What’s So Special About the Chesapeake? Everything.

Irecently had the opportunity to travel to St. George Island on the Florida Panhandle’s Gulf Coast to experience island living, world-class fishing, and delicious seafood. This was a press trip, so I met writers from around the country. We naturally got to talking about where everyone was from, and I of course wasted no time extolling the wonders of the Chesapeake Bay. Because apart from one of our hosts, Sheila, who used to live in Maryland, no one had ever been to the Chesapeake.

Sheila and I waxed poetic about saltwater taffy on the Ocean City boardwalk, the wonderful towns dotting the Eastern Shore (her favorite was Easton), and of course, Maryland crab cakes.

The more I could share with individuals from around the country, and especially land-locked states, it made me appreciate my home state even more. Maryland is often known as “America in Miniature” thanks to the wide range of things to see and do, from the beaches on the East Coast to the low marshlands of the Chesapeake Bay, rolling hills in the Piedmont region, and mountains in the western region of the state.

We have quaint waterfront towns with charming main streets, a thriving maritime and commercial fishing industry,

recreational fishing options aplenty, world class seafood, and coolest of all, the largest estuary in the United States.

I met one couple who were planning a visit to Maryland specifically to travel the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Scenic Byway, and another traveling to our region for the first time to visit the nation’s capital. We have so much history here, and so many opportunities to get out and explore, and we should never take that for granted.

So as much as I loved my week of living on island time, I was happy to return to my home waters (stay tuned for a destination feature coming soon all about St. George Island!). The boating season has officially begun in earnest on the Bay, and I can’t wait to get out there and make the most of it. We have a ton of great events coming up, including the Cambridge Classic Powerboat Regatta (May 18-19), the Blue Angles flyover in Annapolis (May 20-21; one of the most popular raftup events of the year), and the Antique and Classic Boat Festival and Coastal Arts Fair (Father’s Day Weekend in St. Michaels), among others. You can find more in our calendar on page 29 and at proptalk.com/calendar

This month we have a feature on what to see and do in Cambridge, MD (begin-

ning on page 33); watersports ideas for the whole family (page 36); and on the safety and environmentally conscious side, we have: an article on the challenges and requirements for cruising safely at night (page 40), information on how boaters can participate in citizen science with various organizations around the Bay (page 42), and tips for preventing fuel spills courtesy of BoatUS (page 44).

You’ll also find our first printed Dock Bar Guide of the year beginning on page 53. Our printed guide will run through September, and you can find our online guide with an interactive dock bar map at proptalk.com/dock-bars. We started this guide as a way for readers to explore the Bay and support local businesses, but always be sure to do so safely—always bring along a designated skipper, whether visiting by boat or land yacht. As the summer progresses, we’d love for you to share your favorite dock bars with us! Just email me at kaylie@proptalk.com

As always, we’re here to help you have the best summer possible on the Chesapeake. Feel free to reach out anytime with your story ideas, photos, questions, or comments. We hope to see you out there enjoying this wonderful estuary that we call home.

With the tragedy of the Key Bridge collapse still fresh in everyone’s minds, we wanted to share this special photo by Paul Denbow. He says, “Attached is a photo I took looking from our deck at the Key bridge. Our home off Bullneck Creek afforded us a view of the bridge every day, and when sunset came, it appeared the bridge was glowing. Its collapse has surely changed our skyline.”

If you would like to share your favorite photos of the Key Bridge, I encourage you to email me at kaylie@proptalk.com.

navigating peace of mind

Unpredictable waters

THE IMPORTANCE OF BOAT INSURANCE

Embarking on the open water is an exhilarating experience, lled with the promise of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a weekend cruiser, safeguarding your vessel with proper insurance is not just a choice—it’s a necessity. Explore the reasons why every boat owner should prioritize boat insurance for a worry-free voyage.

Navigational exibility

The open water can be unpredictable, with unexpected storms, collisions, or other potential accidents. Boat insurance can give you nancial protection if there is damage to your vessel, providing coverage for repairs or replacement.

Damage and injury

Accidents on the water can result in damage to other boats, docks, or even injuries to passengers. Boat insurance offers liability coverage, which can pay for damages or injuries you’re liable for while boating, up to speci ed limits, and lawsuit costs if you’re sued. This includes damage you cause to another watercraft or if someone on or near your boat is injured and you’re found to be legally responsible.

Theft and vandalism

Unfortunately, boat theft and vandalism are realities that boat owners face. Boat insurance has comprehensive and collision coverage that can protect you against events outside of your control, including theft and vandalism.

Incurred medical payments

Accidents on the water may lead to injuries for you or your passengers. Boat insurance offers a range of optional medical payments coverage limits, helping to cover medical expenses if you are in an accident or someone is hurt on your boat, regardless of fault.

Peace of mind for nancing

If you nanced the purchase of your boat, most lenders require insurance coverage to protect their investment. Having boat insurance not only ful lls these requirements but also gives you peace of mind knowing that your nancial interests are safeguarded.

Some water municipalities and marinas may require proof of insurance for docking or accessing certain areas. Boat insurance allows you the exibility to explore different destinations without worrying about entry restrictions.

Emergency towing and assistance

Progressive boat insurance can include optional Sign & Glide® On-Water Towing coverage. If your boat is disabled or breaks down on the water, Sign & Glide® pays for on-water towing, jump starts, soft un-groundings, and fuel delivery.

Wreckage removal

If your boat sinks, Progressive boat insurance will cover the cost of removing your boat from the water (if removal is legally required).

Investing in boat insurance is not just about protecting a valuable asset; it’s about safeguarding the memories, experiences, and joy that come with your on-water adventures. Don’t let unforeseen circumstances disrupt your journey—navigate with con dence, knowing that Progressive boat insurance has you covered. Ensure a smooth and worry-free voyage, because when it comes to your boat, peace of mind is the ultimate luxury.

PropTalk’s September Cover Contest

PropTalk’s annual cover contest has officially begun! While we normally announce the winner in our August issue, this year, we are extending the contest to give you even more time to get out on the water and get that winning shot.

Any and all powerboating on the Chesapeake Bay shots can be entered. So that means shiny powerboats, boat dogs, watersports, powerboat racing, and anything in between as long as a powerboat is in the picture. We especially love photos of smiling boaters, like our cover photo this month!

Here’s how it works:

• Visit proptalk.com/ covercontest and follow the instructions on the page to enter your photo by July 25

• Vertical photos work best, with room for our header and cover lines.

• Only high-resolution (i.e. not blurry) photos will be considered for the cover.

• If a child is pictured, make sure he or she is wearing a lifejacket (properly), or we won’t consider it for the cover.

• This is a powerboating magazine so while we love sailboats and paddlecraft, a powerboat must be clearly visible in the photo to be considered for the cover.

• We are also a Chesapeake Baybased magazine, so make sure those photos were taken on the Bay.

• Once the submission period has ended, our graphic design team will disqualify any photos that do not meet our submission and printing requirements (any images that are too low of a resolution, are blurry or too dark, if a child was pictured without a lifejacket, if there is no powerboat in the photo, and if there was not enough room in the image for our PropTalk header, footer, and cover lines). We will then let you vote for the winning cover!

In Annapolis, We’ve Got the Blues!

You know it’s summer when the Blue Angels roar into Annapolis in honor of U.S. Naval Academy Commissioning Week, the one before Memorial Day Weekend. The flight rehearsal takes place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, and the official show unfolds at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21. Spectator boats should aim to anchor by 11 a.m. when the jets arrive and circle.

This year marks the 78th year of the Blue Angels, so named for a wellknown and now-defunct nightclub in New York City. Chosen before a New York air show in 1946, the name stuck.

To become part of this top squadron, an applicant “must be a career-oriented, carrier-qualified, active-duty Navy or Marine Corps pilot.” Applicants visit the squadron at scheduled show sites early in the show season to observe the team

firsthand. Finalists are selected midseason and interviewed at the Blue Angels’ squadron in Pensacola, FL.

The new demonstration pilots and support officers are selected by unanimous vote. The Chief of Naval Air Training selects the Flight Leader/Commanding Officer. Officers on the team generally serve two to three years, while the enlisted personnel serve three to four years. Each member returns to the fleet after completing a tour with the Blue Angels.

Of the 158 active-duty sailors and marines serving on the team, 24 are women.

According to the official website, the Blue Angels showcase “the pride and professionalism of the United

States Navy and Marine Corps. We are thrilled to perform demonstrations across the country, sharing our Navy and Marine Corps experiences with our fellow Americans, bringing Naval aviation to communities across the country that may not have a large military presence.

“Our goal for 2024 is to continue to inspire young men and women, not just to pursue a career in Naval aviation or the military, but to excel in all areas of their lives… Each performance provides the American public an opportunity to view the incredible capabilities of our service members serving aboard every ship, squadron, and unit in the United States Navy and Marine Corps.”

Tackle Loaner Program

Did you know you could borrow a fishing rod in Maryland?

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has made fishing equipment available to borrow for free at multiple sites across the state. Maryland’s Tackle Loaner Program is available to individuals, families, or to groups, depending on the site.

This free program aims to encourage novice anglers and their families to continue to develop their angling skills in the Maryland outdoors. The department welcomes all ages and families that may be camping, hiking, or using parks for other outdoor recreational activities to borrow equipment too. The goal is to make recreational fishing as easy and accessible as possible for anyone wanting to enjoy the sport.

You will need your own bait, but basic spincast reel and rod setups with bobber, split shot sinker, swivel, and circle hook are available.

Here’s how it works:

• Find a site near you. Loaning sites include public libraries, state parks, nature centers, and local parks.

• Check out your loaned gear at the selected site. Individual sites may have different check-out policies; please communicate with the site to make sure you are following proper procedure.

• Go fishing!!

• Return gear to the site on the agreedupon date (some can be loaned for multiple days at a time). Consider calling ahead to check that gear is available, as some sites are busier than others.

Be sure to read up on Maryland fishing licensing rules on the MD DNR website. Individuals under the age of 16 are not required to obtain a license to fish. For a list of loaner sites around the state,

visit dnr.maryland.gov and type ‘tackle loaner program’ into the search bar. Some sites, such as public libraries, allow you to reserve a fishing rod online. The Westminster branch of the Carroll County Public Library and several of the Anne Arundel County public libraries allow you to place a hold within the library catalog. Happy fishing!

Along one of the Northern Neck’s beautiful stretches of shoreline on the Corrotoman River you will find Yankee Point Marina, which boasts more than 100 slips, a full-service boatyard, two restaurants, a pool, and more. Owned by Kara and Todd Patterson, Yankee Point is a family-friendly place that welcomes annual slip holders as well as transient boaters.

Since taking ownership two years ago, the Pattersons have made numerous improvements and upgrades. Last year they started an onsite waterfront charity concert series. It was such a success that they plan to continue the series and have set an ambitious five-year fundraising goal.

Kara says, “Last year we had live music on ten consecutive weekends to raise funds for 10 local organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, Volunteer Emergency Responders, the local Sherriff, and others. We raised $35,000 and were inspired to grow the program in the future. We have established a 501c3 entity, and our goal is to raise $500,000 in five years. Our music venue faces the water, and we encourage boaters to come anchor out. We have the ability to come to your boat and collect donations. On shore, there is dancing and socializing. This year’s series will kick off Memorial Day weekend on Sunday, May 26. Going forward, the charity concerts will be held on Saturday evenings. We’re invested in this community and really hope to have a positive impact.”

Kara adds, “This season we have completely transformed the sit-down restaurant that was previously known as the Captain’s Lounge. We have a new restaurant manager, and the venue is now called the Black Duck. Our more casual poolside restaurant, The Shack, is still operating too.”

Kara says, “On Friday nights during the summer we have live music by the pool, and we’re planning a Jimmy Buffett weekend for mid-August. Sometimes there is so much to do shoreside that boaters stay on the dock the whole weekend. Friendships are formed here, and there is a real sense of community.”

More Ways To Open Maritime Museum Access to All

Not everyone is physically or mentally capable of enjoying a busy Saturday at a museum. Two regional maritime museums have created unique events to open their exhibits to a wider audience.

On Friday, May 17, the Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) in Solomons will host a Night at the Museum for Friends with Disabilities from 5 to 7 p.m. The museum and grounds will open exclusively for guests with disabilities and their families, friends, or caregivers. This free evening of fun is offered through a collaboration with CCPR Therapeutic Recreation Services.

Enjoy the skates and rays, fish, fossils, and maritime history in a relaxed and supportive environment. Learn about river otters and meet Bubbles, CMM’s otter mascot. Poppie the opossum will also make an appearance. Explore the Discovery Room, boat basin, and Drum Point Lighthouse (calvertmarinemuseum.com).

The second Sunday of each month, the Mariners’ Museum and Park in Newport News, VA, hosts Friendly Hours for family members, friends, or loved ones who need a tailored museum experience. These hours are reserved for guests, including those with mobility, cognitive, or physical challenges, who prefer to experience the museum in a quieter, less crowded environment with reduced sound and lighting. Safety protocols also take precedent during this time to ensure all guests, volunteers, and the museum team are protected. Space is limited. Although the only cost is $1 museum admission, guests are encouraged to

purchase advance tickets online so that the staff knows you are coming (marinersmuseum.org).

Do you know of more opportunities at regional maritime museums to increase access to their exhibits? Tell us about them by emailing editor@proptalk.com

Formula 457 Center Console Sport

I’m walking down a sweltering dock in Miami, FL, dripping sweat and chugging water when the new Formula 457 catches my eye. I jump aboard for a look and am immediately drawn towards the helm, where three gloriously massive MFDs are flushmounted side by side in a glass-bridge style and… hold the phone people, what is this?! There’s a luxuriously cool breeze bathing my face and wafting across my back. Sweet relief from the heat is enveloping me and it no longer feels as if I’m in a Floridian furnace, thanks to air conditioning piped in not only from the console but also breezing through from behind the seats. I do what any sentient human being would do: I sit down. And I find that I’m ensconced in a bolstered adjustable seat with thickly padded arm rests and multiple cupholders within easy reach. You say you want a center console sport boat with a luxury level of 10? Formula has created it.

Driven though I was to check out the convertible bow lounger with integrated cooler, forward U-seating, and adjustable dinette/sunpad surrounded with USB ports, cup holders, and multicolor RGB mood lighting, it seemed to make a lot

loa: 45’7” | Beam: 13’9” | DraFt(maX.): 4’6”

DISPlacement (aPProX.): 33,250 LBS | maX HP: 1800

Fuel caPacIty: 700 gaL | Water caPacIty: 90 gaL

more sense to check out the also-airconditioned console cabin next. Sure, it maintains that sky-high luxury level, but the cabin in this boat is set apart from its competitors in a number of ways. Sheer volume helps, of course, and once inside it’s tough to believe you’re standing inside a center console—one

with six feet, six inches of headroom throughout, no less. There’s a full galley area in the middle to starboard including a microwave, sink, refrigerator, and deep slide-out drawers. Forward, the convertible settee/dinette/berth is topped by a flush LCD TV and enjoys the full beam of the console rather than coming to a narrow point moving forward like most. Aft you’ll discover a large head compartment which also stretches the full width of the console and has a separate stall shower to starboard.

Taken together, that bow arrangement and the console cabin demonstrate how Formula designed this boat to best utilize the available space. By utilizing the maximum available beam in the cabin but still allowing plenty of length for the bow cockpit, there’s ample room to relax both above decks and below. And that’s without even considering the aft cockpit as of yet. Behind the two-row helm deck seating there’s a huge wet bar with gobs of stowage. The lower half is slide-out seating that faces aft where you can set up the removable pedestal-mounted dinette tables, also within easy reach of the transom bench seating.

Boat Review
# Photos courtesy of Formula Boats

There’s plenty more we could talk about in that cockpit, ranging from hullside doors on both sides to the electric grill in the transom. But we’re running out of room without having touched on performance yet, and as anyone familiar with Formula boats knows, this is going to be a high point that can’t be overlooked. With triple Mercury Verado V-12 600-hp outboards on the transom and Formula’s 22-degree deadrise, twin-stepped FAS3Tech hull skimming the water’s surface, the 457 Center Console Sport can top the 60mph mark. Yes, this 33,250-pound 45-footer can hit highway speeds. Even when you set the throttles for a relatively mellow 4500 rpm cruise, you’ll be clipping along at over 40 mph.

Another thing we need to make sure we touch on is, well, special touches. On this boat they’re all over the place. You decide you’d rather have a fresh sea breeze as opposed to air conditioning at the helm? No problem, just press a button and the entire windshield raises up. Your phone is dying? Not aboard this boat, because there are induction chargers at the helm and integrated into the first-row seating seatbacks so you can charge up wherever you’re perched. The beam sea makes the boat rock and roll? Balderdash, all you need to do is turn on the Seakeeper 6 gyroscopic stabilizer.

The bottom line? Formula sets a new bar for luxury on a high-performance center console with the 457 Center Console Sport. Get ready to turn that dial from 10 to 11. #

HCambridge, MD

istoric Cambridge is located on the Choptank River in Dorchester County, MD. The town is named after the slightly more famous city in England. Cambridge is just a bit off the typical well-traveled path of Chesapeake Cruisers. The trip will take you about 16 miles from the Bay proper, mostly headed east on the Choptank River. Trust us, it is well worth the diversion.

History

Colonists from England settled here beginning in 1684, making it one of the oldest colonial cities in Maryland. These colonists essentially initiated farming on the Eastern Shore— tobacco at first and later a broader mix of crops. The town became a bustling seaport, a nexus for the export of crops and import of goods to build the region.

Over time, the town pier was also a center for slave trading, a history you can learn more about by following the historical markers through the town center. Cambridge became a stop on the Underground Railroad and had an extensive network of safe houses for enslaved people escaping to the north.

Harriet Tubman, born nearby, escaped slavery and became a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. She led enslaved people to freedom before the Civil War, all while carrying a bounty on her head. She was also a nurse, Union spy, and a women’s suffrage supporter. You should definitely plan to visit the Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center, a short walk from the marinas.

James Michener lived off the Miles River in nearby St. Michaels when he wrote his epic novel, “Chesapeake.” Cambridge was the inspiration for his fictional town of Patamoke, which he placed opposite Cambridge’s actual location.

Marinas

There are two large marinas behind a shared breakwater as you come upon Cambridge. The always

welcoming Cambridge Yacht Club is to starboard as you enter the breakwater. The Cambridge Yacht Basin is to port and includes a fuel dock. Slip reservations for both can be made on Dockwa.

Down at the end of Cambridge Creek is the Generation III Marina. They have a handful of transient slips, but the real attraction is the mechanics and craftsmen on site. Add to that the Yacht Maintenance Company and Mid-Shore Electronics, also on Cambridge Creek, and you can get almost anything old or broken on your boat replaced or fixed.

And we can’t forget the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa, and Marina (see sidebar for more details).

See the Bay
# Historic Cambridge is located on the Choptank River in Dorchester County, MD. # The Choptank River Lighthouse. # You should definitely plan to visit the Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center.

In Town

From any of these mooring locations, you can easily walk into town. Now the fun begins!

As you walk from the marinas to town via High Street you will walk past stately homes that were most assuredly initially built by the sea captains who made a home in Cambridge. You can almost hear the celebrations as they return from a long sea journey.

Besides the Tubman Museum, you will find an abundance of historical markers that will deepen your understanding of Cambridge’s place in our local history. The town is also blessed with several murals, all part of the Chesapeake Mural Trail in Dorchester County.

The Richardson Maritime Museum, also along High Street, was founded in memory of Capt. James B. Richardson, a prominent local boatbuilder. The historical record will show that “Mr. Jim’s” boatbuilding skills helped Cambridge transition from seagoing trade to a boatbuilding center. Sadly, the museum is temporarily closed. A transitional museum display is expected to open to the public in early

Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay

There is a totally different but equally pleasing experience to be had in Cambridge. If you are looking for a relaxing resort, maybe a little golf or a spa visit, the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina beckons.

The resort is a long walk to downtown, maybe three miles. But why leave? It offers three pools (one indoors), the 18-hole River Marsh Golf Course, and the Sago Spa. There are seven places to get a bite to eat from fine dining to grab-and-go.

If you are bringing kids with you, they offer a particular advantage. You can drop the kids off for a full-day camp and enjoy a little adult time to take advantage of the golf course or spa.

You can easily secure the boat in their 150-slip breakwater-protected marina. Stay on the boat or opt for one of their 400 rooms and suites. They book slips via Snag-A-Slip. All boaters who dock their boats overnight at the marina gain access to all of the amenities of the resort, so snag your slip and make the best of their 342 acres of beautiful waterfront on the Choptank River.

2024 and will be worth a look. Check their website for news of the reopening.

Downtown Cambridge has shops of interest and maybe a dozen places to find sustenance, or a beer. As in any town, some restaurants come and go, the natural order

As it sounds, the fare is Thai and Italian. The owners and operators are a Thai and Italian couple. We can’t opine as to the level of fusion in the food choices.

The folks at our table mostly ordered traditional Thai or Italian favorites. All around the table were happy with their choices!

of rejuvenation. If you have not been there recently, there are likely new restaurants to experience.

On our last visit (October 2023), we discovered Thaitalian Infusion Cuisine.

It is the kids of the owners who are the real fusion. We met a smiling and engaged son and daughter working the tables. Their banter with the diners and each other left it clear that they were having fun working with each other and their mom and dad on a busy Saturday night.

Spot restaurant. This gives them more room to serve and the opportunity to add a “wine bar” to their name.

Did I mention ice cream? Since no cruise is truly complete without ice cream, let me assure you that yes, you can find ice cream in Cambridge. Harriet’s Homemade Ice Cream & Cakes and T’s Divine Sweets & More, both on Poplar Street, can make it happen for you.

For a little take-home taste of the Bay, we suggest you stop at J. M. Clayton Company. They are known for their freshly caught seafood, especially their freshly handpicked jumbo lump crab meat called Epicure. In our opinion their jumbo lump crabmeat is the best on the planet. The Company was founded in 1890 by Captain John Morgan Clayton (known as Captain Johnnie) and has remained in the family for four generations. This is the oldest working crab processing plant in the world.

Now, about that beer… Cambridge is the home of RAR Brewing. Turning left as High Street meets Poplar Street you will find RAR in an 80-year-old former pool hall and bowling alley. Founded in 2013, RAR brews 10 barrels at a time in this brewery, tasting room, and pub.

We can’t resist a word about craft brewing here. By the end of 2022 there were an amazing 9500 craft breweries in the U.S. Craft brewers had retail sales of $28.4 billion. That accounted for 24.6 percent of the total U.S. beer market. This buildup of craft brewers began in earnest in the early 2000s and RAR was a little ahead of the pack. (For more on Chesapeake Bay microbreweries watch for the August issue of PropTalk.)

When it comes to Cambridge the expression: “the juice is worth the squeeze” comes to mind. Yes, especially for a slower boat, the trip up the Choptank may be a bit of a reach. But the visitor who makes the trek will be richer for the effort. # #

Powerboat Racing in Cambridge

The Cambridge Classic Powerboat Regatta takes place May 18-19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day (weather permitting), on Hambrooks Bay off the Choptank River. This is the oldest active powerboat race in the country (now in its 113th year!). The race is presented by the Cambridge Power Boat Regatta Association (CPBRA), the Hydroplane Racing League, and the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce. Admission is free with a $5 a day donation for parking. Learn more at cpbra.com. The Kent Narrows Racing Association hosts the seventh annual Thunder on the Choptank July 20-21 on the Choptank River. Racing starts at 10:30 a.m. both days, and the best viewing is from Great Marsh Park. There will be food and drinks on-site to make it a fun-filled weekend of racing for the whole family. Visit kentnarrowsracing.com for more information.

A Quick Guide to Safe Towing BoatUS Magazine gave us permission to run an article by Michael Vatalaro about towing safety. Here is a condensed version. Find the full article at proptalk.com/watersportstowing-safety

Keep your distance. The most important thing to remember when towing anyone behind the boat, whether on skis, a wakeboard, or on a tube, is to keep a safe distance from both fixed objects like docks, channel markers, bulkheads, or shorelines—and from shallow water on both sides of the boat. While ropes made for towing tubers are sometimes shorter, a full-length ski rope measures 75 feet long. Add another few feet to account for any yoke, or tow bridle, plus the length of the tube itself, and it’s best to consider 100 feet as a bare minimum safe distance.

A tumbling tuber ejected from his or her ride will often travel an impressive distance above or on top of the water, so more room is safer. If you imagine a swath of water 300 feet wide (the length of a football field) with the boat at the center as your “safe zone” and steer to prevent anything from entering that zone, you’ll be off to a good start.

Speed is relative. If you’ve ever experienced the exhilaration of being whipped through a tight turn at the end of a ski rope, you know that the tube hums along,

skipping lightly across the water. But it may surprise you to know just how much faster the tube is traveling than the boat. The key to this is the length of the ski rope, which puts the tube through a much greater length arc than the boat itself. In a full turn, particularly a tight one, the tube may travel twice the distance of the boat, which means it’s travelling twice as fast as well. So, while you, the skipper, may be experiencing that turn at a sedate 20 mph, your rider feels the water rushing by at 40 mph or more, making it doubly important to avoid those aforementioned solid objects.

Be aware of other boats. Other than striking a dock or piling, perhaps the greatest danger to a tuber is other boats, particularly after a rider falls off the tube. Unlike skiing, tubing doesn’t require flat water, so you often see tubers in more crowded waters. It can be difficult to see someone bobbing in the water waiting to be picked up, even if the tuber is wearing a brightly colored life jacket. Other boaters don’t expect swimmers away from shore where you’re likely to be towing, and they can easily fail to spot a head just above water. Skiers and wakeboarders are taught to hold their ski or board up out of the water to increase visibility. Tubers don’t have this option. For this reason, some states require boaters to display an orange flag on the boat when a rider is down in the water. Avoid towing in congested areas. Pay attention to other boats transiting the area. Their operators may not be watching you or paying attention to the erratic movements you’re making while trying to give

your tuber a thrilling ride. Your spotter, a second adult in the boat responsible for keeping an eye on the rider, will allow you to focus on driving, and not the rider. For more expert articles and videos to make your boating, sailing, or fishing better, visit BoatUS.com

A Bay Pilot’s Final Voyage

On Saturday morning, February 10, I got a text from my brother, Captain Chris Yearwood: “Want to take a ride on a ship from Sparrows Point to the Chesapeake and Delaware (C&D) Canal?” I was in the middle of a bathroom renovation project, but quickly said yes as this would be one of my brother’s last trips before retiring as a Maryland Bay Pilot.

We boarded the Supreme Ace, a 656-foot-long car carrier, at Sparrows Point just before noon. The ship was bound for Germany loaded with just over 1100 vehicles, well short of its 6800-vehicle capacity. After greeting the captain on the bridge, obtaining the ship particulars, and speaking with the two tugboat captains, my brother asked the captain to have the crew start letting go of lines. We

# Supreme Ace underway.

were not the only ones on the bridge of the ship; there was also a helmsman to steer and an officer to operate the engine order telegraph and take care of other bridge duties. Although the ship was flagged Panamanian, the entire crew were Filipino, and the owner of the ship was a Japanese company.

We undocked shortly after 1 p.m. with the help of two tugs and the ship’s bow-thruster, which were also used to turn the massive ship around to head out of the channel. Undocking and docking these large vessels demand great expertise from the pilots who communicate closely with the ship’s captain, helmsman, and tugboats. Once in the channel and underway, my brother gave the order for the tugs to depart. It was a clear day, and we had a light breeze, which made the transit uneventful.

As a former U.S. Merchant Mariner, I’ve always had a great amount of respect for pilots, whose primary job is to navigate vessels safely through waters, protecting the environment, people, the ship, and its cargo. Piloting is demanding— long hours, it’s dangerous (getting on and off the ship), and requires great skill and experience. It’s almost an art form.

The pilot’s commands to the ship’s crew on the bridge were brief and consisted of rudder orders (e.g., starboard 20), course heading (e.g., one four zero) and engine speed. The orders are always repeated by the crew followed by a “very well” from my brother. He would also communicate with other nearby vessels to arrange safe passage using the VHF radio. We had to slow

# Undocking at Sparrow’s Point.

down as we passed a couple of dredges along the way and as we entered the C&D Canal. The wake from this ship can cause damage to other vessels and shorelines, so it is important that the vessel slows down in these situations.

Just before the canal bridge on the western side of the C&D Canal, the pilot boat came alongside the ship and a Delaware pilot boarded to navigate the ship the rest of the way through the C&D canal and out the Delaware Bay. My brother had a brief turnover discussion with the Delaware pilot, and then we departed the ship, taking the elevator down to the main deck, where we exited a side port to a Jacob’s ladder hanging off the side of the ship. We climbed down the ladder and hopped on the pilot boat which transported us to Schaefer’s Canal House where our ride was waiting to take us back to Baltimore.

I’m very proud of my brother and the stellar career he enjoyed while

protecting our beautiful Chesapeake Bay and ensuring the safe movement of commerce. Captain Yearwood will continue to spend time on the water in the Annapolis area, but mostly on recreational

vessels as he pursues his other onthe-water passions (sailing, fishing, waterskiing, and anything else that gets him on the water). Fair winds and following seas brother!

# Cruising at night comes with a new set of challenges, requirements, and really some of the most peaceful times you will ever enjoy on a boat.

INight Cruising

’ll never forget the night I was anchored out for the Fourth of July fireworks. It was a beautiful night, the stars were stunning, and the fireworks show was nothing short of amazing. We were on my first motor yacht, and when the show was over, all the boats around us started up their engines at once, weighed anchor, and got underway. It was a glut of hundreds of boats all moving at once in the dark, so we made the decision to wait at anchor until most of them had cleared out before we’d do the same.

When the time came, I started the engines and we got the anchor up, and it wasn’t long before a pontoon boat full of revelers and I were facing each other underway. The pontoon captain was running with his “docking lights” turned on, and I was suddenly blind. I changed course to get away from his vision-stealing illumination, and when I got home,

I did a deep dive into when such lights are supposed to be used. Suffice it to say, they are not “running lights.”

Truly, there is nothing quite as amazing as spending a wonderful day out on the water. Get out there and have a little fun and sun, and then enjoy the magic that is the sunset on the water. If you stay out much longer than that, you will be cruising at night, and with that comes a new set of challenges, requirements, and really some of the most peaceful times you will ever enjoy on a boat.

Navigation Lights

If you are going to be out after dark, the most obvious checklist item should be to make sure ALL your navigation lights work and are legal for your vessel type and size before you ever leave the dock (find more details at boatus.org/studyguide/navigation/lights). This means at a minimum, a power-driven vessel under

12 meters/39 feet should have a red and green and an all-around (360-degree) white light (vessels over 12 meters/39 feet need a stern and masthead light in place of the all-around). Equally important though is to know what lights to use and when—or when not to use certain lights.

Those fancy docking lights I mentioned above, spreader lights, or the floodlight/spotlight that your vessel may have come with are for docking, close-quarters navigation, and sporadic use to spot channel markers or other obstacles in the water. They are not to be used like headlights on a car. Turning them on and leaving them on while underway is not only bad form, but it can be truly dangerous—they can damage not only your night vision but that of skippers around you. None of us wants to be the reason someone else has a bad night on the water.

away. During the day, you might never refer to your chartplotter or your navigation apps, but now you need them— and if you have radar and/or AIS, now is the time to use that as well to keep an eye on the vessel traffic around you. Maintain a careful watch over the water around you and pay close attention to your chartplotter/navigation apps so you can see where the aids to navigation (AToNs) should be, where charted hazards or restricted areas are, and, as with any time you are running in restricted visibility, don’t go faster than you can safely react to changing situations around you. In the dark, your situational awareness becomes very important. Roaring engines can not only move your vessel too fast to process and react but can also prevent you from hearing a situation on the water that requires reaction. Slowing down is very important.

it, you

Be Vigilant

So, you’re well equipped, you’re underway at night running at a responsible, safe speed with the correct navigation and marker lights turned on, extraneous lighting turned off to save your vision, and keeping an eye on your apps/chartplotter. That’s all you have to worry about, right? Well, it’s a good start, but just as during the day, you need to keep your head on a swivel. Eyes up looking for looming shadows (if it gets dark fast in front of you, that’s a clue you might be about to hit something BIG). Look for lights— stationary lights that could be on land or mounted on AToNs, and moving lights that might be boats, barges, and tugs, or even ships. Learn what the various lights on boats look like and what they mean in various combinations, and learn to identify if they are moving toward you or away from you.

to let them know you’re there, and if you are to pass or overtake them, ask them to suggest the safest way to do so. If you have no radio, you should use whistle signals as prescribed under Rule 34.

Finally—and this applies day and night—know the rules and understand your navigation markers both lighted and non-lighted. Lighted markers are key to giving you an idea of where you are at night, but you also need to be aware of non-lighted markers and use your light to spot them as you get close (instead of hitting them—ask me how I know). If you have friends on the boat with you, make sure everyone is vigilant and be ready to react to changing situations as they are reported to you. Navigating in the dark can be challenging, but it can also be loads of fun. Be prepared, run your vessel safely and responsibly in accordance with the Rules of the Road, and always, boat sober.

Citizen Science for Boaters

We are asked to help clean up the world’s waters.

We boaters have a unique perspective. We see the water and shoreline differently, and scientists want to hear about it. Citizen science is becoming more and more a part of our modern lives. Noting and logging your observations while you’re out on the water can provide valuable data to support the research being used to improve the state of the world’s waterways.

Being a citizen scientist is how we can support, clean up, and preserve the health of our waters. Organizations are asking for our help and here’s how:

42 June 2024 PropTalk.com

Seakeepers Society is an organization doing research, education, protection, and restoration. They are asking boaters to share the data that our navigation equipment collects as a means of broadening the sea/riverbed mapping. Their projects include microscopic life sampling, seafloor mapping, and microplastic sampling. Did you know that only about 20 percent of the sea floor is mapped? Their Seabed 2030 project seeks to inspire the complete mapping of the world’s ocean by 2030. Private boats can participate in increasing our knowledge of the ocean by sharing the depth measurements our navigation instruments collect while we’re out on the water. They provide all the equipment and guidance you need to help. Their sampling projects ask private yachts to collect samples of organisms, algae, plastics, plankton, seawater, and more using their unique nets. Learn more at seakeepers.org/citizen-science.

In our own waters, Chesapeake Water Watch is developing new ways to use remote sensing to fill in water monitoring gaps, and they’re testing those tools right here in the Bay. They need us, as citizen scientists, to collect data with simple-to-use

scientific equipment and smartphone applications. These measurements will be used by researchers to help “train” the satellites to accurately monitor the water in the Bay. Visit serc.si.edu and type ‘Chesapeake Water Watch’ in the search bar for more information.

We all see dolphins around the Bay sometimes. There’s a team studying them and their behavior at University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s (UMCES) Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL). They developed an app, DolphinWatch, for members of the public to report dolphin sightings. The app engages the public to help answer questions surrounding dolphins in the Chesapeake Bay, and all the participating citizen scientists are helping UMCES learn more about these incredible Chesapeake Bay mammals. This observation network provides information on dolphin distribution and behaviors. Visit umces.edu/dolphinwatch to learn more about this project, view photos and videos of dolphin sightings, and to view a tutorial video on using the app. Citizen science is a powerful tool in our internet connected world. There are smartphone apps to report the plants around us and bird sightings. There are apps to track plastic in streams. There are opportunities to help with archeological digs. These are all a part of citizen science. These organizations and many more can benefit from our observations and sampling. We can make a difference in cleaning up our local and worldwide waterways. It’s been done and we’ve been a part of the success stories.

How TO Prevent Fuel Spills

O Ti P

It’s easier than you think to accidentally turn what should be a routine chore at the fuel dock into a first-class mess. Part of being a sensible, responsible boater is ensuring that fuel tanks are filled correctly and no fuel is spilled into the water, which can have significant consequences for aquatic life. Here are 10 simple ways to avoid this issue.

Filling fuel tanks requires careful procedures. Even if a fuel-fill nozzle has a lock-off device, don’t use it. By the time the nozzle catch has tripped and stopped the flow of fuel, you may have already sent a fair amount of fuel onto the deck and into the water. This malady is most often caused by “burping,” which is the result of air trapped in the tank or the boat’s fill hose. It escapes through the fuel fill, bringing fuel with it.

The Clean Way Fuel Fill (cleanwayfuelfill.shop) is an example of a product that helps avoid fuel spills at the pump. In the event of fuel burping back through the filler, excess fuel is directed upward into the device, where downward sloping baffles lead overflowing fuel back into the tank.

Another method is to wrap an oilabsorbent pad or heavy absorbent sock around the fuel fill nozzle to catch any blowback or errant spills. And always keep ample oil-absorbent pads within quick reach should something go wrong. An internet search will reveal various products to help prevent spills, but always look for testing reviews and do some testing yourself to be sure that any product does as advertised in your situation.

Fuel in the Bilge

Not all oil pollution occurs while filling the boat with fuel. Bilge water often contains oil, grease, and fuel. To prevent this oily water from being pumped out of the boat by the bilge pump, consider placing oil-absorbent sheets under inboard engines. A couple of oil absorbent bilge socks or sausages in the lowest part of the bilge close to the bilge pump pickup (but not interfering with the pickup or switch) will go a long way to preventing dirty bilge water from polluting waterways.

At least once a year, check all fuel hoses for cracks and loose connections that may cause leaks, replacing any that may be suspect. ABYC standards stipulate that all fuel fill hoses should be double-clamped, so ensure that all hose clamps are in place and well tightened.

In sum, preventing spills is up to all of us. Using a little common sense and some basic preventive measures, we can keep our waterways clean for all. But no matter which “devices” or techniques you use, “CAUTION” is always in order. With fuel, oil, or grease, it doesn’t take much on a boat for something to go wrong causing a sheen on the surface.

If you have a gasoline inboard engine, run the blower for at least four minutes—more is better—after filling the tank to disperse explosive vapors before attempting to start the engine. The blower and its switch should be ignition-protected and designed for the purpose.

10 Ways To Prevent Fuel Spills

1. Make sure that you’re putting fuel into the correct tank. Geico/BoatU.S. receives claims each year from someone pumping fuel into a rod holder or water tank.

2. Fill tanks only to about 95 percent capacity to allow for expansion and sloshing as the boat moves.

3. Do not top off the tank. The boat’s movement may cause fuel to leak from the tank vent, causing pollution.

4. Use absorbent sheets or pads around the fuel pump nozzle while transferring it from the dock to the boat and while filling to prevent splashes marking boat decks and leaking into the water.

5. Listen carefully. It’s often possible to hear when the fuel is getting closer to the top of the tank.

6. Hold (or have someone else hold) a highly absorbent rag or fuel absorbent pad at the fuel tank’s air vent to absorb any spillage from the vent. Or consider purchasing a fuel-vent collection device that sticks on the outside of the boat with suction cups and will hopefully collect any fuel that happens to find its way out of the vent. But if there is ANY question of this type of device adhering to the hull, have someone hold it in place.

7. Consider installing a whistle in the fuelvent line, designed to make noise as long as fuel is flowing. As soon as the tank is full, the whistle stops, and you know it’s full.

8. Don’t let the higher pump speed catch you unaware. Many pumps at fuel docks fill at a much quicker rate than those at the local gas station to allow boats that often have large fuel tanks to fill faster. Also, even if a fuel-fill nozzle has a lock-off device, don’t use it. By the time the nozzle catch has tripped and stopped the flow of fuel, you may have already sent a fair amount of fuel onto the deck and into the water.

9. Regularly check your fuel system for leaks. Not only is this a fire and explosion hazard, but if fuel leaks into the bilge, it may be pumped over the side by the bilge pump.

10. Replace the gas cap after fueling, and maintain the gasketing around the cap.

What To Do If It Happens

By law, any oil or fuel spill that leaves a sheen on the water must be reported to the U.S. Coast Guard National Response Center by calling (800) 424-8802. If it happens, do not (as some have erroneously done) try to use detergents of any kind to disperse spilled fuel. This does more harm than good. It only breaks down the fuel floating on the water into smaller particles, making it much harder to clean up and more toxic to marine life. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one pint of fuel spilled into the water creates a toxic oil slick that can cover one acre, larger than a football field.

50+ Years and Three Generations at Anchor Boats

this month’s Bay People page brings you a whole family: the three generations of trainers who run anchor Boats and marina in north east, mD.

The early days.

In the early 1970s Ed “Butch” Trainer opened a sporting goods shop on Route 272, the road leading into North East, MD. The shop sold hunting and fishing supplies and small, aluminum Jon boats. As demand for the boats grew, Butch stocked bigger boats and engines. The business expands. Eventually the boating lines were selling so well that Butch decided to close the sporting goods shop and concentrate on boats and engines. In 1973 he opened a small dealership that he called Anchor Boats. It’s still operating today, more than 50 years later. In 1980 the business expanded to add Anchor Marina, offering customers a dry dock storage, called ‘high

and dry,’ that can house nearly 400 boats. There is also a ramp, 15 slips (eight with lifts), floating docks for public daytime use, a pump-out station, and a parts and accessories store.

Three generations.

Matt says, “My brother and I grew up in the business—working at the gas dock, washing boats, painting bottoms—and our kids did the same. I’ve spent my whole

career here except for a short time when I worked for Viking Yachts right after graduating from college, but I wanted to get back to the family business. It’s what I knew and what I enjoyed.”

Today Matt and Ed II manage the day-to-day operations of the thriving business. Matt runs the sales department while Ed manages the marina, which is located nearby in North East Harbor.

The next generation is following in their fathers’ footsteps. They too started out working at the gas dock and washing and painting boat bottoms. Ed’s son, Ethan, a recent college graduate, is currently working in sales with Matt, who is teaching him the ropes, and before moving on to other endeavors, Ed III spent three years at the business. Matt’s daughter, Emily, now in college, has also enjoyed working at the family-run company.

Matt says, “It’s a team effort. Each of us can float into different areas of the business as needed because we’ve all spent years jumping in to help wherever it’s needed. We run our business differently than some dealerships. We have a small staff, which means we all work very hard and wear about 10 different hats, but we like it that way. From my perspective, that’s just part of operating a family business.”

Building on a solid foundation. “Most of what I know about business I learned from my dad,” says Matt, “especially how to work hard. Dad is 79 years old and still comes to work seven days a week. Beyond the work ethic that he is still modeling for the younger generations, my dad taught me the ins and outs of how to run a dealership and make sound business decisions.”

Matt says that even with a solid foundation, each generation will put its own spin on the business that is passed down to them.

“You have to be open to change, not just because of generational differences, but because of changes in the industry. For example, technology has advanced so much. Another example of change is how the industry is moving toward outboards. We’ve responded to that, and today we are a key Yamaha dealer. Almost all the orders we

Got a New Boat?

place for new boats have Yamaha outboards on them.

“For 34 years Anchor Boats was exclusively a Wellcraft dealer, but today we carry new boats from Four Winns, Key West, Robalo, G-3, Scout, and SunCatcher, plus a large selection of used boats. There have been other changes over time, too. Some of them are behind the scenes—things like how we monitor inventory and order parts.”

Generations of customers, too! Matt says, “We work hard to provide excellent customer service and competitive pricing, and we see the results when the next generations of customers return to buy a boat from us or use our marina facilities. We have plenty of customers whose parents bought boats from us, and in a few cases we even have customers whose grandparents bought boats from us. That is what it’s all about!”

The CBGBOA recently transitioned from an association to a yacht club with a home port at the Oxford Yacht Agency in Oxford, MD. This also means our former president of the club, Steve Lingsch, is now the CBGBOA commodore, and he received his first commodore’s flag at this year’s annual gathering. Becoming a yacht club has the added benefit that our members are now also members of Yachting Clubs of America with all the reciprocal yacht club benefits that come with membership.

We are looking forward to another season of shared experiences and camaraderie on the uniquely diverse Chesapeake Bay. If you are interested in joining the club, please access cbgboa.org to start the process.

Mid-Atlantic ACBS Classic Boats Impress

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS) had a bustling presence at the Atlantic City Boat Show February 28-March 3. Its booth drew significant attention, showcasing a variety of classic boats and engines.

Undoubtedly, the highlight was the 1955 Chris-Craft Cobra, distinguished by its elegant design, including a prominent tail fin and a goldfinish engine cover. Admirers also appreciated the intricate alligator trim in the cockpit, generously loaned by the Chesapeake Bay ACBS Chapter for this event. Those interested can witness this remarkable vessel at the

upcoming Antique and Classic Boat Show in St. Michaels, MD, from June 14-16, where it will be on display in the water.

Adding to the excitement was a Glastron outboard, reminiscent of the vessel featured in the 1974 James Bond film “Live and Let Die,” known for its recordbreaking 110-foot boat jump.

Another notable exhibit was the 1923 Morin Craft 28-foot triple cockpit runabout, currently undergoing restoration, and expected to grace the waters within the next couple of years—a true rarity since it’s the only one registered among all 54 ACBS chapters.

Additionally, a meticulously restored Chris-Craft, made from a 1954 kit and equipped with a period-correct outboard, captivated attendees.

The Mid-Atlantic ACBS display also featured a comprehensive selection of outboard motors, including models from Wizard, Evinrude, and Mercury. Despite the high attendance at the booth and the show, it appeared that most visitors were merely spectators rather than potential buyers, likely influenced by prevailing interest rates, which have reportedly dampened boat sales.

SMBCt To host APBA’s Vintage & Historic Division

Southern Maryland Boat Club (SMBC) will welcome boats and drivers from around the country to the shores of St. George’s Creek on the St. Mary’s River, June 8 and 9. Piney Point Landing is the venue where spectators and fans alike will see vintage race boats from the 1950s to 1990s roaring their engines around the threequarter-mile oval course harkening back to the days when Swann’s Pier and Hotel hosted many SMBC races.

Owners and drivers from Canada, Ohio, Illinois, North Carolina, and Florida along with local favorites from Maryland and Virginia will grace Southern Maryland’s waters with their vintage rigs from days gone by. While SMBC is historically an outboard vintage club, several inboards will join the fleet this year including a few flat bottoms. You’ll experience a deafening roar when they light their candles!

Many of the local drivers grew up in the golden age of boat racing when SMBC participated in American Power Boat Association’s (APBA) Outboard Pleasure Craft category which was later renamed Outboard Performance Craft or OPC for short. Today, SMBC is a member of ABPA’s Vintage and Historic division, focusing on race boats that are 25 years old or older.

The St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks manages the facility at Piney Point Landing and graciously offers the historic boat racing site to SMBC for the weekend’s activities. A food truck will be onsite offering tasty treats along with Chesapeake DJ Productions providing lap by lap coverage of the event and DJ music between heats. There is plenty of room in the ample grassy area fronting the course for your viewing pleasure. Bring a lawn chair, sit back, and enjoy a day of watching vintage race boats in high-speed action!

Come see the action in person. Exhibition racing gets underway on Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 9 from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. A one-hour lunch break occurs each day where spectators are welcomed into the pit area to see the boats up close and meet the drivers. Plan a trip to join SMBC for a fun day at this historic race venue!

Corinthian Yacht Club Hosts CBYCA Board

Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC) hosted the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club Association (CBYCA) Board of Governors meeting on Saturday, March 23. A hybrid meeting was conducted in the CYC meeting room, with Zoom connections to board members unable to attend in person.

Discussion topics at the meeting included the use of AI technology to capture notes and actions from the meeting, pending legislation regarding abandoned boats, especially those abandoned in the water, outstanding dues, and club support.

Commodore Robert Naylor led the meeting. CYC commodore Dolores Derrington attended along with vice commodore Marv Storey and delegate Allen Boetig from CYC. The participants visited SALT Waterfront Kitchen nearby for lunch following the meeting.

CBYCA’s board last visited Corinthian in 2012. They were happy to return and spotlighted CYC on the CBYCA website in March (cbyca.org).

CYC is located on the Potomac River near the Chesapeake Bay and has more than 20 acres of serene waterfront property, a clubhouse, pool, boat ramp, and covered slips. However, the real attraction is our members, their camaraderie and genuine caring for each other. Learn more at cycchesapeake.com

36th Antique and Classic Boat Festival and Coastal Arts Fair

“It’s All About Fishing” is the theme of this year’s 36th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Festival and Coastal Arts Fair. Owners of vintage sport and commercial fishing boats are lined up to display their Boston Whaler, Chris-Craft, Rybovich, Hatteras, Lyman, and Egg Harbor beauties along with deadrises and buy boats at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD.

# A 1966 Boston Whaler Eastport.

Traditionally held on Father’s Day weekend, this three-day event to take place June 14-16 is sponsored by The Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS)-Chesapeake Bay Chapter. It is one of the largest classic boat shows in the Mid-Atlantic region.

More than 100 cruisers, runabouts, and racers (wood as well as pre-1997 fiberglass and metal boats) will be displayed both in water and on land. Additionally, there will be a Field of

Dreams for those looking to own a classic or antique boat.

Throughout the day, families can stroll the 17-acre CBMM campus to view these extraordinary boats and talk with their captains, as well as purchase unique works of maritime arts at the juried Coastal Arts Fair. Making YOUR BOaT New Again!

Chris-Craft Silver Arrow A fiberglass boat, or was it?

The years were 1958-1959. Chris-Craft was the world’s largest wood boat builder. They made about 8000 wood boats each year. Ninety two of these 16,000 were called a Silver Arrow. The Silver Arrows were silver blue finished and 19 feet long. They had stand-out fiberglass styled fins and a molded fiberglass deck, but these boats were a standard Chris-Craft. They had a spruce-wood planked hull covered with a fiberglass skin.

The Silver Arrow boat model was a featured boat by Chris-Craft, gracing

the cover of their catalog at one point. It was also their most futuristic boat model. It features curves that may only be done in fiberglass, as the fiberglass cloth material follows the curves from the mold.

The fins on the transom’s stern were influenced by the design of early sketches of the 1959 Buick. Bob Cardaret of GM styling studio was a good friend of Don Mortrude (Chris-Craft’s outsidecontract designer for the Silver Arrow model). They had lunch together at the GM styling studio while the early styling of that Buick was displayed on

the wall. It is his interpretation of what he saw there. He, like all outside stylist/naval architects, was answered to Chris-Craft’s head of styling, Bill MacKerer (an over 40-year employee of Chris-Craft).

She looked like a fiberglass boat in every way. The Silver Arrow was the first and only boat model that ChrisCraft made that way. Want to check for yourself? On any Silver Arrow boat, look forward under the dash panel and up far in front of the foot kick panel and you’ll see the framing of a wood hull.

On the water, the construction of two different materials made a boat that was more substantial than the lightweight boats that were typical of most Chris-Crafts in that era. She weighs about 20 percent more than the other 19-foot Chris-Crafts. That makes for a poor waterski boat as she is slow to plane. It also gives, once planing, a better, softer, cuttingthrough-the-chop ride through the water.

That extra heft splits and flattens out cruiser wakes and large wind-generated waves for an outstanding cruising experience in a craft that consistently turns heads. She is typically and justifiably the star of any waterway.

A Silver Arrow also has anti-trip chines that allow it to bank into a turn better than most runabouts. With a good exhaust note, a cushioned ride not bothered by boat wakes, and a gleaming silver paint finish she really has presence. My ride aboard was smooth, powerful, and great fun on the lake.

Models like this Silver Arrow were deliberately built heavy to address the early durability issues that surfaced in Chris-Craft’s fiberglass boats. But the weight coupled with the production costs inherent in that approach limited sales. The high costs and low sales quickly ended the Arrow’s run as a star Chris-Craft boat model. Meanwhile as Chris-Craft struggled to change its marketing strategy and manufacturing processes to adapt to the new and popular boat-building material, Sea Ray and Wellcraft came along and eclipsed them as the new leadership brands in fiberglass production boats.

Boats In My Blood

The restoration of any 19-foot Silver Arrow that is an award-winning work of art requires accomplished wooden boat restoration experience plus fiberglass boat refinishing skills. Her metal trim must be straightened, polished, and then all the unique trim pieces on the boat must be buffed to the same level of shine that Chris-Craft

used in 1959. Replacement metal trim is not available.

Find Chris-Craft’s and many other classic boats at this year’s Antique and Classic Boat Festival and Coastal Arts Fair June 14-16 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD (learn more on page 57). It is the largest classic boat show on the East Coast after Sunnyland.

Marine Engine & Generator Sales • Parts • Service

The spring shows are behind us, and the launching frenzy is calming down, so the season is definitely off to a good start. This fourth season after the pandemic still shows no signs of a serious slowdown in interest in boating, so most people seem to be expecting a good season. One thing of note is the number of marinas converting to, or adding, floating docks. Sea level rise has become an inconvenient fact on our waters and most shops and marinas seem to be coping well.

Andy Dize from Roudebush Yacht and Engine Works in Dundalk, MD, brings us up to date from a part of the Bay which has been much in the news lately. “Since the collapse of the Key Bridge, we have seen an increase in requests for work and slips this spring. Our marina access is unrestricted from the Patapsco River into Bear Creek as it is located outside of the bridge exclusion zone. Projects we are working on include a Bayliner 22 for hull and topside fiberglass repair, a Lar-

son 32 topside gelcoat repair, a 30-foot Sharpie refurbishment of hull and rigging, and a Robalo 21 for hull polishing, bottom paint, deck lighting, and bilge pump replacement. We have started Phase I of our fixed dock repair and installation of floating piers to provide 45 slips for boats from 30 to 110 feet.”

Joe Reid of Mast and Mallet in Edgewater, MD, sends us his latest news. “I spent a portion of late winter building a teak swim platform for a 46foot P.L. Jones deadrise. It measured 13

feet by 24 inches, and I will install it this spring. I finished woodwork repairs and painting on a 2009 Mast and Mallet 25-foot crab yacht. It launched for a spring delivery. Currently, I am re-bedding hatches and varnishing on a Thomas Point 44. Next in the shop is a Thomas Point 30-footer for a new teak and holly sole and varnish and upgraded electronics.”

George Hazzard of Wooden Boat restoration in Millington, MD, sends us this report and request by way

of his Facebook site. “Our latest project, a 1958 26-foot Chris-Craft Sea Skiff, has been hibernating for almost 40 years in a garage in Cambridge, MD. (It’s) surprisingly solid. Lots of paint and varnish to strip. It was re-powered by a 455 Pontiac motor but is missing the exhaust manifolds… so if anyone knows of anyone with a pair of marine manifolds, please contact us. Thank you!”

The latest report from Powers Mobile Marine Service in Easton, MD, is as follows. “Today our beautiful 1980’s Privateer went back home to Delaware Bay. This boat received a full restoration, complete with a new stringer system, full transom, full gunwale rear cap, floor, fuel tank, and to top it off, with a crisp Awlgrip paint job in Aquamist, Cloud White, and Kingston Gray. The entire boat is fully composite made with Coosa. This boat will last many generations. Give us a call if you have a boat you want to bring back to life. If you think it’s too far gone, we will show you how it can be brought back to life better than new.”

Brittany Parish from Higgins Yacht Yard in St. Michaels, MD, sends us this timely update. “It’s spring commissioning time here at the boatyard, and we’re off to a great start. Our crew is diligently prepping, painting, and servicing

vessels in preparation for another fantastic boating season. If you plan to handle your own commissioning this year, check out BoatUS’s Spring Commissioning Checklist to have the best and safest time out on the water this season. Online booking for our marina is here, and better than ever! Book your slip directly online today. Holiday and events weekends are filling up quickly, so be sure to reserve in advance.”

One of the more interesting exhibits at the recent Bay Bridge Boat Show, at least for this ancient mariner, was a demonstration of the computer-controlled Optimus steering system. Hydraulic steering systems have been around for a long time, but this is not the old manual one we’re used to. The fully operational system was set up and presented by Richard Hawse of Maryland Marine Electronics. A dummy console included a steering wheel, and when the wheel was turned, the hydraulic rams responded immediately. As Richard explained, “Think of it as a steer by wire system.” He held up a softball-sized wheel hub. “This hub is actually a sensor and can be mounted anywhere in the boat you can get wires to it, making installation easy,” he explained. “When the wheel is turned, this sensor sends a signal to the control box which then sends the signal to the appropriate pump which then sends hydraulic

fluid to the double acting hydraulic rams attached to the rudder tillers which then steer the boat. Essentially, you have no mechanical connection between the wheel and the rudder.” The demonstration system was set up for twin engines, but could obviously be, and is, used for multi engine outboard and inboard applications.

Rob Hardy from Composite Yacht in Trappe, MD, checks in with us. “We’ve got a couple of refits going on, one of them, interestingly enough, is Burt Reynolds’s boat. It’s a one-off Carolina style boat, about 30-some feet. It’s a coldmolded boat that’s been sitting for a long time, so we’re going to do a massive rehab on it. We’ve got another older outboardpowered boat that we did a lot of work on. The paint shed, as always, stays busy. We’ve got a Post in there now and that operation remains booked out through May. On the new construction side, we’ve got two Carolina style 26s under construction and we have a 42-foot Chesapeake style boat with three outboards on a shortened Markley 46 hull. We also have a brandnew model 39-footer that’s designed for outboards and a 50-footer that is moving right along as well. We are expecting delivery of all of them this year. For the future we’ve got a couple of irons in the fire. We’re still moving along, expecting

some interesting new contracts that are probably too soon to discuss and we are cautiously optimistic.”

On the manpower front Rob is also optimistic. “We’re fine at the moment. We are always looking for skilled workers, but we’d rather push hard with overtime and things like that than hire new people and then have to lay them off. In the last

economic downturn we never had to do any layoffs.”

On the supply issue Rob had some interesting comments. “Supply can still be an issue. We don’t hold off on ordering things now. If we know we are going to need them, we order them now. We are no longer waiting till we think we might need them. Supply can still be a consideration.”

We end this month’s report with an announcement and an invitation from Chesapeake Light Craft in Annapolis, MD. “Join us on the beautiful Chester River May 18 for the Big Little Boat Festival. Conquest Beach is situated on the 758-acre Conquest Preserve between the Chester and Corsica Rivers. It is about an hour east of our Annapolis

shop. But we think it will be worth the drive for those visiting from the Western Shore. The beach has easy access for small boats on dollies and plenty of shade on shore. The facility includes two bath houses with showers, plenty of parking, and, best of all, the view of the river is fantastic. The event is free and open to the public.

“Our rowing, sailing, and paddling fleet will be available for on-water demos. Under the pavilion, we will have boatbuilding seminars. The kids’ cardboard boatbuilding event at last year’s BLBF was a huge hit and will return this year. We encourage all our boat builder friends to bring their boats to play with and/or enter the Boatbuilding Contest. Bring your boat,

show off your hard work, and hopefully, you will win a prize! Grab a bite to eat at the on-site food truck, or bring a picnic lunch. On-site camping is available on Friday and Saturday nights. We hope to see you there!”

So, the Chesapeake boating season is definitely here. Enjoy the Bay and be safe on the water. We will see you next month.

Another Record Fallfishes

Just what is up with these fallfish? Last year, two years prior, and two years prior to that we’ve reported on new state record fallfish caught in Maryland. In the course of five years this has raised the bar from 2.07 pounds to—as of this spring—3.2 pounds. On April 1 angler Blake Cronk reeled in the new record fish from the North Branch of the Potomac River while casting worms and spinners in hopes of hooking trout. Congratulations Blake, but we have to wonder… is there a fivepounder swimming around out there somewhere?

More Casting for the Kids

The Maryland DNR has a full slate of angling activities in store for kids, as the Youth Fishing Rodeos, for kids aged three to 15, continue through the 2024 fishing season. These free events are held in multiple ponds and parks throughout the state in 14 different counties, and while all are open to the public, attendees are asked to register as some venues have limited space. Details and contact information can be found on the Maryland DNR Youth Fishing Rodeos webpage.

Top Tagger

Yorktown angler Ed Shepherd was awarded the Top Tagger trophy this spring by the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program. Shepherd tagged 3260 of the 14,700 fish tagged by the program, which has hit a grand total of 417,000 fish since its inception in 1995. Data collected by this cooperative effort between the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission assists managers in learning about fish migration, growth, and habitat use. Tin BoaTs Can Do a LoT

Of course, tin boats are not made of tin, they are made of aluminum. My very first boat was a 14-foot aluminum open craft with a 15-hp motor. That was back in the mid-1960s right after I got out of the Navy and just before I got married. I still have the same wife, but I have gone through several aluminum boats.

My largest was a 21-foot Starcraft that I took offshore, and it did just fine. I never did hook a tuna or billfish, but I did put some dolphin in the box. Unfortunately, the lower unit on the motor died and that cost me a whole summer plus a good deal of money. That fall I bought a new house and sold the boat to help with the down payment. The next summer I was back in a 14-foot tin boat.

This aluminum boat had a 35-hp motor and an extended handle, so I could run it standing in the stern. My dear friend, the late Warren White, had a similar boat and he too had the same set up. We were the only two men I know of who ran 14-foot aluminum boats on the Indian River and Rehoboth bays and the near-shore waters of the Atlantic Ocean in 14-foot boats while standing in the stern. It really is the best way to run

these boats. You can see what’s going on much better because you are standing, not sitting. It is easier to control the boat with the extended handle and when you encounter large waves, say from a boat wake, you just sit back down.

These 14-footers do not have all the comforts of home. In fact, they don’t have any comforts at all.

Warren and I fashioned decks from marine plywood and used coolers to store our fish and cold drinks as well as dry storage for PFDs and rain gear. That’s right, back then we were young and indestructible, so we didn’t wear our PFDs. Today I realize that we were young and foolish. Today I wear my PFD at all times when I am on the water.

Tin boats are not only great for shallow bays, but they are also perfect for rivers where crabbing and fishing don’t require long runs over open water.

I had a friend who rigged his tin boat for trot lining for crabs. We used it several times at Wye River and did quite well. Of course, we had to be in the water well before first light in order to get our lines in where we wanted before the rest of the crabbers arrived. As I recall, we were never the first ones there.

If you don’t own a boat, tin boats are a good first step. They are not as expensive as fiberglass, and you can run one all day on a six-gallon tank of gas. Take a second tank full, just in case.

If you begin with the bare-boat 14-footer, you will have to improvise. I strongly suggest using the extended control handle on the motor. As mentioned above, you have better control and better vision while standing. Putting in a deck of marine plywood is another good idea. As for storage, small to medium coolers work just fine.

My current boat is a 1996 16-foot Starcraft with a 1996 40-hp Mercury motor. This boat has plenty of storage, and I have replaced all the seats. I can take three of us fishing or crabbing with no problem, and most days I still don’t use a tank of gas.

As I have found out on more than one occasion, there is no protection from rain or spray. Last summer my friend David and I got caught in a surprise thunderstorm and both of us were soaked to the skin.

There is no perfect boat, but for a low price and low operating cost, a tin boat is hard to beat.

Prestigious Award

Sharrow Marine announced that the Sharrow Propeller has been named the “Clean Technology Transportation Solution of the Year” in the inaugural CleanTech Breakthrough Awards program. CleanTech Breakthrough is a leading independent market intelligence organization that evaluates and recognizes standout climate and clean technology companies, products, and services around the globe in categories including solar technology, smart grid, energy management, wind energy, waste and recycling, transportation, and more. This recognition reaffirms Sharrow Marine’s commitment to revolutionizing propeller technology and advancing sustainability in transportation. The Sharrow Propeller is recognized as the first major advancement in propeller technology since the 1830s, with a patented design that eliminates or significantly reduces tip cavitation and vortices. The Sharrow Propeller offers up to an 80 percent reduction in noise, a smoother and more reliable boating experience, and up to 30 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to standard propellers. These advantages enhance the boating experience and significantly reduce each boat’s carbon footprint and impact on marine life.

“Receiving the Clean Technology Transportation Solution of the Year award underscores the Sharrow Propeller’s transformative impact in promoting sustainability and efficiency,” said Greg Sharrow, founder and CEO of Sharrow Engineering and Sharrow Marine and inventor of the Sharrow Propeller. “This honor is a testament to our dedication to advancing environmentally friendly solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future and leave the world better than we found it.” sharrowmarine.com

Charters

While you’ve likely seen this “darling” classic powerboat on the water in Annapolis, did you know that it is available for charters? Darling Charters Annapolis was established in the fall of 2022 by Bill and Alexandra Clary, two lifelong sailors, and is conveniently based at the foot of Fourth St. in Eastport near many favorite restaurants and bars. The concept for Darling Charters came from the couple’s desire to share their passion for boating and Annapolis’s unique waterfront, and to deliver it in a classic motorboat with first class touches (think cashmere blankets and elegant charcuterie boards). Darling, a Wasque 32 built on Martha’s Vineyard in 1973, turns heads wherever she goes. Bill hails from a boat building background and takes on the role of Darling’s “technical tinkerer.” He was responsible for the major hull and deck restoration last year and uses his skills to keep her in top shape. Alexandra is Darling’s captain and loves sharing her passion for the water and classic boats. Together they make a perfect team both on and off the water.

Married at the Eastport Yacht Club in the fall of 2020, Bill and Alexandra still consider themselves newlyweds and love having Darling be a part of weddings. She’s a lovely choice for a proposal spot, and there’s also been many “I do’s” aboard! Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, corporate event, or simply seeking a serene escape on the water, Bill and Alexandra are dedicated to crafting an unforgettable cruise tailored for you. They would love to speak with you about creating your own custom experience. Check out their website for some curated cruises: darlingcharters.com or (667) 225-7184.

3D Color Visualizer

Awlgrip, the renowned yacht brand under AkzoNobel, introduces a revolutionary 3D Color Visualizer. The innovative and industry leading tool is designed to empower boaters and applicators by simplifying their journey to find the perfect color for their boat, offering instant access to tens of thousands of colors from the extensive Awlgrip color database. Users can select their vessel type and explore various color options for the hull sides, deck, cabin, boot stripe, and including the fouling control solution for their region. Through AkzoNobel’s expertise in color and utilizing unique algorithms, boaters are now able to gain a visual representation of what their boat could look like in a 3D virtual environment, and then download their project scheme to discuss with their retailer or client. Unlike traditional ‘flat’ panels, the user can manipulate the virtual boat to view colors from different angles, providing a lifelike impression of how complex curves and angles will appear.

Jemma Lampkin, commercial director of AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings, emphasizes that this tool reflects AkzoNobel’s commitment to enriching the customer’s experience when it comes to the important and often emotive subject of color. She said: “This technology development is a testament to the digital innovation and passion that AkzoNobel and our yacht team strive to deliver to boaters and professionals every day. We are truly excited to better assist our boaters and applicators in simplifying their journey towards finding the perfect color and Awlgrip topcoat for their boats.” Find your perfect color with the all new 3D Color Visualizer at awlgrip.com/colors
