Summer Marathon makes a difference The SPJST's Summer Marathon '95 Arlington; and Landis Kopecky of Lodge Membership Drive concluded on 40, El Campo-Hillje.

New Year's Resolutions Thinking About Tomorrow What better time than the beginning of the new year to apply a fresh outlook on life.

This past week, I had a chance to visit with each of our Supreme Lodge officers, discuss and record some of their resolutions for 1996. They are as follows: President Howard Leshikar: "New Year's resolutions? I'd have to respond to that in a couple of ways. With regards to SPJST, I want to see all of us making a more conscious effort to focus our energies on bringing strength to the body of our system, namely our local lodges. With the SPJST Convention less than six months away, its time to evaluate and modernize our policies and procedures. To the many persons involved in the fraternal areas across the state - you brought out the strength of the Society.

"Another thing, as it relates to our Society, we must continue to work in 1995 to ensure the financial security of our membership. One of the greatest services that we can provide to our members is insurance. Brother Mikeska, in his role as vice president, has been doing a good job in this area. Both Modterm and Senior Life coverage were great initiatives.

These programs are aimed at specific groups of members and have been doing exceptionally well. As a group, I hope we can work together to develop more of the same.

"Personally speaking, I resolve to adopt a healthier lifestyle. There's no secret to that, really. A better diet, more physical activity.

Finally, Mary and I want to wish the best of the holidays and health and happiness to each and every person."

"In the area of investments, I don't know if it's really a resolution; however, I will continue to do whatever I can to ensure that SPJST gets the best yields possible on its investments.

"In my home and family life, I resolve to try and be less of a procrastinator. I have a way around the house, when certain chores need to be done, of always finding 'something else' that needs to be done first. I'll do better at that in '96."

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas: "It's an ongoing resolution: To continue to devote 100 percent of my work-related efforts to the betterment of the SPJST. That relates to all things, whether its monitoring finances or servicing our members accounts, I resolve to see that our service remain `A-1' "Personally speaking, I resolve to keep up my exercise program and keep eating right.

Those two thingsexercise and diet-are very important to me and I'm going to try and stick with them."

Vice President Leonard Mikeska: "On a personal level, I resolve to continue my lifelong pursuit of putting the important things in life in their proper perspective.

Those are God, family and work ... Also, I resolve to encourage more, criticize less, and utilize the power of positive thought.

"On a professional level, I resolve to structure my actions on the reality that first and foremost, the SPJST must meet the needs of its members. We must constantly work at improving our services to our members and provide our sales representatives the level of training that will enable them to excel in the delivery of our products ... and we must search out and continue to make available the fraternal services that positively change peoples liyes, insurance products that make dreams come true and bring peace of mind."

Secretary Treasurer Lanita Anglin: "New Year's resolutions? Let me answer that in two ways. First, as it applies to my work with the SPJST, I want to stress customer service in 1996. You generate business and get return business when you are responsive to your customers needs. In our case, our customers are our members.

When someone calls or drops by, I want my department to be able to give that individual a prompt and satisfactory response to what-

The Society will remain only as strong as our members make it. One of the most effective ways members can help is by communicating with your elected delegates for what is good for your Fraternal Benefit Society. We are not just "an insurance organization" . . . we are a Fraternal Benefit Society with special privileges and responsibilities under State and Federal law. That's especially important now - in the months preceding our 1996 convention. Something else ... our delegates need to appreciate just how important their role is in this democratic process and their responsibility to our Society. As delegates, they are truly in a position to effect positive change in our SPJST and at the same time benefit our Fraternal Benefit Society. Our delegates can effect the changes that will ensure that our By-Laws positively represent the views of the members.

"We are one of the few major groups in existence that have the opportunity every four years to make a critical evaluation of our society and decide just where we want to go. Our delegates can also vote for and decide who their leaders will be and their leaders will respond to them.

I want to see the SPJST take advantage of that opportunity not only in 1996, but for generations to come."

Thanks to our Supreme Lodge officers for sharing their resolutions with us in the Vestnik. May all of us, as active members, truly take advantage of our opportunities in 1996, mobilize our resources and set the stage for a dynamic fraternal society for the 21st century.

From the Secretary-Treasurer's Office Hotel Information for the Twenty-Seventh SPJST Convention The officers have made arrangements with some of the hotels in the Arlington area for rooms for those attending the SPJST XXVII Convention.

These rooms will only be held until May 1, 1996. Anyone who needs a room should call and make reservations as soon as possible. A credit card number or a check in the amount of one night's lodging will ensure that your room will be held for late arrival.

Lodge 20, Granger Holds Christmas Party and Annual Meeting The members of SPJST Lodge 20, Granger held their Christmas party and annual meeting on Sunday, December 3 at the lodge hall.

The meeting was called to order by President Leslie Loessin. The tarok tournament was held at the lodge hall on December 12. It was a great turn out and everyone had a good time. We want to thank all those who helped work.

Our lodge had our annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive.

We enjoyed having Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife Mary attend our meeting and party.

Dear Readers, This is the first letter that I have written to the Vestnik in more than 30 years. I haven't written since I was Youth Leader for Lodge 39 in the 1960s. Some of the youngsters who were in my club are now grandparents.

My husband Bennie and I go to meetings as often as we can. The folks at the lodge are really working hard to keep the lodge going. I want to say thanks to them all and keep up the good work.

Last Sunday, our lodge had their Christmas party. First, we had a lunch. It was great. Thanks to Dottie Everett, Binnie Roesler, and Darlene Henderson.

There were a lot of youngsters there and Binnie Roesler did a good job providing things for them to do. They made ornaments for the tree and chairs.

Then, we had drawings for prizes and every person got a gift. We had a short meeting and then the ones who wanted to, played cards and dominoes.

I wish to take this opportunity to say thank you to Sister Elenor Kuder for all her years of service and may God bless her.

Lodge 20, Granger Presents 1996 Officers

Youth Leaders Emily Tischler and Deborah Spanel President Howard Leshikar installed the officers.

The meeting was followed by a delicious supper of fried chicken, sausage and all the trimmings. President Howard Leshikar gave the blessing before the meal.

The youth club entertained the members With Christmas carols and they also gave away many door prizes.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Member Major Alvin Vavra Completes Cadet Command Training Program Army Maj. Alvin E. Vavra, a member of Lodge 17, New Tabor, has completed the Army's college and university level School of Cadet Command or SOCC, which is part of the Senior ROTC program at Fort Monroe, Virginia.

The SOCC's mission is to train soldiers who will serve as future leaders in the United States Army, and functions as an integral part of the Cadet Command. All soldiers destined for an ROTC assignment, from brigadier generals to sergeants, and from administrative to supply occupational specialities, attend the School of Cadet command.

The students either go to their ROTC assignment or return to their college or university campuses after completing the eight-day course, experiencing first hand the fast-paced training environment of this important command.

Vavra, an assistant professor of military science, is the son of District One Director Andrew J. and Lola D. Vavra of Caldwell.

He is a 1971 graduate of Stephen F. Austin, Bryan, and a 1980 graduate of Texas A&M University, College Station. The major received a master's degree in 1992 from Webster University in St. Louis.

Alvin's wife Sally is from Bryan.

Her parents are Dottie Holmes of Bryan and Bob Holmes of College Station.

Alvin and Sally have two sons, Robert Andrew and Michael Ryan.

They all live in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Alvin is in charge of ROTC at the University of North Carolina. All are members of Lodge 17, New Tabor.

47, Seaton to Host Tarok Tournament on Saturday, January 6 Lodge

The mid-winter Tarok Tournament will be held at Lodge 47, Seaton on Saturday, January 6 with play beginning at 9 a.m. The public is invited and SPJST membership is not required. Six onehour rounds will be played by everyone.

Prizes will be awarded.

The cost is $15 per player which includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes. Ruth Hanusch is the lodge fraternal activities coordinator and the tarok chairman. Please pre-register with Ruth so that we can estimate our food supply.

47, Seaton Reports on December Meeting Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The December 3 lodge meeting was convened by President Calvin Skrabanek at 2 p.m. Flag Bearers Crystal Bartek and Janet Baca brought in the flags and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for Sister Chloe Stephens. May she rest in eternal peace and sympathy to her family. Visitors welcomed were Otis Meier, Elvern Frenzel and Bennie Mueller.

Please make plans to be present for the upcoming meetings in 1996. Roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives was read by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek. Woodrow Marek, board chairman, was absent with all officers present. The minutes of the November 5 meeting were approved as read.

On the sick list were Sister Pat Pechal, Brothers Lewis Sirney and Leon Jezek, Sr. Brother Jezek is now recuperating at home but the others are still patients.

Hope the doctors have a "miracle" cure for those seriously ill. Little Jerry David Pechal was in the hospital, also, but is now at home.

Lodge 47, Seaton Member Ruth Keith Inducted into Sports Hall of Fame Ms. Ruth Shenkir Keith, a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton, and an administrative secretary for the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department, has been inducted into the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation's Hall of Fame.

In 1971, Ruth organized Arlington's first women's slow-pitch softball team, which was the Arlington Angels. The Angels won 12 city TAAF titles, nine regional TAAF championships and placed fourth in the national tournament in Toledo, Ohio.

Ruth is a 1957 graduate of Rogers High. School and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Shenkir of Temple.

She has one son, Rick Keith of North Richland Hills. She is the sister of Norma Tucker of Rogers, Ann Thompson of Arlington and Shirley Patterson of Temple.

Lisa Dodd transferred from Buckholts Lodge 15 to Lodge 47. Welcome to all named and do come to the meetings and other activities. Correspondence included congratulations to the youth club team that placed second in the recent volleyball tournament from Brother Howard Leshikar and a report from Brother Willie Kohutek about the interest rates being lowered on the mortgages of members' loans on buildings.

The board minutes were read by Edwin Vasicek, secretary. The officers' reports followed. President thanked Henry Janacek for installing the new locks. The decorating and preparations for the Christmas Party were discussed.

Vice President Edwin Pechal reminded everyone of the fund raiser on March 2 and also stated that items for the silent auction would be appreciated.

Second Vice President Ruth Hanusch stated that the statewide winter tarok tournament is to be held at Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, January 6. The ladies are being asked to bring desserts for the noon meal for this event.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek thanked Judy Pechal and Wilma Motl, the seamstresses of the curtains, for their help with the curtain project. Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch gave her monthly report. Other reports were all given by the chairpersons in charge.

We voted to contribute to the membership drive of KNCT Public Television because some of the Home Office crew were being solicitors on television on Tuesday, December 5. We also contributed to the 100 Pennies Drive at the Home Office also.

The youth leader gave her report: 25 members, one visitor and one new member were present at the meeting. She also reported that their Christmas Party with the catered meal and gift exchange was set for Friday, December 8.

The meeting moved right along with the election of the chairpersons for 1996.

Hope your day was "special" and many, many more to come.

The next meeting is Sunday, January 7, 1996, at 2 p.m. with the installation of officers. We are asking for salads and sweets for the supper after the meeting.

You always come through with the delicious food you bring, as you did for the Christmas party. It was a cold day on December 10 and the youth club members again brought the meals to those who were unable to come. There were 26 deliveries made. Thanks to the youth for this gesture. The memorial service was real impressive, as always. The skits and Santa Claus and his helpers were great. The Brother and Sister Award for 1995 was presented to Brother Walter and Ella Pomykal.

Congratulations! The meal was delicious and so was the fellowship that followed. If you missed this party, plan on being there next year.

Remember the lodge meeting is Sunday, January 7 at 2 p.m. with the installation of officers and the meal for which you bring a salad or sweet. Start the new year of 1996 with regular attendance for the lodge meetings and other activities, dances, etc.

Season's Greetings! Time for the lastminute shopping and preparation for the holidays. Most festivities are behind us and our thoughts are centered around Christmas Day. May we enjoy and cherish our time with our families and friends as we celebrate our Lord's birthday.

92, Fort Worth Reports on Lodge Activities

Dear Members and Friends, Again we are coming to an end of another year. Also, we can say it has been a good year and hope the new year will be better yet. I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy new year. Most everyone is now busy baking cookies and preparing for family get-togethers and Christmas dinner. So let's hope you will take time to read the Vestnik during this rush at the close of the year.

Lodge 92 had a very nice, program for our Christmas party on December 10.

Ladies brought tasty cookies and Martha Durham with Christine Zich and Evelyn Spacek made some good punch—one with lime sherbet and ginger ale and the other was Hawaiian punch.

Gordon Hubenak opened the program with greetings from Lodge 92. The youth leaders, Cheryl Hubenak and Sherri Watkins, put on a nice program with the young children singing Christmas songs.

At the finish, they had the Nativity Scene which was very nice with the new costumes that were made for this. The children started singing, "Here Comes Santa Claus." So guess who entered the front door—old Santa himself. He gave out presents to all the young children which did not take long as in previous years because Santa had some elves to help give out the adult gifts. This really did save time and it did not keep the young children waiting so long.

Wednesday, December 27, 1995—VESTNIK/7 After Santa gave out the gifts, bags of fruit, candy and nuts were given out to all who were present. The lodge does this each year. Early Sunday morning before the program, several members came to prepare the bags. Mary Ann Krivanek with Kenneth's help fixed breakfast that consisted of pancakes and sausage.

Thanks to all who came.

This is the first time in several years that I had to miss but due to this broken leg, it is difficult to get around. Thanks to the children that were in the program.

Also thanks to the ladies that brought cookies. I want to thank our editor for printing my letters and the pictures and to all who have enjoyed the letters and jokes. I hope I have brought a smile or two. It has been fun writing the letters as this way all SPJST lodges can know what the other lodges are doing.

So, as in the beginning, I wish all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and hope all of us stay healthy.

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 10, 1995, President Keith Kieschnick called our annual meeting to order.

We had 47 members and three guests present. All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. The minutes from the last meeting were accepted as read.

All officers' reports were read.

The youth club report was read by Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis. The youth gave a donation for door prizes.

The lucky winners of the beautiful poinsettia was Anita Charbula. The youth thanks all for their donations for the raffle. Thanks go out to Frank and Dorothy Tumis, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Braunagel, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Schmidt, Lorraine Motl, Henry and Rita Hermis, Sidon and Rosie Tumis, the Burl family, the Dennis Hermis family, and the Bob Schleider family.

Visitors recognized were Joe Braunagel, Ernie Stryk, and Bernice Jatzlau.

The sick committee reports Brother Rudy Cernuch ill and our member Ruth Kieschnick fell on Sunday morning and spent some time in the emergency room.

177, Academy Reports on December Meeting

Dear Members, The December meeting was called to order by President Otis Beck on December 13, 1995. All members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of three deceased members, Vernie May, Thomas Harrison and William C. (Bill) Johnson, Sr. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to these three families.

The plaque was presented to President Beck at the social at Big Stone Steak House in Bartlett.

He then congratulated Libbie Bartek as being the Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 177 and stated she is very deserving of this recognition for all the fraternal activities she has done and that her name should appear in the "Hall of Fame." Financial Secretary Mikulas recognized three Home Office employees that were present. He informed the members that Kathy Fritz is assistant to Vice President Leonard Mikeska and has been employed for 16 years. He stated that Linda Johnson was his assistant and has been employed for 19 years. Pat Patton is the receptionist for the Home Office and works for Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin. Pat has been employed for one year. He complimented these employees for a job well done.

Kathy Fritz read thank-you cards from the Vernie May family and the Thomas Harrison family. She also read a Christmas card from District Two Director Willie Kohutek and his wife Adeline.

All chairperson reports were given.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Joanne Smith recognized December birthday celebrants. They were Bill Hutka, Clifford Cawthorn, J.C. Johnson, Irene Johnson and

Gary Bartek. Joanne welcomed Pat Patton, Ann Mason and Shirley McCrea who were recent new members. She stated that their membership has helped Lodge 177 achieve the Gold Star Award. Door prizes were won by J.C. Johnson, Christy Fritz, and Joanne Smith. Joanne reminded the members about the social to be held Friday, December 15 beginninu at 6:30 p.m. at the Big Stone Steak House in Bartlett.

Secretary Kathy Fritz read the new members written for the month. They were Anneliese Stewart, Brandi Bartlett, Brandon Posvar, Jeremy Posvar. and Shirley McCrea. These members were accepted into our membership and we welcome you to our monthly meetings.

Motion was made and carried to donate $578 to the Harvest House in Temple to help with the Meals on Wheels.

The members brought canned goods which were donated to St. Vincent DePaul.

Josie Tomastik, chairman of the volleyball team, reported that Lodge 177 won third place in the spiking division of the volleyball tournament. They also won $50. She recognized the members who played. The $50 was presented to the youth club.

President Otis Beck thanked the members for working with him and asked that all members work with the new president, Louis Driska. Vice President Bill Hutka thanked Otis Beck for a job well done.

Bill Hutka prepared a delicious homemade stew that was enjoyed by all. Otis thanked Bill for preparing it. Otis and Jackie volunteered to bring food for the January meeting to be held Wednesday, January 10, 1996. The social will start at 6:30 p.m. Start the new year by joining us at Lodge 177.

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas then installed the officers for 1996.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Lodge 177, Academy Members Enjoy December Social On Friday, December 15, about 50 regular attending members met at 6:30 p.m. at Big Stone Steak House in Bartlett.

The building was beautifully decorated for Christmas and everyone was dressed in holiday colors and they were in a festive mood; Special guests were District Two Director Willie Kohutek and wife Adeline, SPJST Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and wife Betty, and SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin member Belva Alexander who brought her mother-inlaw Irene Johnson.

All members and their families enjoyed socializing prior to a delicious meal.

Joanne Smith, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, presented President Otis Beck with a plaque for outstanding duties performed while president of Lodge 177.

Thanks to Willie Kohutek for furnishing the door prizes.

Our lodge has a loving and supportive membership.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women Reports on December Meeting Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. We had a moment of silence in remembrance of our dear departed sisters, Marie Fitz and Mildred Voss (sister of Georgia Long); Jerry Rotrekl (brother of Rose Kopecek); and Buel Matthews (sister-in-law of Lydia Alholm).

Correspondence read by Evelyn Trojacek included a letter from Ella Nachtigal and a donation in memory of her mother, Mary Nesuda. A letter was read from the doctors who have been studying here from Brno. They thanked everyone for their hospitality. A letter from Rose Kopecek was received thank-

ing everyone for the cards and telephone calls and for being there in the time of her loss of her brother, Jerry Rotrekl.

Marie Lattner of the Sunshine Committee, sent Christmas cards to the shut-ins. Get-well cards were sent to Marie Fitz, Millie Noska, and Mildred Cervenka. Sympathy cards were sent to Tommy Rotrekl, Georgia Long, Rose Kopecek.

Libbie Elsik of the Sunshine Committee sent sympathy cards to Martha and Stanley Patak and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fitz. Get-well cards were sent to Lydia Tyrock and Vicki Kohn.

It was good to see everyone at the Christmas party. We welcome a new member, Emma Mae Provazek.

The School of Independent Learning at the University of Texas currently offers two courses in the Czech language.

Czech 506 and 507 are designed to help beginners develop proficiency in understanding, reading, writing and speaking Czech. By using the texts, study guide, and cassette tapes, students are able to learn Czech in their own home. Upon completion of each course, the student earns five hours of college credit. Both courses are redesigned by Dr. Kevin Hannan of the University of Texas, Austin and they include information on the contemporary colloquial language and on Moravian pronunciation.

LESLIE GUSTAFSON. Leslie Gustafson, age 73, of Elgin died Wednesday, December 6, 1995.

He was born to Joel and Martha Gustafson on November 24, 1922, near Type, Texas. He married Evelyn Prinz Gustafson on September 18, 1943.

Leslie was a life-long member of Brethren Lutheran Church in Lund, Texas, and served as councilmember and on numerous committees. He enjoyed farming and was a retired postal employee. He was also active in the SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin where he served as president and in numerous other offices. He loved his wife, farming, fishing, hunting and dominoes.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; one brother, Wilbert and his wife, Mary Ann; one sister-in-law, Helen Ray, all of Elgin; his nieces, Joyce Wanda Kay and Karen; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ervin.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, December 8 at Bethleham Lutheran Church. Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery after which family and friends were invited to the SPJST for light refreshments and fellowship.

Memorials may be made to Bethleham Lutheran Church, SPJST Scholarship Fund or to Hospice Round Rock.

Arrangements were by Elgin Funeral Home.

to the Czech Republic Travel

Travel to the Czech Republic and study Czech with people from all over the United States. The study tour will be from July 2 to July 26, 1996. Group leaders will be Thadious Polasek of Texas and Helena Briard of Prague, Czech Republic.

Housing and food service will be at the dorms of the Agriculture School at Suchdol in the northern part of Praha.

Instruction will be by professors of the Charles University and a linguistic institute in Praha. Along with the classes, there will be cultural excursions in Prague: tours of the Prague Castle, pic-

JOE PRIEVE, age 70 of College Station, who passed away on Thursday, November 16, 1995.

Mr. Prieve was a member of the Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents Otto Prieve, Sr. and Mary Lehde Prieve, two brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Prieve was born in Burleson County and had lived there most of his life. He was employed in the physical department at Texas A&M University.

He is survived by his wife, Hattie Marie Prieve of College Station; two sons, Oliver Wayne Prieve of Sugarland and Ray Wayne Prieve of Gonzales; two sisters, Ruby Vavra and Irene Schumacher, both of Caldwell; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Sunday, November 19, 1995, at Southwood Funeral Home Chapel in College Station with the Revs. Jill Knuepell and Craig Storlie officiating.

Burial was in the Elizabeth Lutheran Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of all the officers and members of Jaromir Lodge 54, West, the Resolution Committee wishes to express our condolences to the bereaved relatives and friends of our departed lodge sister, TEREZIE MAREK, age 100, of West, who passed away early Sunday evening, November 12, 1995, at West Rest Haven in West.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m.

Tuesday, November 14 at the West Brethren Church with the Rev. Robert Holaday officiating. Burial followed at West Brethren Cemetery.

Mrs. Marek was born May 31, 1895, in Bratrejove (Moravia), Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Thomas and Frances Kovar. She was the youngest of six children and came to the United States in July, 1914, at the age of 19. She settled in Granger and later moved to Axtell. She married John J. Marek on November 22, 1915, in West. She was a housewife and a homemaker. They lived on and worked a farm in the Tokio community before moving to West in 1957. Her husband died after 59 years of marriage on August 2, 1975.

She was a member of the West Brethren Church where she was active in and a charter member of the Christian Sisters and formerly served as a secretary.

She was also a member of the Mutual Aide Society and the SPJST Lodge 54 in West. Sister Marek outlived her SPJST certificate in 1991 and was honored by Lodge 54 members.

She is survived by one nephew, John E. Kasik, Sr. of Malone; two nieces, Elsie Stunkard of Maypearl and Lillian Urbanovsky of West; and several greatnieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Memorials may be made to the West Brethren Church or to the Christian Sisters.

Brother Mewhinney was born in Temple to Gene B. and Cornelia Young Mewhinney, Sr. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was president of the First National Bank of Holland, having been associated with the bank for the last 41 years. He was a rancher in the area for many years.

Mr. Orsag was educated in Burleson County Schools and had been employed

by Burleson County for 53 years as a maintainer operator. He married Elsie Skrabanek on March 15, 1939, in Caldwell. He was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church and his family remembers how he loved to fish and hunt. He also enjoyed farming and ranching.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two sons-in-law, and one grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Skrabanek Orsag of Caldwell; two daughters and a son-in-law, Betty and

Robert Mishler of Houston and Shirley Koudelka of Caldwell; one brother and sister-in-law; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 26, 1995, from New Tabor Brethren Church near Caldwell with Reverend M.E. Stutts officiating.

Throughout the duration of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive, the Vestnik will be providing updates on past scholarship recipients and what they are now doing. Collectively, they are all members of what we refer to as the "SP League," or "Scholarship Program League."

Shannon Camille Blankenship received an SPJST Scholarship in 1990 and her bachelor's degree in Animal Science from Texas Tech University in 1993. She is a third year veterinary student enrolled in the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. Shannon has also served as her class president since 1993. In addition to her participation in several professional and academic societies, Shannon is the recipient of the 1995-1996 Herbert and Gertrude Schmidt Endowed Scholarship in the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine.

Byron Palla received an SPJST Scholarship in 1990 and graduated in 1995 from the University of Texas with a bachelor of science degree in Chemical Engineering. From the State Youth Leader SPJST State King and Queen Participate in Temple Christmas Parade Every year, the Temple Christmas Parade presents a lighted parade to entertain and delight children of all ages, and this year was no exception. Our SPJST State King C.J. Novak of Lodge 84, Dallas, State Queen Brandi Dum of Lodge 97, Placedo, State Duke Rusty Sims of Lodge 84, Dallas, and State Duchess Kristine Dum of Lodge 97, Placedo greeted spectators in a beautiful horse-drawn carriage, courtesy of Milo Johnson Carriage Service. Youth Letters Section District Seven Youth Counselor Reports on Performance at State Royalty and YAD At the 1995 State Royalty held August 5 at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone, District Seven was represented by the Royalty Court consisting of King Stacey Branham, Queen Andrea Mills, and Duchess Sarah Jaroszewski, all from Lodge 185, New Braunfels. They were all very poised and gave excellent speeches and interviews. They were great examples of what the SPJST Youth Program can do.
