By Elizabeth Krajca SPJST Lodge No. 25 recently honored thirteen of its members for remaining with the lodge for 50 years. Present for the special occasion were SPJST Supreme Lodge President, Nick Morris of Temple and Sid Pokladnik, SPJST District II director from Dallas.

Mr. Morris commended these long-time members for joining during 1933, a time of great national depression. He pondered how they were able to raise the $2 or $3 that it took to pay their insurance premium with money so hard to come by.

AN HONEST, OPEN APOLOGY To Lodge No. 84, Dallas President Joe Ondrusek, all officers and members, the members of the CzechHarvester and Jodie Mikula Bands and ANY and ALL persons concerned— There is a saying: "There is always a first time!" and that happened in last week's issue dated March 30, 1983 on page 14. In the ad for Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84 the correct change of date (Saturday, April 2nd) was placed on the ad that had been published in an earlier issue advertising the HARVEST DANCE by mistake and, therefore, the wrong heading and, also, the wrong band name were published.

One of the typesetters at the pub lishing had a death in the family and we were running late with the composition of the Vestnik and the wrong ad was picked up by error.

This was the first time this happened in over 13 years for this editor, however, that is NO excuse and your editor accepts FULL RESPONSIBILITY for the mistake.

The error is NO fault of Lodge No. 84 President Joe Ondrusek or Brother Lada Cerny who submitted the ad correctly written. Again, sincere apology for any trouble caused to anyone. *** The Texas Department of Public Safety will continue to enforce the current mandatory liability insur ance law as enacted by the last session of the Texas Legislature. A recent Attorney General's opinion stated that failure to carry, produce or provide proof of insurance is not an offense. However, the opinion does not require DPS policy to be changed. The offense contained in the law is "failure to maintain financial responsibility," i.e., failure to maintain liability insurance.

The DPS director said the statute requires motorists to furnish information concerning evidence of insurance to a police officer upon request.

Failure to provide satisfactory information creates a rebuttable presumption under the statute that the motorist failed to maintain liability insurance. This presumption may be rebutted by presenting evidence to the judge that the motorist did in fact have insurance and the judge may dismiss the charge.

If the officer is not satisfied with the information provided, he can issue a citation. Troopers will continue to issue citations when drivers are unable to furnish satisfactory information, said the DPS director.

The Department of Public Safety issued rules when the law went into effect detailing examples of information which would be accepted as evidence of financial responsibility.

The items include the insurance

policy, insurance identification card, or other information which confirms to the satisfaction of the officer that the operator is in compliance with the law.

In an opinion dated 14 May 1982, the Attorney General upeheld these rules as binding on all law enforcement officers of the state.

If a person is unable to furnish the information requested by the officer, the officer may issue a citation even though the individual claims to have the required insurance.

DPS Colonel Adams stated that the law has produced positive results, and has resulted in an increase in the number of Texans who presently carry liability insurance.

Before the law was passed, 74 percent of the Texas motorists involved in vehicle accidents did have insurance. However, 1982 accident reports indicate that 91 percent of the drivers involved in vehicle accidents have obtained and maintain insurance.

Should you sign up for credit-card protection in case your cards are lost or stolen? For an annual fee, a firm will report lost or stolen cards, help with replacements and notify credit-card companies when clients change addresses. But be aware that what you are buying is a convenience service — not insurance. Losses already are limited by federal law to $50 per card, and most issuers don't even collect that much. ***

Czech Community & Friends Pay Tribute To Joe Patek's Orchestra The San Antonio Czech Community and friends, many of the SPJST Organization, paid tribute to Joe Patek's Orchestra who played at our Christmas Dance held December 18th. A wonderful time was held by everyone who attended; you would have thought that you were attend ing a New Year's Eve Dance by the large crowd, everyone had a nice time but, as time was nearing to the end, there were many thoughts and tears; everyone knew that Joe Patek's Orchestra is playing in San Antonio for the last time Joe has played at the Martinez Hall for the past 25 years; prior to that he played at the KC Hall on the Austin Highway. Many of us who have been here for the past 30 or more years have always followed his music; music that was always beautiful and, in a sense, had, its own tempo that was never equaled by anyone.

The members from the Martinez Club and friends presented Joe Patek and his orchestra a beautiful plaque commending him for his fine music and the many years that he brought our area so much laughter and fun.

Thank you, "Uncle Joe" as everyone calls him, and do come see us in San Antonio, once again, as a visitor.

A beautiful THANK YOU card was signed by all attending and presented to "Uncle Joe" by Anthony Tricilek, chairman of the Dance Committee.

District TII Fall Meeting The fall meeting of District VII was held at Lodge No. 107, Rozkvet Zapadu in Floresville September 12, 1982 at 1:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order

by District VII president Brother William Marek.

Brother Bob Bayer, president of Lodge 107, welcomed those present.

The District VII youth were called on to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was held in respect for our deceased members who had departed since the last meeting.

Secretary Betty Jurica read the minutes of the previous meeting; they were accepted as read.

Correspondence was read from Brother Rudy Sefcik, editor of Vestnik. He was unable to attend the district meeting due to another commitment.

Roll call of lodges revealed that eight lodges were represented.

They were No. 79 Corpus Christi, No. 107 Rozkvet Zapadu of Floresville, No. 117 Robstown, No. 137 Taft, No. 147 Vesela Osada of Jourdanton, No. 161 La Parita, No. 133 San Antonio, and No. 185 Hill Country of New Braunfels.

Brother Emil Matula, District VII treasurer, gave the following report: General Fund — $529.34 and Youth Fund — $528.34.

District VII Director Sister Thelma Hrncir welcomed all present. First of all, she recognized all sales representatives present.

She then stated that November 8th and 9th there will be training seminars held in San Antonio and Corpus Christi, and urged all sales representatives to attend these sessions because many new ideas will be presented. In her report she also mentioned that the "Top 20" sales representatives will be going to the Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera, Texas, March 11 through 13. Sister Hrncir also stated that $150,000 is allocated to each district for loans at 14 1/2 percent and that there is no rush on loans. Scholarships will be available to members of SPJST: a freshman will get $1,000 and undergraduate —$500. Those who are interested must have their application at the Supreme Lodge

by December 31, 1982. The dedication of Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena will be held November 7th. She also reported on the History of the SPJST. The final OK is to be in October and should go on sale January 1, 1983. Donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund.

October 12, 1982 officers of the Supreme Lodge will meet at La Grange Court House where a plaque is to be placed; this is the place where the SPJST was organized.

Then, the officers will proceed to the Supreme Lodge and continue with the regular quarterly meeting.

District VII Youth Counselor Maxine Pavliska gave her report.

Climax- of the year was District VII youth members made silk flowers and dipped candles, thin,ty-five youngsters attended camp and there were seven staff members, nine leaders and a nurse and, at the State Youth Activity Day, District VII had seven first-place winners.

Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncir reported that August 7th he made a trip to Needville and stated improvements are needed at the rest home in Needville. The S.P.J.S.T. rest homes' rates of occupancy are $200 per month less compared to other rest homes. In the future a wing may be added to the rest home at Needville.

Brother Emil Matula of the Publication Committee reported that Brother Edward Mazanec, chairman of the PC, had resigned and that, at the next quarterly meeting, an appointment will be made to serve in his place.

At this time a youth program was presented by the following youth, Jackie Burleson, Rusty Condro, Stephanie Burleson, Annette Dzuik, Angie Hrncir and Jennifer Marek.

Meeting reconvened following the short program.

Nominating Committee was appointed consisting of Sister Helen Pavelka, Sister Kathryn Marek and Brother Bob Bayer.

A discussion was held on ideas of holding our fall meeting. Members were asked to bring ideas to the spring meeting; most of the members present were in agreement that a social meeting be held in the fall.

Next District VII meeting will be hosted by Lodge No. 107 in Floresville.

Meeting adjourned at 3:32 p.m.

President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at approximately 2:05 p.m.

Wednesday, April 6, 1983—VPSTMK/5 Flag Bearer Penny Spitzenberger started off the meeting by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had eight officers present and five absent; there was a total of fifteen members attending.

Sister Dorothy Rackel read the secretary's minutes, and Sister Madelene Iselt gave a financial secretary report, while Sister Kim Abshire gave the treasurer's report; all of these reports and minutes were accepted as read.

For old business we discussed the matter of minors drinking in our hall when we have public dances. A decision was left up to the trustees of our lodge to find a solution so that there would be no problem of our lodge being closed down to the public. The decisions were made to: 1) Add another person to the stamping-line to recheck IDs. 2) Have another floor chairman to help out at dances no matter what the size is, and to stay there at all times until the end of the dance.

3) People working in the bar to double-check 'the marking on the hands of the person wanting to buy beer.

4) If bar-person is not sure of stamp, recheck ID. People who come to the dances at Lodge No. 13 would be a big help if they were to try to stop minors drinking by telling them the reason or, if they want, report them to the floor chairman. Lodge 13 would appreciate your support very much.

A discussion was held on the kitchen whether or not we should keep it open during dances or not.

The decision was that it should be kept open and that people working in the kitchen should get their food free and buy drinks, while people in the bar buy food and get drinks free.

The ticket salesman and stampers will have their choice which they prefer.

No. 28, East Bernard Meeting

Dear Members: As mentioned in the previous communique, our April meeting is going to be the 10th, at 2 p.m., in our hall. The agenda will cover the normal monthly reports, special reports and business needing attention; also, there will be plans made to attend the District VI spring meeting April 24, in Inez, Texas.

The social "Gathering" will take place after the meeting.

The March meeting, on the 6th, started on time (2 p.m.). All reports were accepted as given. Some motions were made and passed pertaining to lodge business. All, present, were reminded of the April meeting date and the District VI meeting date.

The door prize was won by Sister Julie Janik. It was good to see Sister Janik for she has had a very hard time getting to the meetings since her husband's passing away.

The social hour was well-attended and enjoyed by all. Sisters Janik, Haverda, Schank, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval finished filling the table.

The lodge furnished some of the liquid refreshments and some of the sandwiches..

In this meeting we had a baker's dozen present. There were some known regulars, who were absent because they had to be somewhere else. Now, this writer wishes to call your attention to the previous communique and remind all of our members to make some effort to attend some of the scheduled meetings. Contrary to beliefs, the meetings, today, are mostly conducted (99.98%) in the English language. If and/or when someone does express themselves in the Czech language, there is always someone to translate and vice versa.

Taylor Lodge Hosting Czech Club Dance The Taylor SPJST Lodge 29 members held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, March 13, 1983 at 4 p.m.

President Edwin Adamek called the meeting to order and Denisse Wuensche, representing the Youth club, presented the flag. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, we remained standing for a few moments of silence for our deceased Brothers 0. H. Schramm and Charlie Kaiser and Sister Alma Sladek.

We then had roll call of officers; all were present, except Albin and Elaine Machu.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and all the reports were also given.

New members accepted were John Emil Pokorny and Maurice Giraldi.

Youth Club Leader Melvin Steger reported he had 28 members present, 8 adults and 3 new members. They had an Easter egg hunt. Last month they had a Skating Party in Temple and 30 youth members attended that party. For next month they plan to go to the Ice Capades at the Erwin Events' Center in Austin.

For the May Fete we plan to have barbecue, potato salad, beans and slaw. The members will help make this meal.

Don't forget about the Czech Club dance that is coming up Saturday, April 16 at our hall; there will be a meeting in the afternoon and the dance at night is open to the public, music will be provided by the Brave Combo. We understand that this band comes from around Dallas-Fort Worth and that they also played for the Westfest in West, so make your plans to come to this occasion.

84, Dallas Reports Successful Celebration Lodge

Dear Members: The regular meeting of Lodge No. 84 was called to order by President Joe Ondrusek.

Flag Bearer Cheri Petr led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sister Salac read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved.

Reports were given by Entertainment Chairman Ron Coker, who also thanked everyone for the work and support to make our 73rd birthday a success. We were honored by the presence of two Supreme Lodge officers; namely, Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and Sister Mikeska, also District III Director Sid Pokladnik and Sister Pokladnik as well as officers from other local lodges, who represented their Society. Brother Pokladnik, who presented the 50-year members their pins, stated it gave him pleasure and satisfaction to see so many present. Our "Brother and Sister" award of Lodge 84 was presented by Brother Ron and Sister Linda Coker (Last year's winners) to Brother Chas Prasifka and Sister Betty Olson. Our congratulations! vided great music to delight everyone, and our youth members performed well on the stage and, as Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported in the meeting, she was "proud of all of them."

During the lodge meeting President Joe Ondrusek expressed his thanks to our honored guests, members and friends who joined us for a great Sunday celebration.

Thanks were given to those who brought pastry for the delicious dinner prepared by the kitchen group, the Decorating Committee (by the way) the paperbaskets and eggs will be sent to the Children's Medical Center) and he thanked anyone responsible for adding to the enjoyment of the day.

Sister Dorothy Prasifka reported that sympathy cards were sent to Brother Jerome Zabojnik who lost his father and Sister Cecile Kretsinger who lost her brother. May the departed rest in peace.

Get-well cards went to Brother Frank Zastoupil, Sister Geraldine Becan, Brother Emil Nekuza, Brother Jerry Urban, and Sister Keri Andreason.

Congratulations card was sent to Larry Sadecky family (a baby boy); a card to the grandparents Brother Hank and Sister Alfrieda Sadecky.

A baby girl was born to Brother Jack and Sister Barbara Wolfe. Congratulations cards were also sent to grandparents Brother Willie and Carlyn Ondrusek and great-grandmother, Sister Sophie Olsowski. By the way, our lodge President Joe Ondrusek and his wife, Sister Timpy, are uncle and aunt to this baby girl.

I just thought I would add this bit of information in: Brother Adolph Salac, House Committee chairman, thanked all who helped with the yard and kitchen cleanup last Sunday, also for the hamburgers served.

Sister Lillie Jarma reported on the Czech Culture Society stating that this year, again, the group

elected Brother Stanley Patak to lead them as its president. Please note Czech Day at the Texas State Fair this year is October 16th.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council meets April 21st at our Lodge 84 on 2625 Floyd Street, with WOW as its host.

Brother Ben Jarma was meeting with the ball team members and will report to us at the next meeting, but sent word in to remind everyone to attend the team's benefit dance for April 30th; the Czech Harvesters will play.

The Czech Harvesters will also play April 2nd for your dancing pleasure; and April 16th it's the Czechmates.

SPJST Lodge 87 will hold their regular meeting Friday evening, April 8th at 7 p.m., with President Vlasta Jez presiding.

Our special get-well wishes go to Bradley Bell who has been very ill; we are so happy that he is reported to be improving.

You will laugh when Abby's niece and her fiancee discover what Abby had done, and laugh even more when you see what they do about it.

The cast for this enjoyable play consists of some who have performed in other plays on our stage, and some newcomers who show great promise. Aunt Abby is portrayed by Marie Stayton, who has participated in several English plays. Abby's niece, Anna, is played

by Gerry Lynn Stodard, who will be making her debut in this performance.

Lodge No. 88 News The Al Pierson Big Band USA held Saturday, March 26 was really a gala affair. The Chandelier Ballroom was filled almost to capacity with lovely-dressed ladies, dancing to the ballroom music with handsome escorts. The dance was in charge of Millie Manack, and Margaret Allbritton helped Millie with seating the guests. Entertainment Chairman Homer Alexander was on hand to help out in the rush time.

Amos Kadlecek took care of the box office because there were few without reservations. Della Kadlecek greeted the arriving guests. All the ladies on the committee were dressed to blend in with the guests.

Last week, when I wrote about the lucky people to enjoy three days at Camp Mayan Bandera, I skipped a deserving sales representative, our lodge President Larry Pflughaupt and his lovely spouse, Dorothy. I am sure they also enjoyed the outing and fraternal fellowship.

Again this year, the Choral Club (under the direction of Tim Kostom) and the Czech Concert Orchestra (with Director Rudy Dybala), both of Lodge 88, participated in the annual Houston Festival which lasts a week and the two groups performed the last day of the festival Sunday, March 27th. Sixteen orchestra members and twenty-two Choral Club members were present. These two groups participated at the Houston Festival, on invitation, for many years. The weather was just beautiful, bright and sunny with a blue cloudless sky above, a little windy, but pleasant. Many organizations of various nationalities took part in this festival. Hundreds of people lounged on the sloping grounds covered with grass. It was the old market square, and we could remember way back and visualize the old City Market with the late Brother Louis Rulik, Sr. behind the counter of his famous delicatessen store, with all the special mouthwatering meats and his' specialty: home-cured ham. I have not tasted ham like Rulik's ham ever since the market was closed and the building demolished. Louis Rulik, Sr. was active at Lodge 88 and his only son, the late Louis, Jr. helped organize the first Youth Club which was dissolved after the young men were called for duty in World War II; after the war he moved to San Diego, California with his parents; their daughter, Jennie Mae, married to Karel Frank, still lives in San Diego. Jennie Mae, a fine pianist, accompanied many operettas for the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club with unforgettable Frank Hlavaty on his violin.

Her mother, the late Marie Rulik, was one of the first Birthday Club members. All these memories came back to us while we sat on the sloped grounds of the unforgettable City Market, waiting for our time to perform for one hour.

Our two groups, the Choral Club and the Czech Concert Orchestra, after a performance feel we fulfilled

a community service for our City of Houston. Director Brother 'Rudy Dybala, with a few words before the program, outlined the activities at Lodge No. 88.

The English play, "Aunt Abby Answered Am Ad" is in full swing and will be presented on our stage May 22 in the afternoon. Sister Marie Stayton, director of this play, is very satisfied with the progress and praises the volunteered actors. It is a comedy and all are very satisfied with the progress, so come out Sunday, May 22nd and show your appreciation to the actors who donate their time to show and give you a pleasant Sunday afternoon, May 22nd.

JUST A REMINDER: Sunday, April 30 we will have our Cleanup Day; wake up early and come right out to join the working force at Lodge No. 88 to perform your fraternal duty. We need you and it will give you a lot of satisfaction to show your fraternal spirit. Come out Sunday, April 30th!

San Antonio Lodge Celebrates 66th Anniversary Lodge 133 celebrated their lodge birthday Sunday, March 20, 1983 at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers Street.

The membership was treated to a barbecue dinner with all the trimmings and some of the best lemon and pecan pie I have ever eaten. There was so much left that the members had plenty to eat later in the afternoon. We wish to thank all the members who participated in making this event so successful. The responsibility for having enough food and the decorating of the tables takes a lot of time. Thank you, members, for a wonderful dinner.

The president opened the meeting after the dinner; the membership was led in the Pledge of Allegiance and also a moment of silence was held for all our departed members, remembering Brothers Frank Mazac and William Naquin.

Our secretary reported that all officers were present. The minutes of the last meeting were read. There were no additions nor deletions.

The treasurer's report was dis pensed with until the next meeting.

Brother Anthony Tricilek, Entertainment chairman, gave a report and it was a very good report, also in detail. We want to compliment Brother Anthony for the fine work that he is doing as our chairman. (As I have mentioned before, in my reports, the attendance at our monthly meetings is very encourag ing.) In the past two years the members have responded very well in attending the meetings. Let's hope that the interest will continue throughout the year.

President Emil Matula was quite stunned when Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik was giving a summary on a member who has worked so hard for our lodge, who is so dedicated and has been for many years. This was quite a surprise when President Emil Matula (left) presented a plaque to Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik for his unselfish dedication of many years as secretary and president of Lodge 133. Brother Henry Harbort, also, after giving the members a summary of the many years of hardwork, as vice president and president called out for Brother Bill Mares to step forward who was quite shocked, Bill, not knowing who Brother Harbort was talking about, deserved being recognized for the many years of self-dedication. Brother Bill was president in 1960 when we had our first SPJST Convention in San Antonio.

President Matula said it was an honor for him to bestow the 50-year pins to two of our members, Sister Viola Fajkus and Brother Otto Hurta; both members are very active and we certainly congratulate them because it is always an honor to present such awards.

Sister Grace Rohan also of Lodge 133 is seen cutting the Birthday Cake for the celebrants. Sister Rohan was recently promoted to vice president at the Jefferson State Bank. Congratulations to you. Sister Rohan is on the Lodge 133 Social Committee.

We wish to remind all members that the District VII meeting will be held in Floresville Sokol Hall, April 10th. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. Let's show our support for this fine event by attending because it is just a short drive from San Antonio, the view along the highways will be beautiful—full of blooming Blue Bonnets and other flowers. I am sure that Lodge No. 107 will have a very interesting program like they always do have. See you there!

Sister Marcella Kleprlik spoke to the members about the second Album that is being made. The beginning will show the many pictures and programs of the past convention.• It is very interesting and, as she said, she is missing the 1979 Vestnik, also the 1981; so if, any of you nice people have these copies, will you please contact me at 5323916; we would appreciate it very much. The book will contain items of interest to many of our young members and give them an incentive to continue the good work of Lodge No. 133.

We hope everyone had a very happy Easter and remembered the meaning of this beautiful celebration; so many times our beautiful holidays are completely lost in the commercial stream.

Fifty Year Pin Presented March 13, 1983

Angelo Lodge To Host D IV Meeting

Mrs. Steffie Dornak of El Campo received her 50 year SPJST pin at the regular meeting of Lodge 138, Ganado. She was presented her pin by her daughter, Mrs. Margie Kulcak of Hillje. Mrs. Kulcak serves as youth leader of Lodge 40, El Campo and by her active participation in SPJST work she carries on a tradition started by her grandfather and Mrs. Dornak's father, George Vaculin.

Mrs. Dornak reported that her father was one of the men who met to organize the SPJST in Texas.

Mrs. Dornak was almost two years old at the time she and the other three Vaculin children were signed up as members. She became a full member at 16 and continued her membership for the next 50 years; a total of 65 years carrying SPJST insurance.

The Vaculin family lived in Taylor 12 years; her father helping to build the first SPJST Hall there. The family moved to Cameron and then to Blessing. It was in Blessing that Mrs. Dornak became a full member.

She married Emil Dornak in 1937 and soon after moved to Ganado where the family became members of Lodge 138.

Mrs. Steffie Dornak's two daughters and her eight grandchildren all belong to SPJST—truly an SPJST family.

154 Ft. Worth To Host District III Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: Just a reminder of the District III meeting Sunday, April 10th. The agenda was in last week's issue and I hope all of you saw it.

Sisters please bring pastry to District III meeting.

I failed to mention our next meeting will be Sunday, May 8th; since it falls on Mother's Day; it was voted for the lodge to furnish a meat dish and sisters are asked to bring vegetables, salad or pastry. Dinner will be served at 2 p.m. and the meeting starts at 3 p.m., so mark this date.

We extend our congratulations to Steve Allen and Sister Kathy Anne Siebenthall who were wed at the Robert Carr Chapel on the Texas Christian University Campus.

Kathy Anne is the daughter of Brother Raymond and Sister Margaret Harvrylak. May they have a long and happy life together.

In my directions to the hall, I failed to mention if anyone coming out 199 West (Jacksboro Highway), come to Skaggs on one corner, Waffle House on the other, turn right and go 3 miles; just past the 820 overpass. We will be looking forward to seeing you all.

173 Announces April 18th Meeting Lodge

Dear Editor and Vestnik Readers: Our Galveston Lodge 173 held its monthly meeting Monday, March 21st at 7:10 p.m. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, then regular business followed.

President Alvin Sefcik reported nine members attended the District V meeting March 20 at Pasadena, and a good time was reported by all who went.

Reported on the sick list were Brother Clarence Fee who recently was in the hospital for tests and Sister Bessie Findley had to have some tests taken, also reported was that Sister Frances Kaluza had the flu and Brother Charles Bures has been under the weather for about two months.

At our next meeting will be a covered dish meal held Monday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Guarantee Federal Building at the corner of First Street and Laurel in La Marque, Texas. We encourage you to come out and bring enough food for your family and do attend to enjoy fellowship with the other members of your lodge.

They indicated they were preparing for a March 17th St. Patrick's meeting and going to Lodge 84 in Dallas, March 27 (on a Sunday) to meet with District III Youth Counselor Bessie

Trustee Vice Chairman Leroy Hampton and Secretary Mydell Grochoske gave reports from the trustees' meeting. The appreciation night out for 1982 trustees and spouses at Cattlemen's Steak House in Fort Worth for March 17 at 7:30 p.m. was mentioned.

Reports on the sick list were Joyce Russell, her mother is in the hospital in Oklahoma, and Ben Welch, Sr. is recovering from surgery. We wish you all a speedy recovery.

We accepted and welcome three new members, Kenneth Doucet, Allen Howell and Ben Welch, Jr. Sales Representatives Jerry Janek and Mydell Grochoske were the ones who signed up these members.

Door prize was won by Leroy Hampton.

Thanks to all the Supreme Lodge officers, directors, Field Managers Silas Smith, Gene McBride and spouses for the fun-filled weekend at Mayan Dude Ranch, in Bandera, Texas which was quite an event by all, even if you couldn't get going the next day after riding horses.

I would like to remind our members, families and friends of important dates and functions: April 10, 1983 (Sunday) — District III spring meeting at Lodge 154 on Boat Club Road at Fort Worth, Texas beginning at 10 a.m.

Flash From Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities

News

Dear Members: Sunday, March 27th there was a special meeting at the lodge for a formal discussion on the possible new building for the lodge home of 183; there were 18 members present. President Phill Boyle told all present about the building and the possible costs to the membership. All those present drove out and looked at the building and voted to let the Building Committee work out the details and a final vote will be taken at our regular meeting Sunday, April 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the lodge.

Have you heard about the Italian immigrant who walked into a Fifth Ave. Bank and said. "Pordona miaI'd like to talk with the fellow that arranges loans." The guard replies: "I'm sorry, but the loan arranger is out to lunch." "In data case, I talk to Tonto!"

The lodge voted to rescind the motion to not meet in June, July and August since there were some objections; you will be kept informed in the Vestnik if there is any change in the future.

Dear Members and Friends: In the spring the days get longer, the winter snows melt, and the streams start running. New life springs from the earth as the mother birds go about building their nests while their mates sing from near by flowering orchards. New growth pops up all around us and, of course, these signs all signify that Easter is almost here. It is also a gentle hint for us to get out our garden tools and lawn mowers.

The Ladies' Circle met with Mary Powers, president, presiding; Hermina Cihacek, vice-president and treasurer; and Clara Marchioni, secretary.

After the minutes were read and approved, Lillie McMillen made a motion to send $10 to the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge #92 Building Fund in memory of Mary Hubenak, who was first president of this Ladies' Circle and a former youth leader. The motion was seconded and passed.

A "Thank You" card was received from the Slovak and Carl Zich families, also one from Mary Pavey.

We were so glad to hear that she was improving and would soon be able to attend our meetings again.

We are sorry to hear that Maggie Konecny had fallen and hurt herself and that Frances Simmank is also sick. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Czech Class At Alvin Community College

The Czech classes at Alvin Community College do not give-up easily.

8[VESTN1K-Wednesday, April 6, 1983 The determination to continue always overcomes the submissive attitude of 'give in'.

At this time, our February, 1983 Czech group still has two remaining class periods before the spring term ends. Deliberate effort, unfailing energy and ever-evolving spirit prevails term after term.

As in previous years we are giving two $400 scholarships to ACC students. School policy prevents us in allocating the funds to any ethnic group. For that reason, a lucky science student and a nursing student will be selected as recipients. Winners do not necessarily have to be of Czech lineage.

Proof of our "porad kupredu" spirit is exemplified by the youngest in attendance at picture taking time.

Little Adam Vosta will some day show the rest of us what it's all about.

Heritage Class At Temple Junior College Czech

A Continuing Education Class in Czech Heritage Studies will start at Temple Junior College Thursday, April 7. The class will meet from 7 to 10 p.m. for three consecutive Thursdays through April 21.

The course will emphasize the origins, development, and present state of the Czech heritage in Texas.

It is designed to make persons of Czech descent aware of their rich Czech heritage.

The course also will acquaint nonCzechs with their Czech neighbors and will prepare persons for research into the many aspects of the Czech heritage in Texas. The course will include lecture, audio visual presentations, and student participation.

• The cost of the class is $10 and will meet in Room 302 of the Newton Science Building on the TJC campus. Instructor for the course will be Calvin C. Chervenka of the TJC faculty.

Alief Independent School District is preparing to offer Czech I (Beginning Czech) this summer at its community evening school pending on sufficient interest in the area.

The proposed 9 weeks summer course will be held on Tuesday nights from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. starting June 7th. John J. Karas will be the instructor of this course. Tuition, set by the school district, will be $50. This course will develop basic Czech grammar with simple vocabulary for practical use wherever Czech is spoken.

NEWSBRIEF J. M. Baker, 75, died in a Brookshire Nursing Home on March 25th.

Funeral services were held from the Schmidt Funeral Home in Katy on the 28th of March with interment in Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston. Bro. Baker was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 111 when it was located in Sugar Land. He is survived by his wife, Anna Baker.

HEAR YE, YOUTH LEADERS AND ASSISTANTS OF DISTRICT V & VII! AN INVIATION TO ATTEND On behalf of District Youth Counselors Dorothy Pflughaupt (V) and Maxine Pavliska (VII), this is a cordial invitation to the youth leaders and their assistants to attend a joint districts training class at Grumpy's Restaurant in Flatonia Saturday, April 16th, starting at 10 a.m. Grumpy's is located at the intersection of I-10, Hwy 95, and U.S. 90 that goes from Houston to San Antonio. Grumpy's is just north of downtown Flatonia and very easy to find. Those attending should consult area maps on the best way to reach. Flatonia.

Topics and areas to be reviewed include going over the partially revised Youth Rule Book, discussing camp dates and activities, YADs, and all forms used in the Youth Department. The camp craft for this year will be shown and demonstrated. SYD Jann Wilson will be on hand to assist Dorothy and Maxine.

Those attending are asked to bring a notepad and pencil for taking notes and funds for the noon meal and morning and afternoon refreshments. Those attending will be reimbursed for the meal and there will be a nominal reimbursement for round-trip mileage. Every effort, however, should be made for those coming from one area to car pool. Mileage reimbursement will be for the owner/driver of the car.

It's to your advantage and that of the youth in your charge to attend.

A total of $605.00 reimbursement was mailed from the Home Office.

Twenty-five youth clubs sent in a report and a total of eighteen "No Reports" were recorded. The average youth attendance to monthly youth club meetings for this past quarter was 403. This can be partially attributed to the Christmas holidays and the New Year.

Spring is here, YADs are set and other activities are planned. The monthly attendance will increase as these activities occur.

We will have a covered dish luncheon at noon, so this should save some time and we can be through earlier.

Our District IV meeting will be April 24 at Wall, Texas, so the youth will have the same contests as other years.

1) Each youth club may have a skit or number on the program, or any youth members from any of the other lodges may do the same.

2) A booth of items for sale or anything that they think will sell.

YAD will be held Sunday, June 12 at Seymour, at the Senior Recreation Center. Youth members, be thinking of entering all you can so we can have a big YAD this year.

Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat will be held May 14th and 15th at Camp Val Verde; it has been printed in the Vestnik many times. I hope all our youth leaders and assistants can attend' this year.

There is much valuable information to be gained by attending this retreat.

Camping this year will again be with District I at Val Verde, August 8 (arrive for lunch), August 9, August 10, and August 11 4depart after lunch). Do come and plan to attend this year.

State Competition: State YAD

EVENTS DISCUSSED BY ROBSTOWN 117 YC Dear Readers, April 10th the District VII Spring meeting will be hosted by Floresville Lodge 107. At this time I would again like to encourage all District VII youth to attend, as our District Youth Counselor has planned a special outing. If you fail to attend you will be missing a special treat.

Also each youth club will have a booth (table set up) to sell various items. Each Youth Club in our district is encouraged to do this.

At our March Youth Club meeting, the youth and some adults made Easter Baskets for a local nursing home. I would like to thank two of our parents, Mrs. Ellzey and Mrs. Engel for helping us. Also Mrs. Engel, Mrs. Jurica and Mrs. Marek made cookies to take to the nursing home along with the baskets.

March 27th the Youth Club President Todd Ellzey, Youth Leader Mrs. Betty Jurica and Assistant Youth Leader Kathryn Marek took the Easter Baskets and cookies to the nursing home. You can't imagine the joy and excitement these people feel for getting something such as this. They seemed to really enjoy these baskets and having visitors.

While we were there another organization came to play bingo with the residents and brought refreshments. They also brought prizes for bingo. The ones who were playing bingo seemed to enjoy it and all were eager to win a prize.

In closing I hope to see many of you at the District VII meeting April 10th!

LODGE 39 YC ENJOYS MARCH ACTIVITIES Dear Readers: The youth of Lodge 39, Bryan, have been busy during the month of March, indeed.

The fun began as Tuesday, March 8th marked the date of our Chuck-ECheese Pizza Theatre Social. All of our youth attended and enjoyed shows, pizza, and all kinds of arcade games. We really had a great time!

Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday afternoon, March 13th.

We collected 48 Children's books to distribute to the Children's Ward at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan as our March Charity Project. Congratulations youth for a job so well done!

We are still collecting recipes for our cookbook fund-raising project.

Our agenda consists of further discussion on our cookbooks, District I meeting April 24th, a social to be planned for May, and we will rehearse our Group Talent Skits for YAD. Dear Readers, At our last Youth Club meeting, which was held March 20, 1983, we had 21 members present.

Joe Giarrusso called the meeting to order.

We talked about the District I meeting which was held in Taylor at Lodge 29 at 1 p.m. March 27th. We had 7 members from the Round Rock Youth Club who went to the meeting.

We also talked about the Easter egg hunt that was held March 26; we had 19 members present from the Youth Club. We hunted eggs at 2 p.m. and afterwards whoever had the most eggs won a prize.

At our next Youth Club meeting which will be April 17, we will go roller skating at Skate World in Austin from 2:30 to 4 p.m., then we will come back to the lodge and have our meeting and afterwards we will have a covered dish supper. At the end of the meeting we have door prizes that will be given away.

At our last meeting Dana Volek won an Easter egg cake.

The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting March 6, 1983 at the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order by President Vicki Dorotik.

We discussed the District VI meeting in Inez for April 24th. We also discussed having a • Home Product Sale to raise money for our youth club. If anyone needs anything, call one of the members.

A thank you note was read from Michelle Srubar and also from Hillje Rest Home for the Valentine favors we niade for them.

Our meeting date had to be changed because the first Sunday falls on Easter. Our next meeting will be April 10 at 2:30 p.m.

Dear Vestnik Readers: Every few months, our Lodge 74 Youth Club organizes a cake auction on Saturday nights. We will be having another cake sale in April after the Easter holidays. She said the youth club would have the cake walk at the dance April 16 and every youth is urged to come out and help with it.

After her report, we played the game brought by Janice Stanislay.

After the game we had the door prize drawings. The winners were Larry Brem and Lanette Nors.

Dear Readers, The March meeting of Lodge 66 Youth Club was called to order March 20, 1983 at 1:30 p.m. by President Miss Karen Shelton.

There were 12 members present.

Karen Shelton also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Youth Club Secretary Miss Janice Stanislav called the roll and read the minutes of the previous meeting.

There were no corrections and the minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Donna Stanislav gave her report and everything was in good order.

The youth club decided to continue collecting soup labels, "Post" coupons, coffee cans, egg cartons and grocery sacks. A special thank you to the moth: - odge for helping us with col._ these items.

FRANK L. MAZAC, who died Sunday, March 6th at the Southeast Baptist Hospital of heart failure.

Frank was born to Frank and Anna Manak Mazac in Taylor, Texas June 3, 1908. From Taylor the family moved to Sugar Land, Texas, then later to Wilson County; when still as a boy he lived on a farm near Floresville and Poth, Texas. He left farming at the age of 20. At Poth, Texas he was working at a gas station, also learning to be a mechanic for Stavinoha Chevrolet Co. November 10, 1931 he married Viola Miculka of Floresville, Texas.

In 1938 they moved to San Antonio, Texas where he was employed by the Government at Camp Normayle as an auto machinist, later being transferred to the Red River Ordnance Depot in Texarkana, Texas.

Again, in 1945, he moved back to San Antonio and lived at 1431 Steves Ave. He was a long time SPJST member, also member of Hermann Sons.

Brother Frank is survived by his wife, Si ter Viola Mazac; his mother, Anna Mazac of Floresville, Tex.; son and c'.'Inghte:-in-law Mr. &.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 8th at 11 a.m. at the Mission Park Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Hugo Hannusch of Holy Cross Lutheran Church officiating.

Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers were his nephews, Robert Mazac, Eugene Stavinoha, Leo Zahn, Raymond Pace, Robert Pace and Wayne Haecker. Honorary pallbearers were, Larry Bravenec, Donald Haecker, Earnest Hrncirik, R. A. Hrncirik, Joe Hrncirik, Leroy Mazac and Ronnie Miculka.

Brother Frank will be missed by all the members: he was a very active member, and even through his long illness, he always made the meetings whenever it was possible.

His wife, Sister Viola Mazac, who is our treasurer, was always helped by Frank carrying her books, etc. To her and her family, may God give you comfort, and may our departed Brother Frank rest in peace.

Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Sister Dubcak was born in Milam County, the daughter of Joe and Francis (Orsag) Kolay, early settlers of the area. She was a housewife and devoted mother.

Her husband, Joe Dubcak died in 1976.

Survivors are three sons, Clarence Dubcak, Joe Daniel Dubcak and Julius James Dubcak, all of Temple; a brother, Walter Kolay of Temple; two sisters, Frances Hutka of Temple and Annie Chupik of Belton; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Green was born in Meeks and lived in Bryan prior to moving to Temple in 1959. He was a World War II veteran and was manager of Temple Transfer Co. from 1959 until his retirement in 1975.

Mr. Green was a member of First Methodist Church, Civitan Club, American Legion and a life-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his widow, Carolyn (Zajicek) Green of Temple; a son, Gilbert G. Green of Temple, his mother, Mathilda J. Horn of Temple; and seven brothers, Elo Green of Waco, Willis Green, Melvin Green, Garlin Green and Henry Green, all of Temple, Virgil Green of Burlington and Michael Green of Round Rock.

Funeral services for Brother Divis were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 19 at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple, with Rev. Mark Labaj officiating. Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Brother Divis was reared and attended schools in the Red Ranger community. Prior to moving to Dallas 13 years ago, he had resided in Seaton and Temple. Brother Divis had worked as a clerk for 7-11 stores, retiring in 1980.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jerry Ann Schiller of Temple; three brothers; John Divis and George Divis, both of Temple and Joe Divis of Seaton; 3 sisters, Mrs. Livie Motl of Hempstead, Mrs. Albina Rychlik of San Angelo and Mrs. Vlasta Sims of Moody; and 2 grandsons.

Bobby Joe Cleveland In Hollywood Movie The SPJST's "Tiny Tim" of yesteryear has a role in a new movie called "Streamers". The film is being filmed in Dallas and will premiere sometime in November of this year.

Bobby Joe is the son of Bob & Carolyn Cleveland of Fort Worth and all are members of SPJST Lodge No. 154 Fort Worth. Bobby Joe plays the part of a new recruit who is always falling asleep and getting into trouble. In one of the scenes his buddies put a firecracker in his bed.

The director of the movie is Robert Altman, director of the recently-concluded television series, M*A*S*H. Bobby Joe was a State YAD winner in talent when he was six years old and did an imitation and pantomime of "Tiny Tim", who at the time had popularized the song "Tiptoe Through The Tulips".

Bobby Joe did the pantomime to that number. The State YAD that year was held at El Campo High School. He is now 19 years old.

Bobby Joe also had a head-on collision this past January when he totalled his car and was confined to the hospital, but is now recovered.

More misfortune entered the Cleveland Family when his sister Carrie, a member of Sokol, fell from the uneven parallel bars in January and pulled the ribs from her rib cage. In February his younger brother Ky fell down the stairs and fractured his arm. In addition, Carolyn Cleveland's aunt, Mary Pavey, was in the hospital for six weeks earlier this year critically ill with pneumonia.

We wish Bobby Joe well in his new artistic venture. Those who attended SPJST camp with Bobby Joe and who are acquainted with him know that he is a natural born comedian. We also wish a rapid and full recovery to his sister and younger brother and to Mary Pavey.

SPJST Makes Annual Contribution To Sokol It was on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of Sokol Ennis February 13th that the annual contribution from the SPJST was made to the Southern District of the American Sokol Organization (ASO).

This is an annual contribution that was allocated by the delegates to the last convention. Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris was invited to attend the anniversary celebration and with the assistance of District III Director Sid Pokladnik presented the contribution to Southern District President Ben Maca of Dallas in the presence of American Sokol Organization President Roy Zitny who had been the featured speaker for the occasion. Bro. Pokladnik had directed the Dallas Concert Orchestra during the entire anniversary celebration and gymnastics performances. Bro. Maca responded with grateful appreciation on behalf of the Southern District and his sentiments were pretty well echoed

by Bro. Zitny. Bro. Morris stated that in the brochure that was printed for the occasion one could see on almost every page the close

The attractive pins were then presented to the honorees by Mr. Morris, Mr. Pokladnik, Lodge No. 25 President Raymond Zapletal and Lodge No. 25 Secretary Kay Lynn Kovar.

Members eligible for the pins were Frank Hornik, Joe Hornik, Joe J. Jansa, Leslie Jarolimek, Leona Jurica, L. S. Kucera, W. J. Kucera, Albina Nesuda, Wilma Nesuda, Charlie Novak, Lillie Novy, Rudolph Ozymy and Gladys R. Willis.

Wilma Nesuda reminisced about 1933 when quite a few young people joined SPJST. Although she and her late husband, Alvin, were newly-

inter-relationship that exists between the Sokol Organization and the SPJST and that a vast majority of one organization are members of the other. He stated that the SPJST had been making these contributions through their conventions dating back to the 20s and 30s.

The 75th Anniversary of Sokol Ennis was attended by approximately 1,000 people. Every seat was filled and there were a large number standing. The efficiency and smoothness of the day's events and program can be attributed to the fine planning on the part of Ennis Sokol officers and members, particularly Ennis Sokol President Larry Laznovsky and Director of Women Sylvia Laznovsky, however, they had the help of a lot of devoted and hard-working Sokol members, too numerous to mention. I was proud to be invited to witness the day's events, which were quite impressive. I particularly, noted the presence of so many young people, those very small and grown young men and women. The Sokol Organization, like the SPJST, is doing its share in building character in our young people and keeping them off the streets and in fruitful and worthwhile endeavors — "A sound mind in a sound body." One example being Johnny and Dolphie Hrabina, our mayor pro tem. Her speech was a very interesting piece of memorabilia of that era.

During the course of the meeting, a very special announcement was made. Sid Pokladnik of Dallas will be the Grand Marshal of the 1983 Polka Festival Parade. Mr. Pokladnik has been prominent in the Czech community for many years. He was recently in Ennis for the 75th Anniversary of the Ennis Sokol where he directed the Dallas Czech Orchestra during the anniversary program. He said that he was honored to have been asked to fill the Grand Marshal position by Polka Festival Chairman Lou Green.
