a personal part in helping to make our Library, Archive and Museum something generation after generation can be proud of. Now, through the Millennium Capital Campaign, individuals and families can pledge varying levels of taxdeductible support to the project.

While plans for LAM growth and development will necessarily rest in the hands of LAM directors, individual members, corporate and foundation support will help to make the project an even greater success.

The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum has got great potential and the capacity to be a real rallying point for a dynamic fraternal program in the 21st Century. Nonprofit groups are flourishing and growing at a pace never seen before in the United States, says a recent IRS publication, Statistics of Income Bulletin.

Charities, foundations and other nonprofit organizations "represent an important and growing force in the economy and this will continue over the next decade."

District Two Spring Meeting March 19 at Lodge 18, Elgin It's that time again — time again for the District Two Spring Meeting. This year the meeting will be held at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin on Sunday, March 19.

Registration starts at 1 p.m. and the business meeting begins at 2 p.m. The members of Lodge 18, Elgin will have sweets for sale before the meeting and the district will provide soft drinks, coffee and tea.

As always, we will recognize SPJST members who have attained the "Grand Age of 96," as well as 75- and 50- year members and lodge fraternalists of the year. We will also elect district officers and decide the location of the fall meeting.

Just to clarify things: The SPJST does not presently operate under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. As a fraternal benefit society, we are considered a 501 (c) (8) organization. Without question, that is a real plus: It provides our tax-exempt status. On the other hand, our capacity to accept tax-deductible donations and grants is limited to our Scholarship Program. Lodge 6, Cottonwood Lodge 24,Cyclone hosts SPJST State extends invitation Tarok Tournament to Texas Spring Gala Hi! On Saturday, February 19, 2000, Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood held the SPJST State Tarok Tournament.

Approximately 44 guests participated. I understand that some drove four hours to come and play. Thanks to Sister Barbara Rosenkranz, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, for being the tournament director for the day.

Thanks to everyone that came out and enjoyed the day. There were several rave reviews on lunch that was served. Glad that all of you enjoyed a day of fellowship with everyone from other parts of the state. All total, there were approximately 60 in attendance.

Thanks to all lodge members that came out and helped with all the food fixings and activities of setting up for the tournament. Also thanks to Brother Johnnie Krizan for hosting a free class for some wanting to learn.

As I had to leave early, I do not have all details, but am sure there will be more on this in the Vestnik in coming weeks. Again, thanks to all that came, whether working or playing.

Dear Members, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its third monthly meeting of 2000, the 12th of March, at 2 p.m., in the 106 Leveridge Street meeting room. The agenda will follow the standard order of business and business needing immediate attention will be taken care of.

A fraternal hour buffet luncheon with its regular fare will follow the business meeting.

February Meeting Report On Sunday, the 13th of February, the meeting convened with a quorum present. One item of business was handled and some other items were tabled for later consideration.

University of Texas Interior Design Program boosted by first professorship in memory of Gene Edward Mikeska The University of Texas's Interior Design program has reached a developmental milestone with the establishment of its first faculty endowment.

The Gene Edward Mikeska Endowed Professorship for Interior Design was funded by Miss Marie Hall of Big Spring in memory of her longtime friend and interior designer, a 1964 UT graduate who died in 1996.

Brother Mikeska, who was a member of Lodge 47, Seaton, is the son of Emily Mikeska Stuteville of Rogers, Texas and the late Edward J. Mikeska of Rogers — all members of Lodge 47, Seaton.

ArchiteCture Dean Lawrence W. Speck says the revamped program will see immediate benefits from hall's gift. "When we adopted Interior Design we got a beautiful newborn baby, but we had inadequate diapers and formula," he says.

"There were very few endowments for support and none designated for faculty. The Mikeska endowment is critical for helpin g us grow this program into one of the very best in the country."

40, El CampoHilije reports on February meeting Lodge

On February 13, 2000, El CampoHilije SPJST Lodge 40 gathered with a welcome by President Sheldon Holub.

The meeting was called to order by President Holub at 4 p.m. with 37 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for all the sick in the community and deceased members.

Secretary Tria Molberg read the January minutes. Ruby Kunz gave the treasurer's report. Michelle Kunz, Youth Leader, reported that the Youth Club made Valentine cards for the residents of the Czech Catholic Home.

President Holub reported that the State Office received and reviewed Lodge 40's By-laws. The By-laws were found to be in order and were accepted. The list and pins of fiftyyear members are in and will be awarded in September. Lodge 40 has 24 members to receive 50-year pins.

Bingo Going Strong Monday night bingo is still doing great and is averaging 150 people per game night. The floors of the lodge hall were stripped and waxed and looks like new.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi plans 'no bake---bake sale' At our February meeting, we discussed a variety of subjects. Some of the subjects were the big loss of members in our lodge; hosting the district spring meeting; having a fund raiser with the net proceeds divided equally with Sokol Corpus Christi; SPJST Scholarship Fund and Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center. We decided to have a "No Bake—Bake Sale." So, members of Lodge 79, be watching for a letter about this great event. Thanks to Pat Parma of Lodge 175 for this idea.

Our awards dinner will be in April; more details after our April meeting.

A letter from Make a Difference Day was read stating our entry was received and thanking us for participating.

A number of Lodge 79 members will be helping Sokol gymnasts at their pancake breakfast on March 12. They will be serving from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also discussed was the upcoming workshop in Ennis and our convention.

We want to say thanks to our District Director Bob Bayer for coming to meet with us and enlightening us on a variety of subjects. Thanks also for the door prizes.

We want to congratulate Helen Hegwood for being chosen as State Fraternalist of the Year. Also, all the lodge fraternalists are to be congratulated.

A donation was made to TCHCC and also our monthly donation went to the Red Cross.

Helen Pavelka, our efficient secretary, was honored by the Moravian Club recently for her many years as the D.J. for the popular radio show"Polka Party" and promoting Czech music and events.

I also want to congratulate Daria Tresohlova who is from Strani, Czech Republic studying at Schreiner College in Kerrville for being inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta. To be inducted, one must have at least a 3.5 G.P.A. Daria is my cousin Liba Popelkova's granddaughter. Her tuition is being paid for by Agnes Burge a Lodge 79 member. ,A big thank you is due our Lodge 79 members, Lillie Huber, who sent us a box of very interesting writings and papers of her late father, John Stasa.

Many members have already enjoyed reading some of the papers. Thanks, Sister Lillie.

92, Fort Worth February meeting report Lodge

Our last lodge meeting was held on Sunday, February 13, 2000. One of the highlights of the meeting was the presentation of a 75-year membership pin to Joe Paprskar. Joe has served our lodge as president in the late 60s and early 70s. Joe is a very supportive member of Lodge 92. Joe and Nancy make the effort to attend all of our meetings even though they have a long drive from Dallas. We look forward to your attendance at many more meetings in good health!

Educators are selected for this award by being designated as "the teacher who made a difference" by a former student who has also been recognized for academic excellence.

We have just learned of the death of a longtime member, Stanley Tatarevich.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

177, Academy notes total donations Lodge

Our meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Bill Hutka with all officers present except the lodge secretary/reporter -- me. I want to thank Joanne Hutka for taking the minutes of the meeting in my absence.

She did a fantastic job! Thanks again, Joanne.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, Libbie Bartek, Sunshine Chair, gave her report. Sympathy cards were sent to Mrs. Rosemary Hunter, the family of Mary Dawson, Mrs. Raymond Kovar and family, Mrs. Wynn Jane Dusek and Otis and Jackie Beck. Get well cards were sent to Kathryn Fritz and Jackie Beck. A floral spray was sent to the funeral of Raymond Kovar and a potted plant to Jackie and Otis Beck.

Libbie had a busy month! We also learned that Mary Ann Summers' brother had passed away. Mary Ann, our sympathy is with you and your family.

Under correspondence, we received cards from the Stout family, the family of Raymond Kovar and Jackie Beck.

We also received information on the upcoming State Workshop and Incentive Banquet on February 26 in Ennis, Texas. The lodge received an appreciation certificate from the Bell County CrossTown Network for its recent donation. We were pleased to received Premium Refund and Bronze Award from the Supreme Lodge.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved with one correction.

All committee chairpersons presented their monthly reports.

Lodge trustees met at 7 p.m. on February 9 with all trustees present except Kathy Friz and Clifford Cawthon. Trustees are working to get new front doors and possibly replace tables since most are pretty well worn.

The trustees also talked about remodeling the kitchen. A motion was made

by Otis Beck and seconded by Louis Driska to turn down request for the lodge to host District Two Youth Achievement Day on June 26. The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

The Youth Club will meet Sunday, February 12 at 2 p.m.

We were proud to report that last year $7,542.60 was donated by our lodge to charities and worthy organizations within the community.

We also thanked Evelyn Younts, our guest, for attending the lodge meeting.

Evelyn, please come back again.

The Audit Committee presented their report and it was adopted.

Our lodge will present a scholarship this fall to a worthy SPJST Lodge 177 member. President Hutka will get recommendations for scholarship procedures from the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

Thanks went to Linda Johnson for providing sandwiches and Valentine cupcakes for everyone to enjoy before the meeting.

Irene Johnson completed another scrapbook for the lodge. Great job, Irene! It takes a lot of time and work to compile our pictures and articles of the lodge and Irene did it again! Irene told members that she'd like suggestions.

Our sweetheart dance was just that—a sweetheart of a dance, a

smashing success. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed dancing to the tunes of the Just Us band. As always, they did a superb job. Thank you everyone for your hard work in making this dance such a success. Lodge 180 could not have done it without your help.

Field Representative, to come and present the installation of officers in February. I hope he will be able to come.

We also voted to have finger foods for our February meeting. We then voted to go to several educational museums like the SPJST, the train museum, etc.

The youth and youth leaders discussed some activities that the SPJST Home Office has planned. Then they discussed some alternatives that they could participate in and some other activities to make or go to and enjoy.

I have enjoyed being an officer in SPJST for a number of years and with great honor and enthusiasm. I will not hold an officer position in our lodge because our young members are getting involved. I, the older member, am here to help and encourage them to achieve their young and aggressive goals, so that our lodge will grow and succeed.

Hats Off to SPJST

I would also like to say a word about our Home Office. Everyone is so special and understanding. If there is a problem, you can go and visit them personally about it and not talk to someone in a northern state who has no idea what is going on and does not even know you. To them, you are just a number. SPJST shows great concern about our youth and the youth feel they understand them.

Our children look forward to all SPJST events, camps and lodge meetings year after year and when they get too old to go to the events, they almost get upset. They also make the adults feel very special with the spring and fall meetings. Above all, the food is always great.

Lodge 186, Caldwell reports on February meeting The regular meeting was held on February 8, 2000. The meeting was called to order by President Luksa.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Secretary Haisler. Roll call of officers was taken—all were present. The minutes were read and approved.

President Clint Luksa and Lydia Supak are delegates to the convention.

Lodge 189, BryanCollege Station quarterly meeting March 12 The next quarterly meeting for Bryan-College Station will be held at 2 p.m., March 12, 2000 at First Federal Savings Bank, 2900 Texas Avenue, Bryan, Texas.

We urge all members to make an extra effort to attend this meeting. This will be the last meeting before the convention, so we would like input from the membership on anything you may feel should be brought forth at the convention. Charles Munday is our elected delegate representing Lodge 189 at the convention. Brother Munday will be discussing convention matters at the meeting. Lodge 196 is pleased to announce that they will be having a St. Patrick's Day Dance on March 18.

Performing for your listening and dancing enjoyment will be Butch Perkins and his band, Train 45. Butch and Train 45 are from Spring, Texas and play country-western and variety music that everyone can dance to.

Admission is $6 per person. The dance will be from 8 p.m. until 12 a.m.

Make plans to attend and bring a few friends along to enjoy the fun.

The Lodge 196 Youth Club will be selling nachos and popcorn to raise money for their projects.

December News At the December meeting, the 50year members were honored. Twentyone members and four visitors were in attendance. Twenty-nine members were 50-year members in 1999. Of these, seven members were in attendance, namely Beatrice Andreas, Kermit Kolwes, Pearl Macat, Betty Jo Strauss, Peggy Louise Ueckert, Celia Zettel, Earnest A. Siptak, Jr. After recognizing the members present, a delicious lunch of sandwiches, chips, dips and drinks along with a special decorated cake was served.

Before the meeting to honor the 50year members, we had a very short business meeting. All present stood in silent prayer for deceased fraternal brother and sisters, Mr. Edgar Eben, Mrs. Annie Schovajsa and Irene Mikeska.

January Meeting Report The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 201 was held Sunday, January 9, 2000.

The meeting was called to order by President Mrs. Danny Duron at 3 p.m.

All officers were in attendance.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Mrs. Lillie Mae Shupak and approved.

Memorials for the 13 deceased members were given to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Rental Guidelines New guidelines, in regards to renting the hall, were made and approved.

Circle of Czech Women report on February meeting Dallas

Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Faye Wright led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence for three of our dear Sisters, Rose Kopecek, Marie Kowal and Virginia Blatney; two friends, Andy Poteska, Ervin Rusnak of WFLA and RVOS and Otto Janousek, brother in-law of Mary Janousek and Carlyn Ondrusek.

Bertha welcomed 25 members and

10 men guests. It was good to have some of the members who have not been able to come.

Correspondence read by Evelyn Trojacek included a letter from Georgia and Jerry Stransky and a donation in memory of Rose Kopecek.

Thank you from the family of Sid Pokladnik for the donation; Martha and Stanley Vrla for the donation in memory of their son, Steven; a thank you from the Order of Alhambra for the donation in memory of Steven Vrla; a thank you from the Masaryk University for the donation and support of the Faculty Exchange Program of SW Medical School; a thank you from the Texas Culture Center from La Grange for our donation; a letter to Evelyn Cechan from Annie Marie Moss and a donation in memory of Rose Kopecek.

Frank Mikula, President of Brno Sister City of Czech Republic gave a brief report of their visit to Brno, Czech Republic. They took literature and gifts from Texas and he said it was a success. He also thanked us for the donation.

Sunshine Chairwoman was busy sending cards to the shut-ins and the sick and injured members. She sent sympathy cards to Mary Janousek, Carlyn Ondrusek, Pat Potiska and Eleanor Rusnak. She sent get well cards to Evelyn Salac and Wanda Petr.

She also sent thinking-of-you cards to Ella Mae Faraizl, Bessie Kalick, Anne Zvolanek, Josephine Kankrlik, Marie Lattner, Lydia Kartous and Mary Sebestik.

Announcements The Czech Culture Society report was given by Joyce Ehrenberger.

Election of officers and a spaghetti dinner is at the next meeting, February 28 at Sokol at 7 p.m. The Fraternal Council is February 14 at 7:30 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 84.

Esther Cunningham Chairperson of the 65th anniversary celebration gave a brief report of the celebration. It will be April 9, 2000 at Sokol from 2 to 5 p.m. She and her committee of Faye Wright and Eileen Jakubowski will have a report in March.

We were going to vote on the officers, but Helen Oates our parliamentarian said our by-laws state that we would vote on the nominating committee in February and select the officers in March. We voted to have the nominating committee include Faye Wright, Bessie Petr and Esther Cunningham to remain. , Joyce Ehrenberger gave a report of our trip to Granbury. This was tabled until March or after the 65th anniversary celebration.

It was discussed about raising the dues to $7. A motion was made to leave the dues at $5. Anyone who wants to donate to a special occasion may do so.

We had a report of all the sick sisters including Evelyn Salac, Wanda Petr, Helen Parma, Annie Staglik, Florence Peressenyni, Anne Zvolanek, Mary Sebestik. Hope they are feeling

better and on the road to recovery.

Lillian Hamusek brought a kroj of Ellie Frednick. She wanted o donate it to the Krouzek. Esther Cunningham would like to display this in our new display case. Thanks to Ellie, we will do so.

Sewing Circle reports on February meeting Ennis

The Circle met February 10, 2000.

We had a good attendance. Our guests were Jerry Zmolek, Julius Podhrasky and Charles Kosarek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was repeated. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Milton Laznovsky, brother of Sister Vlasta Laznovsky; in memory of Leslie Kosarek, brother in-law of Sister Lillie Kosarek. We express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved families.

Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read.

Sunshine chairperson Eleanora Pelzel gave the following report that a get well card and money gift was sent to Sister Lillie Kosarek. Sisters Eleanora Pelzel, Lucy Honza, Emily Harrison and Dorothy Prachyl wrapped and delivered Christmas gifts to 13 sisters who cannot attend our meetings.

Letters Section State Youth Director posts details of March 10 Youth Leaders Workshop Dear SPJST Youth Leaders, The poet Edna St. Vincent Millay once wrote: "Childhood is the kingdom where nobody dies." In the same spirit, there is a little kingdom near Killeen, Texas, embraced by the crooked arms of the Lampasas River and nestled in the bosom of the Hill Country. It is a place where children celebrate living.

All youth leaders, assistant youth leaders, and their guests are invited to experience this exciting place — Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children—site of the 2000 SPJST Youth Leaders Workshop, on Friday, March 10 to Sunday, March 12.

Peaceable Kingdom Retreat occupies about 125 acres on the Lampasas River in Central Texas' scenic Hill Country. The retreat is located approximately 15 miles west of Interstate 35 in the small village of Youngsport, between Salado and Killeen.

The workshop will be a fun and learning experience for all youth leaders, assistant youth leaders and spouses/guests. I encourage you to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to acquire new ideas for your youth club. Themed "The Next Millennium and Beyond," this year's workshop begins with early registration at 7 p.m.

Friday in the Headquarters Building.

Parking is near the Headquarters Building and swimming pool or by the theater. Friday evening will include meeting new friends and greeting old friends, snacks and games.

Youth Leader Day

Saturday is "SPJST Youth Leader Day." A flag ceremony begins the day at 7:45 a.m. followed by breakfast and registration. The workshop begins at 9 a.m. The day will be filled with youth program and camp updates, dance instruction and art fun. 20002001 youth club rule book updates will also be discussed. All youth leaders will be recognized at a dinner theatre banquet which begins at 6:30 p.m.

The workshop concludes on Sunday following breakfast and camp/youth club planning.

If you cannot get away for the entire weekend, please attend on Saturday. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday morning in the Headquarters Building.

We are helping our community this month by selling raffle tickets for the Brethren Church fundraiser. Also this month we are collecting books for the Half-Pint Library sponsored by HalfPrice Books in B/CS and collecting Box Tops For Education. We also had a great time at the Donkey Basketball game on February 16th.

The Luck of the Irish . . . and of You!

(Second in a Series of Four) A Three-Part Program On an annual basis, SPJST Youth Clubs sponsor a wide range of social activities, community service projects and charity projects. The SPJST youth club is about having fun but it's also about contributing to the welfare of the people of Texas.

The SPJST Youth Program has three parts: educational, patriotic and social. The educational part of the SPJST Youth Program is an ongoing part of local youth club activities.

State and local programs address a range of areas, including human rela-

tions, nature, parliamentary procedure, juvenile decency, arts and crafts, the fine arts, music, dramatics and ethnic tradition. Youth club members range from age six to high school senior.

The patriotic program consists of ceremonial rituals and an annual Flag Day essay contest. The objective is to teach the operation of a free democratic society and majority rule.

The social program includes parties, dances, picnics, pageants, hayrides and family group activities geared to foster family unity.

Brian is a superb photographer My Dog Story I read this article in the Dallas Morning News: Dewayne, a four year-old boy was reported missing on a Wednesday about 4:30 p.m. About 100 volunteers searched unsuccessfully into the night. A helicopter pilot who spotted the boy from the air; guided the rescuers who reached the child at 11:30 a.m., Thursday. The night was very cold and rainy. The temperature dropped into the upper 30s.

Dewayne was a four year-old boy wearing only a plastic jacket, huddling with two dogs to keep him warm along the Mississippi River. The

dogs' names were Roxie and a neighbor's dog, Smokie. Dewayne said he had wandered off too far and couldn't find his way home. The County Rescue Squad leader said that the dogs didn't even bark and said, "I guess thought they were protecting him." The rescuers said that they have never seen a four year-old that tough. He was carried out on horseback to a standing ovation. Dewayne was checked for exposure and released. Roxie and Smokie truly were heroes who possibly saved Dewayne's life.

National Czech and Slovak Museum invites entries for egg exhibition This Easter season, the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library is featuring an exhibition of eggs decorated in the Czech, Moravian and Slovak styles.

Any folk artist (decorator) who has been a resident of the United States for the past five years may be eligible to submit his/her work for exhibition.
