Cruisers’ Playoff Bid Fades After Late Steilacoom Comeback

Eatonville’s playoff hopes slipped away under the Friday night lights at Blair Taylor Field, undone by a fourth-quarter collapse that saw Steilacoom score 21 unanswered points to win 41-31.

It was a must-win for the Cruisers, who entered the game fighting to stay in postseason contention. For three quarters, Eatonville held the upper hand forcing turnovers, capitalizing on short fields, and controlling the tempo. But when the Sentinels caught fire late, Eatonville couldn’t match the surge.

“We are proud of our team’s effort. We are looking forward to a final chance to compete together Thursday at Orting,” Eatonville head coach Gavin Kralik said.

Eatonville wasted no time making an impact. On Steilacoom’s opening drive, Jackson Doll pounced on a loose ball at the Sentinel 43-yard line. Nine plays later, quarterback Cole Fowler finished the short drive with a one-yard sneak into the end zone for an early 7-0 lead.

Steilacoom answered late in the first quarter when quarterback Titus Kaeka found receiver Evan DiPetrillo on a fourth-and-goal from the 7. The extra point tied

the game 7-7 with 3:11 left in the first.

The Cruisers struck again early in the second quarter — another Fowler sneak from the

one — regaining the lead at 14-7.

The Eatonville defense then forced a turnover on downs at its own 10-yard line, stalling Steilacoom’s momentum.

But the Sentinels responded with a big play: a 77-yard pass completion to Noah Maxwell set up a one-yard quarterback keeper by Kaeka to knot the score again at 14-14.

Eatonville had one last chance before halftime. After forcing a punt with under 30 seconds remaining, they took over at the Steilacoom 39 and managed to grab a slim 17-14 advantage before the break.

The second half started with promise for Eatonville. After forcing a fumble deep in Sentinel territory, Derek Wood recovered at the Steilacoom 6-yard line. Fowler punched it in again — his third rushing touchdown of the night — giving the Cruisers a 24-14 lead midway through the third quarter.

Steilacoom answered with a quick scoring drive, but a missed extra point kept Eatonville in front, 24-20. The Cruisers then extended their lead when Fowler connected with receiver Amari Samuel on a 14-yard touchdown strike, putting Eatonville ahead 31-20 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter.

Golding Leads Eatonville Tennis at SPSL Tournament

The Eatonville High School boys tennis team fought through rain delays, long rallies, and tough draws during the South Puget Sound League (SPSL) Tournament held Wednesday and Thursday at Clover Park High School and the Lakewood Racquet & Sport Club.

Led by senior Jacob Golding, the Cruisers delivered strong performances across both singles and doubles play, marking another step forward for the program.

Golding, seeded No. 2, opened the tournament with back-to-back straight-set victories on Wednesday — 6-0, 6-0 over Jackson Mohn of Washington High and 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) over Axel Cabiles of Clover Park.

On Thursday, he faced the league’s toughest competition, falling 5-7, 3-6 to eventual tournament champion Giovanni Rosales of Washington and 6-1, 1-6, 1-6 to Aries Ramos of Franklin Pierce after a one-hour rain delay midway through the third set.

The strong showing earned Golding the No. 5 seed at next week’s District Tournament, where he’ll face the Olympic League’s No. 4 player at the Kitsap Tennis Center in Bremerton.

“Jacob played with a lot of grit and determination,” said head coach Maryann Baker. “He’s incredibly consistent, which led to long points with the top three players in the league. He’ll continue to be a top singles competitor at Districts.”

Four singles players from Districts will move on to the 2A State Tournament in the spring.

Senior Carl Lucas, the tournament’s No. 11 seed, showed resilience throughout his draw. After dropping his first match to Elias Yi of Steilacoom 3-6, 4-6, he rebounded with a 6-0, 6-4 win over teammate Nate Diamond.

On Thursday, Lucas rolled past No. 5 seed Riley Brunk of Foss 6-0, 6-0 before falling 3-6, 0-6 to Franklin Pierce’s Harrison Ha.

“Carl’s been to Districts before — in singles when we were 1A and last year in 2A doubles,” Baker said. “That experience really showed in how he adjusted and competed.”

Sophomore Nate Diamond, seeded No. 14, faced a challenging opening draw. He fell 2-6, 2-6 to eventual champion Rosales and 0-6, 2-6 to Lucas in his first singles appearance.

Eatonville earned a third singles entry this year after finishing tied for third place in the league — a milestone achievement for the program.

“This was Nate’s first-ever singles match,” Baker said. “He performed well in a tough spot, and we’re excited to have him back next year. He’ll continue to be an asset to this team.”

Eatonville’s top doubles pair, Jackson Rockey and Ethan Stogsdill, entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed. They opened with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over White River’s Jacob Jamieson and Lonnys Valvoda before a rain delay disrupted their second match.

The duo led 4-0 in the second set against Steilacoom’s Jett Folino and Ryan Pham

when rain halted play for nearly two hours. After the delay, momentum shifted and Eatonville fell 4-6, 5-7.

On Thursday, Rockey and Stogsdill bounced back with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Fife’s Nathan Chang and Kolten Clary before losing 5-7, 1-6 to Franklin Pierce’s Edan Le and Milan Demikov.

“Their chemistry was really strong,” Baker said. “Jackson’s crosscourt forehands and dominant serves were huge, and Ethan’s athleticism and aggressiveness at the net gave them an edge in every match.”

Eatonville’s second doubles team, Steven Haas and Blake Pool, faced tough competition as the No. 10 seed, losing 3-6, 1-6 to Washington’s Seth Dove and Bryce Spencer and 0-6, 3-6 to Franklin Pierce’s Ryan Armstrong and Brandon Liwanag.

“Steven and Blake played long, grinding points,” Baker said. “Blake was steady at the baseline, and Steven mixed things up with drop shots and deep crosscourt balls.”

Another Eatonville doubles pair, Gui Vilahverde-Araujo and Holden Hetland, made their debut as a team and nearly advanced past their opening qualifier. They fell just short in a tight match, 5-7, 7-5, 7-10, to Franklin Pierce’s Armstrong and Liwanag.

“Even though it was their first time playing together, Gui and Holden were very competitive,” Baker said. “They worked well as a team, moved quickly, and dominated points with their serves.”

With Golding advancing and several underclassmen gaining postseason experience, Baker said the team continues to make strides each year.

“This group showed heart and toughness across the board,” she said. “Every player improved this season, and that’s what makes this team so rewarding to coach.”

The District Tournament begins Thursday at the Kitsap Tennis Center in Bremerton, where Golding will look to punch his ticket to the 2A State Tournament.

Savvy Senior: How to Stave Off Cognitive Decline as You Age

Dear Savvy Senior,

Are there any proven strategies to preventing cognitive decline? I have a family history of dementia and worry about my own memory and cognitive abilities as I grow older.

—Forgetful at 55

Dear Forgetful,

For most people, starting in their fifties and sixties, the brain’s ability to remember names, multi-task or learn something new starts declining. While our genes (which we can’t control) play a key role in determining our cognitive aging, our general health (which we do have some control over) plays a big factor too.

Here are some healthy lifestyle strategies – recommended by medical experts – you can employ that can help stave off cognitive loss and maybe even build a stronger brain.

MANAGE HEALTH PROBLEMS: Studies have shown that cognitive problems are related to health conditions, like diabetes, heart disease and even depression. So, if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes you need to treat them with lifestyle changes and medication (if necessary) and get them under control. And if you have a history of depression, talk to your doctor about treatment options.

EXERCISE:

Aerobic exercise increases blood flow to all parts of your body, including your brain, to keep the brain cells well nourished. So, choose an aerobic activity you enjoy like walking, cycling, dancing, swimming, etc., that elevates your heart rate and do it for at least 30 to 40 minutes three times a week.

between seven and nine hours of sleep daily. If you have persistent problems sleeping, you need to identify and address the problem. Medications, late-night exercise and alcohol can interfere with sleep quality and length, as can arthritis pain, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome.

If you need help, make an appointment with a sleep specialist who will probably recommend an overnight diagnostic sleep test.

“mind challenging activities can help improve memory, and slow age-related mental decline”

CHALLENGE YOUR MIND:

Some research suggests that mind challenging activities can help improve memory, and slow age-related mental decline. But be aware that these activities consist of things you aren’t accustomed to doing. In other words, crossword puzzles aren’t enough to challenge your brain, if you’re already a regular puzzle doer. Instead, you need to pick up a new skill like learning to dance, play a musical instrument, study a new language or do math problems – something that’s challenging and a little outside your comfort zone.

Brain-training websites like Lumosity, Elevate and Peak are good mind exercising tools because they continually adapt to your skill level to keep you challenged.

Socializing and interacting with other people is another important way to stimulate the brain. So, make a point to reach out and stay connected to friends, family and neighbors. Join a club, take a class or even volunteer – anything that enhances your social life.

CHECK YOUR EYES AND EARS:

A growing body of evidence shows that vision and hearing loss, which affects brain stimulation, can also increase the risk of cognitive decline. So, get your eyes and ears checked regularly and treat any issues promptly.

REDUCE STRESS:

Some stress is good for the brain, but too much can be toxic. There’s evidence that things like mindfulness meditation, yoga and tai chi are all good ways to help reduce stress.

EAT HEALTHY:

A heart-healthy diet, like the Mediterranean diet, will also help protect the brain. A Mediterranean diet includes relatively little red meat and emphasizes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fish and shellfish, and nuts, olive oil and other healthy fats. Also keep processed foods and sweets to a minimum.

DON’T SMOKE OR DRINK:

Smoking and regular alcohol consumption both effect the brain in a negative way, so kick the habit if you smoke and, if you drink, do so only occasionally.

GET PLENTY OF SLEEP:

Quality, restful sleep contributes to brain health too. Typically, adults should get

Cruisers Shine on Senior Night and Show Resilience on the Road

The Eatonville Cruiser girls soccer team powered through one of their busiest and most competitive weeks of the season, posting two decisive home wins before splitting a pair of road matches to close out the stretch.

The Cruisers opened the week in dominant fashion Monday night with a 7–0 victory over Clover Park, continuing their winning streak and showing off their best form of the season. Eatonville controlled the match from start to finish, moving the ball crisply and maintaining relentless offensive pressure.

Linnea Lofgren got the scoring started in the 20th minute off an assist from Makenzie Ball, and Ball followed with a goal of her own eight minutes later with help from Kalli Olsen. Olsen added to the tally in the 37th minute on a setup from Lofgren, giving the Cruisers a commanding 3–0 lead at halftime. The offense stayed hot in the second half. Addison Johnson struck early in the 45th minute, followed by a pair of goals from Ryleigh Chopic in the 60th and 69th minutes, both showing Eatonville’s sharp attacking play. Olsen capped the night with her second goal in the 72nd minute, assisted by Chopic, sealing the 7–0 win.

Goalkeeper Savannah McCandless posted the clean sheet, needing just one save behind a rock-solid defense. It was a full-team performance that highlighted the Cruisers’

chemistry and depth as they rolled to another convincing victory.

The next night, the Cruisers carried that same energy into Senior Night, celebrating with a 2–0 win over Franklin Pierce. The evening honored Eatonville’s senior class and their leadership, and the team rose to the occasion.

After a scoreless first half despite six shots on goal, Eatonville finally broke through in the 60th minute when Chopic finished off a setup from Maddie Berube. Tagen Amaral added insurance in the 78th minute with a well-placed strike to seal the result.

McCandless stayed sharp in goal, making three saves in each half to secure her third straight shutout. The win capped off a memorable night for the seniors, who were celebrated by teammates and fans alike.

Eatonville’s momentum was tested the following evening in a tough road rematch with Franklin Pierce. Despite strong play and another composed effort, the Cruisers fell 2–1, ending their win streak.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the 21st minute, but Eatonville answered quickly as Kate Lindquist leveled the match in the 29th minute with a long-range strike from outside the box, assisted by Toryn Amaral.

The second half was tightly contested, but Franklin Pierce capitalized in the 60th minute to retake the lead. McCandless was outstanding once again, recording 12 saves — six in each half — to keep the Cruisers within reach.

Eatonville Dominates Senior Night, Tops Foss and Washington to Close Regular Season

Thursday night was a big one for the Eatonville High School girls swim team — the last home meet, the last regular-season competition, and, most importantly, Senior Night. The Cruisers made it count, sweeping both Foss and Washington in decisive fashion.

Eatonville rolled past Foss 113-22 and Washington 113-18, capping off their regular season with a commanding performance that showcased both their depth and leadership.

“It was such a special night,” said Head Coach Andrea Stammen. “It was our last home meet, our last regular-season meet, and Senior Night all rolled into one.”

The meet served as a tribute to the team’s three senior captains — Annika Howard, Charlotte Stumph, and Nicole Tomyn — each recognized for the unique qualities that have defined their leadership over the past four years.

“Annika’s dedication, Charlotte’s perseverance, and Nicole’s compassion have made this team stand out above others,” Stammen said. “They’ve set a standard for what teamwork and sportsmanship look like.”

Under their guidance, Eatonville has claimed the SPSL Sportsmanship Award, reached the state championships, set a new school record, and earned the title of academic state champions — all during their tenure.

The seniors weren’t just leaders out of the pool — they were key to Thursday’s dominant results. Howard took first place in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Tomyn captured first in the 100 freestyle, and Stumph anchored multiple winning relays.

Eatonville claimed first place in nine of the night’s eleven events:

• 200 Medley Relay: Nicole Tomyn, Grace King, Annika Howard, Clara Forsman

• 200 Free: Riley Frey

• 200 IM: Annika Howard

• 100 Fly: Annika Howard

• 100 Free: Nicole Tomyn

• 200 Free Relay: Charlotte Stumph, Clara

Despite the setback, Eatonville’s poise and competitive edge were evident in the hardfought loss.

The Cruisers closed out their busy week Friday at Cardinal Stadium against rival Orting. Looking to avenge an earlier loss,

Annika Howard, Nicole Tomyn

• 100 Back: Amelia Palfenier

• 100 Breast: Grace King

• 400 Free Relay: Riley Frey, Amelia Palfenier, Lily Hays, Charlotte Stumph

“Our seniors have been the heart of this team,” Stammen said. “They’ve helped build something lasting — not just wins, but a culture of support and excellence that will carry forward.”

With the regular season complete, the Cruisers now turn their focus to the postseason. They’ll compete next at the SPSL League Championship meet, hosted by Foss on Wednesday, October 29.

Eatonville battled throughout but came up just short in another 2–1 defeat. The Cruisers will wrap up their regular season Tuesday, Oct. 28, when they travel to face the Steilacoom Sentinels at Blair Taylor Field.

Eatonville Girls Win League Title, Boys Take Third

The Eatonville High School girls cross country team captured the 2A SPSL League Championship title Saturday, led by an individual victory from senior Grace Coonrod at Ft. Steilacoom Park.

The Cruiser girls secured the team championship with a dominant performance, placing three runners in the top five and all five scorers in the top 15. The Eatonville boys team also earned a spot on the podium, finishing third overall in the team standings.

Coonrod, a senior, ran away from the field to win the individual 2A SPSL girls' title, finishing the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:47.9.

Samuel immediately followed that with a highlight on defense, intercepting a pass at the Eatonville 41. But the Cruisers failed to convert the turnover into points, punting the ball away as the third quarter ended. Everything changed in the final 12 minutes.

Steilacoom struck first in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 31-26 on a Jason Freeland 12-yard touchdown catch. Then came the turning point, a back-breaking 85yard touchdown pass from Kaeka to Jaleo Johnson that gave the Sentinels their first

Bieker earned a fourthplace finish with a personalrecord time of 21:34.1, followed immediately by senior Bridget Stumph in fifth place at 21:45.6.

The team’s scoring was rounded out by a pair of underclassmen who both ran personal-best times.

Freshman Jenny Lowe placed ninth (22:26.3) and sophomore Audrey Mullins took 15th (23:19.5).

On the boys' side, the Cruisers were paced by senior Colton Rush, who cracked the top five with a fifth-place finish in 17:36.7.

Eatonville’s next drive sputtered with a turnover on downs, Steilacoom sealed the game with another scoring drive, this time a one-yard run that stretched the lead to 41-31 with just over three minutes remaining. The Cruisers had one final possession but turned the ball over on downs near midfield, allowing Steilacoom to run out the clock and celebrate a comeback win.

Eatonville forced three turnovers (two fumble recoveries and one interception) but only turned two into touchdowns.

Kolsrud was the team’s second finisher, placing 12th with a time of 18:33.7. Junior Titus Lowe was close behind, finishing 14th in 18:38.5.

Senior Corey Dempsey (21st, 18:58.7) and sophomore Blayne Cabana (53rd, 22:35.5) completed the scoring for the third-place boys' team.

Both Eatonville teams have qualified for the upcoming 2A Westside Classic District 3 Championships held at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place.

Meanwhile, Steilacoom capitalized on nearly every break late in the game. The loss drops Eatonville to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in league play, effectively ending its playoff hopes. The Cruisers will close out the regular season Thursday night on the road against their rivals, the Orting Cardinals, at 7 p.m. Eatonville Offensive Leaders: Cole Fowler — 19 of 22, 269 yards, 1 passing touchdown; 10 carries for 28 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.

Jacob Simons — 5 receptions for 76 yards. Connor McIlraith — 9 carries for 29 yards.

County Brings Broadband to Thun Field

It will boost business development and connectivity at one of the region’s key aviation hubs

Pierce County and Comcast have completed a joint project to bring highspeed fiber broadband and Internet services to Pierce County Airport-Thun Field, a move local leaders say will boost business development and connectivity at one of the region’s key aviation hubs.

The project, completed on Oct. 3, delivers a 100 percent fiberoptic network to the airport for the first time, providing highspeed Internet, mobile, entertainment, and security services through Xfinity and Comcast Business. Comcast representatives will work directly with airport tenants and businesses to connect them to the new network.

“Pierce County has been working to modernize the infrastructure of our airport to support businesses and tenants and prepare Pierce County AirportThun Field for the future,” said Pierce County Councilmember Dave Morell (District 1). “This essential service will enhance connectivity and support economic development at the airport.”

The more than $700,000 project was funded jointly by

Comcast and Pierce County, with the county contributing $125,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The county’s contribution came through the Council’s broadband expansion initiative, which aims to improve digital infrastructure and expand Internet access across rural and underserved areas.

County Councilmembers have made broadband investment a legislative priority in recent years, including funding in the 20242025 Biennial Budget to continue expansion efforts. The Thun Field project highlights the value of public-private partnerships, leveraging both county

Proposed State Rule Could Restrict an Additional 200,000 Acres of Private Forestland

The Washington Forest Practices Board is considering new rules on non-ish-bearing streams (Type Np) that could permanently restrict another 200,000 acres of private working forestland across western Washington.

Many landowners are unaware that these changes could limit harvest on their property, reduce local revenues, and threaten jobs in forest-dependent communities.

“This project reflects our longterm commitment to infrastructure improvements that make Pierce County a better place to live and do business,” Morell said.

“By strengthening our broadband capacity, we’re supporting not

only businesses, but also innovation and public safety.”

Located just five miles from downtown Puyallup, Pierce County Airport-Thun Field serves as a general aviation hub for local pilots, flight schools, and emergency response operations. The airport is home to Spencer Aircraft, SpanaFlight Aviation, Top Gun Bar & Grill, and the SIM Flight Center. County officials said the addition of fiber broadband will improve reliability for flight operations, training programs, and airportbased enterprises.

The expansion also aligns with the county’s broader effort to “Boost Broadband” throughout Pierce County – a program designed to close the digital divide and enhance connectivity in communities that have historically lacked access to high-speed Internet.

If You Smoked or Still Do This 60-Second Screening Could Save Your Life

Denise Lee smoked up to two packs a day for 40 years, but when she quit at 54, Denise made one more lifesaving decision.

After seeing an American Lung Association billboard that read “If you smoked, this lung cancer screening could save your life,” Denise scheduled a low-dose CT scan. The next day, her results came back: a mass was detected, which they later confirmed was lung cancer.

When she scheduled the scan, Denise had yet to develop a single symptom -- and catching her lung cancer that early meant she had multiple treatments available. It’s been eight years since, and Denise remains cancer-free.

Lung cancer screening is a simple, quick, painless and non-invasive procedure. A low-dose CT scan takes less than a minute and, as Denise knows, it could save your life. I’ve dedicated my life to advocating for healthy lungs, starting as a regional program director of the American Lung Association all the way to my current position as president and CEO. As such, I want anyone and everyone -- especially those who’ve smoked -- to know how easy and effective a screening is.

While we continue to make significant strides, lung cancer remains the top cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. -- yet about only one quarter of lung cancer cases are caught early, when five-year survival rates are over 60%.

Lung cancer often grows silently without any symptoms, which is precisely why early detection is so important and can lead to more effective treatment. But over 80% of high-risk current and former smokers haven’t been scanned.

Screenings are recommended for high-risk

individuals -- that includes current smokers, those who quit within the last 15 years, or ex-smokers between the ages of 50 and 80 who smoked a pack a day for 20 years (known as ‘20 pack years’) or the equivalent, such as two packs a day for 10 years.

With recent medical advances, lung cancer screenings can now be conducted using low-dose CT scans. Patients simply lie down on a table while an open imaging machine takes pictures to examine lung health. Less than a minute long, the screening is completely painless, and most private insurance plans cover the test, as does Medicare.

Of course, no one wants to hear that they may have lung cancer. But the head start afforded by a screening can make all the difference and open the door to more treatment options -- from surgery to chemotherapy to newer advances like targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Early detection has turned lung cancer from a terminal diagnosis into an eminently treatable condition.

In the past 10 years, these scans have saved 80,000 years of life -- that’s nearly thirty-million more days spent with loved ones and friends. If every highrisk individual had been screened for lung cancer between 2013 and 2020, that number could have been more than six times higher -half a million years of life saved. If you think you might be at risk, it’s now easier than ever to find out. Visit SavedByTheScan.org and take a brief quiz to find out whether you’re eligible for a low-dose CT scan. One in five people who took the quiz found out they were at high risk.

I joined the American Lung Association nearly five decades ago. I’m proud to have witnessed the enormous progress we’ve made against lung cancer. But there’s more work to do and that starts with more people getting scanned. If your lungs could talk, they’d tell you to talk to your doctor and ask about lung cancer screenings.
