Farewell to the Old Grandstand: Memorial Stadium’s Final Column Comes Down

Staff Report

On Saturday, November 8, the last grandstand column of Seattle’s Memorial Stadium came down, marking the most visible milestone yet in the stadium’s long-awaited redevelopment. With that final piece of concrete removed, the postwar structure that has stood at the heart of the Seattle Center campus for nearly eight decades is giving way to a new era.

According to the project team, the north stadium back wall and base will be gradually removed over the coming weeks, but Saturday’s demolition represented “the most visual demolition opportunity remaining.” The event closed a monumental chapter for a venue that has hosted generations of Seattle athletes, students, and fans.

Memorial Stadium was built in 1947 by Seattle Public Schools on the site of the old Civic Field. It was conceived as a living memorial to honor nearly 800 Seattle students and alumni who lost their lives in World War II. Their names are engraved on the memorial wall

at the east end of the field and will be preserved in the new design.

For much of its life, the stadium served as the home field for countless high school football games, marching band showcases, and community events. In the 1960s, it briefly hosted concerts and festivals during the Century 21 Exposition and became a versatile civic space for decades to follow.

In recent years, its most poignant use may have come

during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Seattle Public Schools shifted graduation ceremonies to Memorial Stadium to allow for outdoor, socially distanced celebrations. Families spread out across the grandstands while students crossed the stage under open skies. The adaptation preserved a rite of passage during an unprecedented time.

The stadium’s removal is being handled with respect for that

layered history. Crews began dismantling the south grandstand earlier this fall, followed by the north. Saturday’s demolition of the final column officially marked the end of the old seating structure. The remaining north wall and base will be taken down in stages, and the site will soon transition into foundation and utility preparation work.

Despite the visible demolition, the project’s planners emphasize

that this is a renewal, not an erasure. The Memorial Wall will remain in place throughout construction, and the site design integrates it into a new plaza of remembrance, ensuring that the names and legacy it represents stay at the forefront of the stadium’s identity.

The Memorial Stadium Redevelopment Project, a partnership between Seattle Public Schools, the City of Seattle, and the One Roof Partnership, will replace the aging structure with a modern, multi-use facility designed for school and community events. The new stadium will seat about 6,500 people, expandable to 8,000 for larger performances, and will feature improved accessibility, flexible programming, and a design that integrates with the Seattle Center campus. With an estimated budget of $140 million and a projected completion in 2027, crews will continue site preparation in the coming months by clearing remaining walls, relocating utilities, and beginning foundation work.

SPU Expands Access to Special Item Pickup for a Cleaner, Safer Seattle

Submitted

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is rolling out an expansion of the Special Item Pickup service beginning in April 2026, making it easier for customers to safely dispose of items that are hard-to-recycle or require special handling.

Currently, SPU customers can schedule on-demand pickup for items such as batteries, small electronics, mattresses, and appliances. While this service is available today for a small fee, the new program will introduce one free annual pickup as a benefit to SPU residential customers to help make proper disposal simpler, safer, and more convenient. Each year, SPU customers will be able to request one free collection of a small box of special items (two cubic feet or smaller, up to 60 pounds), plus one bag of household batteries. Properly disposing of these materials will help prevent transfer station fires caused by batteries and divert them from the landfill. In 2027, SPU will expand the service to include large electronic items and bulky furniture, which will provide even more ways for residents to responsibly recycle, prevent illegal dumping, and support a cleaner and safer city for everyone.

Special Free Annual Pickup

This is part of SPU’s broader effort to expand access to recycling and disposal options across Seattle. The utility is exploring ways to make the service available to more customers, including residents in multifamily buildings, and will share additional details as program design and operations evolve.

For customers who need to dispose of additional items beyond the free annual pickup, SPU will continue to offer on-call, fee-based pickups as well

as convenient drop-off options at SPU transfer stations, where many special items can be recycled or disposed of safely for a small fee.

“ The updated rates will take effect April

1, 2026”

By making it easier to properly dispose of electronics, batteries, and other special materials, this program supports SPU’s goals of protecting worker safety, reducing environmental risks, and keeping Seattle’s neighborhoods clean and litter-free.

This expansion was authorized by Mayor Bruce Harrell and the Seattle City Council under Council Bill 121051,

which set new solid waste rates for 2026–2028. “Seattle Public Utilities continues to align our solid waste system with the city’s values of equity, affordability, and environmental stewardship,” said SPU General Manager Andrew Lee. “This new rate path ensures we can maintain reliable, high-quality service while introducing programs that make proper disposal simpler and more accessible for everyone.”

The updated rates will take effect April 1, 2026, with more information on how to schedule your free annual Special Item Pickup to be shared as implementation approaches. If customers would like to schedule a Special Item Pickup now, they can see more information including rates on our page at www.seattle.gov/utilities/special-items.

Defrosting the Seattle Freeze: One Craft, Sip, and Story at a Time

Seattle, the city where eye contact is a bold move and small talk is practically an Olympic event. The clouds have officially rolled in, your seasonal latte has more foam than enthusiasm, and the annual migration from patios to pajamas is complete. But before you resign yourself to three months of introvert hibernation, here’s a reminder: we have indoor communities that don’t require emotional frostbite to join.

Whether your vibe is “paint and sip” or “sip and tell,” the city’s got options that might just make you forget it’s 47 degrees and damp FRESH GROUND STORIES: WHERE STRANGERS OVERSHARE SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO

Every third Thursday at the Swedish Club, real humans gather (gross, we know) to tell true stories at Fresh Ground Stories, a live event that’s equal parts stand-up therapy and plot twist roulette. Think The Moth, but with more flannel and fewer people pretending they don’t own a Subaru.

You can show up, grab a drink, and listen to tales about breakups, breakthroughs, and that one time someone moved to Seattle “for the summer” and it’s been seven years. It’s storytelling without the Zoom fatigue - and yes, the audience actually laughs.

THE ORDER OF THE ARGENT LION ART GROUP: BECAUSE ART IS CHEAPER THAN THERAPY

Every Sunday, the Order of the Argent Lion gathers at Coffeemind for a caffeine-fueled art jam that’s part sketch session, part social hour, and part creative therapy. You’ll find regulars with paintbrushes, crochet hooks,

sketchbooks, and sometimes just good intentions. Anything that gets the imagination moving is welcome.

The mood is relaxed and friendly, more like an adult playdate with pencils than an art school critique. Nobody is here to judge whether your masterpiece looks like a potato or your scarf has taken three winters to finish. The goal is to create something, share a cup of coffee, and have a good conversation that isn’t about work.

If you have been meaning to get back into a creative habit, consider this your weekly nudge. Because if you were going to finish that halfdone project on your couch, you already would have. At Coffeemind, you will find caffeine, community, and a perfect excuse to call it art.

“we have indoor communities that don’t require emotional frostbite to join”

QUARTER LIFE CRAFTERS: FOR PEOPLE WHOSE HOBBIES ARE 40% THERAPY, 60% EXCUSES

This rotating group pops up monthly in various Seattle cafés, inviting you to dust off that unfinished cross-stitch or half-knit scarf you swore you’d finish in 2022. The Quarter Life Crafters are living proof that community is built on the holy trinity of caffeine, glue guns, and mutual procrastination. Your living-room craft bin is lonely. Show it some solidarity.

No artistic talent required - just bring your project and a willingness to share in collective chaos.

SEATTLE ARTS, CRAFTS & DRAUGHTS: BECAUSE BEER MAKES EVERY HOBBY BETTER

If your creative process thrives on a little liquid courage, Seattle Arts, Crafts & Draughts might be your soulmate. This group gathers at local taprooms (Ballard, usually) where people drink beer and craft at the same time - which is either genius or a mild safety hazard, depending on your hand-eye coordination.

It’s the kind of place where you can say, “I’m working on my art,” while also ordering another IPA. Picasso would approve.

WET CLAY CAFÉ: SPIN, SIP, AND TRY NOT TO DROP IT

Phinney’s Wet Clay Café is the ceramic studio of your Pinterest dreams- paint-and-sip meets pottery wheel therapy. Whether you’re sculpting your inner peace or just trying to make something that won’t collapse like your New Year’s resolutions, it’s messy, meditative, and surprisingly social.

Plus, you get to leave with a handmade mug to remind you of your triumph every morning. (Or to quietly hide in the cabinet if it didn’t turn out so great.)

SEATTLE WINE MEETUP AT LOCUS

WINES: SIP HAPPENS, MAKE FRIENDS ANYWAY

If crafting isn’t your jam but Cabernet is, head to Locus Wines in Pioneer Square for their Seattle Wine Meetup. This crowd knows their tannins and their trivia.

Tastings, pairings, and events happen regularly - and you’ll leave knowing at least three new adjectives for “red.”

It’s like adult summer camp, but instead of bunk beds and bug spray, you get Pinot Noir and conversation that doesn’t require shouting over espresso machines.

NINE HATS SOCIAL CLUB: THE CLASSY COUSIN OF “WINE AND WHINE”

For the slightly more polished wine enthusiast, Nine Hats Social Club offers tastings, trivia nights,

and private events that pair networking with Sauvignon Blanc. Join the club, and suddenly “I’m in a social group” sounds way more impressive than “I have a Costco membership.”

Their SoDo tasting room is sleek, modern, and blessedly warm - a perfect hideout for anyone seeking a buzz and a break from seasonal affective solitude. Because if you’re going to drink wine, might as well feel like you’re part of something that sounds classy.

MORAL OF THE STORY

So, there you have it - seven indoor places where you can replace “doom-scrolling in my hoodie” with “actively showing up in public while still staying dry.” Rain will still fall, the “Seattle Freeze” will still whisper that you should just stay home, but you’ll have better company and maybe a handmade mug or a new friend by the end.

The rain’s not stopping - but maybe, finally, you can stop freezing.

Savvy Senior: Best Online Will Makers

Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend some good online resources for writing a simple will? I’m 70 and divorced and want to get my affairs organized, but I hate paying a high-priced attorney fee if I can do it myself.

—Don’t Have Much

Dear Don’t,

Having a last will and testament is an important document to have because it ensures that your money and property will be distributed to the people you want to receive it after your death. Currently, fewer than one-third of American adults have prepared a will.

If you die without a will, your estate will be settled in accordance with state law. Details vary by state, but assets typically are distributed using a hierarchy of survivors. Assets go first to a spouse, then to children, then your siblings, and so on.

You also need to be aware that certain accounts take precedence over a will. If you

jointly own a home or a bank account, for example, the house, and the funds in the account, will go to the joint holder, even if your will directs otherwise. Similarly, retirement accounts and life insurance policies are distributed to the beneficiaries you designate, so it is important to keep them up to date too.

ONLINE WILL MAKERS

If you have a simple, straightforward estate and an uncomplicated family situation, writing your own will – with the help of a good online will making program – is a viable alternative to hiring an attorney and much cheaper. Like tax software, these online tools will guide you through a series of questions and will insert your answers into a will for you, and it usually takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish.

Some of the highest-rated do-it-yourself options include the Quicken WillMaker & Trust 2025 downloadable software (WillMaker.com) that starts at $109 and is valid in every state except Louisiana; Trust & Will (TrustandWill.com) which charges

$199 for an individual will-based estate plan; and LegalZoom (LegalZoom.com), which offers will-based estate plans for $129 or $149 if you’d like assistance from an independent attorney.

Or, if that’s more than you’re able or willing to pay, two good options that will let you make your will for free are FreeWill.com or DoYourOwnWill.com.

WHEN TO HIRE A LAWYER

If you have considerable financial assets or a complex family situation, like a blended family or a child with special needs, it would be smart for you to seek professional advice. An experienced lawyer can make sure you cover all your bases, which can help avoid family confusion and squabbles after you’re gone.

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA.org) and the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC.org) websites are good resources that have directories to help you find someone in your area.

Costs will vary depending on your location

and the complexity of your situation, but you can expect to pay somewhere between $200 and $1,000 to get your will made. To help you save, shop around and get price quotes from several different firms. And before you meet with an attorney, make a detailed list of your assets and accounts to help make your visit more efficient.

WHERE TO STORE IT?

Once your will is written, the best place to keep it is either in a fireproof safe or file cabinet at home, in a safe deposit box in your bank or online. But make sure your executor knows where it is and has access to it. Or, if a professional prepares your will, keep the original document at your lawyer’s office. Also, be sure to update your will if your family or financial circumstances change, or if you move to another state.

Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

Seattle Mayoral Race Still Too Close to Call as Harrell, Wilson Await Final Ballots

The Seattle mayoral race remains a nail-biter as thousands of ballots continue to be tallied Monday morning, with neither candidate yet securing a decisive edge.

As of the latest count, incumbent Bruce Harrell leads with about 116,435 votes, or 50.7 percent, while challenger Katie Wilson trails with roughly 112,135 votes, or 48.9 percent. Election officials estimate more than 50,000 ballots remain uncounted.

The gap between the two candidates has narrowed steadily in recent tallies. On Friday, Wilson gained ground, winning nearly 55 percent of that day’s newly counted ballots compared to Harrell’s 45 percent. Electionanalysis firm Decision Desk HQ has since retracted its earlier projection of a Harrell victory, citing a larger number of uncounted ballots than previously expected and historical trends showing that late-counted votes often favor progressive candidates.

Harrell, Seattle’s incumbent mayor, is seeking a second term. If he wins, he would

be the first Seattle mayor to be re-elected since Greg Nickels in 2005. He has emphasized his experience in city government and a steady approach to tackling public safety, housing affordability, and transportation.

Wilson, a progressive community organizer and co-founder of the Transit Riders Union, has built her campaign on promises of transformative change. Her platform calls for expanded affordable housing, stronger tenant protections, increased transit investment, and new approaches to homelessness.

Several factors contribute to the uncertainty of the race. Seattle’s mail-in voting system allows ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted afterward, and late-arriving ballots have historically leaned progressive. The margin separating the candidates remains just under two percentage points, leaving the outcome within reach if Wilson continues to outperform in late counts. Analysts also caution that the final result will depend on where the remaining ballots originate, as some areas of the city have shown stronger support for Harrell while others favor Wilson.

Beyond the individual campaigns, the race may signal a broader political shift in Seattle. A Wilson victory would represent a win for the city’s progressive wing and could reshape future policy debates. A Harrell win would reinforce voter preference for continuity and experience during a period of economic strain and public-safety challenges.

As of Monday morning, with tens of thousands of ballots yet to be counted and no winner declared, Seattle’s mayoral contest remains one of the tightest and most closely watched races in Washington. Harrell’s lead is narrow, Wilson’s momentum is real, and the city continues to wait for clarity on who will guide its next chapter.

Major Earthquake Rattles Seafloor Near Underwater Volcano Off the West Coast

Apowerful earthquake struck just miles from one of the Pacific Ocean’s most closely watched volcanoesa deep-sea giant that scientists say is likely preparing to erupt for the first time in a decade.

TREMOR NEAR AXIAL SEAMOUNT

The quake occurred off the Oregon coast near Axial Seamount, an undersea volcano about 300 miles west of Cannon Beach and roughly a mile beneath the surface. Early readings placed the quake’s magnitude in the upper-5 range, strong enough to be recorded by seismographs across the Pacific Northwest.

Scientists at Oregon State University’s College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences - who have studied Axial for years - confirmed the location falls within a cluster of tremors that began in late October. More than a thousand micro-earthquakes have been detected in the area within a single 24-hour period, suggesting magma movement beneath the seafloor.

A VOLCANO UNDER PRESSURE

Axial Seamount isn’t new to scientists or the sea floor. It last erupted in 2015, and previous activity was recorded in 1998 and 2011.

Instruments anchored to the ocean floor show that the volcano’s surface is “inflating like

a balloon,” expanding several inches each month as magma accumulates below. That gradual swelling usually precedes an eruption - though in this case, any eruption would likely stay underwater, with lava solidifying long before reaching the surface.

“It’s one of the most predictable volcanoes on the planet,” said marine geologist Bill Chadwick, who has monitored Axial for decades. “We’re watching it breathe - deflating when it erupts, and slowly reinflating afterward.”

COULD THIS QUAKE TRIGGER AN ERUPTION?

At this point, scientists are cautious.

The earthquake may have been caused by normal tectonic movement along the Juan de Fuca Ridge - where the Pacific and North American Plates pull apart - or it may be related to magma movement within the volcano itself.

Either way, experts say the risk to people on land is minimal. Because Axial lies deep beneath the ocean and far offshore, even a sizable eruption would not be expected to generate a damaging tsunami or visible surface disturbance.

Still, researchers are paying close attention to whether this quake signals the volcano’s next eruption cycle. “Every event adds to our understanding of how magma interacts with the crust,” Chadwick said. “It’s like listening to a volcano’s heartbeat.”

WHY THIS MATTERS TO THE NORTHWEST

While the undersea eruption itself is unlikely to threaten coastal communities, it’s a reminder that the Cascadia Subduction Zone - the offshore fault running from Northern California to British Columbiaremains one of North America’s most active and least predictable seismic systems. Events like this show how interconnected the region’s geology is: the same plate movements that feed Axial Seamount’s

also store the stress that can one day unleash a major coastal earthquake.

For residents of Washington and Oregon, it’s a good time to revisit emergency plans, refresh earthquake kits, and make sure communication lines are ready in the event of stronger seismic activity closer to shore.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The undersea monitoring network known as the Regional Cabled Array will continue watching Axial Seamount for

pressure changes, seismic swarms, and deformation of the seafloor - all potential signs that magma is rising.

If an eruption does occur, it will most likely create new lava flows across the seafloor, expanding the oceanic crust by a few square miles.

Scientists say that while such eruptions reshape the ocean floor, they also expand our understanding of the dynamic forces shaping the Pacific Northwest from below.

Trucks Pose Danger Year-Round - Winter Weather Only Makes It Worse

As winter descends on the Puget Sound region, Washington drivers are once again facing slick roads, fog, and unpredictable weather. But safety experts say that while rain and ice make accidents more likely, driving near large trucks is dangerous in any season — even on clear, dry days.

THE YEAR-ROUND RISK

Every year, more than 4,000 Americans die in crashes involving large trucks, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. While winter conditions raise the risk of skids and jackknifes, many of the most catastrophic collisions happen in good weather — when speed, impatience, or blind spots become deadly.

“People assume it’s just ice or rain that cause these crashes,” said one Washington State Patrol trooper, “but most of the serious truck collisions we see happen on sunny days when drivers follow too closely or merge too aggressively.”

Large trucks weigh up to 30 times more than passenger vehicles and need far more distance to stop. Their drivers can’t see you in the blind zones immediately beside, behind, or in front of their rigs. Even a quick lane change in front of a semi can put a car squarely in the “no-zone,” where it’s invisible to the truck driver.

RECENT CRASHES HIGHLIGHT

THE RISK

In the past month, truck-related crashes have stretched from the coast to the Cascades:

• Olympia (Oct. 24) – A semi hauling two empty trailers jackknifed on wet pavement along I-5, closing multiple

southbound lanes for hours.

No injuries were reported, but traffic backups lasted nearly half the day.

• SR-18 near Snoqualmie (Oct. 29)

– A semi-truck crashed into a tree just after sunrise, injuring one and blocking the mountain highway for much of the morning.

• Tacoma Dome (Oct. 14) – A tanker truck collided with a pickup on I-5, creating significant backups during the morning commute.

• Reardan (Oct. 24) – A garbage truck and a passenger car collided head-on, leaving one dead and several lanes closed for investigation.

Even in moderate weather, the consequences of a single misjudgment near a truck are often severe.

HOW SEATTLE, TACOMA, AND EVERETT DRIVERS ARE AFFECTED

The I-5 corridor through the Puget Sound is one of the most heavily trafficked freight routes in the country. Hundreds of commercial trucks pass through daily, sharing space with commuters in compact sedans, delivery vans, and SUVs. Add on steep grades, standing rainwater, and tight merge lanes — and the result is a perfect storm of risk.

Everett and Tacoma see particularly high truck density near the ports, while Seattle’s I-90 and I-5 interchanges frequently become chokepoints for both freight and passenger vehicles. Even brief slowdowns can turn dangerous when large trucks can’t brake or maneuver as quickly as smaller vehicles.

SAFE DRIVING AROUND TRUCKS — IN ANY WEATHER

Stay visible. If you can’t see the truck driver’s mirrors, they can’t

see you. Avoid lingering beside or directly behind a semi.

Keep your distance. Always maintain at least four seconds of following distance — more on wet or icy pavement.

Don’t cut in close. When merging in front of a truck, make sure you can see the entire front of the truck in your mirror before changing lanes.

Avoid distractions. Many fatal truck crashes happen in clear weather when drivers are texting, speeding, or tailgating.

Watch for wind and spray. Even on sunny days, large trucks create air turbulence that can push lighter vehicles sideways, especially at highway speeds.

Be patient. Trucks accelerate and brake slowly for safety — not to frustrate you. Aggressive driving around them often causes the very delays everyone’s trying to avoid.

Help traffic move safely. Don’t brake suddenly or “rubberneck” at crashes. Smooth driving keeps traffic flowing and reduces secondary collisions.

BOTTOM LINE

Driving around trucks is never risk-free. Bad weather can make things worse, but even on a bright day in Everett or Tacoma, a single wrong move near a fully loaded semi can change lives in seconds.

As rain and winter fog return to Puget Sound, drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert, and give trucks the space they need.

Because whether it’s snow, sunshine, or a foggy I-5 morning — the safest thing you can do around a big rig is respect its size, its limits, and the people sharing the road with it.
