Lubbock Lodge Hosts District IV Meeting The annual District IV meeting was held in Lubbock, Sunday, April 26, with Lodge No. 157 hosting the event.

President Ernest Kristinek, Jr. convened the meeting at 2 p.m., with Flagbearer Greg Blankenship presenting the colors and leading in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brother Kristinek extended a warm welcome to the attending brothers, sisters, and guests: SL President Nick Morris, District IV Director Stanley Broz and District IV Rest Homes Director Emil Havlak.

A business meeting proceeded with various reports and election of officers for next year. Those serving as District IV officers include: President Laddie Socha, 1st Vice President Ernest Kristinek, Jr., 2nd Vice President James Haisler, Secretary Diana Pelzel, Treasurer Raymond Pavliska, District Youth Counselor Mary Haisler, Assistant DYC Henrietta Pavliska, and Flagbearer Greg Blankenship.

For entertainment Sister Mary Haisler was in charge of an enjoyable youth program.

After the meeting adjourned everyone was treated to a delicious supper which was enjoyed by the large attendance.

Sales Representatives Recognized In District IV

Morris presented Director Broz an award for being top sales in the district, as well as second high salesman in the State of Texas.

In 1980 fourteen sales persons produced a total of $675,000 of insurance sales; from this amount, Brother Stanley Broz achieved $377,000 of sales on the books. When considering the distance these sales persons have to drive in their geographic district, the $675,000 total is still a good amount.

Congratulations to the entire sales force for their accomplishments and may each of you continue your effort in securing members and endeavor to • increase members' policies whenever you are able to.

TODAY'S THOUGHTS Be what your friends think you are; avoid what your enemies say you are; go right ahead and be happy.

Reputation is what you have on arrival. Character is what you have on departure.

The people who get the most kick out of life are those who kick the least. *** Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up, and hurry off as if nothing had happened. *5* The curve of a smile can set a lot of things straight.

Adolescence is when you think you will live forever. Middle age is when you wonder how you have lasted so long.

Some months ago, while watching television, a program was shown (with a commercial included) about how to get rid of smoke odors and also about a smoke "arrester" which, when plugged into an electrical circuit, would draw the smoke from cigars, cigarettes and pipes into it and absorb the odor and purify the air by drawing the smoke through purifying granules.

Recently another one-half hour program showed graphs and statistics showing the hazardous effects of marihuana, hashish, heroin, and other drugs, etc., especially on expectant women.

Now, why does your editor mention this? Our mail delivers much material about all of these detrimental and unhealthy habits and things and much of it is absorbed in our mind.

Here is the thought that has stayed with this writer for many years: We human beings are supposed to be the most advanced of the animal species on earth and, yet, are we?

Or, rather, are we sensible enough to make use of that advanced knowledge? Just consider this: We grow tobacco, subsidize the farmers to grow it, we smoke it and it hurts our health at the same time and then we go to the trouble of inventing some gadget to get rid of the smell and smoke!

Now let us go to this much-used drug called marihuana or "marijuana;" you know, some of our used-to-be empires of ancient times went down in defeat and decay because of drugs; study history and you will realize this to be a fact! Let us take marihuana specifically: one cigarette smoked will dull a person's reflexes by 27 percent; two by 41 percent, that means that you will react to incidents that much slower percentagewise and that is why there are so many auto accidents caused by marihuana smokers. Just consider the percentage chance of an accident if both drivers each had

smoked one cigarette: 54 percent greater! Get it? Now consider what it does to a teenager between the ages of 14 and 21 -- it damages their expanding brain cells, dulls their thinking in school and lessens their ability in athletics and in girls it can cause DEFORMED CHILDREN. Is that what you want? And the bad thing about marihuana is that it makes you have a HIGH feeling at the time and you have NO hangover so you think IT IS SAFE TO USE. You are only kidding yourself! It is your life and body; take care of it! ***

TAKE NOTICE. The XXIII SPJST Convention in June, 1980, held in San Antonio, passed on and adopted a motion that the SL officers and editor would be given two weeks of vacation each year and that our SPJST Society would print only 50 issues of Vestnik each year.

By mutual agreement of the publisher, editor and our Supreme Lodge there will be NO Vestnik issued dated July 1st and August 26th. Please keep this in mind in planning your correspondence! ***

Increasing numbers of families today have two incomes -- but sometimes that can lead to money management problems.

Too often that second income, even if it's a sizeable one, gives a family a false sense of both their financial security and their ability to pay bills, according to Mrs. Kathy Prochaska-Cue, a family economics specialist at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Many two-income families just don't take the time to add up what extra expenses they have because of that second income.

These include transportation costs, more clothes, child care, housekeeping expenses, union or professional society dues, and additional food costs.

The biggest problem I've found in counseling such families is that they have such a large amount of credit available that their money may not stretch far enough to cover their expenditures.

To protect themselves, Mrs. Prochaska-Cue advises dual-income households to develop and use a spending plan, establish separate lines of credit and get adequate life and disability insurance to safeguard their dependents.

Life insurance company holdings of mortgages on 1 to 4 family homes increased again in 1980, reports the American Council of Life Insurance.

The portfolio of 1 to 4 family mortgages held by life companies increased about 11 percent, to $17.4 billion at the end of 1980, the Council said.

Some 159 million persons had Social Security earning credits at the beginning of 1980, including 134 million who had been in the program long enough to qualify for payments at retirement.. v

These facts and figures serve as evidence that our Society continues in its commitment to service basic human needs. Despite the fact that government now plays an everincreasing role in each of our lives, we must continue to offer a very distinctive way to meet various human needs.

The SPJST is a fraternal benefit society rather than just an insurance company. From the SecretaryTreasurer's Department Fraternal Activities Report May 8, 1981 Dear Members: The law requires that a fraternal benefit society must provide insurance benefits for its members and must have an active lodge system. A fraternal benefit society must also commit itself to provide benevolence on a local lodge level.

This report will concern itself with the benevolent function of our Society.

We have just completed a fraternal activities survey of our local lodges in cooperation with the National Fraternal Congress of America. The primary purpose of this survey is to gather facts and figures needed to present a complete picture of fraternal efforts accomplished on the local lodge level. The information from the survey is very important and will be used by the National Fraternal Congress of America and this Society in providing data for legislators and other concerned groups.

We are indeed pleased at the improved participation of our local lodges in this survey. 101 out of 128 local lodges have returned their survey forms covering 1980 local lodge activities.

During 1980 our lodges held 5958 lodge and youth club meetings and socials, and expended the amount of $126,525.02 on fraternal activities.

The survey also provides information that our local lodges disbursed $77,455.64 to benevolent and charitable causes.

Lodge No. 88 News (Delayed) Our dance Friday night, April 17, with the Nashville Express, was hosted by and in charge of Kathy Trefell and her husband, Mike with Francis Spalding taking care of seating the guests, while Mary Schenburn, with Marge Spalding, greeted the guests at the door.

The Saturday night dance with music by Joe Patek was hosted by Gus Gerlich in charge and his wife, Ann with Lillie Spies at the door greeting the guests and also helping Lester Zappe.

Brother Joe Elzner is walking around with a satisfied grin on his face being the great-grand-uncle to Joseph Charles Maiorana; as yet Joe Elzner hasn't had a chance to become a great-grandfather, so the next best thing was to take pride in being a great-grand-uncle to Joseph Charles. To clarify this family tree: the later Brother Stanley Elzner, well-known in our lodge circle, his son's (Sonny Elzner's daughter, Debbie) presented the family with the first great-grandchild to the delight of everyone. Joe and Ann Elzner have three grandchildren and when the time comes, Joe and Ann will be officially great-grandparents.

Brother Jerry Elzner and wife, Millie of Corpus Christi will marry their daughter Marsha to Joseph Frank Tanniello on May 9, 1981 in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and the reception will be held at Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi. After the wedding next day, May 10th, the Elzner clan will hold a meeting to plan their future family reunion; a delicious brunch will be served.

Brother David Miculka is recuperating at the home of his father, Ed Miculka and wife, Ellen; both are taking good care of David after his two weeks' stay in Heights Hospital where he was confined for five days in intensive care and seven days in a hospital bed. Now, he is at home with loving care. Get well and more power to you, David!

Sister Estelle Kelly underwent foot surgery and was hobbling along, but last Thursday, at social night, she was back at her table working as usual and wearing a pair of good looking silver slippers. I am sure she will make it now.

Brother John Anthony Krpec, nicknamed "Tony" for short, is with our police force for 13 years as a cruising motorcycle officer. March 18 he was escorting Mrs. Sedat of Egypt to the Houston Medical Center; he was on the way coming back to the station to escort a funeral procession when, on University Center and South Main, an unspecified lefthand turn was made by a female driver, and Ton , to avoid her, fell off his motorcycle and was knocked unconscious sliding 33 feet on the concrete while his new motorcycle was demolished by the careless driver, without a driver's license. Tony was very fortunate and very lucky to emerge with only painful bruises and stitches on his arms and a sore body; he is back at work, again, and let's hope it won't happen again. His mother, Hilda Krpec and grandmother, Anna Svestka with wife, Caroline experienced a scare of their lives.

Now for some good news: Jimmie Hitchcock, stepson of Charles Krpec (son of Hilda Krpec and a student at Lamar High School FFA) raised a grand Champion Steer and won first prize, and the steer was auctioned off for $8,100 which is the highest ever paid before in Harris County and the Houston Independent School District. Congratulations!

Two lucky young guys of Corpus Christi (Butch and Chip. Simmons) grandsons of Sister Hilda Krpec, winged in to Houston before Easter to spend the holidays and extended their stay until their parents, Gene and Marian Simmons, will drive to Houston to take them home. Of course, the other pair of grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Simmons, also enjoyed the two boys.

The Krpec family had quite a bad time, but also happy moments. Oh! yes, Sister Laura Belle Warnasch, a member on our Entertainment Committee and serving as secretary on that committee, is also the secretary, for over 25 years, to Mr. D. E. Simmons. What a coincidence!

May has five Saturdays and each with a good orchestra to play for each Saturday. You can take your choice: May 2 was Lee Roy Matocha; May 9 were Vrazels; May 16 were Texas Dutchmen; May 23 — Knights of Dixie; and the last Saturday, May 30 — Ray Jurecka. Come out and have a good time!

Remember the Birthday Club always has a card party on the first Wednesday and a regular meeting with a luncheon on the second Wednesda'y of the month; you may play your favorite games and enjoy a delicious lunch each time.

At the last monthly meeting we had a covered dish buffet before the meeting at 6:15 p.m. and everyone enjoyed it.

John and Mary Kosut experienced a very bad time having their son, Larry injured while working on his car; the battery exploded in his face and badly burned his eyes. Larry has regained sight in his right eye, his doctor gave him hope for the other eye, but it will be weeks before he will regain complete clear vision. Best wishes, Larry, for your complete recovery.

Sister Beverly H. Burford died Wednesday, May 6, 1981, at the age of 62 years after a lengthy serious illness. During her life, Beverly was a very active person; she was Past Matron of Northside Chapter 651, Past Mother advisor of Faith Assembly No. 109, Order of the Rainbow Girls, Past Member of O.P.E.I.U. No. 129 and a member of Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 for many years. Survivors are daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Wren; son, William H. Burford, Jr.; and granddaughter, Angela Kay Wren, all of Houston, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Friday, May 8, at Heights Funeral Chapel with Rev. Murray Powell officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery. While in good health Beverly and son, William, were faithful members of Lodge No 88. May she rest in peace and sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

Cottonwood Lodge No. 6 Sets May 31 For Monthly Meeting Dear Readers, President Dobecka opened the meeting Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m. by having Karen and Lanette Hykel recite the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Pledge.

Secretary Barbara Hykel reported all officers present.

Brother Eddie Hykel reported 23 members present and one guest, Steve Deitrich.

President Dobecka called on Secretary Barbara Hykel to read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read. Correspondence was from the American Sokol Organization.

Treasurer Georgia Wachsmann and Financial Secretary George Straten gave their reports.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth members will have their Rest Home program May 13th. She thanked all the youth members for the Easter program and also to those who helped and donated items for Easter. Practices for YAD will be every Friday at 8 p.m. Craft cards and point sheets all need to be finished by May 25th. The youngsters had a Mother's Day program, card contest and crazy hat contest. Darrell ,Uptrnor brought cake.

4/V ESTNiK -- Wednesday, May 20, 1981 In the Board of Trustees' report Chairman George Straten reported on further committees for the annual lodge picnic. It was voted on again to participate in Westfest. A committee consisting of Brothers George Straten, Johnny Krizan and Robert Dobecka were selected to purchase a lawnmower for the lodge premises.

A new member, juvenile James Hromadka, Jr., was accepted into the lodge. He is the son of James and Charlotte Hromadka.

Posters for the lodge picnic are to be printed soon. It was voted on to start holding the meetings at 3 p.m., instead of 2:30 p.m. The next meeting will be May 31st, and Board of Trustees' meeting will be held Friday, May 29th.

The $10 progressive door prize was Debbie Ivy; the $1 progressive door prize was Anton Kaluza; and the $2 door prize was George Straten.

President Dobecka adjourned the meeting until Sunday, May 31st.

No. 47, Seaton Meeting June 7th Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, President Alfred Klusacek called our meeting to order Monday, May 4, with Flagbearers David Pechai and Nora Skrabanek in the absence of Gene Skrabanek, leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed brother, L. J. Motl. May he rest in eternal peace and his memory live among us forever.

The first thing on the agenda at this meeting was honoring our Youth Club graduates by Youth Leader Shirley Patterson giving each graduate, a plaque and President Klusacek a monetary gift.

The honorees this year were Beth Vanicek and Michelle Dokupil who are graduating from Temple High School and Jodie Zavodny and Diane Skrabanek from Rogers High School. Frankie Klinkovsky then delivered a very encouraging speech to the graduates of 1981. This was followed with a prayer for the graduates; again, congratulations Tepera and Evelyn Talasek. We wel starting out in a new life -something they have been looking forward to and working towards this goal for 18 years. We wish all of them good luck and best wishes in whatever they undertake in the future.

President Klusacek then called on Secretary Dolores Skrabanek for the roll call of officers, Sales Reps, reading of minutes, mortuary receipt and correspondence. A thank you note from the L. J. Motl family for the floral wreath was read and a donation in the memory of Mr. Motl from Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Doskocil and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Doskocil and Janell; also a thank you note from Shana Patterson was read.

All officers and chairpersons gave satisfactory reports. The Board minutes were read by Alfred L. Klusacek, board secretary. Lillian Kosarek reported on the choral group float in the absence of Dorothy Morris. The float won a Grand Prize Ribbon in the Rogers Centennial Parade! Those of you who missed seeing the float in Rogers can see it in Cameron during their Folk Fete Parade June 13. We will be there; also at Temple's Centennial Celebration Parade June 27.

Woodrow Marek gave a report for the Planning Committee (in the absence of Frank Maruna, chairman). The storage building is going up fast and the committee was given the go ahead to complete the building inside with bathroom and kitchen facilities.

Shirley Patterson reported that Elgin SPJST lodge sent an invitation to the Youth Club for their May Fete. Roderick Hutka and Missy Coufal were elected to represent Lodge No. 47.

We had two birthdays in May: Alfred Klusacek and Ann Koon. One anniversary: Mr. and Mrs. George Pavelka were acknowledged. Congratulations to all of you.

Door prizes were won by Anna Chupik and Jerry Pechal.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, June 7 at 2 p.m. This will be followed by a covered dish supper in honor of Mother's and Father's Day. We'll, see you all then!

Lodge Makes Final Plans For Annual Picnic Holland

Dear Members and Friends: We had a good attendance at our Sunday, May 3rd meeting. President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

All officers were present except Secretary Alvin Martinets who is still a patient in the VA Hospital in Temple.

The Pledge to the U.S. Flag was recited by all members present.

The minutes from the April meeting were read by Treasurer Glen Latham, due to the absence of Secretary Martinets. They were approved as read.

President Bohac thanked all for the expression of sympathy cards, and mass donations for the passing

of his parents.

A standing ovation was given to Glen Latham for filling in the positions of Recording Secretary Alvin Martinets who is ill, and the passing away of our Financial Secretary Clifton Martinets.

The May 31st picnic was further discussed, it was decided to have good beef barbecue sandwiches for $1.25 and those Holland SPJST hamburgers, and other things to eat.

These food items will be available beginning at 12 noon until closing time. There will be a cake walk and other forms of entertainment from 4 to 9 p.m.; Joe Patek and his Orchestra will entertain you for your dancing pleasure. We extend a cordial invitation to all the SPJST members and friends to come and spend the evening with us, we will try to show you a nice time.

At our meeting we voted to sponsor a little league ball club to buy uniforms with the letters of SPJST No. 80 on the back of the uniforms; the cost will be about $200.

The crops in this area are looking very good. The big wheat acreage is about ready to be harvested.

June 14th Meeting Hill Country Lodge Set for Ft. Worth No. 185, Lodge No. 92 New Braunfels News Dear Members and Friends: We finally received some muchneeded rain but could have done without the hail. Many of our members had roof damage, windows broken and everything in their gardens beat up. There will be a lot of replanting in many gardens. It was one of the worst hail storms probably to ever hit the Fort Worth area. Hopefully there will not be anything like it for many years to come, but that is something we do not have any control over.

We had a good turnout at our last meeting and all business was conducted very capably by our President Albert Kubala.

Brother Al Svacek was back with us after his open-heart surgery and we were glad to see him and hope he continues doing fine. Sister Teresa Dearing had dental surgery. Lillie McMillen had eye surgery. Mary Hubenak was in St. Joseph's Hospital for tests and treatment.

Doris Hawrylak had a heart attack and is now at home. Brother Steve Matusevich was in St. Joseph Hospital for tests and treatment.

We hope all of our sick members are fine and can be with us at our meetings before long.

Sympathy cards were sent to the family of Richard F. Hubenak, Jr. who passed away in Montgomery, Texas, April 13; and the family of Brother Mealius Skillern who passed away April 21.

Youth Leader Gladys Jasek informed us of the many activities her group was involved in. Douglas and Noreen Jasek were elected vice president and reporter respectively for the District VII youth group.

Ernest and family went to Robstown.

We missed the Hrabals; they had company and it was one of the few times they missed a meeting.

Theresa Haag is getting close to the happy event, which will add a new family member to the Haag household. April and Chris are growing and will be able to help mother with the new baby.

Did you ever catch 100 fish at one outing?? That is what Brother Orsag did at his special hideaway at the river. I wonder what his secret is?

We hope to see ya'll at the Spring Fling, which will be held May 17th, beginning at 2 p.m. at Fay-Lynn's grandfather's ranch on the Guadalupe River. Bring your fishing rods! Everyone had such a good time at Mr. Meckl's place so that we shall repeat it this time.

It is interesting to hear all the men bragging what good cooks they are I wish my husband would do that for, me at home. Mr. Parker has, by the way, just returned from his business trip to Ireland and France, with "a quick stopover at Hlohovec,

The Sokol Exhibition this afternoon was well-attended and enjoyed by all. Guests from Wichita Falls were Lillian Pastusek Riley and John and Ann Otto to see their great niece and nephew perform; they are our members Matt and Stacie Brumbow.

Benny and I will be leaving in the morning for Megargel to spend a few days with his brother, Jerome Pavlicek who is in an Olney, Texas hospital with a broken hip.

Quite a few of our members received quite a bit of damage from the Friday night storm. It was pretty scarey.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, June 14, at 3 p.m.

Letter from Mid-Cities Lodge No. 183

News

Dear Members: A Board of Trustees' meeting was held at the lodge hall Tuesday night, with President B. J. Hlavaty presiding.

Business discussed included finances, dances, cleanup and social games.

It was, decided and approved to change the Sunday afternoon social games to Tuesday night, at least through the summer months. Game nights will now be held on Tuesdays and Thursday, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Public is welcome.

Tragedy struck our family on May 6. Our 21-year-old son, Gary Wayne Hlavaty was found shot to death.

His death is still being investigated by the Arlington Police. Services were held May 8.

Gary was an active member of Lodge No. 183, serving as bartender, kitchen worker and various jobs in the lodge.

We are very saddened and mourn his death. We ask that you remember him in your prayers.

(Sister Matilda Hanus attended some of our earlier practices but, of late, was ill and in the hospital. She has since been recuperating and is at home.

Brother Otto, while attending to Matilda and work, also made time to paint three large signs for the float.

They were very beautiful and added to the "flavor" of the theme.)

It is good to know that, at any given time, a majority of the members will attend and support what we have voted and planned for.

A mutual appreciation gives way to a deeper spirit of cooperation, unity, comraderie, and the satisfaction that we are "keeping on."

Significant to this continuing were two functions — the Buckholts Senior Citizens Benefit April 10 and the Rogers Centennial Celebration, April 25. Twenty-three members were on stage at Buckholts, and then enjoyed the entertainment by local "virtuosi" — singers, dancers and musicians. The Seaton Brass Band rendered many audience — favorite selections before the program. A finale with the posting of colors by the Marines and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" was arranged by Nick Morris, band director. Mrs. Roxanne Jordon was soloist, and Max McClaren (both of Cameron) provided background support on his console organ. Refreshments by the Senior Citizens were served to all in attendance. It was our joy and pleasure to have been there.

Having been in planning, preparation and building stages for four months, the float for Rogers' parade, titled "Our Czech Heritage — Then and Now," won the Grand Prize ribbon and $50. Skirted with handpleated burlap, it depicted our ancestors' home and farm life. Onehalf recreated a typical home with a woodburning cookstove, a sausagemaking machine, woman in rocking chair with embroiderie and "zeli" being shredded and "slapani."

The farm and yard scene had soap being made as well as clothes being scrubbed on a washboard. There was a corn sheller at work and a (horse-drawn) one-row plow and (horse-drawn) one-row planter — the kind to walk behind. And of course, beer was "being capped" with an old-fashioned capper. Who rode on the float wore period or centennial clothes. A full pick-up load of singers wore our club blue/white and sang to accordion music. Thirty members took part in this special event and two "extras," little neighbors of Linda and Daniel Wilde who walked with fishing poles.

The ribbon and money were surely appreciated but could not surpass the fun, pride and anticipation we all felt during the making of the float and at the parade. It was a group endeavor; the satisfaction is

Fourth Annual Czech Festival In Victoria The 4th annual Czech Festival has been set for Sunday, July 12, 1981 beginning at 11 a.m.

These festivities will be held at the Community Center, 2905 East North Street in Victoria. Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. consisting of sausage and trimmings.

In addition to the festivities, there will be a kolache booth opened throughout the afternoon, plus an auction, country store and cake walk. Barbecue sandwiches will be sold in the afternoon and the Beer Garden will be open.

Additional live entertainment will be for everyone throughout the day

Dallas Circle of Czech Women The Circle met on a beautiful, sunny day May 7. Those of you who missed the meeting, missed a "treat". Sister A. Zvolanek showed interesting slides of Czechoslovakia.

We appreciate everyone who took part in the Dallas International Bazaar, which was sponsored by The Dallas Central Business District Association.

Sister A. Hucek visited her Sister in LaGrange, Texas last month and, while there, a tornado came and took

the roof off her sister's house while they were in it. Don't you know that was a frightening experience. We had damaging winds and hailstones in our area last Friday evening.

There was extensive damage done in Ft. 4 Worth, Grand Prairie, Arlington, and Southwest Dallas.

I'm sure many gardens were totally destroyed and that's a shame after so much hard labor. Next month I will not be at the meeting, so my faithful assistant, Mary Sebestik will act as reporter, for which I am very grateful. Tom and I will be on a tour to Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti. I'll be thinking of all of you while in the country "down under".

Dramatic Club `illahol' Houston To Perform At the invitation of the American Czech Culture Society of Dallas, Dramatic Club of Lodge 88, Houston will repeat the performance of "Neni panstvo jako panstvo" at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas Sunday, June 7,1981 at 2 p.m. `Hlahor performed this Czech comedy at Lodge 88, Houston last November where it was so wellreceived that we are delighted to be able to repeat the play for our brothers and sisters and guests in the Dallas area.

All of the actors and actresses (except for two) were born in Czechoslovakia and are happy to be able to promote the Czech language.

Softball Team Lodge No. 84, Dallas Report SPJST

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Wednesday night, May 6, our game was rained out, therefore, it will be played at a later date as a make-up game.

Tuesday night, May 12, we played Charlie's team and we lost another close baligame by a score of 5 to 3. It was a real good ballgame; the difference was in hitting, they got their hits and we didn't. They had 10 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher.

Offensively, we were rather weak on this particular night: Don Jarma had a double and Danny Yates had a single. You have to hit to win and I feel we will start real soon.

Our next games are Wednesday night, May 20 at 9:10 p.m. at Kiest No 1; Wednesday night, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Kiest No 1; and Tuesday night, June 2 at Samuel Diamond No 1 at 6:30 p.m. Do come out and see the team play if you can.

FEATURES Continuing Progress At The Home Office

by Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris Another phase of updating and modernizing our Home Office is continuing in the realm of computeriza tion of Home Office records. You will recall that a few weeks ago Bro. Gebala and I had an announcement in the Vestnik that we had received four CRTs (Cathode Ray Terminals) at the Home Office on March 18th. In that announcement we stated that other component parts of the IBM System 34 would be arriving after that.

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) arrived in the Home Office on April 14th, along with a 650 LPM (Line-Per-Minute) Printer. These arrived during the week of the Supreme Lodge meeting and one of the accompanying pictures shows members of the Supreme Lodge gathered for their initial view of the entire system. The next thing to arrive will be our software programs and data from USSI (United Systems & Software Inc.) of Orlando, Florida. The timing of this will be keyed to the progress of the coding of the data by Home Officer personnel. It must be stated that all Home Office personnel have responded very positively in the first stages of this project, although none of them had had any previous experience or association with a computer program.

Up to this time, all of the agreements and contracts entered into with IBM and USSI have been, fulfilled to the maximum without any "hitches". The relationship es tablished between the Home Office/ SPJST and these two firms has been nothing short of superb.

I state all of this because from time to time it is evident that some of our members, especially those fairly new to the SPJST, do not fully understand how our Home Office operates. Perhaps we here in the Home Office haven't done our PR work well, however, we are, and always have been, available to answer any questions pertaining to how certain phases of our Society operate. This was also brought out in our recent youth leaders' weekend retreat — that some of our youth leaders could perform more efficiently if they knew a little bit more about our SPJST Society as a

SIGN OF THE TIMES. I took the occasion of the recent District IV meeting in Lubbock to fly instead of driving. The cost of the trip was a lesson in economics, price of air fare vs. automobile, and inflation in general. I drove to Austin — about a 1-hour drive — caught a plane for Lubbock via Love Field in Dallas.

The plane left and arrived right on schedule for the entire trip. Thank you, Southwest Airlines! Total

round trip fare: $90.00! Had I driven the approximately 720 miles (round trip) at the current mileage allowance of 344 a mile, travel expenses alone would have come to $244.80. Moreover, the trip would have taken about six hours. I would have preferred to spend the night before returning (lodging costs), and I would have been completely "bushed" after a drive like that My last gasoline purchase here in Temple was at the rate of $1.34 a gallon for unleaded and I heafd that in other cities not far from Temple it costs $1.43 a gallon. Moral: For longer hauls it's far more economical to fly than to drive.

WEST — Combine Czechoslovakian spice with Texas drawl and you come up with Raymond Nemecek, a peppery sausage-maker who grinds away the hours in a white, brick building as thick as the smell of smoke.

There are days when the line for sausage curls around the Nemecek Brothers plant, founded in 1896 by Raymond's father, Edward. The building stands on the original site, but the real monument to Edward Nemecek's culinary heritage is the work of Raymond Nemecek and his two brothers.

The Nemecek brothers — Raymond, 69, John, 76, and Edward Jr., 64 -make bacon, hot dogs, ring bologna and sausage with old-world dedication and Texas flair. Cattle are slaughtered on the premises.

Bacon is cured in brine for three weeks. There are no fillers in the bologna. Meat is redolent with the taste of smoke and spice.

And the recipes? Most are Czechoslovakian, although the brothers have made some concessions to Texans in the form of a sausage called "hot chubbies."

"They're so damn hot," Raymond said, "they'll curl your hair for you."

So, meet Raymond Nemecek, a man with a penchant for steer horns, fat cigars, making sausage and finding friends. And welcome to West, a town 15 miles north of Waco, population 2,604, its people mostly descendants of Czechoslovakian settlers who came to Texas in the late 1800s.

Today, West is an off-the-road tourist area known for fine Czech pastry called kolaches, a yearly festival called the Westfest, fat cattle and Nemecek Brothers sausage.

Wednesday, May 20, 1981 -- VE STNili/9 "Dad always told us that there would be some years when profits are gonna be marginal, but never let your quality go down," Nemecek said "I would sooner take a whipping than that."

Witness Nemecek's fervent dedication to the lowly bologna. Once thought of as second-class meat, ring bologna has been evolved into a gourmet item by the Nemeceks.

"It's our most popular seller," Raymond said, "because many sausage-makers make sausage and bologna to sell and not to eat."

They make them full of fillers and coloring. We refuse to do that.

We make ours out of strictly nothing but bull meat, pork and spices.

When you make bologna and sausage to eat, it sells itself."

Customers tasting Nemecek's bologna for the first time have asked him what they're eating. "They can't' believe that's what bologna is supposed to taste like," he said Then there are the spices, which give Czechoslovakian sausage its character. Secrets? Raymond tells all: "Paprika, nutmeg, ginger, coriander, caraway. Only the freshest.'

If Nemecek sounds like a commercial for himself, consider that the brothers do little advertising.

They don't need to. On weekends, customers come to Nemecek Brothers from Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco and Austin. The Nemeceks supervise everything from cow to counter. They buy only grain fed beef. And because there are no middlemen, prices generally are a bit lower than at the supermarket.

Consequently, it is never quiet at Nemecek's, and a recent day was typical. The butchers were busy packaging bacon and bologna, the counter traffic was continuous and a visitor with a briefcase wanted to see Raymond.

"If he's a salesman, tell him to wait," Raymond said. An hour later, the salesman was still waiting, and Nemecek was leaving to buy cattle at the Thursday livestock auction.

"The average run of cattle won't do for our sausage," Nemecek said. But he did give the salesman a minute before he left.

Ten minutes later, he was on a boardwalk above hundreds of cattle, a cigar in his mouth. "There's a Hereford bull. He's an old one," Nemecek said. "I don't want him at any price. What we want are younger animals for our sausage."

"When my father opened his business here, this place was a onehorse town," Nemecek said. "He was a 19-year-old immigrant who came here because he had a sister living in Waco. He had gone to sausagemaking school in Czechoslovakia, and he opened up here on Easter Sunday morning 1896."

The place has steer horns on the walls — Nemecek collects them — and he has a mounted steer head as well. "That was originally a Mexican dogging steer, but he got too fat and big."

They also come to hear a joke or two from Nemecek, and to gander at the degree on the wall from an old Czechoslovakian sausage-making school. YAD consists of devotion, hard work, and long hours of preparation before that final hour arrives.

From the State Youth Director Dear Youth Leaders: The youth year (May 31st) is quickly coming to an end. There are only two weeks before June 1. This means that points need to be counted and complete before the district YAD's because of the checks that have to be issued here. I am asking that each of you turn in your point sheets at soon as the youth year ends and those having YAD's on June 7 and June 14 should have your point sheets in my office no later than June 3 in order to have your checks ready. (District IV and District III) Many of you have kept your quarterly reports up to date but a few have failed to show, any points for your lodge. If, for some reason, you have not kept points for your youth club then this explains why, but if you have failed to record these points on the quarterly report form, please send this information to me as soon as you have completed counting the points. If theite is a question, check the last quarterly report in which you gave me a figure.

COTTONWOOD YL REPORTS ON SEVERAL ACTIVITIES The youth club meeting of Cottonwood Lodge No. 6 was held May 3, with a good attendance and we had one visitor, Penny Stoval. Come back and visit us, again!

April 17, the club members did real good on their bake sale; they also sold Stanley products.

Youth Achievement Day (YAD) is around the corner. The youth club started practicing talent and I need the craft and point sheets by May 22, so I can send all the entry cards to District III counselor and point sheets to our State Youth Director Jann Thomas.

April 26, members in four cars went to District III meeting at Lodge No. 84 in Dallas. It was a nice meeting and we had a good meal.

Those who attended were: Brother and Sister Robert Dobecka and family, Brother and Sister Aubrey Uptmor and family, Brother and Sister Edward Hykel and family, Brother Johnnie Krizan, Sister Ruth Krizan and Willie Mae Schuetz.

Our youngsters presented a short Mother's Day program, had a crazy hat contest plus Mother's Day card contest after the mother lodge meeting, May 3.

A Graduation Party is planned for May 31st. Those graduating from West High School are: Denaria Perez, Eddie Hykel, and David Dobecka from Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) in Waco. Congratulations to all three of you.

EL CAMPO YL REPORTS ON PRODUCTIVE CLUB MEETING Dear Readers, El Campo Lodge No. 50 Youth Club met May 5, 1981, at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.

The meeting was opened by Vice President Kim Vanek. Secretary Joseph Bartos read the minutes.

Treasurer Jackie Marek gave the treasurer's report and collected dues.

Mrs. Janet Marek, District VI youth counselor, was our special guest. The youth members presented her with a corsage.

We had election of officers. They are: President Lori Henderson, Vice President Michael Marek, Secretary Tammy Dybala, Treasurer Melissa Brandt and Parliamentarian Darren Dybala.

For different committee those elected were: Jackie Marek and Kim Vanek, scrapbook; Jodi Henderson and Pamela Brandt, refreshments; Veronica Bartos and Joseph Bartos, games.

We discussed changing our meetings to Wednesdays for the summer. We had one youth visitor Leslie Wallace.

Plans were made for our summer outing that is to be held with our June meeting.

Dear Friends, Some activities we had during April were: The youth leaders went to Val Verde for a leaders' retreat April 3 through 5.

April 11, the youth club went on a movie trip. They donated cookies to be taken to the rest home. The District VII sales representatives had a banquet in Beeville.

All members were invited to attend an Easter Sunrise Service on the Bayfront April 19.

April 25 was the date of our last meeting, which followed with an initiation of all new members.

A bill which will require mandatory automobile liability insurance was recently approved by the House of Representatives by a vote of 128-15. Representative Gene Green, Houston, sponsored the bill now under deliberation by the Senate and anticipates an increase in the number of insured motorists, Opponents of the bill argued that Texas motorists can purchase uninsured motorist coverage and claim that passage of the bill will raise insurance rates.

Passage of the bill by the Senate will require Texas drivers to carry liability insurance of $5,000 for property damage and $10,000 for bodily injury. Proof of such coverage would be required to be shown to police officers on demand. Violations of the new law would be classified as a Class C misdemeanor and would carry a minimum fine of $75 for the first offense and up to $1000 plus one year in jail for subsequent violations.

The accusative case is the case of the direct object of transitive verbs.

It tells what person or object is directly affected by the action of the verb. It answers the questions: Whom? What?

The masculine inanimate and, neuter hard nouns have the same form in the accusative as in the nominative.

The feminine nouns change the ending "a" to "u": Ex.: Masc. Inanimate Fem. Nominative: kabat kniha Accusative: kabat knihu
