February 1995 SPJST Top Producers Congratulations to our Top Producers for this month. We are happy to report that our Top State Producers, based on February production, are Frank Pajestka, Jr. of Lodge 80, Holland; for number of applications, Ben Pyle of Lodge 156, Baytown; and for earned premium, Fred Buri of Lodge 88, Houston.

February was an exciting month for SPJST in sales. Our sales representatives wrote more than $7 million in insurance and 111 applications. 1995 is going to be another banner year in sales with the efforts of our field force and sales representatives. We are proud of our Top Producers who really went that extra mile during February and made it a super month for sales.

This is also the first month we are presenting members of our Consistency Club (see back page). We have six individuals who wrote a minimum of two insurance applications for two consecutive months.

We hope to see more producers on this list next month. Congratulations to this group of producers.

Commitment Builds Character Depth of Character Membership in the SPJST begins with the simple purchase of a life insurance certificate. Next comes imagination and initiative. As a fraternal organization, we can provide a wide range of services which attend to the needs of our communities and fellow members. It is this commitment on the local scale that gives our organization its depth of character and separates us from being a purely corporate, profit-making entity.

The SPJST has many active and dedicated members who readily accept the responsibility of caring for our fellow human beings. A lot of these good people were in attendance last Saturday at the Annual Lodge Officers' Workshop held at Lodge 177, Academy. Even more came out for the 1994 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet held at Lodge 80, Holland.

Summaries and photographs of both the workshop and incentive banquet will be presented in the Vestnik next week and the following week. ***

Czech Folklore Lecture The Vestnik received notice this past week of a public lecture on Czech folklore that will be presented on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The Texas Chair in Czech Studies, College of Liberal Arts and The Department of Slavic Languages is presenting a lecture

by Jindrich Toman, visiting professor, Texas Chair in Czech Studies, from the University of Michigan on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at Calhoun Hall 422.

The topic of the lecture is "Echoes of Folklore in Czech Literature."

Jindrich Toman was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He has a MA degree in Germanic and Slavic Philology from the Universitat Freiburg in Germany and a doctor of philosophy degree in Germanic and Slavic Philology from the Universitat Holn in Germany.

Dr. Toman has been the Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan since 1990. He currently teaches Fundamentals of Slavic Linguistics, Research Methods in Slavic Linguistics, Comparative Slavic Linguistics, Modern Czech Literature, Pre-1780 Czech Literature, Russian Formalism and Czech Structuralism, and Arts and Cultures of Central Europe.

Dr. Toman's awards and fellowships include Vice President for Research at the University of Michigan, grant to organize a workshop on "Functional Projections in Slavic Syntax," A reception will follow Dr. Toman's lecture in the Old Music Building 3.102.

Texas Polka Music Awards If you're in a "travelling mood," this weekend, please note that the Civic Center in El Campo, Texas, will be the site of the Fifth Annual Texas Polka Music Association (TPMA) Festival and Awards. This major event, which honors the polka musicians of Texas, will be held March 18 and 19, 1995. Eleven groups will be featured over this two-day weekend.

The festival opens with performers starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday and continuing until 12 midnight. On Sunday, March 19, the day begins with a Polka Mass at 10 a.m. celebrated with Father George Balasko. The Polka Music Awards, a Grammy-like ceremony honoring the dedicated polka musicians of Texas, will be held at 12 noon. Music for dancing will commence from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Featured on the grounds over this twoday weekend will be a room for continuous jam sessions where prizes will be awarded, a museum-type room displaying early recordings and instruments from the early days of Texas polka, plus arts and crafts booths, various food booths, and more items of interest.

The Texas Polka Music Association has secured the talents of B.J. Sablatura of East Bernard, Texas, to assist in the production of this year's event.

According to Julius Tupa, executive director of TPMA, "This year's event is shaping up to be the finest awards festival to date."

ACC Czech Class Readers in and around Austin interested in improving their Czech language skills, please take notice: Conversational Czech II Course No. CSC 3-763040 is being offered at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, beginning March 21, 1995, to May 4, 1995. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 p.m.. to 9 p.m. at the Reagan Campus Room 433.

Conversational Czech II is designed for the student who already has some basic knowledge of this language and wants to improve his/her reading and speaking skills. Emphasis will be on nouns and adjectives formed from various verb aspects.

Registration begins February 1, 1995, at Austin Community College Administrative Office at Highland Mall.

District Five FAC Visits Area Lodges District Five Fraternal Activities Coordinator Fred Buri had the distinct pleasure of visiting a few lodges in District Five.

Lodge 196, Houston West had a wellattended meeting with plans in the works for their own home lodge. Youth Club members were busy making plans for their future activities with Youth Leader Jill Stasney. Fred had the honor of visiting Lodge 81 in Needville. He received a warm welcome from the members who served a delicious covered dish lunch.

He also visited Lodge 172, Pasadena, which was a pleasure to visit and meet such a fine group. They are very hard workers and are always busy promoting their lodge.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Reports on February Meeting Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje met at 7 p.m. on February 15, 1995.

President Rita Vanek led the Pledge to the flag with 13 members present. A moment of silent prayer followed for our ill and deceased members. The minutes were read by Secretary Ardis Bacak. The minutes of the February 15, 1995, meeting were read and approved.

Special guest attending our February meeting was Brother Jim Wiest, State Field Representative. He brought greetings from the Home Office. He congratulated the sales representatives, officers and members of Lodge 40 for winning the Silver Award at the 1994 SPJST Local Lodge Incentive Program. Brother Wiest also brought some very nice door prizes from the Home Office.

President Rita Vanek talked about the Texas Chair in Czech Studies. She also talked about the District meeting in Sweet Home.

The meeting was adjourned by President Rita Vanek. Door prizes were won by Frankie Vanek, Ardis Bacak, and

63, Sweet Home to Meet March 19 Lodge

Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on March 19, 1995, in Sweet Home at the Sweet Home Community Center beginning at 12 noon.

We will begin with a hospitality hour, followed by a hot dog luncheon. The lodge will furnish the hot dogs and side dishes. Members are asked to bring desserts.

The meeting will follow the lunch.

One of the topics to be discussed will be the upcoming district meeting, which our Lodge 63, Sweet Home will host.

Someone lucky with a birthday in January, February or March will win a birthday cake baked by Annie Zabransky.

Door prizes will also be drawn. Anyone wishing to donate door prizes may do so.

Since this will be our Easter social, there will be an Easter egg hunt for young and old. Put on your sneakers and see if you can race everyone to the hidden eggs.

Games will also be played throughout the afternoon.

Come on out. Get something to eat, something to drink, something to find, something to play, and something to know!

81, Needville Reports on Special Meeting

Sunday, February 19, 1995, was a very important day. It was the time when our neighbors down Highway 36 became part of our family. This was the...merging of Lodge 112, Guy with Lodge 81, Needville.

At 12 noon, we all enjoyed a pot luck meal. Everything was delicious. We have so many talented cooks. When the ladies got into their kitchen this time, they really outdid themselves. There was a great variety of meats, vegetables, salads,

President Macha called the 1 p.m. business meeting to order. Gilbert Walzel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The meeting was then designated to a Special Meeting at which time Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar presided. He explained to us that the merging of Lodge 112, Guy and Lodge 81, Needville was done according to the by-laws and everything is in order.

A vote for the merger was taken from both lodges. Both lodges were in favor of the merger. No one present opposed the merging of the lodges.

Mr. Leshikar then adjourned the special meeting.

President Macha preceded on with the regular meeting. The roll call showed that all officers were present.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes from the January meeting. They were accepted as read. Secretary Werner also read the correspondence.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall presented the monthly financial report, which was accepted as read. It was so good to see Sister Willie Mae. Just recently, she had two surgeries. Our prayer is that God will give her the strength she needs to get well and that she will soon be on the road to a complete recovery.

Gilbert Walzel, our Special Fund chairman, gave his report of expenses, income, and balances. The report was accepted as read. The books were audited by Shirley Bosse, and Gilbert read her report. The books are in order. Gilbert then reported on the events scheduled for our lodge hall for March.

Agnes Stalmach will be the recipient of the 75-year pin. Our Age 96 honorees are Vlasta S. Chernosky and Agnes Stalmach.

President Macha reported that Charles Altimore will be able to fix our barbecue pit for a very reasonable price. He is to start work on it as soon as possible.

Thanks to Brother Edward Kuban for donating the material we needed to get started on this project. It is deeply appreciated.

The correspondence which the President received during the past month was read. Among the correspondence were letters from Evelyn Mikeska about the District Five Spring Meeting at Lodge 172 in Pasadena on March 5, 1995.

Then, word came about the local lodge officers workshop at Lodge 177, Academy and also the Incentive Awards Banquet at Lodge 80, Holland. These events will be held on March 11, 1995. It was learned that Edwin Susan was the winning insurance recipient from Lodge 81. Congratulations, Edwin!

Two new insurance members were accepted. They are Jessica Zellars and Emily Lauren Cleghorn. An add-on member is Zachary Benjamin Sullivan.

The Spacek children of Lodge 88 were accepted into Lodge 81. Welcome aboard!

Each month, the lodge donates four monetary prizes. The lucky winners for February were Winnie Susan, Victor Werner, Frances Pekar, and Louise Newman. We want to thank the following members for donating additional prizes. They are Louise Newman, Mary Matcek, Sophie Baethe, Vlasta Nowotny, the Victor Werners, the Adolph Machas, the Edwin Susans, the Alvin Blinkas, the Gilbert Walzels, the Vincent Newmans, and the Willie Witeks, The Vic Werners donated a jar of Valentine red hot candy. One of our new brothers, Dennis Kolar, guessed the nearest amount. There were 704 pieces of candy in the jar. Dennis missed the amount by 22. We hope you enjoyed the candy.

There was a grand total of 66 people at our meeting. The following people came from the former Guy lodge. Also, there were some new faces from Lodge 81 present. Their names include Harry and Helen Teykl, Wesley and Clara Mazac, Emma Foytek, and Joan Kettler with her husband, Harvey, as a guest.

Near the end of the meeting, Ludvik Surovec presented President Macha with the books from the Guy lodge. At the time of the merger, the following members held offices with the Guy lodge: Daniel Kolar, president; W L. Bacica, senior vice president; O.R. Miller, secretary; and Ludvik Surovec, treasurer.

Everyone, young and old, is starting to have spring fever. The week of March 13 to 17 is spring break for the pupils in most of our local schools. Students, be careful. Enjoy yourselves, but don't get into any trouble.

Benevolence Reporter Mary A. Kosut delivers the annual report on charity work at the January meeting. members assisted anyone who needed help in any way they could.

In 1994, the above members worked 602 hours.

Many of our members also volunteer out in the community on a regular basis.

Those members work a certain number of hours every week, week after week, all year long.

These members worked at St. Rose of Lima and All Saints Catholic Churches in Houston, Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church in Katy, St. Annes and Prince of Peace Catholic Churches in Tomball, Our Savior, Holy Cross, Gethsemane, Zion Lutheran Churches in Houston, St. Mark's Methodist, Houston Brethren, Garden Oaks Baptist, and Central Presbyterian Churches in Houston.

Some of these members worked at Autumn Hills, the SPJST Nursing Homes, M.D. Anderson, N.N. Memorial and Heights Hospitals, the Houston Jr. Forum, St. Vincent the Paul Society, and the Spring Branch Association for Retarded Citizens.

We also have a member working for the Boys and Girls Clubs at the Salvation Army. One of our members is also working for a Christian radio station. Some of our members regularly provide transportation for the handicapped and elderly.

We have members doing volunteer patrol work for the Shepherd Park Plaza Citizens Patrol, the Timbergrove Citizens Patrol, Springwoods and Timber Creek Civic Club, Candlelight Estates Neighborhood Patrol, and Shepherd Park Plaza Civic Club. We also have members volunteering for the Spring Branch Community College.

In 1994, the members who volunteered on a regular basis in the community worked 9,376 hours. So, the total number of hours spent doing charity work in 1994 amounted to 9,978 hours.

Our members also spend many hours working, without compensation, for our lodge.

Lodge 133, San Antonio Reports on February Meeting The regular meeting of Lodge 133, San Antonio was held on Sunday, February 19 at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center, located at 1314 Fair Avenue in San Antonio.

The Lodge Officer's Workshop will be held Saturday, MarCh 11 at Lodge 177, Academy. The Awards Banquet will follow and will be held at Lodge 80, Holland. Congratulations to Marlene Jarrett and Jarolyn Popp who were selected as outstanding sales representatives for 1994. They will be recognized at the Award's Banquet on March 11.

We would like to congratulate Enez Bienek and Frankie Campbell who are recognized for their longstanding membership with our society. They have been members since 1945 and will be presented with a 50-year pin at our next meeting on March 19.

A certificate of appreciation was received from the University of Texas at Austin for a donation that the lodge made to the Czech Education Society of Texas.

Viola Kurtz was reported as being ill.

We wish her a speedy recovery. Brother James Kostelnik passed away on February 17 at the age of 95. He had been a member of Lodge 133 for 76 years. We would like to express our sincere sympathy to his family and friends.

The newly-formed Lodge 182, Falls County met in the Sesco meeting room in Marlin on February 26 at 4 p.m.

President Donald Beckendorf presided. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States was led by the youth members.

The roll call of officers revealed all officers were present.

The minutes were read and they were approved.

Patsy Koslovsky, District Two Youth Counselor, was our guest speaker. She presented a large United States flag and stand to our lodge. This was donated by VFW Post 10377. We thanked her and were to send a thank you card to them.

She showed a filin of the children in camp riding horseback and swimming.

She told the youth about getting involved in projects and coming to the lodge meeting to receive points from the Supreme Lodge to be able to go to camp and other sponsored events. The Lodge 182 youth were invited to the District Two skating party in February and they enjoyed it very much.

The youth members were then excused to go to their youth meeting with Mrs. Koslovsky and Youth Leader Judy Treat. They were to elect their youth club officers.

President Beckendorf and members continued with the lodge business. We were told of the Incentive Award Banquet, hosted by SPJST Lodge 80, Holland and the Local Lodge Workshop, hosted by SPJST Lodge 177, Academy on March 11, 1995. Our officers planned to attend.

We were informed on how we can achieve the award by projects like sponsoring the youth members, sport events, charitable events, food baskets for the needy, and recycling.

We discussed the planning of the chartering of our SPJST lodge to be held at the Lott Volunteer Fire Department building on March 26, 1995, at 4 p.m.

We are planning the meal. We asked the women of the lodge to supply the desserts. Others were appointed to other chores on this day, March 26.

The members discussed the finances and dispensing of them.

We adjourned and had a prayer.

A covered dish meal was served by members of the lodge and enjoyed by all.

Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy Reports on March Meeting The meeting of Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy was opened by President Bob Miracle on Tuesday, March 1, 1995.

The minutes of the previous meeting was put off until our April meeting because the Secretary/Treasurer Linda Roming was in Houston.

All officers attending the meeting said they would be at the workshop at Lodge 177, Academy on March 11, 1995, at 9 a.m., and they were looking forward to attending the award's banquet at Lodge 80, Holland, starting at 3 p.m. This is Lodge 200's second year, and our goal for 1995 is to attend 1996's Award's Banquet.

Our second annual Valentine Social was held at Lodge 177, Academy. We had 22 members attending. All had a great time. Lodge 200 would like to extend a million thanks to Lodge 177 for their hospitality. They exemplify the meaning of real fraternalism.

A scholarship fund raiser was discussed and we do not know exactly what we will do yet. A committee of Harvey LaFlamme, Doug Roming and Earl Soudelier was appointed to discuss and report back.

Lodge 200 then voted on sponsoring a trophy for the Bruceville-Eddy Barbecue Cookoff at their Mayfest. Harvey LaFlamme said he would have a food booth at the Mayfest again this year.

Lodge 182, Falls County will be chartered on March 26, 1995, at the Lott Fire Department at 4 p.m. Gene McBride, Bob Miracle and Allen Trig volunteered to cook the barbeque for them. Lodge

200 also voted on donating $100.00 to Lodge 182 to help them get started.

The first meeting of the Lodge 200 Youth Club was March 1, 1995. They had eight excited kids and five adults at their meeting. The District Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky was there to help them get started and showed the youth club a video tape about the SPJST Youth Program. Lodge 200 thanks Patsy for coming because without expert help, getting started is sometimes very difficult.

The lodge watched the video tape on the youth club and decided to ask the youth club if they would put a float in the Mayfest parade as one of their first projects.

The last order of business was Harvey LaFlamme presenting $100.00 to the lodge from a special fund raiser he had.

Corpus Christi Circle of Women Reports on February Meeting Twenty-five members and one little guest, Brianna Elzner, met at Sokol Hall on Texas Independence Day. Brianna, granddaughter of Della Elzner, came with her Aunt Rebecca.

Museum Visit Due to a cool, cloudy day on February 9, only five of us visited the Corpus Christi Museum. We had a nice lunch and took the one-hour Captain Clark excursion around Corpus Christi Bay and the port area. The weather held and it was a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

The Museum has many interesting exhibits. We could have spent several hours just viewing them and the Xeriscaped garden next to the Museum itself.

An invitation was received from the Dallas Krouzek to attend the celebration of their 60th anniversary on April 2.

Jerry and Milly Elzner expressed their intention to attend the celebration along with Jim and Donna Havranek. Since my grandmother, Dolfi Stransky, was a charter member of this organization, I regret that I will be unable to attend.

However, we should get a first-hand report of the event.

Plans were made to work on Easter baskets for nursing home residents after our April 6 meeting. Betty Jurica and Kathy Marek will be heading up this project as they have been doing for many years. We can help by bringing Easter candy and cookies to fill the baskets and scissors, scotch tape, and ribbon for decorating them. Call Betty if you have any questions as to what is needed. Also, Jerry Elzner suggested that we donate items for a "care" package to be given to Iva Lyskova, a college student from the Czech Republic.

A donation in memory of Annie Spencer was received from Milly Elzner's niece, Karen Budinger of Westlake, Ohio. A donation was also received from Helen Sacky in memory of her husband, George Harris, who passed away on March 11, 1950.

Our March birthday girl, Velma Malchar, was not in attendance. We hope she is able to come to our meeting on April 6. In the meantime, we wish her a happy birthday.

At our previous meeting, it was decided to limit the number of door prizes to be given out to six. They were won by Helen Pavelka, Della Elzner, Lillie Hayek, Becky Elzner, Ella Simcik, and Norma Baker.

A delicious dinner was enjoyed by all but our gathering broke up early. No games were played as many members were facing a long drive on rain-slicked highways and were anxious to get home.

Hopefully, the weather will be more pleasant in April.

Czech Heritage Society Holds Spring Meeting The Wharton County Chapter was thrilled to host the Spring Meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

Approximately 300 people attended the March 4, 1995 meeting held at St. Andrew Parish Hall in Hillje, Texas.

The day began with coffee and a variety of homemade Czech pastries and visiting with friends and guests. There were booths with a variety of Czech glassware, crafts, jewelry, books, and family histories to buy or browse.

Chapter President Marie Matcek and Officers welcomed special guests and local, county, and disfrict officials: Judge Lawrence Naiser, Judge Daniel Sklar, Patrick Kubala, Evelyn Kramer, Delfine Marek, Katherine Drapela, Merill Adamicek, and Paul Soechting.

The members also welcomed students, teachers, and doctors from the Houston Medical Center, Michigan, and the Czech Republic. Members and county residents are asked to consider sponsoring a student or doctor in the exchange program.

An interesting program was given by Jaroslav Belik who specializes in "Kinetic Art". He shared what he designs, where he displays and all about his El Campo-Czech connection through his Grandmother Orsak.

Entertainment was provided by Frank Milder on accordion; Dorothy Ybarra, who sang "The Star Spangled Banner"; the East Bernard Czech Singers; and Chelsia Hubenak, who performed a dance routine.

The hall was decorated with a red, white and blue theme, and each table bloomed with a variety of spring flowers and ribbon. A noon meal of barbecue chicken, coleslaw, buttered potatoes, green beans, and desserts was served.

A special thanks is extended to the people who organized the meeting, those who helped set up and clean up, and the members and merchants who provided over 100 door prizes.

This is indeed a strong organization that works well together to preserve the Czech culture and heritage.

We also decorated our Seasonal Tree in St. Patrick's Day decorations. We recently bought the Season Tree for the nursing home so we can decorate it year round.

The visit was nice and everyone at the nursing home enjoyed the decorations.

A reminder about the March meeting — do not forget to bring your towels and washcloths that we are donating to the Entertainment Committee for the kitchen.

Also, do not forget to bring Easter decorations for the Easter hats we are going to make for the Moody Nursing Home Easter parade.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Reports on February Meeting Dear Members and Readers, Justin Miller, President, called the monthly meeting to order at 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15.

The anniversary day raffle netted our youth club $141.50. Thanks to everyone who supported our fund raiser. Thanks was also given to the youth club officers for donating the raffle prizes.

We discussed our upcoming trip on Saturday, February 18 to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. We will meet at Del Mar Stadium at 9 a.m. and return at 1 p.m. The youth club will pay for the shuttle ride and admission to the livestock show.

Other upcoming events discussed were: • District Five Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 5 at Lodge 172, Pasadena. Each youth is asked to provide a dessert, which will then be auctioned off at the meeting.

• District Five Easter Party on Saturday, April 1 at Lodge 88, Houston.

Youth club members will dye eggs on Friday, March 31 at 7 p.m. LIT's will return to decorate at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 1. The party time for all the youth will be 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

• District Five participation in the Strawberry Festival on Saturday, April 8 in Pasadena. Those who walk will be treated to lunch afterwards. Times will be forthcoming at the District Five meeting.

• Lodge 88 Youth Club's visitation to the Shriner's Hospital. The date was changed until April 15, so it would not conflict with the Strawberry Festival.

Dear Members, The Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club would like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone who supported our raffle at the Lodge 88 annual Anniversary Day Party and Dance. This was the 30th anniversary of our lodge building. It was held on Sunday, February 12, 1995.

Our youth club officers donated the raffle prizes. Thanks to Justin Miller, Michael Williams, Laura Farquhar, Christina Janak, Karen Bender, and Natalie Zalesky for donating the prizes.

We earned $141.50 on our fund raiser.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The youth club presented a Valentine's program at the monthly lodge meeting on Monday, February 12. We read poems and Karen Bender told a short version of the first Valentine's Day in England.

Those who participated were Lauren Godwin, Natalie Zalesky, Krystle Bender, Tamara Williams, Kristen Bender, and Karen Bender.

"Ctvrtek" is the fourth day of the week (fourth— etvrt). "Patek" is the fifth day (fifth— pat'). "Sobota" has its origin in the biblical Sabbath.

"Nedele" is the day when the Lord orders us not to work (Mat— to work; nedelat— not to work). This explanation of the origin of the words may perhaps help you to remember them better.

In most of Europe, there was one more holiday at Easter— "Pondelf Velikonoeni".— (Easter Monday).

That was the day for gaity. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day (Hod BO( velikonoenf,) as a day of rejoicing because of Christ's Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religious meaning— a solemn day. Adding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursuing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a "whipping" only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs. Some were fresh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells. They were fine examples of folk art. In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called

also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting victim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacity of the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday.

On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Vdclav) or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefska, Vdcla yska or Annenska zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one's Namesday or Birthday, people are congratulated as follows: V§ecko nejlepAi k svdtku— Everything best for your Namesday.

All the above can be preceded by "I wish you" In Czech— "Pfeji yam" or "Pieji Ti". The first is the polite and the latter the familiar form. The word "zdravf" stands for health, "§testf" for happiness, "spokojenost" for satisfaction, "narozeniny" for birthday, and "svatek" for namesday. As you can see, the above English translation of "mnoho §testf, zdravf a spokojenosti" is not a literal one. Learn the above phrases and use them in greeting those of your friends who know Czech.
