Countdown to Parade Night and Town Fest

Eatonville is settling into the holiday season, and the town is getting ready for one of its most cheerful days of the year. On Saturday, December 6, families will gather for a full schedule of community activities, beginning in the morning and continuing long after the sun goes down. The day brings together food, lights, music and the familiar small town excitement that comes with seeing neighbors line the streets.

A FESTIVE START: SANTA BREAKFAST, 8 TO 11 A.M.

The celebration begins bright and early at the Ohop Grange with the annual Santa Breakfast. The morning event runs from 8 to 11 a.m. at 41608 Mountain Highway E and offers a warm start to the day. Families can enjoy breakfast, crafts for kids, live music and photos with Santa. The event supports the Eatonville High School band, and donations are accepted in cash. It is a cozy way for many families to launch into the holiday weekend.

HOLIDAY ACTIVITY DOWNTOWN: 4:30 P.M.

By late afternoon, downtown begins to glow with activity. At 4:30 p.m., the vendor and activity area near the Eatonville Visitor Center opens for browsing, shopping and Santa photos. The early evening window gives residents time to stroll, pick up hot treats, visit with friends and enjoy the holiday atmosphere before the parade begins. Many makers bring seasonal crafts, home baked goods and small gifts that feel unmistakably local.

CHRISTMAS PARADE: 6 P.M.

At 6 p.m., the Christmas Parade travels along Center Street and Mashell Avenue. The route turns the main corridor into a festive walkway filled with lights, decorated vehicles and familiar faces. School groups, sports teams, clubs, businesses and families traditionally take part, creating a lively mix

Mof music, costumes and homemade floats. The combination of early winter darkness and holiday lights gives the parade a warm glow that carries through the length of the route.

TOWN FEST INTO THE EVENING

After the final float passes, the crowd flows back toward the vendor area for Town Fest. Booths stay open into the night with crafts, snacks, warm drinks and baked goods. Activity tables for kids offer simple holiday projects such as cookie decorating or ornament making. Music and conversation fill the square while families take their time visiting each booth and enjoying the evening.

TIPS FOR THE DAY

Parking downtown fills quickly and many families like to arrive early to find a

good viewing spot. Local shops and eateries along Center Street often stay open later during event nights, which gives visitors a chance to warm up and support neighborhood businesses. Bringing extra layers, blankets and a travel mug with something warm can make the evening more comfortable.

A FULL DAY OF EATONVILLE TRADITION

December 6 brings together the spirit of the season in a single day. From a morning meal with Santa to a nighttime parade, the town creates a holiday setting that feels welcoming to both longtime residents and newcomers. The day celebrates the creativity, generosity and togetherness that define Eatonville at this time of year.

Get Set to Shine for the Annual Light Show

Eatonville is getting ready to shine again. With December now underway, neighbors are opening storage bins, testing lights, and deciding how they might participate this year. The community light show has become one of those traditions that feels as familiar as the mountain in the distance. It is friendly, cheerful, and open to everyone who wants to join in.

Homes, barns, porches, and yards across town will light up beginning December 12 and continue through December 28. Anyone who lives within the town limits can participate. Sign up is simple. You can register your address on the town website or in person at the administrative office. The deadline to sign up is December 8 so organizers have time to prepare the final participant list.

There is no cost to take part, and residents are welcome to decorate in any way they choose. The event is meant to be inclusive, encouraging people to participate at whatever level feels right for them. Every home adds to the sense of community and helps brighten the darker winter evenings. Judging is optional. If you want your home considered, check the judging box during registration. The town has not released this year’s judging schedule or the date winners will be announced, but participants will be contacted directly once those details are finalized. Even if you choose not to compete, your participation helps make the season feel a little warmer. The light show brings neighbors together, creates a shared sense of celebration, and reminds us how much a small town can glow when everyone adds their own bit of light.

If you have ever thought about decorating, this is the year to give it a try. Eatonville will be shining. You might as well join in.

MY CHRISTMAS ANGEL STORY

y Christmas story begins back in December of 2007. It has been a very hard year for all of us. We were both working very hard, but that year in October, I had a heart attack on the job. Two weeks later the kids had been sick and one in the hospital, and then to add to the hard times, my wife at that time had surgery and was out of work from it.

We had sold everything a little over a year earlier to start anew after the great recession had hit, and wiped us out financially. We had both taken higher paying jobs in Bothell Washington in hopes for better times and days. We had a modest apartment with the dreams of owning a home again.

In the first days of December our car decided it was going to die, and so did my little truck. We had decided that the only option that we had left was to go “home” to the Cheyenne River, regroup ourselves and start over.

We needed a car to get home, and at this time our credit was as bad as it could be. We had a few hundred dollars to figure things out with. First we needed a car that would make the 1200 mile trip in December.

Not far from our home was a small car lot called Volunteers of America Car lot. We had never noticed the lot before that day so we decided to stop in.

A nice old man, fairly round, with a beard, a warm handshake and a kind voice came out to greet us. He said how can I help you today? I said we need a car that will just get us home to South Dakota next week. It doesn't need to go any further, just get us home.

He said ahh, ok I got just the car for you over here. It was a 1993 Chevy Lumina, it was blue and priced at $2500.00. My head sank and he said how much do you have, young man? I said I have 600 cash and can come up with a bit more in a day or two.

The old man said go take a test drive, and let me see what I can do. So we did and the car ran like it was brand new.

Upon our return, the old man said I am going to sell this car to you today for 600 out the door if that works for you?

I was shocked. Dumbfounded really and said ok, we can do that.

He said my only request is that you call the office here when you get to South Dakota, so I know you made it. I said ok. So we finished the sale and paid the man.

A few short days later we were on the road to South Dakota and it was like we had an extra passenger with us the whole time. Just a feeling,a presence really that said just keep going you're doing fine. The weather the whole way out was great, and the whole way a snow storm was on our heels so to say, but it never reached us till we got home. That night it snowed really heavily.

The next day, I called the car sales lot and asked for Don. They said, I am sorry but there is no Don here, he passed away a few years ago. I described him, and the lady said

yes that sounds like Don. I said is your lot on Bothell Everett Highway still that's where we bought our car a few days ago. She said, oh no that lot closed a while ago after Don died. I hung up the phone and it then occurred to me, I had bought a great car from an angel. He then also traveled home with us to ensure we got back home safe.

Savvy Senior: How to Locate an Age-Friendly Doctor

Dear Savvy Senior,

My husband and I are relocating to a nearby state to be closer to our daughter and will need to find a new primary care physician when we arrive. We are both in our late 70s and are interested in getting a geriatrician to oversee our health care going forward. Any suggestions for finding someone?

—Searching for Care

Dear Searching,

Cp.m.

hoosing a geriatrician as your primary care doctor in your 70s is a good idea, especially if you’re dealing with various age-related health problems. But if you’re in relatively good health you may not need a geriatrician. A good primary care doctor with an agefriendly philosophy may be all you need. Here’s what you should know.

WHO NEEDS A GERIATRICIAN?

Geriatricians are primary care doctors that have additional specialized training in treating older patients. Those who can benefit the most from seeing a geriatrician are seniors age 75 and older with multiple health and agerelated problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, incontinence, osteoporosis, cognitive decline, frailty, depression, or trouble with balance and falls.

“ Geriatricians can also help their patients and families determine their long-term care needs, like how long they can remain in their own homes safely without assistance, and what type of services may be necessary when they do need some extra help.”

Geriatricians can also help their patients and families determine their long-term care needs, like how long they can remain in their own homes safely without assistance, and what type of services may be necessary when they do need some extra help.

Unfortunately, there’s a shortage of geriatricians in the U.S., so depending on where you are moving, finding one may be difficult.

To help you locate one in your new area, use Medicare’s online find and compare search tool. Just go to Medicare.gov/care-compare and click on “Doctors & Clinicians” and type in your location, then type in “geriatric medicine” in the Name & Keyword box. You can also get this information by calling Medicare at 800-633-4227. The American Geriatrics Society also has a geriatrician-finder tool on their website at HealthinAging.org.

If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, contact your plan for a list of network geriatricians in your new area.

Keep in mind, though, that locating a geriatrician doesn’t guarantee you will be accepted as a patient. Many doctors already have a full patient roster and don’t accept any new patients. You’ll need to call the individual doctor’s office to find out.

AGE-FRIENDLY PCPS

If you and your husband are in relatively good health or if you can’t find a geriatrician in your new area, a good primary care physician (PCP) that practices age-friendly care would also be a viable choice.

To search for new PCPs, use the previously listed Medicare tools. Once you locate a few, call their office and ask if they’re accepting new patients and if they practice the 4Ms of age friendly care, which include: What Matters (your goals and priorities); Medication safety and appropriateness; Mentation (cognition and mood); and Mobility (ways to keep you moving).

You can also research new doctors at sites like Healthgrades.com and Vitals. com.

If you’re finding it hard to get into a new practice, you might even consider looking for a geriatric nurse practitioner or advanced practice registered nurse to serve as your PCP.

Geriatricians are also particularly adept at tackling medication problems. Because many seniors take multiple medications at the same time for various health conditions, and because aging bodies often absorb and metabolize drugs differently than younger adults, unique side effects and drug interactions are not uncommon. A geriatrician will evaluate and monitor your medications to be sure they are not affecting you in a harmful way.

Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior. org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

Cold Weather Readiness for Older Adults and Their Communities

Winter brings cold nights, freezing rain, and sudden mountain weather that can create real challenges for older adults. Preparation is not just helpful, it is essential. A little planning now can prevent injuries, reduce stress, and make winter safer for everyone.

Below is an actionable list of steps that seniors, caregivers, and neighbors can take to prepare for winter weather in our community.

PREPARE FOR COLD NIGHTS

Indoor temperatures can drop quickly during winter storms. Older adults lose body heat faster, which increases the risk of hypothermia. Check that indoor heat is working properly. Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Inspect space heaters and heated blankets for safe wiring and use only devices with automatic shutoff features. Place heaters on level surfaces away from bedding or curtains.

Store extra layers, blankets, flashlights, and batteries in easy-to-access locations. Never use ovens or stovetops for heat because this can create a fire hazard or carbon monoxide risk.

MAKE WALKWAYS AND ENTRYWAYS SAFE

Sidewalks, shaded driveways, and rural roads often stay icy long after sunrise. Ask neighbors or family members to help clear leaves, branches, and moss well before the first freeze. Apply pet safe ice melt in known trouble spots. Secure outdoor rugs and replace worn doormats. Check that indoor thresholds are not slippery, especially where wet shoes may create slick surfaces. Add handrails where possible. Good winter footwear makes a difference. Shoes with reliable traction and cane tips designed for ice can greatly reduce fall risks.

PLAN FOR POWER OUTAGES

Storms rolling off Mount Rainier can cause outages with little warning. Know where your flashlights are stored. Charge phones, mobility devices, and medical equipment before storms hit. Keep a thermos for warm drinks if the heat goes out. Close curtains after dark to help retain indoor warmth.

Battery powered motion lights along hallways and stairs can help prevent falls during outages.

ORGANIZE MEDICATIONS AND HEALTH NEEDS EARLY

Road conditions can change quickly during winter weather, and travel to clinics or to pharmacies may become difficult. Refill prescriptions early and keep an updated medication list in an easy to see place. Caregivers can help arrange transportation for medical visits or check in on chronic health needs. Whenever possible, talk with your pharmacy about converting routine prescriptions to a 90 day supply if your insurance allows it. Mail order refills can also be a reliable option for those with mobility challenges. If neither is available, ask whether your Medicare plan or pharmacy can authorize an early refill before a forecasted storm. Policies vary, so it is helpful to ask in advance.

BUILD AN EMERGENCY KIT

A basic kit should include water, shelf stable food, essential medications, a flashlight, radio, warm blanket, and extra batteries. Add a manual can opener and copies of important documents.

If you rely on powered medical equipment, create a backup plan such as spare batteries or a charged power bank. Pierce County posts warming shelter information during severe weather, and local fire districts will sometimes share updates on temporary resources through social media or town alerts.

PLAN TRANSPORTATION BEFORE STORMS ARRIVE

Freezing rain and slush can make hills, driveways, and back roads especially slick. Plan essential errands before a storm arrives. If you use a mobility aid, check that wheels, grips, and cane tips are in good condition. Choose routes that have been plowed or cleared by neighbors or town crews.

Schedule transportation for medical appointments early since ride availability may be limited once conditions worsen. Identify a neighbor or family member who can serve as your winter weather contact to help with errands or check in if you decide to stay home until the roads improve.

STAY CONNECTED WITH YOUR COMMUNITY

Community support is one of Eatonville’s strengths. Neighbors can check on older adults before and after storms. A simple visit or phone call can confirm that someone has heat, lights, food, and needed medications. Offering to help with clearing ice, carrying groceries, or checking porches and steps can prevent falls.

WHERE TO GET HELP WITH WINTER PREP

Not everyone can clear ice, lift heavy items or arrange transportation during winter weather. There are several reliable local resources.

PIERCE COUNTY AGING AND DISABILITY

RESOURCES

Provides information on senior services, caregiver support, transportation options, and winter safety resources. Call 253 798 4600.

PIERCE COUNTY 211

Offers referral information for food access, transportation, emergency shelter listings, and senior assistance. Call 211 from any phone.

TOWN OF EATONVILLE

Shares local alerts during storms, including closures, road conditions, and safety updates. Visit the town website or follow official town notifications.

EATONVILLE FAMILY AGENCY

Provides community support services, food assistance, and connections for seniors who may need help. Call 360 832 6805.

LOCAL FIRE DISTRICTS AND AID AGENCIES

Fire District 23 and nearby districts often post storm updates, safety reminders, and temporary resource information on their official pages.

LOCAL FAITH AND COMMUNITY GROUPS

Many churches and volunteer groups help with wellness checks, transportation coordination, or light outdoor tasks during winter weather.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS

Often the fastest and most dependable support. Exchanging phone numbers, offering rides, checking stairs for ice, or dropping off groceries can make winter safer for everyone. With early planning and a strong community network, Eatonville’s older adults can stay safe, warm, and confident throughout the winter. Let us look out for one another and make this season a comfortable one for the entire community.

December News from Eatonville School District Superintendent Jay Brower

Dear Families, Staff and Community Members,

Happy December. As we transition into this festive season, I hope the Thanksgiving break offered meaningful time with family and friends. There is so much to appreciate across the Eatonville School District, and this month brings even more to look forward to.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Across our district, each of our 280+ staff members regardless of role or assignment is working tirelessly to support student learning and provide an exceptional educational experience. Staff are deeply engaged in ongoing professional learning, including training on how to ensure that every student feels valued and supported in every classroom and environment.

Through continued training and implementation of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), we are better able to meet students’ unique needs with the right level of support. This work is strengthening our culture of collaboration and continual improvement. December is an essential month for learning. Please help set your child up for success by ensuring they attend school each day.

ENGAGED AND EFFECTIVE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS: A BOARD OF DISTINCTION!

Many of you know that our school board remains steadfastly focused on the academic success of every Eatonville student. What you may not know is that their leadership has earned statewide recognition.

We are proud to announce that the Eatonville School Board is one of only

10 small districts in Washington to receive the 2025 WSSDA Board of Distinction Award!

This honor reflects the Board’s commitment to strong governance, student achievement, and meaningful community partnership. Thank you to our board members, staff, families, and community for helping make Eatonville a place where students thrive!

VETERANS DAY RECOGNITION PROGRAMS

In November, each of our five schools hosted heartfelt Veterans Day programs to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes. Students shared songs, speeches, and presentations to show their gratitude.

Thank you to our staff, students, families, and—most importantly—our veterans for making these events so meaningful to our school community.

STADIUM, TRACK, AND FIELD

I could not be more proud of our Eatonville community. Our Stadium, Track, and Field project is an inspiring example of how this community comes together to address long-overdue needs that impact both students and residents.

In 2024, voters approved a six-year capital projects levy that included $3.5 million toward replacing our aging, unsafe track and field. For years, our natural-turf field could only be used a handful of times in the fall before becoming muddy and unsafe. It also failed to meet WIAA requirements for hosting invitationals or postseason play. Because of these limitations, PE classes, athletics, and community groups seldom had access during rainy seasons. Additionally, during dry months, maintaining the field required water

usage equivalent to that of 27 households. Thanks to voter support and successful acquisition of state grant funding—this is all changing. The field is nearly ready for turf installation, which has now been delivered!

STADIUM

As shared previously, we did not ask taxpayers to fund the replacement of our nearly 90-year-old stadium through the capital levy. Instead, we chose to aggressively pursue state grants and seek support from state elected officials to keep the tax burden lower for our community.

These efforts were very successful. We extend our sincere appreciation to State Representatives Matt Marshall and Andrew Barkis, and to Senator Jim McCune, for their advocacy and support. We are also grateful for the support from the Washington Recreation and Conservation Office.

Many local businesses and organizations have also stepped up. The Greater Eatonville Community Foundation (GECF) is gathering donations for engraved seat plaques in our 1,224-seat stadium. The EHS Class of 2025 generously funded a new flagpole. GECF also partnered with Arrow Lumber to provide stadium naming rights and signage. Ohop Mutual Light Company, LeMay-Pierce County Refuse, and Land Recovery, Inc. (LRI) all contributed significant services to move the project forward and to make our stadium project a possibility.

This collective effort has made possible what once seemed impossible— replacing our stadium, restrooms and field lights without relying on local taxpayer funding. Many more individuals, organizations, and businesses likewise contributed and will be recognized at our ribbon-cutting ceremony this spring.

Because our community came together, generations of Eatonville students and families will benefit from a safe, year-round stadium, track, and field. Thank you for your tremendous support. We are Eatonville Strong, supporting our students, families, community, and one another.

IN GRATITUDE

I am deeply grateful to serve the Eatonville School District and this remarkable community. Your consistent support for our students and staff is truly inspiring. The dedication of our employees and the progress of our students reflect the strength of our shared commitment.

Thank you for all you do to make Eatonville Schools a place where students learn, grow, and succeed.

Tinsel, Ribbons and Lights: Seasonal Risks for Curious Pets

The winter season brings bright decorations, wrapped gifts and sparkling displays throughout the home. While these traditions create a warm and festive atmosphere for people, they can also introduce unexpected hazards for pets. According to the Humane Society of the United States, many common seasonal items that seem harmless to humans can become dangerous for animals who explore with their mouths and paws.

Tinsel is one of the most frequently cited risks. Cats are especially drawn to the movement and shine of tinsel strands. The Humane Society warns that any long, thin material can cause life threatening intestinal blockages if swallowed. Even a small piece can twist inside the digestive tract and require emergency surgery. Pet experts recommend swapping tinsel for safer options like wide paper garlands or cloth ribbons.

Gift wrapping supplies can be just as tempting. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that curling ribbons, twine and yarn can lead to choking or internal obstruction if ingested. It helps to keep all wrapping items in a closed container and to clean up scraps immediately after presents are opened.

Seasonal plants are another area of concern. The ASPCA maintains an extensive list of toxic plants, and several familiar winter decorations appear there. Poinsettias, while not usually deadly,

can still cause stomach upset and mouth irritation if pets chew the leaves. Holly and mistletoe can cause more serious reactions, especially in dogs and cats. Lilies are extremely dangerous to cats even in tiny amounts. Pet owners who want greenery in the home can choose safe alternatives such as ferns, spider plants or artificial arrangements.

Lights and cords can also be hazardous. Puppies, kittens and newly adopted pets may chew on cords, which can result in electrical burns. The AVMA suggests taping cords along walls, using protective covers or choosing battery powered decorations to reduce risk.

The increased activity of the winter season can also stress animals who prefer routine. The Humane Society recommends providing a quiet room or a familiar retreat during gatherings and offering plenty of exercise and enrichment to help pets stay calm.

SAFE DECORATING IDEAS

Pet friendly households can still enjoy a bright and cheerful home. Safer decoration options include paper snowflakes, felt ornaments, artificial wreaths, battery operated candles and sturdy fabric garlands. These choices bring warmth and color to a space without introducing the hazards associated with tinsel, toxic plants or exposed cords.

With thoughtful planning, homes can remain festive while keeping pets healthy and secure throughout the season.
