A Giving Option Beyond the Holidays: Seattle Children’s Welcomes Year-Round Donations for Kids in Care
During the holiday season, many Seattle residents look for ways to brighten a child’s day. At Seattle Children’s Hospital, the need for comfort, creativity, and distraction continues throughout the entire year. The hospital’s In-Kind Donation Program supports thousands of young patients by providing toys, books, art supplies, sensory tools, and gift cards that help children cope with long treatment days and unexpected hospital stays.
Seattle Children’s items yearround for the Child Life and Family Resource Center. These donations help fill playrooms, stock bedside activity kits, support procedure preparation, and allow staff to celebrate birthdays and milestones in a child friendly way.
WHY THESE DONATIONS MATTER
Hospital environments can feel overwhelming for young patients. Child Life specialists use age-appropriate items to help reduce fear and support emotional health. A small craft kit can calm a child who is waiting for an MRI. A soft toy can comfort a child after surgery. A
book or puzzle can make a long inpatient stay feel more manageable.
Families also benefit from donated gift cards that can cover meals, personal necessities, or urgent items that were left at home when a visit became longer than expected.
IMPORTANT NOTE: HOLIDAY DONATION PAUSE
Seattle Children’s will pause all in-kind donations from December 21, 2025 through January 4, 2026. Anyone hoping to give during the holiday season is encouraged to donate before December 21 or after donations resume on January 5, when items are especially needed again.
WHY DONATIONS MUST BE NEW AND UNUSED
Seattle Children’s requires all donated items to be new, unopened, and unused in order to protect patient health. Many young patients have fragile or compromised immune systems. Dust, pet dander, bacteria, or residue on previously owned items can pose a risk, even if the item looks clean.
This policy ensures that every donation brought into patient rooms and shared activity spaces is safe for children who are medically vulnerable.
WHAT THE HOSPITAL CAN ACCEPT
Seattle Children’s welcomes a wide selection of new items, including:
• Infant and toddler toys
• Books for all ages
• Art and craft kits
• Sensory toys such as fidgets and stress balls
• LEGO sets
• Toiletries for family members
Handmade items are now being accepted on a case-by-case basis with advanced approval from the In-Kind Gift Coordinator. Please email the hospital or call 206-9877078 before creating or dropping off handmade goods.
Items for teens such as journals, earbuds, and sketchbooks
Gift cards, especially Target, Amazon, and general prepaid cards
A LOCAL WAY TO GIVE BACK ALL YEAR
Unlike seasonal toy drives, Seattle Children’s relies on steady, yearround support. New patients arrive every day with their own fears and uncertainties. Community donations help staff brighten long hospital stays, ease stressful moments, and offer children a sense of normalcy.
For Seattle residents, seniors, families, and volunteer groups who want

instructions and approved items, is available at seattlechildrens.org/ giving/toys.
Wild Sockeye Shines in Seattle’s Salmon Week

Seattle diners can look forward to a flavorful week ahead as Bristol Bay Salmon Week returns November 17 through 23. The celebration brings wild Alaskan sockeye to menus across the city, including several favorite restaurants in Queen Anne and Magnolia.
A TASTE OF TRUE WILD ALASKA
Bristol Bay is home to the world’s largest run of wild sockeye salmon. The fish are known for their rich color, firm texture, and naturally high omega-3 content. Careful management and strong community stewardship
have kept the fishery healthy for decades, which is why it remains one of the most sustainable in the world.
During Salmon Week, chefs throughout the region turn this iconic fish into creative dishes. Pan-seared fillets, smoked chowders, sushi rolls, and house specials all offer diners a chance to taste the difference that comes from truly wild salmon.
SUPPORTING FISHING FAMILIES
Every fillet featured during Salmon Week comes from small, family-run fishing operations in the Bristol Bay region. Many crews include parents, children, siblings, or lifelong friends who work short and intense seasons
each summer. Ordering wild sockeye helps support their livelihoods and the ecosystems they depend on.
Seattle’s long connection to Alaska’s fisheries makes this event feel especially close to home. Many local chefs have championed traceable seafood for years, and this week gives diners a chance to appreciate that work. The full list of participating restaurants is available at bristolbaysockeye.org.
LOCAL FLAVOR AND LOCAL IMPACT
For Queen Anne and Magnolia, Salmon Week is more than a good meal. It offers a welcome boost for neighborhood restaurants that are still rebuilding after the past few years. It also highlights our region’s maritime roots and the ties many Seattle families have to Alaska’s fishing industry.
Whether it is dinner out, a fillet from a local market, or a photo shared with the hashtag BristolBaySalmonWeek, residents can help support sustainable fishing and the businesses that keep our neighborhoods lively.
WHY WILD MATTERS
Choosing wild sockeye benefits both the environment and the plate. Wild salmon migrate
across vast distances and feed naturally, which gives them a clean flavor and a strong nutritional profile. By contrast, farmed salmon often face challenges such as overcrowding and pollution.
The Bristol Bay fishery is widely recognized for its science-based management. Biologists monitor the runs each year and set catch limits to ensure enough fish return to spawn. The result is a thriving, renewable resource.
HOW TO JOIN IN
• Visit bristolbaysockeye.org to explore participating restaurants
• Call ahead to learn about special dishes and make reservations
• Ask your server how the salmon was prepared
• Share your meal on social media using the hashtag BristolBaySalmonWeek
• Pick up wild sockeye at local markets if you plan to cook at home Bristol Bay Salmon Week offers a flavorful way to support fishing families, neighborhood restaurants, and sustainable practices. From Alaska’s wild waters to the tables of Queen Anne, it is a story worth celebrating.

The Seattle Grinch Guide to Surviving the Holidays
Let’s be honest: Seattle in December is a mood. The sun sets before lunch, your SAD lamp has seniority in your household, and the 12-foot reindeer in Queen Anne - Gary, obviously - is back for another season of judgmental cheer.
If the mere sound of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” triggers your fight-orflight reflex, congratulations: you might be a Seattle Grinch. Don’t worry; you’re in excellent company. Here’s your unapologetic, caffeine-fueled field guide to surviving (and maybe even enjoying) the holidays in the Emerald City.
STEP 1: BRACE YOURSELF - STARBUCKS RED CUPS ARE BACK
It’s the city’s unofficial alarm clock for the holiday season: Starbucks Red Cup Day landed on November 13 this year, heralding a tidal wave of peppermint mochas, Mariah Carey playlists, and performative cheer. And with it comes the unrelenting reminder of the season as shoppers stroll the sidewalks clutching bedazzled crimson cups.
But you don’t have to surrender. This is Seattle, where indie coffee culture is practically a religion. Ditch the corporate cocoa and head to Storyville Coffee in Queen Anne for genuinely cozy vibes, or Analog Coffee on Capitol Hill for baristas who can match your seasonal sarcasm.
Pro tip: Grab a window seat - you’ll get 19 minutes of daylight before the drizzle reclaims your soul.
STEP 2: EMBRACE YOUR INNER HERMITWITH STYLE
You’ve been practicing social distancing since 2015. Make it fashion. Magnolia’s Petit Pierre Bakery and The Station Café are perfect for low-effort people-watching over croissants. Bring a scarf that doubles as a blanket. You’re not antisocial - you’re seasonally strategic.
Bonus: AirPods mean “I’m in a podcast,” not “I’m ignoring you.”

STEP 3: SHOP LOCAL WITHOUT THE TEARS
Skip the mall - it smells like stress and Cinnabon. Instead:
Magnolia Winterfest Market - Saturday, December 6, 2025, in Magnolia Village. A neighborhood tree-lighting, kids’ crafts, and a full block of local vendors replacing summer patios with handmade candles, jewelry, and knitwear. (discovermagnolia.org)
Queen Anne Artists & Crafts Fair - Early December 2025 at Queen Anne Community Center (1901 1st Ave W). Dozens of neighborhood artists, ceramics, prints, and baked goods that qualify as “edible art.” (queenannecommunitycenter.com)
Can’t face the crowds? Support local without leaving your couch:
Browse Seattle-based Etsy shops or Instagram tags like #SeattleMakers and #QueenAnneArtists.
Gift cards from local boutiques - it’s like telling someone, “I tried,” without lying.
STEP 4: HOLIDAY EVENTS FOR THE SOCIALLY SELECTIVE
You don’t have to fake joy at every treelighting. Curate your own Grinch-approved list:
Argosy Christmas Ship Festival - Watch from shore with a discreet flask. That’s called balance.
Can Can Wonderland Show at Pike PlaceSequins, cocktails, and glitter-level chaos. Pacific Place Snow Machine - It’s fake snow. It’s fine. Take the photo, post ironically. Warning: The Nutcracker will come up, it always does. It’s a tradition for a reason. Just remember: you’re not anti-ballet, you’ll see something new next weekend.
STEP 5: INVENT YOUR OWN TRADITIONS
No kids? No problem. Don’t want to host dinner? Perfect. Build your own lineup of traditions that actually fit your personality: Movies & Mashed Potatoes Night - yes, that’s the theme. No, it doesn’t make sense. But neither does December sunset at 4 p.m., so just grab a spoon and embrace the chaos. Sweatpants mandatory, emotional stability optional.
Seattle Lights & Frights Tour - Drive through the most over-decorated streets in Magnolia and Queen Anne. Rank the displays by wattage, irony, and emotional damage.
The Solstice Bonfire - If the weather cooperates (ha), head to Discovery Park and
welcome the return of daylight with cider and questionable fire safety.
Ugly Sweater Power Hour - At home or at a dive bar. Timer goes off every 15 minutes: new beverage, new story.
“Gift Yourself Day.” You, a blanket, Thai takeout, and the smug satisfaction of skipping I-5 traffic.
Puzzle & Prosecco Night - For those who secretly enjoy both chaos and control.
Seattle Swap Night - Host a “regift party.” Everyone brings one unopened candle or random mug from last year; trade freely, judge harshly.
BONUS: A NEW PACIFIC NORTHWEST HOLIDAY CHILDREN’S
SONG
And here’s a refreshing break from that red-nosed whiny beast that’s been clogging the airwaves since Grandma’s Jell-O salad was still considered cutting-edge kitchen technology. A new local gem called Bigfoot Christmas is stepping in with a cozy, Cascadian twist on the holiday playlist. Written by Portland-area songwriters (we’ll forgive them), it brings a little Pacific Northwest charm to the season.
Picture twinkling lights in the rain, ferry horns in the fog, and a big, friendly Sasquatch hanging lights instead of guiding sleighs.
It’s sweet without the syrup, catchy without the carol fatigue - the kind of tune that could melt even a Seattle Grinch’s heart. Or at least get you humming while you top off your coffee and side-eye the next Mariah remix.
THE FINAL LESSON FROM YOUR LOCAL GRINCH
The holidays don’t have to be merry, bright, or performative. They can be quiet, weird, indulgent, or just fine - and that’s more than enough.
So, light your candle, pour your wine, and give yourself permission to enjoy Seattle in its truest form: damp, over-caffeinated, and quietly sarcastic. Because deep down, Seattle Grinches don’t hate Christmas - they just hate small talk in the rain.
Savvy Senior: Understanding Social Security Spousal Benefits
By Jim Miller
Dear Savvy Senior,
How do Social Security spousal benefits work? My wife, who’s approaching age 62, has had a few small-paying jobs over the years, but spent most of her time as a homemaker. What is she entitled to?
—Primary Breadwinner
Dear Breadwinner,
Spousal benefit questions are among the most frequently asked and confusing parts of Social Security. The rules that govern qualifying and claiming are knotty, and there are many exceptions. But understanding how these benefits work is crucial for maximizing your family’s retirement income. Here’s what you should know.
WHAT ARE SPOUSAL BENEFITS?
Social Security spousal benefits are designed to provide retirement income to spouses who either didn’t work or worked sporadically/part-time and earned significantly less than their spouses over their working lifetime. A stay-athome parent is a good example of a spousal benefit recipient.
WHO’S QUALIFIES?
To qualify for spousal benefits, you and your wife must meet three conditions: Your wife must be at least age 62; you must be married
for a year or more; and you must already be collecting your retirement benefits.
Different rules apply for exspouses. Ex-spouses (if you were married for at least 10 years and are not remarried) can receive a spousal benefit based on an exspouse’s record even if your ex has not yet filed for their own benefits, but your ex must be age 62 or older.
“A stay-at-home parent is a good example of a spousal benefit recipient.”
HOW MUCH ARE SPOUSAL BENEFITS?
The amount your wife would get for spousal benefits will depend on your earning’s history and her claiming age.
The maximum spousal benefit is 50 percent of your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA), which is that amount you’re entitled to at full retirement age benefit (FRA). But your wife will only get that much if she waits until her full retirement age to file, which is 67 if she was born in 1960 or later. Unfortunately, spousal benefits cannot be increased by her waiting
beyond FRA, but they are reduced by taking them early. So, for example, if your wife were to start collecting her spousal benefits at age 62 (the earliest possible age), she would collect only 32.5 percent of your PIA.
To calculate exactly how much your wife’s spousal benefits would be reduced by taking them before her FRA see SSA.gov/OACT/ quickcalc/spouse.html.
You also need to know that because spousal benefits are based on your PIA, even if you (the primary earner) retire early, before you reach your FRA, your wife’s spousal benefit will not be reduced. Just as they will not increase if you delay claiming your benefits beyond your FRA.
You should also note that if your wife worked and is entitled to benefits on her own work record, but it’s less than what she’s entitled to as a spouse, Social Security will pay her the higher of the two amounts, but not both.
SURVIVOR BENEFITS
In addition to spousal benefits Social Security also pays survivor benefits to spouses and ex-spouses starting at age 60 (50 if disabled).
So, if your wife outlives you, she’ll be able to switch from her spousal benefits to survivor benefits and receive a higher payment. Survivor benefits range between 71.5 and 100 percent of the deceased’s benefit, based on your

wife’s age when she claims. There is, however, one exception. Surviving spouses and ex-spouses that are caring for a child (or children) of the deceased worker, and they are under age 16 or disabled, are eligible to receive 75 percent of the worker’s benefit amount at any age.
ONLINE CALCULATORS
There are several online calculators that can help you and your wife figure out the best time to claim your benefits to ensure you
get the highest possible lifetime payout. One that’s completely free to use OpenSocialSecurity.com. Or for a more thorough analysis use MaximizeMySocialSecurity. com. This tool, which costs $49 for a year, will run what-if scenarios based on your circumstances to find your best strategy.

Herb -Roasted Turkey
2. Position a rack in the bottom third of the oven and preheat the oven to 450 F. Sprinkle the main cavity of the turkey with salt and pepper. Place the whole sprigs of parsley, rosemary and thyme and the sage leaves into the cavity. Add the lemon, 4 shallot halves and half of the garlic cloves.
3. Starting at the neck end, carefully slide a hand between the skin and the breast meat to loosen the skin. Spread 3 tablespoons of the herb butter over the breast meat under the skin. Tuck the wing tips under the skin, and tie the legs together to hold the shape. Season the turkey generously all over with salt and pepper.
4. Place the turkey on a wire rack set in a large roasting pan. Rub 4 tablespoons of the herb butter over the turkey. Roast about 30 minutes, until golden brown, and reduce the heat to 350 F. Baste the turkey with 1/2 cup of the broth. Cover only the breast area with a sheet of heavyduty aluminum foil. Scatter the remaining shallots and garlic cloves in the pan around the turkey.
brown and a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 165 F. Transfer the turkey to a platter and brush with 1 tablespoon of the herb butter. Tent it loosely with foil and let it rest for 20 minutes before carving.
6. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the shallots and garlic from the roasting pan to a plate. Transfer the pan juices to a medium bowl, then skim off and discard the fat. Set the pan over two burners on mediumhigh heat. Deglaze
Instructions:
1. In a small bowl, combine the butter, chopped parsley, chopped rosemary, chopped thyme, chopped sage, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
5. Continue to roast the turkey for about 11/2 hours, basting with 1/2 cup of broth every 30 minutes. Remove the foil from the turkey breast. Continue to roast the turkey, basting with pan juices every 20 minutes, about 1 hour longer, until it’s golden

Light Rail to Federal Way Launches December 6:
A
New Era for South King County Commuters
The countdown is on. In just over two weeks, Sound Transit’s long-anticipated Federal Way Link Extension will officially open, adding 7.8 miles and three new stations to the 1 Line - at Kent Des Moines, Star Lake, and Federal Way Downtown. Service to the new stations begins Saturday, December 6.
Sound Transit has entered the final phase of testing known as simulated service, where trains run full schedules between Angle Lake and Federal Way Downtown without passengers. Riders will continue boarding and exiting at Angle Lake Station until service officially launches.
“Thanks to taxpayers, Sound Transit staff, and hard-working contractors, we are another step closer to celebrating this important regional milestone,” said Dave Somers, Snohomish County Executive and Sound Transit Board Chair.

King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer likened the project’s completion to a modern holiday story: “The Federal Way Link Extension is our modern-day Polar Express - the power of holding on to the belief that it can be done!”
Councilmember De’Sean Quinn highlighted the project’s broader impact on the region: “Transit equals access to opportunity. The Federal Way Link Extension means more choices for South King County residents on where to live, where to work and where to play.”
Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine noted that the
system’s growth continues: “With the start of simulated service, we are that much closer to opening these three new stations. We hope you’ll join us as we cut the ribbon on Dec. 6 for the latest expansion of clean, green light rail servicewith more coming soon.”
To help passengers prepare, Sound Transit has launched an informational site at soundtransit.org/southkinglink featuring details about opening-day events, trip planning, and project alerts.
OPENING DAY CELEBRATION
Festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, with train
service to the new stations starting at 11 a.m. Each of the three new stations will host community-led activities, exhibits, and entertainment organized by local partners including The Success
Foundation, Project Feast, and The Federal Way Black Collective. Visitors can also participate in Discover.Stamp.Win! a scavengerstyle activity across the new stations with prizes up for grabs.
